same with the intro to the greeting-- iconic. i'm glad that Kai is as done with Yul as ever. on one hand, if Kai is living in the woods, i don't know why he needs to tie himself to human conceptions of wealth and status. on the other hand, if he has no job, i could see grabbing a quick buck with which to pick up food or supplies could be very handy.

imagine if these two were on the Cyan team instead of... Tom and Aiden, I guess (as the only two guys on that team). that would be so chaotic. i imagine Kai and Gabby would get along well, while Ellie would absolutely kick Yul's ass. Ellie not making merge robbed us of that.

i can see why they'd make a popular streaming channel, because this clip was cute as hell. i like how quickly they trade (joking) insults with each other. they're always on the same page, no matter how quickly the topic of conversation changes.

honestly, having a sort of "speed dating" (not literally) kind of show with most of/all of the contestants would make a really interesting miniseries. i don't know how it would happen, but if ONC made episodes that were basically just like eight of these double greetings back to back (maybe with a bit of plot interconnecting them), i'm sure fans would eat it up.

it would also be really interesting to combine contestants with hosts. like, what would even happen if you got Trevor and Grett in a greeting with just each other...?

Grett is such a fun villain character. i love how she does fully step up to the plate as a role, so she's not as serious about being mean as someone like Riya or Yul. plus, if she hadn't stepped up to stop the men's alliance, Miriam probably would have been eliminated, and then who knows who would have won?

(of course, i guess there are decent odds it could have been Alec. uh oh, now i've given you another reason to be mad at Grett /j)

Hi! Thank you for the kind words and I'm glad to be helping to at least tempt you into this pit, and I wish I had better recs for you, but I've been turning this over in my head for the last couple of days and keep coming back to that I don't know that I would recommend most of the animated series or movies/TV series for DC. Even the best bets would be: - Young Justice 2010 cartoon, which is overall decent, but DickBabs doesn't happen until like season 3, I think? (And I think Dick dates Kory for awhile before that?) And they're a very minor part of the show, even the Batfam as a whole is only one aspect of the show, it's really a multi-fam kind of series. As long as you know that it will have some major differences in relationship and character dynamics (like Superboy in the show and Kon from the comics share certain aspects, but they are also vastly different and I'm not sure you'd recognize Kon as the same character), it's a fun show to watch overall! - Batman: The Animated Series 1992 + The New Batman Adventures 1997 was absolutely, incredibly groundbreaking at the time it came out, but that means it's 30 years old now and a lot of it is going to be incredibly dated compared to current stuff. I do still love it and the Dick/Babs episodes are TOP NOTCH (so much delicious yearning oh my god) and the flashback to when Dick was a kid are also great, but there's a LOT of basic cartoon action stuff that's not that exciting anymore and it might feel like a long haul. Cautiously recommended if you don't mind viewing it through an old-fashioned lens, don't mind that Dick tends to be more in his "angry teenage years" than his more settled 20s, and you're okay with zipping through any parts that bore you. - The Batman 2004 is another series that's pretty dated, but in a way I find deeply charming, because it really leaned into the gothic aesthetic and wasn't afraid to try some new things with the character designs. I usually suggest skipping forward to season 4 when Dick shows up (and I greatly enjoy his and Babs' dynamic, they're kids at the time, it's not a romance here, but it's not hard to see that one day they could grow up into the characters they'll be in other versions) but the whole show is just a good Batman cartoon! Honorable mentions: - Justice League: The Animated Series 2001 which I don't think Dick or Babs ever appeared in, but is still probably THE best DC animated series. It's not super complex, but what it did, it did very well, and is still pretty influential to this day. - If you don't mind reading an online comic, the Wayne Family Adventures webtoon is a very easy intro point, has very pretty art, and will get you reasonably familiar with the characters! (I sort of liken it to LEGO adaptations, it's meant to be light-hearted and occasionally genuinely touching, it focuses on extremes of the characters and memeable moments, rather than the more sharp-edged comics, but that makes it all the better for an entry point imo.) Beyond that, I can't really think of anything I would necessarily recommend to help get new fans into the Batfam characters (I wouldn't recommend the Harley Quinn show as a starting place for them, nor the Teen Titans cartoon, and I don't really personally care for any of the animated movies personally, other than maybe Super Sons, which was absolutely adorable and a great intro to Jon and Damian), because DC has a really weird track record on adapting them into non-comics mediums and I just enjoy the comics so much more. Though, if others have recs or would offer a rebuttal against some of the suggestions, feel free, because I would love to have easier ways into the comics

