“I have learned to seek my happiness by limiting my desires, rather than in attempting to satisfy them.”
Tumblr media
John Stuart Mill was an English philosopher, political economist, politician and civil servant. One of the most influential thinkers in the history of liberalism. (20 May 1806 – 7 May 1873.)
Proponent of Utilitarianism: John Stuart Mill was a leading advocate of utilitarianism, a moral philosophy originally developed by Jeremy Bentham. Utilitarianism is the ethical theory that actions are right if they promote the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. Mill expanded on Bentham's ideas, emphasizing qualitative differences in pleasures.
Author of "On Liberty": Mill's seminal work "On Liberty" (1859) is a cornerstone of liberal political philosophy. In it, he argues for the importance of individual freedom and autonomy, asserting that society should only restrict individual actions if they harm others, encapsulating this idea in what is known as the Harm Principle.
Advocate for Women's Rights: Mill was an early and passionate advocate for gender equality. In his book "The Subjection of Women" (1869), he argued for the legal and social equality of women, making a strong case against the oppression and disenfranchisement of women in Victorian society.
Influence on Political Economy: As a political economist, Mill made significant contributions to economic theory. His "Principles of Political Economy" (1848) was a comprehensive survey of economic thought and policy, covering topics such as supply and demand, labour, and the role of government in the economy. It was a standard textbook for decades.
Early Education and Intellectual Development: Mill had an extraordinary early education, rigorously guided by his father, James Mill. By the age of three, he was reading Greek, and by eight, he was proficient in Latin. His intensive and broad education laid the groundwork for his later intellectual achievements, making him one of the most learned individuals of his time.

when my grandfather moved to the us after living through wwii in occupied norway he said the most striking thing he noticed here was the waste. the wastefulness, the sheer amount of excess stuff and the fever for consumption and how blasé people were as they threw it all away. and despite nominal awareness of the issue since then and and sometimes-counterproductive efforts to recycle, overconsumption trends have only gotten worse. trash, like any other ‘flow’ of materials, goods, etc, has gone global, and accumulates unevenly between where it is produced and where its burdens fall
which is a tangible, material disaster for the people living next to incinerators and landfills (in environmental justice communities of the imperial core; or abroad, in the poor countries where the rich ones dump their waste), and for the people doing the also-toxic and dangerous work extracting all the materials and making the things that are destined for the landfill, and it’s also a psychological and paradigmatic disaster for the overconsumers: to be so disconnected from where your stuff comes from and what it really costs, to expect endless cheap varieties of food and consumer goods from all over the world, to think no further than the instant gratification of next-day-delivered fast fashion orders or a new phone every year, to not realize that what you throw out never really goes away. the ‘western consumer lifestyle’, wherever it’s practiced, depends on and enforces the willful ignorance of its consequences and the disinclination to see other people and places as real. and while most waste is industrial, not just your personal household trash, the finished products you throw out have an industrial history too, and are tied to far more waste than you’ll ever personally see. which is to say not just ‘we shouldn’t buy so many things’ or ‘we shouldn’t send our trash to be dumped in other people’s countries’ - true, but also most of these things should never even be made

Canada is preparing for war with the United States.
Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau says threats made by Donald Trump should be taken seriously.
This week Trudeau plans on shoring up alliances with allies in the EU and NATO.
Canadians have also started boycotting US made products and US businesses, focusing on those made by "red states".
Many provinces have pulled US made liquor from shelves to boycott the US.
Businesses in Canada plan to stop working with businesses in the US and have begun making plans to start working with business in other countries, such as those in the EU.
Canadian businesses are focusing on self sufficiency and trade diversification

I say this as a design student myself but like…. Design As An Academic Degree would be far more enjoyable if lecturers believed in design as a creative problem solving measure that can take whatever forms of creative approach it wants and actually encourage a wide variety of subject matter, style, and ideas and Not design as in a monolithic cliquey subgenre of modern/contemporary art defined by white collar avant garde collages profiting off of aestheticising systemic issues, governed by some of the most socially ignorant people you’ve ever met. The entire ethos of this course is pretty much “I don’t know how to tell you what design is, you just have to know how to do it” and then going “No that’s not it” to anything you show them and when you ask them why not they give you a different answer Every Time. This is the only course I’ve ever done that’s given me like negative net information if that’s somehow even possible. My only take away is that whoever runs these degrees isn’t actually teaching design, they’re just teaching you how to be trendy. This is exemplified by the fact not once in two years did we ever take a class or discuss what design even is, how to do it, how to contextually and realistically apply it, and how it has changed over the centuries, yet had an entire year long module, twice, on social networking and gallery exhibiting. Doesn’t help the whole lot is made worse by the fact that lecturers who refuse to acknowledge their style bias will stop at nothing to impose that onto a project to the point you’re nearly having to appease them over the client. Hoping it’s just where I live but I’m sadly gathering this is not an isolated issue

