one of the things ive been doing as i replay rebirth is taking nice screenshots of enemy/monster designs because i feel like it can be hard to appreciate the work done on them while one is frantically trying to keep cloud and friends alive. however, the way the photo mode works is very frustrating because the camera's focal point is locked onto whichever character the player is running around with, making it very difficult to hone in on anyone who isnt that character. what i end up having to do is running behind whatever im trying to take a picture of and hit the photo mode button before it can turn around and then toggle the party visibility off if they're still in-frame. as annoying as it is to have to jump through hoops to get the shots I want, the results are often extremely funny.

a pause, then a sigh. he knew what she wanted ( leave shinra, stay here where it's a little safer, promise you won't have to betray me ). there was no way he hasn't already read her mind ( for all she knew, being in soldier allowed him to do that & more. a scary thought she set to the side to worry about later ), but she was aware that he couldn't provide that. it was too tall an order for him to fufill & one she was too afraid to ask, in fear of a harsh rejection. 

           he was only capable of doing so much. expecting him to give up everything that's become part of his daily routine & more, because she asked, was undeniably selfish. she let the question linger in the air a moment longer, thinking of what to put in its place. was there anything else that could suffice?

          if he could tell her the truth... tell her he was happiest with shinra than anywhere else & that whatever promise made under the stars meant nothing to him, she still wouldn't believe him — not even dare to entertain the idea of giving up. not until he would be able to say it without a hint of hesitation or remorse.

New faces were not at all an uncommon sight in the slums, a sea of bodies that ebbed and flowed with the tides of time and fortune, but Barret could see past that -- a sense of loss that enveloped more than simply being lost yourself. He couldn't help but pry, reach out his hand in help, feeling worried for a young woman so clearly out of her depth and seemingly alone, with no one to rely on.

Midgar attracted those that hoped for a better life for themselves, and he'd often be the unfortunate gatekeeper to show them just how unreachable that goal was… but she wasn't here in pursuit of glory or comfort.

She just had nowhere to go. He'd been there, once.

"There's a woman just down this path, name's Merle." He shifts the toddler resting against his chest, seated on a prosthetic arm as she slept, his voice low and understanding, as if not wanting to bring attention to their conversation or wake the young girl's nap. "Got a small motel going, rents out one of the few decent rooms in this sector." Here, his good arm is raised to point toward the general direction from the messy starting quarters of what would be the town guard.

"Tell her I sent you, and that I'm calling in a favor. If she doesn't have a room, she'll know who does. We'll figure out payment after, yeah? Can't be getting too worked up in these things without a cool head on your shoulders… besides, Merle could always use a little help. We take care of each other down here, ain't like Shinra's going to do shit for the people below the plate." The name of the company is spit with so much disdain that it almost sounds like a curse, and he has to gently bounce the child he was carrying to soothe her back to sleep, spooked by him raising his voice suddenly.

It still alarmed Zack to wake up in a bed. He wasn't used to such niceties in his day to day life anymore, finding that he was actually more acclimated to sleeping on the ground under a tree, or on the rocks in a cave. Months (years?) on the run from the world's most pervasive government would do that to a guy.

What alarmed Zack more was the fact that Cloud wasn't with him.

He did, after a minute, recognize where he was, at least. It was Tifa's bedroom in the back of the Seventh Heaven bar, where he was staying while he healed from the onslaught of bullets he had taken outside of Midgar. Tifa had been so kind as to help them out when Cloud had found her after dragging Zack into town.

Ugh. Cloud must have been in the main part of the bar, helping Tifa with the bar. He had overheard something that sounded like Cloud offering to help out in exchange for Tifa's help with Zack. What a pain.

Zack dragged himself out of bed and leaned on the wall as he made his way down the narrow hallway and into the bar, after taking a moment to run his fingers through his unruly hair. He needed to see Cloud; it had been a while, and being without his little buddy made him nervous, especially after hearing some of the stuff Cloud said.

Instead, he found something rather jarring.

The bar was full as ever, with people crowded around the tables to try Tifa's drinks and to try and win her heart, but no one was talking. All attention was on the little TV Tifa had in the corner of the bar, which was displaying a news story about –

A blown up reactor. Sector 8. Power outages and collapsed buildings. Missing people. Casualties.

A claim that it was AVALANCHE behind it.

Zack felt sick. He immediately flashed back to the moment he had seen his hometown of Gongaga crest over the hills a few months ago. The reactor was in ruins, and half the city completely destroyed. Dead vegetation and mutant monsters everywhere. AVALANCHE, they had said, sending a message.

“Tifa,” Zack said, voice on edge.

Tifa turned to look at him. Her ruby eyes were wide with worry and reluctance, and he understood immediately that Barret and the others were behind this. Of fucking course they were.

But there was still one thing wrong, here.

“Tifa,” he said again. “Where is Cloud?”

You get to go on a second "date" at the Saucer and I was pretty sure my highest friendship is with Tifa but there's a chance it's with Red instead but I was still so sure it'd end up being Tifa at the door and I was like LETS GO TIFA DATE NUMERO DOS but Cloud walks out there and it's the fuckin dog cifnfifnfofn okay that's fine! I'll go on a date with Red. I got the first one with Tifa and I do adore Red so might as well give him a chance.
