Continuing on with this fandom meme, this time for my long-time fandom that's been surprisingly more popular than I thought it would be, Saiyuki!

Send me a letter and I’ll tell you which character…

A: Is most attractive (to me): Honestly, this one tends to fluctuate a lot. It’s changed every time I’ve read or reread the manga as to which person I find most attractive, though let’s be real…they’re all attractive. This latest time around though, I was very, very much into Gojyo!

B: Gets bored the fastest: It’s a toss up between Goku and Gojyo. Gojyo is more of a quiet, lazy bored though as compared to Goku’s much more antsy, louder, and whinier bored.

C: Is the most open to cuddling: Gojyo craves physical touch. The reasons why are numerous and probably something he should discuss with a therapist, if only their world had those, but that physical contact? That act of just feeling someone against you, alive and real and wanting to be there with you? It’s something he would honestly go a little insane without. Cuddling and physical contact is a necessity for him, to the point he seeks it in random women he can pick up just to have it.

D: Fears death the most: Despite having so much power and control over it, or maybe because of that, Hazel has a proper fear of death, more so than any other character I could think of.

E: Is the most emotive: A ‘stupid monkey’, Goku rarely thinks about hiding what he’s thinking or feeling. Most of the time, he’s upfront and his emotions and reactions are somewhat easy to see or guess, especially so for those who know him well.

F: Is my favourite: All of the main four, to be honest, and Dokugakuji. They all kind of tie for the same place as there’s so much about each character that entertains and intrigues me and gets me to thinking and wondering. Purely to write about, I feel Gojyo edges everyone out though as he’s always come the most naturally to me to write for.

G: Has the greenest thumb: I feel like Yaone not only has a green thumb but genuinely enjoys plants and gardening. She’d definitely be a plant mama if she could and would have names for her plants and would hum or talk to them.

H: Trusts their horoscope the most: Lirin is quite superstitious that way, something the others make fun of her for.

I: Tends to idolize people they shouldn’t: While her reasoning is sound, and it’s not idolization but approval she craves, Lirin does have some issues in that area.

J: Tells the most dad jokes: Hakkai likes puns. Does that make him a dad? If so, he’d be okay with that. It’s better than everyone considering him the team mom! His puns are delivered so stealthily too, with the same serene expression he often wears, and he never explains the pun.

K: Is the most skilled in the kitchen: I hate giving the same answer over and over, but it really is Hakkai. He is a good cook and does honestly enjoy cooking for others.

L: Lies the most: Nii. It’s more half-truth or things that could vaguely be interpreted as true most of the time, just to give himself some leeway if anyone should accuse him but honestly, he’s perfectly content to lie and manipulate and actually enjoys doing so.

M: Is the biggest memer: If memes existed in the world of Saiyuki, I feel that all of Kougaiji’s group except for Kougaiji would be all into memes. And they’d constantly bombard Kougaiji with them because the poor man just does not understand them.

N: Needs way more attention from me: Honestly, thinking about it, the answer kind of surprised me but it’s definitely Kougaiji. I can count on one hand the number of times I think I’ve actually written anything for him, despite thinking that he’d be one of the most popular. Normally, it’s just the main four I write for, or their previous incarnations.

O: Has the most OCs of their own: I feel like Goku wins this one. He made up friends, people, stories to occupy his mind in those long years he spent alone because it was the only way to protect his mind.

P: Is the purest, most perfect cinnamon roll: Jeep. It’s Jeep because it sure as hell isn’t anyone else!

Q: Is the quickest to judge others: Sanzo is a judgmental asshole. I love him to death, but he’d probably judge me for even that.

R: Feels the most detached from reality: Reality? Nii could really stand to learn what that even is. I really don’t think he’s fully aware, living in his mind as much as he does, spinning and spiraling plans and plots…that and the man is insane. That’s about as far from reality as a mind can go.

S: Has the strongest spirit: There is not one single character among the main cast of characters who do not have strong spirits. They simply could not live if they didn’t.

T: Is the most terrifying: This is just for me personally, but Nii scares the ever-living shit out of me as a character. He’s crazy but such a smart crazy and it makes him dangerous beyond belief.

U: Is the most unapologetic for the way they live their life: All of the characters do. They’ve all made hard choices and been through a lot. They stick by their decisions; they live the lives they’ve chosen and give it all they have.

V: Is the best at video games: If video games existed, I really feel like both Hakkai and Sanzo would be insanely good gamers. With his pretty face and filthy mouth, I could actually see Sanzo becoming a popular Twitch streamer, only at the insistence of the others.

