Robin waltzes into the Munson trailer like she owns it. “Alright, Munson,” she tells Eddie, “why’s my soulmate sad?”

He blinks up at her from where he’s been working on a character sheet. “Uh. I don’t know? He’s your soulmate.”

“He’s your boyfriend, and he’s sad because of something his boyfriend did, so what did you do?”

Eddie’s eyes widen. “He’s sad? I don’t know! Shit, what did I do?”

She groans and flops sideways on his bed. “Hopeless. Absolutely hopeless.”

“I’m trying!” He rakes a hand through his hair. “I don’t know! Robin, you’ve gotta help me figure this out!”

She sighs. “Okay, what did you two do? What did you talk about last time you were together?”

“Uh,” Eddie says, “he stayed the night last night?” Robin shrieks and jumps off the bed. Eddie rolls his eyes. “Not like that, we literally just slept. He had the beginning of a migraine, so I got him ice packs and laid with him.” He sighs. “We didn’t talk much last night because of that. This morning we had breakfast, talked to Wayne for a minute… he and Wayne talked about baseball, mostly. Uh… he asked if I had any plans for tomorrow.”

“And what did you say?”

“Not besides school,” he shrugs.

Robin rolls her eyes. “I swear to fuck-” she grabs his pillow, whips it at him. “That’s why he’s upset, you idiot!”

He tries and fails to block the pillow. “Why? Cause I don’t have plans?”

“Edward. Look me in the eyes and tell me what day today is.”

Eddie thinks about it. “Uh. February… eleventh?”

Robin hangs her head. “Add two.”

“Thirteenth?”

“Uh-huh. Which makes tomorrow?”

“February fourteenth.” They sit in silence for a minute until it dawns on Eddie. “Oh, shit!” He scrambles up, sticks some shoes on, grabs his wallet. “C’mon, I’ve got some shopping to do!”

“Exactly,” Robin says. “You do.” She grins crookedly at him. “Yellow roses.”

He points at her. “Got it!”

The next day, he shows up at Steve’s house with chocolates and yellow roses. “Hey,” he says softly. “Hopefully I’m not too late. Will you be my valentine?”

Steve smells the roses. Smiles. “Of course I will.”

Forgotten Memory in a Letter

Lydia was going through the letters in her husbands box that he kept under their bed. The kids were playing outside with the dogs in the fields. There were letters from Axel’s mother, cousins, and from myself that I wrote when I went away to sell our crop and livestock. 

After quite a while, one letter came about to be from the years that we had left far behind us. 

“My Dear Axel,

How’s our inside man? It is nearly time for us to strike Drapple Cove’s Harbor. There’ll be a bloody mess of it, so I hope you’re well prepared. With this letter, as you can see, is a parcel. You have a d§$# good eye, I may observe, so I’m gifting you with one f$£# of a riffle and three magazines. Have a h¥&$ of a time my friend!

Lydia looked at the letter with disgust and horror. She remembered that night vividly, though she hated it deeply. It had been years since either she or Axel had willingly discussed their time as part of Cadell’s crew. 

As Cadell had predicted, that night was bloody. Women and men and children were running and fighting and bleeding. Dying. Not just dying, being killed. At their hands, Lydia’s hands. She wanted to erase it, but she couldn’t. 

She used to have nightmares for nights on end after the plunder. She had come to terms that this was a part of her at some point, and then didn’t think about for a while, until it was forgotten. But she supposed nothing was truly forgotten forever. She knew those nightmares of the woman who looked like her dearest friend who had been shot by their Captain, and the little boy who looked like one of her children today, would come back now. She hated it she hated it she hated it she hated it she hated it all. 

She joined in the life of piracy for riches and adventure. Sure, she was rich then, but Lydia wished nothing but meeting Axel had come of it. 

As Lydia put the letters back in the box how she found them, she wished there was a spell that could wipe all of her horrible memories from her mind.

major major spoilers for The Song of Your Heart, a scifi tmnt fic by yours truly. here’s a snippet from the chapter in question below the cut:

“Long shadows crept along the walls towards them, and rounding the sharp bend lumbered two nightmarish organisms. The three turtles had never before seen anything like them; they were so large they just barely fit in the corridor on all fours, which was how they walked. All four limbs on which they crawled ended in bizarre hand-like appendages, neither claws nor feet. Both creatures had unnaturally long bodies, from their front and hind arms to their torsos to their necks.

The lights in the hallway were bright enough that Mikey could make out a gross blotching of colors that made up their scales, appearing in bright blue and pale green. The slightly hunched backs of the monsters each looked to be made up of shell-like plates and protruding bone.

As they drew nearer, Leo, Raph, and Mikey stayed frozen, none of them daring to so much as breathe too loudly; so far, it didn’t seem like the creatures had noticed them.

And then a surge of emotion burst from Nollpak Ozinfa’s mind, engulfing the three brothers in a miasma of despair. Suddenly, they understood. Through Nollpak’s quick observation, skills in puzzling out situations at a rapid speed, and ability to share their findings telepathically as a result, all three of them understood.

“No…” whispered Leonardo under his breath.

Raphael’s face was a mask of shock. The twin sai shook in his hands.

A long time ago, Mikey had amused himself in the main medical bay by doodling pictures of everyone on one of the iPad-like touchscreen tablets. He’d drawn his brothers and a few of the medical technicians before scribbling out an amusing sketch of Donnie and Ray kissing like a dime-store-novel book illustration. At the time, Mikey had considered giving Ray a mouth, as he’d been unsure how they’d kiss otherwise, but quickly discovered that Ray with a mouth was horribly, uncannily creepy. So he’d erased it with haste.

Staring at the figures looming ahead of them, Mikey now realized that he’d been right.

Ray did look creepier with a mouth.”
