So I just finished the first episode ST Enterprise and it was... interesting. I'm trying (and failing) not to be too harsh. So far the only likable character is T'Pol (and Porthos obviously). I'm hoping that will change. Also I don't understand the title song... just why? What were they thinking?(Hopping it's an one time thing)

My fanfic has activated "car guy" enthusiasm. What kind of transportation does San Fran have in the 2150s-2160s? For sure those cable cars. Buses and subways. The Buses are electric or solar powered. There's cars, but they're all electric or perhaps hydrogen powered? What do they look like? What brands are still around? CAR STYLING. What sells more, sedans or SUVs? I bet none of them are manual transmission, since current EVs are unable to be manual. What safety features are in place? I didn't even think about self driving.

The way I really want to talk about some "Political" star trek things like how bc Enterprise was filmed after 9/11 the nationalistic attitude crept in and we got terrorist space laser that blows up Florida, followed by an entire season what is clearly meant to be an allegory for the war on terror, followed by a season that heavily implies Surak to be the equivalent of Jesus with Archer as his "prophet" (not even really implied, Archer literally says in an episode that how the Vulcans talk about Surak's Teachings reminds him very deeply of a similar Figure of Earth (Jesus))
But also I don't want to risk the post escaping containment

even just casually looking up Roxann Dawson directing Star Trek episodes in the late 90s/early 00s brings up interesting pictures
Tumblr media Tumblr media
directing Ethan Phillips and Tim Russ for the Star Trek: Voyager season 6 episodes “Riddles”, her first Trek credit as a director. The episode aired on November 1999. (Images taken from this tumblr post, which I believe are sourced from the Voyager DVD extras)
Tumblr media
directing Star Trek Enterprise “The Andorian Incident” (with I think Jeffrey Combs), the first of ten directorial credits on the show, August 2001 (image taken from Memory Alpha)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
directing Star Trek: Enterprise “Vox Sola”, likely in January 2002 (first image taken from Memory Alpha, the second one is a screenshot I took of this video that I believe was part the Enterprise DVD extras)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
directing Connor Trinneer and Scott Bakula for Star Trek: Enterprise “Dawn”, which aired in January 2003 (first image taken from Memory Alpha and the second one from this tumblr post)
Tumblr media
directing Star Trek: Enterprise “Exile”, which aired in October 2003 (Image taken from this tumblr post)
Tumblr media
directing Star Trek: Enterprise “Chosen Realm”, together with Director of Photography Marvin Rush, October 2003 (Image taken from Memory Alpha)

Star Trek: Flip-up Communicator history
Tumblr media
Star Trek pilot "The Cage" (1964)
The very first version. It's like those see-through game controllers from the 1990's!
Tumblr media
Star Trek: TOS (1966-69) The iconic model. Possibly inspired the concept of mobile phones. The case is made from a chopped up Sterling Plastics pencil case.
Tumblr media
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
A bulky militaristic look. Modified from a real life army radio
Tumblr media
Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (1983)
A return to a more classic shape. I think the inner part is from some ATM machine plastic model, but I might be confusing my Trek prop trivia.
Tumblr media
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)
The Search For Spock version with added buttons which remind me of ancient TV remotes.
Tumblr media
Star Trek: Enterprise (2001-2005)
Trek's first prequel, set over 100 years before the time of Captain Kirk brought back flip-up communicators after many years of tapping badges in the 24th century.
Tumblr media
Star Trek (2009) U.S.S. Kelvin
At the birth of his son and when the Prime and Kelvin timelines split, George Kirk's communicator is a simplified, button-free version of the classic TOS one.
Tumblr media
Star Trek (2009) U.S.S. Enterprise
Designed with input from Nokia, the Kelvin Universe version of the classic Trek communicator. 2013's Into Darkness confirms it receives text messages, too - but I'd hate to try typing out a message with that weird button😂
Tumblr media
Star Trek: Discovery (2017-)
Another modernisation of the classic TV series one, this time with an animated screen on place of the moire pattern from TOS. Inside that case is an iPhone for the graphics. For the first time in Trek, it's made explicit that the communicators are also universal translators enabling everyone in a room to understand everyone else (even though nobody's lips should sync up and you should hear overlapping voices which only ever happened in Star Trek Beyond)
Tumblr media
Strange New Worlds (2022-)
And back to the TOS series version, with some very minor changes. Strange New Worlds is also the first time it's called a phone in dialogue

I propose we call it the "Shrek effect", for that thing where you have an idea for a story, only to realize it already exists and was massively popular.
Named after that post where someone goes "there should be a reverse Beauty & the Beast story, where Beauty turns into a beast at the end!" and then realizes that's just Shrek, the 2001 film that made half a billion dollars in theaters.
I was thinking about this because I thought it'd be cool to have a story about far future time travelers come back in time, except instead of coming to the current day or the past, they come to a time that's still in the future (of the current day), but is the past to them.
And then I realized that that definitely exists, because it's called Star Trek: First Contact, it came out in 1996 and I saw in in theaters. In it, the 24th century crew of the Enterprise come back in time to 2063.