W: Watches the most anime: Again, assuming anime was a thing in their world…I feel it would have been Tenpou. He seems like he’d be all into many types of anime, but especially Shonen or gag anime, and would get really into a lot of fandoms.

X: Is the most xenial towards complete strangers: Hazel but only if those complete strangers are yokai or half yokai. Basically, anything along those lines and he thinks you’re trash to be wiped out.

Y: Yells the most: Sanzo, but to be fair, they normally give him a reason to yell at them.

Z: Gets the most overzealous over something others wouldn’t expect: Dokugakuji actually really likes poetry, especially haiku. While he sucks at writing, having horribly illegible handwriting, he enjoys spoken poetry and is pretty good at making them up himself when he’s in the right mood.

They're celebrities. People are going to find celebrities attractive, especially if these are people they see on screens and billboards every day. If you pick up the nearest magazine you find you're probably going to find Junko Enoshima in it. And maybe you should consider that those "weirdos" who are walking up to Hajime are simply fans that want to greet him. We've watched these people fight through hell, cry, laugh, and find hope along the way. For as long as you had lived among them, you had no such thing. If one had been given to you in the life before you knew the dragons, it was long forgotten. Day 4: Happy birthday, Sousuke!

It's Sousuke's birthday, so I went a little overboard with my day 4 entry 😅

A/N: Haematemesis is the medical term for vomiting of blood

September 14th fell on a Wednesday this year, and Makoto was surprised to overhear loud noises coming from the GI clinic at five in the afternoon when he left his office. There were no GI consultations on Wednesdays if he remembered correctly.

And Makoto would remember everything correctly. So he rounded the corner out of curiosity and saw the team of GI doctors busy decorating the hallway with grey balloons and black, lettered flags that spelt out ‘Happy birthday, Sousuke!’.

“Makoto,” Rin called to him. It was naturally Haru’s boyfriend who first spotted him standing and staring at the flags. “You have perfect timing! Please, help!”

Dr Kirishima also appeared delighted to see him. “Yes! Makoto-kun, please lend us any of your personnel who are available right now, please?” As if sensing his concern, Dr Kirishima quickly added, “We have gotten approval from Dr Azuma for this celebration already, don’t you worry! He even offered to cover for us in the ward from five to seven, so we’d have time to make it a party. We’re just a little short on manpower right now to properly spruce up the place.”

The head of their division was an incredibly thoughtful superior in that case, Makoto was impressed.

“He covered for you, Natsuya! You’re the one with limited time,” Dr Mikoshiba laughed. “You, and our birthday boy. The rest of us will party hard and are free to drink all the booze we want!”

“Heck yeah,” Rin, too, rejoiced at that. “Please join in on the fun if you’d like, Makoto? You know how rare it is for the entire GI team to gather together other than for work. I even asked Haru to come, he’ll enjoy himself better with you here too.”

“You’re only inviting the nurses as well for extra helping hands,” said Haru flatly as he showed up just then. He probably headed here immediately from his department despite his complaints. “I’m leaving as soon as we finish setting up.”

“That’s not true, we invited our tech guy too for him to help out,” Dr Mikoshiba interrupted with glee, patting his brother’s back a little too hard for it to not be an intentional distraction to his candle-counting.

“Nii-san is the worst!” retorted Momo-kun once he finished counting thirty of them.

“This reminds me,” Dr Kirishima managed to fish out his phone even with the number of confetti poppers he had in hand. “I have a younger brother who is free too now that the pharmacy counters are closed.”

Makoto gave a chuckle. He would like to stay, just to assist with the preparations of the celebration like Haru would if nothing else. The hospital’s policy did detail that alcohol was only prohibited wherever and whenever clinical activity was taking place, anyway. The GI team would be fine.

“On the top of my head,” he finally offered. Nagisa was an obvious choice for how much he loved a good get-together, but he was stationed at the GI ward until seven, leaving him out of the question. “I recall that Nitori-kun would be coming in for the night shift later. I’ll ask him if he’s free to come in earlier for the party then?”

And as expected, Nitori-kun was down for it. They all made quick work of the decorations while they waited. Ikuya later brought in the cake from their delivery driver at the hospital's main entrance and Nitori-kun was promptly put in charge of calling Sousuke in while still panting as he reached.

“Me?”

