Thoughts
Thoughts in your head are like leaves on a river, flowing throughout your mind;making you think good and bad, even thoughts that can be sad. You can’t do anything about it,just let them be.Let your thoughts roam freethey will eat you up if you let them, they will slice through your mind, they will cut you up,they could destroy you– don’t let them. Remember thoughts are just that.Thoughts.What goes…

You don’t have to be a one person crusader & you don’t always have to comprehend but what you should be is kind, thoughtful, considerate, be compassionate & think. ⠀ ⠀ When it comes to homelessness you can’t help everyone it really is impossible but you can help one person. Living in Whitby & working in Robin Hood’s Bay we are not faced with the plight, misery & desperation of homelessness. Being here in Edinburgh it is all too real that not everyone has the luxury of a roof over their heads, a warm meal or drink, a comfy bed or someone to talk to. It breaks our hearts to walk past so many people that in this day and age it is daily life for, but what we did do was give a small amount of change, we helped one person just a little. You can too. ⠀ ⠀ Two topics that quite possibly go hand in hand together Homelessness & Mental Health. It is so easy for us to go about our daily life and not notice sometimes what is staring us right in the face but it is all so easy for someone to suffer in silence & mask what is going on underneath. ⠀ ⠀ Lend an ear & listen it’s free but it could make the world of difference to someone’s day both those suffering with Mental Health, those that are Homeless or both! ⠀ ⠀ #ItsOkayNotToBeOkay #Listen #WorldMentalHealthDay #WorldHomelessDay #everylittlehelps #everymindmatters https://www.instagram.com/p/BowzN0VFM22/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=17l0q3d21v9v3

Whilst lying in bed
I deep thought Whilst lying in bedwith crazy thoughts running through my head. The dark clings to me like leaves on a tree. It’s so dark I cannot see.My mind is working overtime,my imagination is committing a crime.Oh my wordthis is a dark rhyme. So let it be,what has to be.My decision will set me free.I will decide if it’s bad or good.I’ll decideif I shouldn’t or should.I’ll go the side that fills…

Mental health, its ok NOT to be ok
Mental health. It affects 1 in 4 of us each year and until recently, has remained a taboo subject, especially in the world of sport. With the help of prominent athletes, conversations surrounding mental health have become more accepted and common in sport, because if it affects us all, shouldn’t we be talking about it?
Elite athletes are often viewed as ‘super human’, resilient and robust, therefore shouldn’t they be less vulnerable to mental health? Well the simple answer is no, they’re human too. Mental health affects us all, in some way, ranging from anxiety and stress, through to depression and suicidal thoughts. In an interview with TODAY, 28 time Olympic medallist Michael Phelps, who suffered from depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts, highlights the important of opening up and seeking help.
youtube
At the start of the interview, Phelps states “I was always taught that you weren’t allowed to…show a weakness…ever…because of being an athlete you’re supposed to be strong and be able to push through anything”. Which is a belief and judgement that needs to change and modernise.
Elite athletes are subject daily to intense pressure to increase and improve their physical fitness, from intense training and tracking calories, to feeling obliged to perform and be successful. But the focus is on physical fitness, with relatively little focus on mental fitness.
Male athletes have been taught to “deny weakness...and fit the script of the mentally tough athlete”. These highly successful athletes are often viewed as ‘super human’, robust and strong, and therefore shouldn’t they be less vulnerable to mental health? Well the simple answer is no, they’re human too, mental health affects us all.
A review exploring the issues affecting male mental health in sport identified that increasing education and awareness surrounding mental health may encourage more males to converse about their own struggles and to seek help.
youtube
In a documentary with Prince William, successful footballers; including Thierry Henry, Jermaine Jenas and Peter Crouch, discuss their experiences with mental health. Throughout the documentary, the importance of acknowledging and talking about mental health is reinforced. Prince Williams states “we are all touched by mental health”, and I believe this is really important to acknowledge. Mental health, regardless of our background, age, sex or race etc, does affect us all. When speaking about the struggles Danny Rose faced with his mental health, Jenas mentioned “as a team we ignored (his struggles), and as a club maybe we ignored and neglected at that point…we have to notice things that are happening around us as well”. It is important that we educate ourselves and others about mental health so we can recognise when we, or people around us, may be struggling.
With the help of prominent figures, mental health in sport is becoming part of more conversations. Increasing awareness and changing old-fashioned opinions of mental health in sport is extremely important for the future of sport and athletes well-being.
Speaking about mental health is not a weakness, it is a strength to have the confidence to talk about these things.
It is ok NOT to be ok.
I’d love to hear your ideas about how to also tackle the stigma of mental health in sport, please leave a comment below.