Season 1, episodes 1-6

I forgot how good the writing and animation are in the first season, like they truly thrived under aniplex😔 the brief white blood period in I think season 3 shows us just how good we had it

I love seeing Hawk and Meliodas's relationship, and his star Boar earring😭 plus having the Boar hat as the main location is just so comforting !!

Also I JUST realized his name is hawk because of a ham hok😭😭 this is like when I realized toe mater's name was tomato at the ripe age of 18

I miss the holy knights being powerful. Like I get that the Sins are always more powerful than them, had a long way to go in terms of power ups, and meliodas straight up had most of his power sealed but like DAMN. They were so cool in season 1 !! Gil was such a badass😭 I guess I just wish that the holy knights powered up along with the Sins

Seeing the very first episode got me thinking about the original pilot Manga (chapter 0) and how cool it might have been !! Like I love the story we got, but I do think those versions of Mel and Elizabeth maybe would have been better than the ones we got😳 like I just really like Meli's original design, I feel like he looks a bit older, and chapter 0 Elizabeth is simply superior ngl. She's funny, brave, and assertive - a lot more like Liz and goddess Elizabeth, except funnier

The first half of season 1 has one of my fave intro and outros like damn I forgot how fucking cool they were. Some of my fave songs to !! (my all time fave is def howling from season 3 part 2 (i think lol) tho)

Also Gil is such a badass in early episodes, I love his strength !! This moment is the fucking coolest and you can't convince me otherwise

Overall, I think the attention to detail is just better, the sounds the armor makes, the animation and drawings (esp background characters), Meliodas just sounds a bit older too (and I have theories on his voice here if u want them 👀)

The whole perv thing is really exhausting really quickly. Almost surprised 14 year old me made it through this as the 2nd anime I ever watched and the 1st I watched alone

I feel like Diane got shorter through the seasons. Like she doesn't compare to Hawk Mama like she did in season 1, and I think that's a damn shame. Let my giant girl be giant !!

She's also a decent bit more violent and I enjoy that thoroughly. She's just a silly goofy kween😌

Okay SO in episode 5, when Ban is about to get his scar from the dragon handle sword, he tells Meliodas "you and me have been hanging together for a lot of years now." This scene takes place 12 years before present (bp). Does this mean Ban and Meliodas were friends before the formation of the Sins? Or was Ban the first after him and Merlin? Ban has been immortal 20 years BP, leaving 8 years in between present and the flashback. 8 years before this scene, Meliodas was still in Danafal/Danfor and would be for another 4 years. What does any of this mean? Idk, just thot it was intriguing lol.

Also how did I not notice this is the first time we see demon!Meliodas !! Baby's first sighting as an unnatural creature with otherworldly rage🥰🥰

Also the fact we never see the scar Gil gave him again lol. Plus him presumably needing to do demon mode so hellfire can heal him is actually rlly cool

Just thought about how Elizabeth laying her hand on his chest to check the scar was the first time in years his love touches him with gentleness or concern🥲🥲

The fact that it took me 6 years to realize that when Meliodas says he'll keep the promise he made to Elizabeth, even if she should die is referencing the promise he made to her originally to break their curses🥲😬😤😭😭😭😭

Really kind of adore stories with parent figures fighting to find and protect their lost child (figure) while that child simultaneously grows up to become someone no longer in need of protecting! Broken Earth, The Witcher.. would love to find more books/series with that element, I think. Currently developing my reading list (finally starting some Sanderson!) and thinking about switching to Storygraph... only thing is that it's not as heavily utilized among my friends so I wouldn't necessarily be able to keep up with what they're reading. I suppose I don't necessarily want to be a "follower" in my friend group when it comes to doing a good thing, especially not with something that's ultimately a fairly inconsequential switch. Maybe that's a winter break goal.

