I was today years old. That is disgusting.
No Child Left Behind is one of the worst things to ever be incentivized in schools. It was signed into law when I was 14. Reading Rainbow was my show as a kid. LeVar Burton played a big part in why I became an avid reader to date. The joy of it. It's an adventure around the globe and through different time periods without stepping on a plane or time machine.
Children parrot behavior. In grade school, I always wanted to read the same amount of books as my teachers (50 books) and managed to double that each year. Before No Child Left Behind, book fairs and Scholastic catalogs were a serious matter like your grandma's Fingerhut catalogs. Libraries were (and still are) a wonderland.
Reading comprehension and proficiency in schools has been declining for decades. A crisis. The joy of books isn't pushed anymore and I'm always saddened by it. It's one of the reasons why I post my book reviews and recommendations on here, as well as posts from others to encourage reading and (novel) writing. Kids will parrot your behavior while the education system sadly fails to return as that example.

honestly my mother was a huge champ about her eight-year-old asking to be bought an unabridged edition of the Odyssey for a birthday present, and then she was an equally huge champ about reading her eight-year-old the unabridged Odyssey as a bedtime story and pausing every four lines to define something for me, and let me just say that I have fucking TREASURED the opportunity to reverse that old tradition by more or less forcing her to sit on my couch and listen to Epic and pause it every four lines for my dissertation
#epic the musical#classics#the odyssey#odysseus#look this is everything you need to know about me as a child#firm shoutout to my mother having handled this whole character arc with aplomb#i read percy jackson several years after this. to clarify. i was a little freak is what i am saying.#i also subjected my in-laws to my Odyssey Thoughts while they were here for christmas#to be honest i do not think they expected me to have a 20 minute speech locked and loaded#but again: they were great sports#incredibly convenient of my child self to have dubbed odysseus their blorbo because now i sound fantastically well educated#when in reality this is EXACTLY the same as me talking for 20 minutes about the animorphs#fuckin gottem

In 2017 these two ass-clowns told us the plandemic was coming. This is what happens when you think everything is good in your world if you just do what you're told.
NEWS FLASH‼️
The government, UN, the World Economic Forum, the lying media that feeds you your instructions and the puppetmasters that control everyone mentioned before don't give a damn about you.
The final battle is to save humanity and the future for the children! 🤔

When we think about the way our kids will grow up, we often focus on their academic success. We want them to be successful in school and go on to a great college or university. When we do this, though, we may be missing the whole point of child development: giving kids the opportunity to build their character.

Prompt 271
“Grandmother is visiting,” Damian suddenly said with no warning and with his usual not-quite demanding tone.
“Who?” Tim wasn’t the only one to startle, seeing as Bruce had practically froze, a downturn to his lips in a silent show of confusion.
Damian scowled. “Are you deaf Drake? Grandmother is coming to Gotham to, quote, make sure I am being properly cared for.” None of them had known that Ras was with anyone actually. At least Tim was pretty sure that would have been in the files.
“Oh?” Dick didn’t quite crouch to Damian’s height but it was a near thing. “She-” “He,” Damian corrected, interrupting him. They all exchanged a glance before Dick continued.
“Is he coming to the Manor or…”
Damian scoffed again, a tiny bit of a flush against his face. “No, Grandmother will most likely be staying with Akhi-”
Now wait one moment-
“YOU HAVE ANOTHER BROTHER?!”

This is maybe a kind of niche bit of nuance, BUT- you know how it's really fucked up when your boss at your job demands a doctors note if you call out sick?
*That's different* than *schools* asking for a doctors note when a kid is out sick. (I've seen many people online act as though they are essentially the same. And it's not.)
Children, by law, are required to attend school. Not just be registered, but actually go to school. Schools take attendance, not JUST because they are funded based on attendance, but because they are legally required to ensure that parents aren't withholding their kids from attending school.
If a kid reaches a threshold for absenteeism, truancy *laws* come into affect - and parents can be ordered to make a court appearance to explain why their kid isn't at school, to make sure they aren't being neglected or otherwise denied their legally entitled education. (Kids who are forced to work or stay home as care givers, or stay home until the bruises not covered up by clothes fade, or whatever other reason by their parents. The laws need to act as a safety net against the worst possibilities.)
And it would *suck* for that to happen just because a kid got strep throat or whatever.
But if parents can give the school documentation that the kid was ACTUALLY sick, and not being kept home for other reasons, then the school can put that in the file and not count those absences.
And it's OK if a kid has some unexcused absences! We know that. Kids get sick and not every cold requires a doctor. But schools ask every time so they can excuse any absences they legally are allowed to.
Schools ask for a doctors note so that can protect parents against truancy charges if that absentee threshold creeps up. And they need it to be documentation from outside the parents to ensure that parents arent lying so they can deny their kids access to school. (And access to the mandated reporters in that school)
Public schools are far from a perfect system, often underfunded and overcrowded, but they aren't demanding a doctors note for the same shitty reasons your manager at Walmart is.
#no idea what to tag#saw a tiktok and it made me see red for a moment#no maam the school doesnt feel entitled to your childs pressence your child is entitled to an education

