Mascix: Describing a Non-Male individual that finds a masculine gender attribution befitting and considers it an essential facet of their gender identity.

Based upon the term Apathmascix.

Etymology

Mascix is derived from Apathmascix, created by removing the prefix Apath-, indicating apathy. The root, Mascix, has a unknown etymological origin. Apathmascix was coined by user Cybertroniancoining in December 2023. The term Mascix, coined by Gent of Gender-Jargon a few days after, is directly based upon user Cybertroniancoining's term as a related concept.

Elaboration

Mascix is a complex and potentially contradictory identity in which one's gender is not Male, but has masculine traits attributed to them nonetheless, and this attribution is not only considered to be fitting by the individual, but an integral part of their overall gender experience.

More simply, an Mascix individual:

Has a gender identity that they consider to be Non-Male.

Has traits of masculinity attributed to them by other individuals.

Considers having traits of masculinity attributed to their person to be agreeable and in a few, multiple or all manners at least part of the time.

Considers this attribution to be an intrinsic part of their experience of their gender as a whole.

Mascix differs from Apathmascix in that a Mascix individual is definitively not apathetic towards masculine traits being attributed to them, nor are they inherently beyond gender as a concept. In place of indifference, a Mascix individual enjoys, appreciates, entertains, welcomes or otherwise freely accepts masculine traits being attributed to their person. Furthermore, this attribution is a fundamental aspect of their gender experience.

Flag

The Mascix flag is based upon the Apathmascix flag created by the coiner of the term. The Apathmascix flag utilizes the color palette from the Inersgender flag created by user Stellette in 2014 alongside a tri-color blue scheme. The Mascix flag is color-picked from the tri-color blue scheme, shown across three vertical bars, with the darkest blue at the left progressing to the lightest blue to the right. In the middle, a horizontal, tan stripe was added to represent the quality of being a Mascix being a Non-Male. The Mascix flag was created by Gent of Gender-Jargon in 2023.

Note: Gender attribution is not necessarily based upon one's expression, but is more frequently an assumption made about an individual's gender identity without their input. Being an assumption, it is not always correct, good, wanted or warranted. Affirming attributions are congruent with one's perception of themselves. Incorrect and undesired attributions are incongruent with this perception and are often distressing. Mascix should not be used to describe anyone who does not like masculinity being attributed to them, as it would be misdenoting on multiple levels.

Hello, so excited to see you active and working on this IF again! I hope this means you are doing better on a personal level too because I remember you telling us you were not feeling up to writing and working on this as you were in a bad mental and emotional state. So I hope things have improved on that front too! 😊

I love the new and updated story and demo. I was just curious whether there are any changes to the characters or story. For example, I remember male Shea was trans and female Elixis was trans. Is this still true? What about the rest of the ROs? Are they still included? I remember you said you had to cut some of them off the story as they were way too many to write and account for. Same with our backstories, I remember you said you were considering altering/cutting some of the possible entities we can choose to be bound with. Sorry for all these questions, tumblr search is just notoriously bad so I can't find any answers to my questions.

Hello! I've been doing a lot better these past few months, thank you. I reached out and got help when things got really bad, and it's helped immensely. :) Though there are always days that are harder than others, of course, but I've been doing pretty well overall, I would say! Hope you're doing good, also. 💜

The majority of the main plot has remained the same 'behind the scenes', so to speak. I was thinking of cutting out a few of the helspawn entities when I first started the rewrite but ultimately chose against it--it just didn't feel right to change those! I did end up having to cut a few of the main companions, however, as it just was too much work for me at the time. I'm hoping to add a few of them as minor characters in the future, and for the others, I've incorporated some elements of their backstories and personalities into the remaining four (Elexis has some traits from Eiri and Sinclair now, for example, and Shea some of Sutton).

Regarding gender identities, female Elexis is trans, and nonbinary Elexis is always feminine leaning. Male Shea is not trans, however, though Penrose is a trans man. Shea looks and acts fairly masculine in all their forms, but they're pretty agender and not too fussed about it. Idris is... Idris. :)

Is there a term for being man and nonman?

"nonman" can mean literally anything that isn't "man" so for the sake of simplicity I'm going 2 mainly include umbrella terms and static terms (so no fluid/flux or genderfluid fragment sys) because otherwise this would be 2 long.