You know what's wild? Last year one of my labmates took the class with this final project I'm working on right now, and she was in a group of three or four. That's a pretty solid amount of manpower and brainpower for a twenty page paper (plus 10+ pages in supplementary material). I'M LITERALLY DOING THIS ALONE. Same assignment. All by my lonesome. Will I get there? Ya I think so. But STILL.

Is it the best thing I ever wrote? God no. And that's a shame because it could have been really good had I not taken off two days last week. But it's done.

I hate writing introductions with all my heart. Everything else is fine, but orienting my audience to a topic? I'd rather skip that bit, honestly. So yeah. My intro kinda sucks. I think it picks up when we start talking about the basis of the work at hand, but it's otherwise pretty boring. Citations very spotty, with an overreliance on one source (even though i skimmed a ton of papers n even took notes too).

ngl kinda sucks bc it's going to my advisor and I know I could've done better ("but why didn't you" BECAUSE I WANNA GO HOME. OKAY? IM TIRED OF THIS PLACE. IM TIRED IN GENERAL. god i cant wait to get home)

also. full disclaimer: i have both a huge sentimental connection to one piece (first ever manga, first read when i was like. 8.) and am an enjoyer of it current day (have read the whole thing 3 times. can and will bitch about it at length but genuinely do love it. have posted like. 45k worth of one piece fic.) so absolutely biased as hell.

show is silly goofy which is correct. one piece is silly goofy first and foremost. just relax, enjoy the ride, accept the cartoon shonen logic. once i did that i had a good time.

i 'm actually a fan of the changes made to pacing. breaking up the first chapter with all the luffy flashback lore makes a ton of sense for live action and makes more space for present-day stuff. we don't need to know all that right away. we'll get to it. episode was still a bit rushed but tbh the manga had that issue too with the early chapters (had a lot to do and oda did not yet have free rein to bloat)

along the same lines, introducing nami and zoro at the same time makes a lot of sense. gives us more time with both of them. get to see nami in her element a bit more-very cool. also the map gives them all more of a reason to be in shell town causing havoc.

i especially like the reworking of how zoro and luffy meet and how zoro teams up with him (not a crew! yet!). it always kind of bothered me that luffy somewhat coerced him into joining in the OG - thematically that was a cognitive dissonance, so luffy freeing him without expectation felt a) more luffy and b) will make zoro eventually joining more meaningful imo

do sort of wish that they'd somehow managed to keep zoro stubbornly hanging there starving for like. days. because i think that's a really good intro to his character and what's important to him but at least he still managed to eat the floor rice. like overall i think the changes were a good idea but they do give a different spin on him. (i think he accepted being freed too easily in this one. but. oh well.)

big fan of the alabasta foreshadowing. and zoro's opening scene. kind of ate ngl. cool to see things only offhandedly mentioned in the manga.

acting/writing. hm. i think some of the serious dialogue was a bit clunky and some bits the acting felt a bit...self conscious? sometimes luffy seemed a bit Too Self Aware/and not relaxed enough. during the sillier bits though i thought he did better and loosened up. same with zoro. no notes for nami though.

i was expecting to hate the rubber CGI but. did not mind it. fight scenes felt a bit silly but that's okay they are silly. (it is a plot point in the early manga that luffy fighting looks bizarre.)

fight scenes pretty decent, considering the medium change. three-sword style does just look flimsy live, unfortunately.

why is Garp here????????????????????

surprisingly faithful to all the important bits, honestly. we'll see where this goes. interested to see what they do with orange town now that the set-up has changed.

What do you think is the best Nightwing run? Some people say its Dixon's or Tomasi's run, but I don't know about that...

I feel like you were thinking of a nightwing run already here :P

Unless you just don't know about that because you're not very impressed with those two.

NGL for Nightwing runs, I think you'd want to say "the best for What". Like. Dixon's is good at establishing the city Nightwing is living in, but I'm not super impressed with most of his writing plot details, and he often tends towards stereotypes and racist or sexist tropes.

