Distribution of the dative case in Scandinavian dialects.
Similar to my earlier maps, feel free to ask questions! My sources are different books in .pdf form (mostly Ivar Aasen), personal experience, Swedish language sites and similar.
I know many of you wanted a map over "not", but that's hard and complicated! And I want to do it properly. (Dialects languages that have two forms are the main reason. Icke-Inte, Itt-Int, Ikkje-Inkje).

also speaking of latin in les mis this one's fun asdkjfhjsda
non licet omnibus adire Corinthum ("not everyone may get to Corinth") -> version (from at least the 17th century afaict, Hugo didn't invent it) of a line from Horace Epistles 1.17.36: non cuivis homini contingit adire Corinthum ("it doesn't come to pass that every man gets to Corinth") -- which then makes for a Really terrible pun here where omnibus, "everyone", also means literally the type of vehicle "an omnibus" and Corinthum rather than meaning "the city of Corinth" means. the wine shop the Corinthe. lmao.
#thoughts#les mis#ik 'omnibus' as in the vehicle comes from 'omnibus' the latin dative. but they've sufficiently diverged at this point it's still a pun#also sorry abt the translations reading awkwardly it's my bedtime#& i can't think of a natural way to do contingit without losing the whole construction

i alternate between more worldbuilding and more conlang heavy phases and whenever i enter back into a conlanging phase the autism just kicks into overdrive its all i can think about i already have so many ideas. i was thinking word order could start out as VSO. then S/O verb agreement evolves thru pronouns becoming suffixes. the subject now gets fronted, > SVO. one daughter language could then evolve topic marking, fronting the object when it's the topic, > OSV. now in sentences where the S is the topic the O retains its position before the verb, > SOV, the new default. maybe this change could also trigger prepositions to become postpositions. no idea how naturalistic this would be but its an idea
#and then if at an earlier stage some prepositions evolved into case prefixes#id have prefixes and postpositions.......nice#regarding case i was thinking: “at” would become accusative and locative#“to” dative and allative and alienable possession#“with” comitative and inalienable possession#and a topic marker could evolve from “for” maybe?#ramblings#oh GOD i just remembered verbs. shudder#not thinking about that yet#actually its not that bad

having busuu explain cases without actually explaining cases is kind of wild to me. like yes this is dative. this just makes sense to me, a person who speaks a heavily case-dependent language. however hearing it explained as "we are performing and receiving the action of looking into the mirror" is like. well i suppose this is correct yes but what a way to phrase it
#like i think this makes 100% sense i am not saying they should do it differently#especially when explaining it in english. while presuming that the person learning this is primarily an english speaker#but it's like. huh. yeah i suppose that is what it is. but to me it's just. sich anschauen. dativ. reflexivpronomen! been there done that#echo.txt#(also well i haven't touched busuu in like three months whoops. haven't been Actively Trying To Learn in ages)#(like i've still learned things but not via Doing Lessons i've just been. passively picking them up. you understand)#(read that fuga comic the other day and that taught me some new vocab. and also ordem now that i'm watching it again. and twitch chat)#but. well. figured i should get back to it maybe. can't hurt!#languageblogging

WIP Whenever
Was tagged a few times over the past week—thanks all. Been very busy, so only now able to give an update. Here's Reachtongue:
I re-did the inflections, because I wasn't entirely happy with the first versions. I could always re-do it a third time, but I'm happy for now.
Sound changes for final consonants and vowels, when they're inflected, is pretty common. I don't have a good list/example of all of them to really show, but it's usually either a form of palatalization or adding (or removing) voice (t to d and vice versa)
I've been really working on lexicon, which is also why I did that post with a language family tree mapped out on my whiteboard. I used that to figure out what other languages in TES to borrow from (after applying sound changes that I thought were COOL 😎😎😎) to have a cool thing ig. I'm trying to have the lexicon be good/interesting, ya dig?
Here's some examples:
All of these are WIP, not final, etc. I'm happy with a lot of them, some of them I'm just ok with (and will change if I think of better shit ig)
Here's some examples sentences:
that's all! going to go collapse now
#i like how doing these make up ssntences makes me want to change the accusative#everytime#maybe i just need to swap it with the dative#crynwrdrwg#reachtongue#tesblr#tes#the elder scrolls#lingblr#conlang

So there's this really cool thing Spanish does with pronouns. I'll try to explain (I'm no linguist, so feel free to correct me!).
Pronouns can be used as an accusative to mark the direct object of an action, as in "me bañe y me vestí" ("I showered and dressed myself"), or in "te beso" ("I kiss you"). Simple enough, right? It's your standard accusative personal pronouns.
But here's the thing. They can also be used as dative when the action concerns someone even though they may not be its direct object. For example, you can say "se rompió" ("it broke [itself]"), which is an accusative, but you can also add a dative and say "se me rompió" ("it broke [itself] [on me]"). You could very well imagine, then, a mother warning their children "¡Se me van a matar si siguen brincando así!" ("You're gonna kill yourself [on me] if you keep jumping up and down like that!"). You could even say, so as to mark a personal affection for the action's direct object, "no se me ponga a llorar" ("don't you start crying on me").
Alright. But you can take that a step forward. If your partner is looking particularly cute when going out, you could tell them "estás tan guapo que se te me van a robar" ("you're so cute they are gonna steal you from me").