EDIT: I also want to state that "nonman" is a racist term (as well as exorsexist) and I'm not comfortable coining something with that (or "nonwoman" as definitions). I didn't know this at the time but I do now.

Gravitation

For many, this anime, manga series, and OAV collection was the gateway into shounen-ai and yaoi. Shuichi Shindo is a rising vocalist of a rock band who becomes involved with Eiri Yuki, a romance novelist. 

 Gravitation is bright, colorful, hilarious. However, the series has dark undertones of sexual assault, violence, and homophobia and how those experiences shape many of the characters.

Yuri on ice

Yuri Katsuki is a professional ice skater with little self-esteem and a bad season behind him. Viktor Nikiforov is a Russian skating God whom Yuri idolizes. Yuri runs off to his parents hot spring to wallow in pork cutlet bowls. Viktor shows up naked in said hot spring offering to be Yuri’s coach. And the rest was born to make history.

Sumika Murasame has had a crush on her best friend, Ushio Kazama since middle school. She’s never confessed to her.

The series, which is based off a manga, does a great job of telling the pains of a one-sided love story while also interjecting humor and the overall troubles of going through high school as a lesbian in Japan.

Shuichi Nitori is a transgender girl. Yoshino Takatsuki is a transgender boy. And they’re both going through puberty. The series, which is based on a manga of the same name, follows their lives, friendships, and romantic relationships from junior high school through high school graduation. It’s a realistic, but also uplifting story about how surrounding yourself with people who accept you can help through the tumultuous years as a teenager who also happens to be transgender.

The series deals with such as being transgender, gender dysphoria, relationships, puberty, and the emotional toll that has on its young protagonists.

Revolutionary Girl Utena

While not officially billed as a shoujo-ai, there’s little debate that Revolutionary Girl Utena is, in its heart, a love story. If Gravitation introduced many people to boy’s love, it was this show that introduced them to girl’s love. It’s the story of Utena Tenjou, a teenage tomboy who was so impressed by a kind prince in her youth that she decides to become one herself, and Anthy Himemiya, the Rose Bride.

Utena finds out Anthy is in an abusive relationship and protects her, entering a series of duels at Ohtori Academy. Anthy is the “Rose Bride,” and is awarded as a prize to the winner of each duel. Whoever wins the tournament of the Rose Bride will receive what a so-called power to revolutionize the known world. The series features allegory, magic, and psychological warfare, along with some dark aspects, especially in regards to Anthy. Her status as a "prize" subjects her to a lot of abuse, though she's eventually rescued.

Notable Traits: She has a firey mop of naturally red, curly hair, and full-body freckles.  

Experiment R9XH7 (Birth Name Unknown)

Stage name: Riggor Mortis; the Executioner

Nicknames: Riggor, Ri, Riri, Big Boy

Nationality: Zaunite

Gender: Male

Orientation: Probably heterosexual

Height: Somewhere around 12 feet tall

Build: Huge and muscular.

Abilities: HE BIG. BEEG BOYO.  V STRONG thanks to genetic modification and possible arguments.

Notable Traits: He’s covered in a variety of scars across most of his body, including some severe damage to his face that left him permanently disfigured.  He conceals this with masks and helms at any given time; it’s very rare to see his face.  Some people(mostly Jack) also believe him to be mute as he doesn’t speak often. 

Eiriol Altomari

Stage Name: Batboy

Nationality: Zaunite

Age: 9

Gender: Male

Height: Smol

Build: Smol

Abilities: He can mimic the echolocation of bats with tongue clicks and noises.  He’s very hypersensitive in all his senses other than sight.  

Notable traits:  He’s smaller than the average 9-year-old mostly due to his condition.  He was born with no eyes and extra fingers, as well as internal issues that will probably inevitably kill him young.  He has a very tongue-in-cheek outlook on life and is otherwise a pretty good kid.  

Millicent Cabot

Stage Name: N/A (Does not perform directly, works as a fortune teller and stagehand)

Nicknames: Millie

Nationality: Zaunite, originally Demacian

Age: 13

Gender: Female

Height: Around 5′4″ or so 

Build: Average

Abilities: Millie shows a lot of promise in her skills as a healer, as well as having (completely random, uncontrolled) prophetic vision.  It’s rumored among the carnies that she has the capability of bringing the dead back to life and may have been kicked out of her home because of it, but no one knows the whole story except Jack.  