Tomasi's I think is the best for Dick's character, keeping in mind you're coming off of 3 writers who did not let Dick actually succeed in much it's a breath of fresh air to see Dick be competent and trying to get his head on straight again. But again that doesn't mean his run is free of issues, and the way he treats Mother of Champions is particularly dehumanizing.

Between Dixon and Tomasi you have Devin Grayson, who I think does poor characterization and racist tropes and sexist writing of female characters, then some dude who's name I can't remember but started his run impressing on the reader how much sex did have, to prove he's manly (but he wasn't so manly this writer actually let him succeed in things), then Wolfman who's normally decent for Dick but spent the whole time jerking off vigilante so Dick suffered for it.

I haven't read as much post new 52 Nightwing, so it's possible that one of those is the best :P I'm sure if I have a Dick follower they can say.

I did like Better than Batman and Nightwing Must Die in rebirth Nightwing, but it's been a long time since I've read those comics so I can't remember the characterization super well.

anyway obviously no run is going to be free of issues. i realize this makes it sound like i hate the nightwing series, but I don't. I've re-read it like. :P way too many times.

But if I was making a Nightwing Rec, I'd probably find out what the person wanted. Do they want an intro to Dick as Nightwing in Bludhaven? Do they want Dick being competent and doing cool stuff? But I'm curious what your opinion is, since you seem to have one in your ask :P

tarot and crystals (this is another passive hobby for me. i do not consistently practice tarot nor crystal meditation, however, if given the time and inspiration i will practice them. i wish i was more consistent, but i find these two to be moderately daunting)

I am currently pursuing an ASD diagnosis and am working with a clinic and insurance on finalizing testing, if anyone has gone through this process you know just how exhausting it is. I am diagnosed with ADHD. I believe these two things to be the driving forces in why i am the way i am and if not who i am. i strongly dislike statements such as "you are not your diagnosis" or "its just in your head." i am my diagnosis. it affects all aspects of my life. invalidating or denying that is invalidating me and ignoring a majority of my life and struggles. regardless, i may update here on how that whole process is going, tips i learn along the way, or further revelations that may occur during said process.

that being said i am a huge fidget toy enthusiast and am always looking for new fidget recommendations, i adore tangles, and these little edamame poppers, but id like to have more one-handed quiet fidgets.

some of my special interests are:

mental health and some disorders, i generally love learning how our brains work, both neurotypically and neuro-divergently

Okay so THOUGHTS. This was definitely the episode that felt most true to the actual gameplay and cutscenes. Like it was PACKED. But it didn't feel forced, and I really liked that. This miiiiiiight honestly be my new favourite episode. Seeing Joel becoming more and more vulnerable is really sweet, and really beautiful character development. I've been wanting more new music in the show, purely because Gustavo is such a brilliant composer, but I thought using 'The Path: a new beginning' after Joel and Ellie leave Jackson was extremely fitting.

I'm ngl, when I initially heard that all of the first game would be tackled in the first season, I was really worried about the pacing, because there's SO much happening in the game. I'm still curious about how they're gonna handle the rest of the episodes because there's still a decent amount of stuff to tackle, but I thought the pacing of this episode worked really well.

And I completely agree! Although I'm ngl, the results are way closer than I thought they'd be, people were pretty split on this for a four-way poll.

My personal rankings under the cut. Under the cut because (this is the part where my followers pretend to be shocked) this gets kinda long:

4th Place - The PPG Movie

This is frustrating because first 10 minutes or so and climax and ending are great! Lots of wholesome moments and awesome action. But middle is so dour. Too dour. There not much action either, outside of the tag scene. It doesn't fit the overall tone of the show. Powerpuff Girls is usually light-hearted, if a bit edgy. There are darker episodes like Speed Demon or Knock It Off, but those work and were memorable because they were rare.

Also the movie is kinda unnecessary, what do we really learn that isn't covered in the intro or episodes prior to the movie from the show itself? That Townsville used to hate the girls for being too destructive (and to a lesser extent for looking weird)? Which...uh....

This isn't rare. Stuff like this happens specifically because of the girls every other episode.