“Yes, you,” Dr Mikoshiba instructed. “Make up a fake patient and tell him there’s an emergency, say the rest of us are not available and he’s scheduled to be on an in-hospital call later anyway.”

So Nitori-kun, despite his apprehension, was forced to make the call before his breathing even calmed down. Sousuke picked up on the first ring even when he had an hour left before his on-call duty.

“Dr Yamazaki!” Nitori-kun exclaimed as if taken aback by how fast it was answered, and put the call on loudspeaker. “There has been an emergency, please come to the clinic!”

“The clinic’s closed today. Wouldn’t I be needed at the ED instead?” He first expressed doubts, before quickly proceeding to brush that off and asking for a breakdown of the case.

“It’s a 30-year-old male patient,” Nitori-kun frantically looked around for any ideas, before locking eyes with Makoto. “It’s- it’s Tachibana-senpai!”

The rest of the team could barely hide their snickers while Makoto paled from the imminent embarrassment.

“Makoto?!” Sousuke sounded alarm (as would anyone in his situation, why would the nursing manager be having a gastrointestinal-related emergency out of the left field), concern evident in his tone. Makoto could feel that tiny sliver of hope rising up again at that and at the use of his first name, but he rapidly swallowed it back down. The mortification he’d be feeling in front of Sousuke soon was enough to snuff out any sparks in his chest.

“Nitori, details of the case!” Sousuke demanded after Nitori-kun was quiet for a while, too busy trying to come up with a fake history. Shuffling came from the other end of the phone line, he must have been moving in a rush.

“Uh, erm, senpai presented with- with haematemesis!” Nitori-kun gulped. “He just got off work—that’s right—that’s why he’s at the clinic.”

Someone in the team let out a giggle. It wasn’t caught on by the other end, apparently, as Sousuke continued gravelly, “History of presenting complaint? Any medical conditions? His medication history?”

Nitori-kun couldn’t give any coherent answers to that and only stuttered into the phone. In his defence, Sousuke basically fired the line of questions at him without waiting for a response. He still reprimanded Nitori-kun sternly nonetheless. “What was that report with how many years you’ve been a nurse now, Nitori?”

“To be fair, I’m panicking! It’s my manager we’re talking about here,” Nitori-kun whined. “Please get to the clinic as soon as possible, none of the other GI internists are available.”

“What? How is that possible- just get him to the ED already! I’ll be there in 15.”

“Noooo, come to the clinic!”

“Sousuke,” Makoto interrupted the call, exasperated at Nitori-kun’s helplessness. He wouldn’t want all the efforts of a surprise party going to waste, so he’d have to do it himself. “Bright red vomit, accompanied by pallor and dizziness. No known medical illness and not on any medications.” He tried to sound weak and mumbled some when providing the details, even adding a cough at the end for good measure.

“Please come over to the clinic, I’m too sick to walk all the way to the ED and Nitori-kun is panicking too hard right now to get any sort of meaningful help,” he added at the end.

There was the sound of a car door opening and more shuffling before Sousuke steadied his breath and puffed in reply. “Okay- okay, I’m on my way.”

The team cheered noisily when the call ended, patting Makoto on the back for the good job well done. Although he was apologetic for lying to Sousuke, he hoped the party he’d helped set up would more than make up for the deception and it’d be truly an enjoyable birthday for Sousuke.

A party that Makoto didn’t stay for, because he was a coward who couldn’t deal with pretending to not recognise Sousuke anymore. He left alongside Haru, all the while contemplating whether he should get it off his chest by talking to Haru about it.

In the end, he didn’t. Haru was never the friend who could offer him words of advice when it came to matters of the heart, after all.

Maybe Rin could do that in his stead. If not… well, Makoto was out of ideas.

I do think Cairngorm is a very interesting character. I really like them- I just wish Ichikawa was more clear on if the switch was really honest or if they just got manipulated by Aechmea. I always thought it was more of manipulation as I felt like the prince just put on gender roles so that Cairn (or Welegato at this point) would be more like a “wife”.

I think so especially since gems don’t have concept of gender…AT ALL. I don’t think Wele is really trans if it’s not even really a thing in their society and if I remember correctly they still used their old pronouns (I could be wrong tho). I think it’s a weird switch from how the hnk fandom knowing how manipulative Aechmea is doesn’t really question that much if what happened to Welegato was actually controlled by him or something.

But honestly- i really love seeing different takes on this character since I love them a lot- so I’m happy to see anyone talking about them, wether I agree with them or not. You don’t have to answer to this hjshshsj.