Notable traits: One of the many vagrant outcast children Jack took under his wing, and the one who’s been around Jack the longest.  She seems to hold the ringmaster in particularly high regard despite his obvious shortcomings.  She’s one of only a handful of them who refers to him as ‘dad’.   

Abigail and Adelaide Dowry 

Stage Name: The Dowry Sisters

Nickname: Abi and Ade, the girls

Nationality: Zaunite

Age: 8 

Height: 4′4″

Build: Conjoined at the pelvis but otherwise average

Abilities: They have no known magical prowess, but they’re very good at performing certain stunts that are remarkable even if one does not consider their condition.

Notable traits:  They’re conjoined twins, sharing part of their digestive tract and lower body but with completely separate torsos.  They’re among the handful of children who Jack adopted from the orphanage in Zaun.     

Rayyani

Stage name: The Swamp Demon, Manta-Ray

Nicknames: Fish, Ray, Fish Boy, Slimy 

Nationality: Unknown aquatic vastayan tribe

Abilities: Most of his abilities seemed to be centered around the use of water-based magic and camouflage magic.  He is a very good swimmer.  

Notable Traits:  It’s unknown where he came from exactly, and he doesn’t have much skill in any human language, so asking is out of the question.  He tends to stick around the handful of other vastaya who are a part of the circus.

Abilities: They’re all particularly skilled when it comes to coordinating feats of incredibly impressive athleticism, usually high above the ground.  They’re also great at robbing people, but that’s not a part of their act.   

Notable Traits: Jack took them in when they were in their late teens after they tried to jump him and steal everything on his person.  One of them actually succeeded in this, but rather than get angry Jack found their skills impressive and offered them a place to stay and a job.  The three of them are not actually related-- they were just another group of wayward street urchins working together, but Jack spun a tale to tell on stage whenever they perform.  He seems to believe his own stories despite being reminded constantly that they are, in fact, a product of his own invention.

Iwakura Lain (岩倉 玲音 Iwakura Rein, also rendered as レイン, ｌａｉｎ or れいん) is the main protagonist of the serial experiments lain series. She is female, 14 in the anime, 11-14 in the game, and of an unknown age in other works. Visually, she is characterized by her short, brown, asymmetrical hair, one lock of which is secured by a hairclip. Masami Eiri, in his desire to conquer reality, uses her as a pawn.

Personality: Across all the works in the Serial Experiments Lain series, Lain is portrayed as introverted, shy and quiet. Her preferences are also quite childish, and she possesses a large number of toys and other child-themed objects. She often derives comfort from these objects when she is afraid, akin to a security blanket. 

When it comes to interacting with others, she often has trouble making eye contact and having fluent conversation, many exchanges with her fellow classmates involving long pauses in her speech, and often looks visibly uncomfortable when asked questions. She usually does not speak unless spoken to and appears to find both talking to strangers and being the center of attention to be intimidating. Because of this, she has very few friends. However, on the Internet, Lain feels much more comfortable around people and is able to talk to them more easily, although she does not feel close to online acquaintances.

Generally, Lain appears to be indifferent to her surroundings, but she is actually very sensitive and worried about how others perceive her. As a result, Lain appears to be very concerned with her actions and how they affect other people, being terrified of being by herself or being universally rejected by everyone. 

Due to her lack of close family or friends, Lain is often very lonely and can become unhealthily attached to anyone she feels treats her nicely, to the point of obsession. As a result, she often worries even more how people who know her perceive her and is quick to doubt herself and her friends; however, when she interacts with them, she feels elated and far more optimistic. If anyone she is close to leaves her life, Lain becomes heartbroken and worries about the others that remain. She is fiercely loyal to those she cares about and tries her best to care for them, although she often worries that she is not doing a good job of doing so. Terrible things happening to people, regardless of whether they are close to her or not, seem to deeply emotionally disturb Lain, often causing her to cry.