Prior to the movie you could've shrugged that off, but now that the movie confirmed that being too destructive is literally what caused the girls to become outcasts once before, you'd think the girls would try to be more careful than they are. I get that in a lot of cases (like the first two) the property damage isn't really their fault and was inevitable, but stuff like blowing up the Citysville bridge clearly establishes that they're used to being reckless consequence-free as if this has never caused them trouble in the past.

It's frustrating because the beginning and end of the movie are amazing, but the second act/middle of the movie just really brings it down for me, in addition to the premise (it being a retelling of an origin we already know) being kinda lame.

3rd Place - Wakko's Wish

Anyone who follows me for my Animaniacs content might've just went "WHAAAAAAAAAAAA-?"

Yeah I like Wakko's Wish, but would I say it's the best cartoon movie ever?

As an Animaniacs fan I'm so glad one of my favourite shows of all time got a movie, but the movie itself is...fine. I rank it above the PPG movie because it does a better job keeping consistent with the tone of the show and is a new story for the characters to star in rather than a retelling, but it still has some tonal issues. Weirdly enough, it almost has the opposite problem: It's a little too cheesy at points. I don't think they go too far with it, but I can't deny some scenes feel kinda...weird. I don't wanna say cringeworthy so I'll go with "weird".

Other than that, it's a decent flick! The songs are fun (though I think the show has done better), the animation is the best it's ever been for the franchise at that point, I wouldn't say it's hilarious but there's a lot in good gags in there. Although I feel some characters got pushed to the side in terms of plot relevance or are characterised weirdly (Yakko doesn't really do much, some characters like Katie Kaboom and her family have been demoted to background characters in this despite being co-stars in the show, Slappy could've been more violent here, the Goodfeathers don't show up until the movie's over halfway over, stuff like that).

Overall, it's good. Just...good.

2nd Place - The Spongebob Movie

I think I've seen this movie more times than I've seen any of the other three...combined.

It's a blast! It's tone is consistent with the show, it's just a little deeper with its messaging and and has higher stakes. It has great animation, the jokes don't stop coming and ALL of them land, and the movie has a legitimately good theme and arc for Spongebob! Yeah it's a funny talking sponge movie but there's honest to god themes of self acceptance, embracing your inner child, what it takes to be an adult, and kid empowerment.

I only have a few problems with it. 1, any character from the show who isn't Spongebob, Patrick or Plankton just DO NOT MATTER in this movie. The half the main cast and the majority of the recurring cast don't get to do squat. I get it, it's in the title, it's Spongebob's movie, but it's hard not to care, especially after later movies give the rest of the cast more to do. 2, the whole point of the movie is that Spongebob doesn't have to be traditionally manly to be capable, but...he's not capable. Not in this movie anyway.

Luck, luck, luck (although I guess you could argue him and Patrick letting themselves cry rather than holding it in just because they're men ended up saving their lives, so that was sort of their own doing...but come on, they didn't know that would happen).

Yes it's a comedy film and most of these were gags but the film can't try to have a theme and then barely do anything to prove that its message is true. The most Spongebob does by himself is getting through the trench in "Now That We're Men" (and even that was partially thanks to Mindy) and the Goofy Goober Rock scene, but more scenes should've been like those, Spongebob and Patrick getting out of situations in unconventional ways.

Oh, and (3) I guess Patrick having a crush on Mindy. Putting her supposed age aside (it's never actually mentioned in the movie, and the way I see is if it's not in official source material, it's not canon), it's kinda annoying the only female character who gets to do something significant just had to be a potential love interest. I guess it's for the sake of the innuendo of her "turning Spongebob and Patrick into men" but...eh. Kinda funny, kinda gross. Again, considering she's the only female character who does anything.

OK I just realised that I've written about the flaws of the movie for longer than I did its strengths, but don't let that fool you I really do love this movie. The comedy and heart of the film are so good I don't mind the flaws that much, but they do keep it from second place.

1st Place - Big Picture Show

Ed, Edd n Eddy is another one of my favourite shows of all time, and honestly a big reason for that is that, more than any cartoon I have ever seen, it stuck the landing.

