Where the Heart Is

When my mother and my father and my brother are swallowed up by the damp earth

I will let this house rot and sag under its own weight

The beams in the roof will collapse while the centipedes collect the payment due to them for our brief stay

The foundation and the countertops, proud concrete and haughty marble, will sink into the waiting earth's eager maw as if claiming the bodies of the newly deceased

I will give the lawn my father so carefully cut in straight military lines permission to grow wild to its heart's content

I will be the last one to cross the threshold and take air into my lungs

When the city condemns the house, they will only be stating a fact I have known for decades: that this building is unsuitable for human habitation