If Lain is completely alone, she becomes desperate and afraid of her own inner faults. In order to distract herself, Lain often throws herself into a specialization that interests her, such as programming or psychology and further isolated herself. However, extended periods of solitude cause Lain to begin to lose her mind, and she eventually neglects herself and becomes extremely depressed. It is possible that being left alone too long could result in her suicide.

When Lain is afraid, she will often want comfort from others, despite rarely approaching them directly, not wanting to burden them. If she cannot get comfort from other people, she will hide behind objects she designates as security blankets, like her bear pajamas, NAVI, Bike-chan, or Progenitis. If she is truly terrified or overwhelmed she will have what appears to be a panic attack of some kind, curling into a ball and shaking, apparently completely immobilized.

When it comes to Lain's specialization skills, she is extremely curious and hungry for information, avidly consuming information at astonishing speeds and learning very quickly. It does not take her long to become an expert on a subject, and she shows extreme prowess in both hardware and software, as well as aspects of philosophy, psychology and sociology. She appears to be able to analyze, recall and process data very quickly, working at high speeds and often doing several things at once. Many tasks that are difficult for experts are easy for her. Despite appearing to be highly intelligent, Lain is an extremely poor student, having a difficult time paying attention in class.

Lain seems to consider herself to be abnormal and often blames herself for bad things that happen around her or the troubles of loved ones, becoming easily depressed. She also often feels isolated from society and alone, and seems to want to fit in more than anything, but her shyness and social anxiety often gets in the way. Lain is also very easily embarrassed, which further worsens her low self-esteem and shyness. She often struggles with her identity due to the circumstances around her, a struggle that often confuses and frightens her.

When Lain finally feels that she has discovered her identity, she is at peace and seems to be quietly content with herself, her previous self-doubts becoming minimal.

Other Personalities: Lain's personality becomes another matter entirely when her alter-ego, the so-called "Lain of the Wired", steps into Lain's flesh body to act directly in the real world. In times of extreme stress, Lain's disembodied self might briefly inhabit her flesh body, suddenly causing a surge of confidence and brashness backed up by superhuman power. This personality appears fearless and ruthless, but not cruel (not to be confused with Evil Lain, the spinoff identity created by the Knights' hacking). She is also much more socially comfortable in this state, although this social comfort level seems to come and go coincident with Lain's visits to Cyberia, where unusual mind-altering technology exists. This "Lain of the Wired" personality also exists independent of Lain Iwakura the human; they seem to only share experiences part-time.

Yet a third personality also exists, apparently resulting from outside tampering upon both of the others. This third personality, is a cruel, inhuman prankster, and is apparently comfortable committing both mischief and murder. Like Lain of the Wired, it exists primarily in the Wired but is also capable of inhabiting and controlling Lain Iwakura's human body on occasion.

Anime Biography: At the beginning of the anime, Lain is technologically illiterate and extremely shy. She hardly even checks her email and is visibly uncomfortable when doing so. While operating her old children's NAVI, she puts on a bear hat. This, like her bear suit, provides comfort to her and helps her face situations that she is intimidated by.

Lain's behaviour changes when she gets a proper NAVI. When online, she behaves much more confidently and assertively. Another Lain, commonly referred to by the fandom as "evil Lain", already exists in the Wired and, according to Lain in Layer 08, acts like the part of Lain that she hates.

Lain appears to be highly intelligent and has a range of skills. The anime shows her learning extremely quickly how a NAVI functions and can even help the boss of the Men in Black repair his extremely old NAVI. Also, the manga shows some of Lain's skills in programming, as she modifies her plush dog, Bike-chan, to be able to bark. In the game, Lain becomes interested in psychology and is able to use that knowledge on Yonera Touko, her therapist, when she becomes unstable.

She is quite distant from her family and rarely speaks at home. At school, she is similarly quiet, although she begins to hang out with Alice, Reika and Juri. Of the three, only Alice seems to have any real emotional connection with her.

Lain is revealed to be the product of the human collective unconscious that took form in the Wired. This means that there is a different image of Lain in each person's mind, represented by the chattering Lain mannequins in Layer 08. This led to Lain's identity crisis that forms a major plot point in the anime.

Lain considers herself to be a being that exists only in the memories of others, so when she edits herself out during the reset, it is almost a form of suicide - although the Wired itself still retains her data, there are no people who truly remember her.