The animation is top notch, unsurprising given that the show, specifically in the later seasons, already had some of the best hand drawn animation a cartoon series has ever had. It's energetic but handles slower moments brilliantly, the slapstick feels like it hurts, which makes it all the more funny. It can be fluid or snappy if need be. Characters squash and stretch and bend and sometimes break, and most of all they are expressive. The characters are always have incredibly unique and sincere expressions.

Now imagine all of that on a higher budget. Pictures won't do it justice, I suggest you at least watch a clip, you'll see what I mean.

The humour of course is great. I actually think the Spongebob movie has it beat in terms of comedy, but EEnE's typical snarky, slapstick, and wacky humour, as well as the visual gags, shine through here.

We either find out something new about many of the cast or they do something for the first time:

--Sarah has to use her brain rather than just her brawn after getting overpowered physically.

--Same with Ed! Except in this case what held him back from resorting to a physical confrontation was fear, not being overpowered. He uses his brain towards the end to beat Eddy's brother without having to touch him.

--Johnny is heavily implied to have social anxiety during the bus scene, which may explain why he drew Plank. He also becomes the new outcast by the end of the movie, but that makes sense. The show always implied if not for the Eds Johnny would've been the neighbourhood outcast instead.

--Nazz is revealed to have a crush on Kevin. She clearly liked him on the show, but it was never clear if that was just platonically or not.

--Kevin stands up for Eddy (and the rest of the kids, but other than Double D, who you would expect to anyway, he was the first).

--Lee is enraged by Eddy's brother bulling him, revealing Lee may genuinely like Eddy beyond tormenting him with kisses and the like. All the Kankers want to rescue to Eds from the rest of the kids in this movie, but this moment implies that wasn't just an excuse to stalk them again. This makes sense when you remember later seasons already implied her sisters, May and Marie, genuinely had romantic interest in Ed and Double D beyond infatuation.

Everyone in the cast gets a decent amount of screentime (although unfortunately Rolf isn't given much to do character or plot wise), which I appreciate, especially when comparing it to the Spongebob Movie or Wakko's Wish.

And like Wakko's Wish, there's a lot of call-backs to the show (Double D's labels, Captain Melonhead...honestly just go look at the wiki), in addition to the payoffs and reveals of things set up in the show. Except this time we know the events of the movie are actually happening to the characters, making it all the more impactful!

Then there's the big reveal of Eddy's brother, someone who the show acknowledged for multiple seasons but was never shown onscreen. ears of build up and slowly learning about him from how ither characters talk about him are paid off here, and he does not disappoint (writing-wise...personality-wise he sucks lol). His appearance here recontextualises a lot of episodes, now that we know Eddy was just trying to look cool to get people to like him whenever he brought him up, or tried to get other kids to fear his brother, and hence fear himself, in an attempt to gain respect because that's what he thought respect was. Yet in reality he feared his brother the most. Maybe it was also a way to lie to himself, to convince himself his brother wasn't that bad, as long as his brother wasn't around to disprove it.

As for Double D, he finally stands up for himself against Eddy, something Eddy had a long time coming, and once it looks like he might lose Double D for good, the usually arrogant, loud and rude Eddy...apologises. That and the ending where he drops the act and owns up about what he said about his brother all those times, it's a perfect explanation and end for Eddy as a character. Double D and Ed have good moments too! Ed did something smart (on his own) for once without it being played off as a joke and Double D grew a spine. Best of all the Eds finally get what they've always actually wanted: not jawbreakers, acceptance and respect.

A version of this show where the Eds aren't outcasts cannot exist. Ed Edd n Eddy (the show) is the mean-spirited yet humorous struggle of its titular characters. It is the way it is because the Eds just never learn their lesson...until they did.

But a show where the Eds are perfectly happy and popular just...isn't Ed Edd n Eddy. It can't be. It shouldn't be.

So the show ends. I appreciate when a show knows when end and doesn't overstay its welcome.

This not only is my favourite cartoon movie, but my favourite finale PERIOD. Of any show. 15 years later, and it is still one of Cartoon Network's greatest achievements. I mean that with full sincerity.

With a bigger budget and higher stakes, once a cartoon got one of these you know it made it big.
