Using Food Scales!
Food scales are a wonderful resource for people with diabetes. Often it is challenging to estimate how many grams of carbohydrate are in certain foods that don’t come with nutrition labels. And sometimes those food labels can be so confusing and frustrating. For one of our pasta products that we use here at camp, 2 oz of dry pasta is 44 g. Who eats dry pasta? I used the scale to weigh 2 oz of dry pasta pieces to figure out what type of volume measurement we could use. Turns out, 46 pieces (2 oz dry) or 1 cooked cup is 44 g of carbohydrate!
This picture shows a 7.5 oz tomato. Tomatoes are about 1 gram of carbohydrate per oz, so I’m sure you can figure out how many carbs are in this delicious food!