My Coronabeth Dominant Twin manifesto is simple and it's as follows: there's no way the twins could have planned for Canaan House.
John requesting new Lyctors wasn't something anyone in the Houses would've expected to happen in their lifetimes with any meaningful probability. This means that when the Tridentarii started the double necromancer ruse, they expected to carry on for life. It was an arrangement that benefited Corona vastly more than Ianthe.
What Ianthe got out of it, as far as we know: Corona would rule Ida, which she isn't keen on (as per NtN). But it also meant that Ianthe signed up for a life in her sister's shadow, with everyone regarding Corona as the perfect heir and Ianthe as the lame spare. Worse, for Ianthe, everyone believed Corona was the better flesh magician (as per As Yet Unsent). There's a lot more in for Corona in this arrangement and a lifetime of mild humiliation for Ianthe. As we see during the reveal in GtN, she was just dying to tell anyone that SHE is the necromantic genius of the pair, actually.
On their relationship with Babs: in GtN, Gideon notices that Babs obeys Ianthe's orders over Corona's. She also notices that Corona looks shocked about this — to me, this means that it's NOT something Coronabeth is used to. Pre-Canaan House, they are equals in their ruse. At Canaan House, it becomes obvious that if Ianthe ascends she'll leave Corona in the dust, and their relationship has to change. I don't think the way they act around each other from Canaan House onwards is at all representative of their relationship back on the Third, and I don't think Babs deferring to Ianthe over Corona is something that has happened often before, if at all.
There's the bit where Corona routinely threatened suicide to get her way since they were teenagers. In NtN she's doing it to save Camilla's life, but she reminisces fondly about it like it was something she did often to get her way, like it was a fun mind game they played with each other.
You've also got Ianthe calling Corona a bimbo and insulting her and whatever, and me arguing that Corona pulled the few strings doesn't make Ianthe good but as things stand I'm much more inclined to believe that, before Ianthe attained Lyctorhood, Corona was the one in charge — and I’m also firmly convinced that she’s using BoE for her own ends, and we’ll see her Fuck Shit Up in AtN.

"as per my previous text, i notified you of the fact that i will be out late tonight as i have important business to tend to at the company. i apologize if my message got lost in translation. following this event, i will be assured to apprise you of any changes in my schedule beforehand. best regards, your boo bear myungjae."
"good evening, my love. i was informed of the fact that you are bringing food after the commencement of your work day, but i have already placed an order from a separate location. if it is in your scope, do you mind donating the food to the upper dorm upon arrival, or shall we assess other ways to go about this miscommunication?"
"regarding the events that took place earlier this afternoon, i can assure you that i did not look at that woman with any malicious intent. in relation to this, i observed that you are dismayed with my actions and are giving me the "silent treatment". if you are set in your views, i completely understand and am willing to set up a time where we can discuss this further. i love you baby im sorry plz call me back"

the reason that thinking about communism too much in disco elysium makes you suicidal but organizing with other communists leads to a moment of singular wonder and provides hope that miracles can happen is because thats what being a communist is like in real life

jordie lives au where jordie becomes not like kaz but like one of those stiff, ignorant men of ketterdam who can’t see the connection between the barrel rats and the merchers, who dream of being one of the top dogs in the city but never reach it. that was the main aspect of his character, right? he wanted to be rich, but he was too ignorant to understand that the system was set to make the rich men richer and the poor men poorer. kaz was always the smart one, and so kaz will develop into the same infamous barrel thug he’d always been destined to be, and he would still hate pekka because, in a way, it was like jordie still died because of him. because of pekka, kaz saw his big brother’s weaknesses for the first time, and whether jordie lives or dies, kaz can’t help but hate him for his ignorance at the same time he loves the boy he remembers to be his doting big brother.

"You are smirking at me, Moist!"
No, I've frozen because I've just heard what my mouth said, Moist thought. I don't have a clue, I've just got some random thoughts. It's...
"It's about desert islands," he said. "And why this city isn't one."
"And that's it?"
Moist rubbed his forehead. "Miss Cripslock, Miss Cripslock...this morning I got up with nothing in mind but to seriously make headway with the paperwork and maybe lick the problem of that special 25p Cabbage Green stamp. You know, the one that'll grow into a cabbage if you plant it? How can you expect me to come up with a new fiscal initiative by teatime?"
"All right, but--"
"It'll take me at least until breakfast."

President Donald Trump is giving a Virtual Address to the World Economic Forum where he continues to threaten U.S allies with tariffs
Tariff’s are a form of taxes added to imported/exported goods
He is planning on implementing a 20-25% tariff on all imports from Mexico, Canada and now additional foreign nations.
Imports from Canada include Energy, Natural Gas, Oil, Steel, Aluminum, Seafood, Grain, Fruits, Vegetables and more.
Imports from Mexico include vehicles, automotive parts, machinery, fruits, vegetables (such as avocados), clothing, footwear, grains and more.
Companies will pass the added tariff tax costs onto the price of goods they are sending out thus making the goods more expensive. With Mexico and Canada being 2 of the United States biggest trade partners, a lot of prices of goods will skyrocket.
He plans on implementing tariffs to Mexico and Canada starting February 1st