Well, I do think it being ambiguous is the intent, and there definitely is room for Aechmea being manipulative and the gender stuff being part of that

But!

So far in this story I've erred on the side of characters being less sinister than they could be, and tbh I think that's been accurate. Kongou was ultimately as good as he seemed, Aechmea was revealed to basically be a bodhisattva (forgoing his own chance at eternal rest to spend thousands of years trying to help those who would be left behind), etc.

It's like... It feels like there's a consistent theme of people hurting others not out of malice or even necessarily selfishness, but out of a want to do something good. Kongou wanted to build a paradise for the gems, Aechmea wanted all the damned souls to get rest, Phos wanted... a lot of things, but none of them particularly bad.

And all of them caused so much suffering with those pure wishes

So basically tl;dr it feels more thematically consistent if he was genuinely trying to help, at least to me.

And for the gender stuff like, I think the moon chapters are very aware of the fact that the gems do not have gender, and Werregat (that's what my translation uses at least) being so feminine is very much an outlier.

(there's even the bit around the wedding where what's his face calls Phos a woman and then goes "well, that's not right" and Phos is just kind of confused)

And like, the easy analogy from their situation to a trans person's, the big shifts in presentation, them being the gem who wants to change their body most, them being the one gem that gets a new name, on top of the direct gender stuff

feels like it's supposed to be a kind of transition, or at least choosing to adopt a gender when they previously had none. Which is to say, the gems don't have gender... but the Lunarians do, and on being introduced to the concept Werregat seemingly embraced it.

(and as for pronouns, that's complicated b/c in Japanese you can easily just avoid using gendered pronouns at all, and I assume that the text just continued to do that even after Cairn became Princess and such. so like, less continuing to use whatever pronouns and more continuing to not use them.

with that said like. eh. even if it were originally english, pronouns don't have to change, things are complicated. even when I say Werregat is trans I don't strictly mean they're literally a human trans woman so much as there is Gender going on, and it's feminine when it usually isn't.

also like, the rare occasions the language demands you do use gendered pronouns the gems tend to lean male (like Bort calling Dia "nii-san" and not "nee-san"), and again, it's just hard not to take Werregat being so feminine as a reversal of that.)

anyway, I don't know how much this makes sense but. yeag. 👍

im seeing a lot of the poppy war on ur blog, and it looks pretty cool! what it is it, is it a book, or a tv series, or what?

It’s a book trilogy by R. F. Kuang. It’s fantasy, and uh… incredibly dark. A tragedy happens in book one in a city called Golyn Niis that I still think about. It is absolutely horrifying, and it took me days to process. There are other horrifying and graphic parts in the books, but nothing else on that level. This series is not for the faint of heart, and it has a tragic ending.

Part of the story has a lot of historical background since that’s what the author was studying at the time. Golyn Niis is based on the Rape of Nanking. What happens after Golyn Niis in book one is based on Dr. Shiro’s labs in World War II. There were no survivors of his prisons.

The second and third books are based on Chinese civil wars that created many, many horrors. They also have a race called the Hesperians (based on crusading Catholics) who previously colonized the land. The problem with them is that to them the main characters and their race are not people and they never will be.

I enjoyed the grim world and the characters, and the tragedy was perfect because it was clear it couldn’t end any other way. I also adore the clear evidence that the author ships Zutara from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

At first I didn’t think I’d want to even keep or reread these books because of how difficult the content is, but I actually think I will!

Okay, so to start out, Rin is a poor war orphan who comes from the south of Nikara, thought to be lesser and backwards and dirty because of their skin. Rin is going to be sold into marriage to an older man. To escape this she takes a test called the Keju to see if she can get into any Imperial academies and which one. She gets into the military academy of Sinegard, where she is immediately the underdog. She makes a few rivals and one friend, and one of the teachers is incredibly wild and seems to have his head screwed on a bit wrong, if you know what I mean. He ends up becoming her master and she learns so much under him about what truly created the world, the Pantheon of 64 gods, and she learns about shamanism. Before she can finish school the Mugenese (previous colonizers) from the Longbow Island invade. Cue the beginning of all the horrors and the reshaping of Nikara itself.

Some Dr. Horrible songs popped up in my YouTube suggestions and I listened to them for nostalgia but I was also immediately hit with, “oh no why does this fit NIY!Leo? Oh this is really good for NIY!Leo and NIY!Mikey’s dynamic” lol if only I could draw the animatics that now exist solely in my head.