How do Canadian schools teach about indigenous Canadian history and culture? -a curious USAmerican
In my experience we learned about colonization at the same time as we learned about the formation of Canada. At first it was "European settlers came and pushed out the indigenous population", then in the higher grades we learned more about the how and the why.
For example, how carts full of men with rifles would ride around shooting Buffalo, then leaving the meat on the ground to rot, because "a dead Buffalo is a dead indian", which was so fanatical it almost wiped out wild Buffalo entirely
Also how Canadian settlers were lured in with beautiful hand-painted advertisements for cheap, beautiful, fertile land that was unpopulated and perfect, if only you'd sail over with your entire family and a pocket full of seeds- only to be met with scared, confused, and angry lawful inhabitants already run out of ten other places, and frigid winters, and rocky, forested, undeveloped dirt.
also, smallpox blankets, where "gifts" of blankets infected with smallpox were intentionally given out
And treaty violations- Either ignoring written agreements entirely, or buying them out at insanely low prices and lying about the value, or trading for farming equipment that they couldn't use because they weren't farmers.
Then in the first world war, where they told indigenous peoples here that they'd be granted Canadian citizenship if they enlisted
To Residential schools, which was straight up stealing kids for slavery, indoctrination, and medical experiments
But we also covered the building of the Canadian Railway in which Chinese immigrants were lowered into ravines with dynamite to blow out paths through the mountain for pennies on the dollar
And the Alberta Sterilization Act, where it was lawful and routine procedure to sterilize women of colour and neurodivergent people without their awareness or consent after giving birth or undergoing unrelated surgeries
But I'm rambling.
We kind of learned Aboriginal history at the same time as everything else? Like. This is when Canada was made, and this is how it was done. Now we'll read a book about someone who lived through it, and we'll write a book report. And now a documentary, and now a paper about the documentary. Onto the next unit.
And starting I think in grade 10 our English track was split between English and Aboriginals English, where you could choose to do the standard curriculum or do the same basic knowledge stuff with a focus on Aboriginal perspectives and literature. (I did that one, we read Three Day's Road and Diary Of A Part-Time Indian, and a few other titles I don't remember.)
There was also a lunch room for the Aboriginal Culture Studies where Aboriginal kids could hang out at lunch time if they wanted, full of art and projects and stuff. They'd play music or videos sometimes, that was cool
And one elective I took (not mandatory cirriculum) was a Kwakiutl course for basic Kwakwakaʼwakw language. Greetings, counting to a hundred, learning the modified alphabet, animals, etc. Still comes in handy sometimes at large gatherings cause they usually start with a land recognition thanking whoever's land we're on, with a few thanks and welcomes in their language.
And like- when I was in the US it was so weird, cause here we have Totem poles and longhouses and murals all over and yall... don't? Like there is a very distinct lack of Aboriginal art in your public spaces, at least in the areas I've been
My ex-stepfather, who was American, brought his son out once, and he was so excited to "see real indians" and was legitimately shocked to learn that there weren't many teepees to be found on the northwest coast, and was even *more* shocked when we told him that you have Aboriginal people back home too, bud. Your Aboriginal people are also named "Mike" snd "Vicky" and work as assistant manager at best buy.
If you'd ask me, I'd say that the primary difference is that USAmerica (from what I've seen, and ALSO in entirely too much of Canada) treats our European and Aboriginal conflicts as history, something that's tragic but over, like the extinction of the mammoths, instead of like. An ongoing thing involving people who are alive and numerous and right fucking here
But at the end of the day, I'm white, and there are plenty of actual Aboriginal people who are speaking out and saying much more meaningful things than I can
So I'm just gonna pass on a quote from my Stepmum, who's Cree, that's stuck with me since she said it:
"You see how they treat Mexicans in America? That's how they treat us here. Indians are the Mexicans of Canada."

personal take on fem tsukasa
#no the white bow is not part of my vision...... my apologies#if i was more tsukasa literate id think more about how being a girl would change her character and how the people around her react to her#like. instead of 'oh shes surprisingly caring' maybe more like 'oh shes surprisingly disruptive as fuck' because of hashtag society#and hashtag gender roles and whatever#but like i said. not really that well versed on everything he has going on so im just gonna leave it at the design#ann art#prsk#pjsk#tsukasa tenma#femkasa#prsk fa#So stupid looking in every universe god bless#IG WHAT I MEAN IS being a role model of an older sibling and being responsible i feel are traits more expected in girls. so it wouldnt rly#be 'unusual' or unexpected of her to be like that. i think. idk.#among other things probably. like realistically a lot of her personality would be changed but ASSUMING its identical to the original.. what#sequence of events/reactions/perceptions would have to have happened to get there. yknow. maybe.#education major in several child psych/development courses in ur area ! my bad

hi i was raised in a home daycare for over 20 years and studied child development and psychology in school for 3 and would like to gush about why i love how bonnie was written and how they're one of the few kids in games i've played that Actually Feel Like a Kid:
firstly: bonnie's diction
bonnie cursing like a sailor is honestly pretty accurate for a kid aged like 9-14 and i distinctly remember having a huge cursing phase of my own at that age too so LMAO
they ask a lot of questions adjacent to a kids' understanding/confusion of things, social norms, situations, feelings, etc. (the conversation about the actors kissing in that play they saw and how they MUST have had an invisible paper between their lips because nobody would REALLY kiss on stage in front of everybody!)
they can be incredibly blunt but often not with the intention to hurt feelings rather than genuinely acquire information (sometimes with some sass b/c of previous conditioning.) ex. "Our teacher always tells us we have to speak up more... You're an adult so why don't you speak up more?" (Precedent/Conditioning; "Adult in position of power and authority has ingrained it is important to use my voice." -> "Why don't you, an adult who should know better, use yours more then?")
they have a tendency to confidently and casually use words and phrases they don't fully understand or know ("Air-no-no-nomic" -> this especially being something picked up by a fellow kid and just trusted that) (struggling to say, "pomegranate" (very cute watching odile help them with it :,) ) (struggling to say onigiri -> purposely messing this up to get a playful reaction out of dile, a party member they're especially close to, was also very sweet)
it's hard to discuss feelings. they're more likely to use a vessel as a means of connecting to someone else before being able to assign words to everything (offering a peach to siffrin in the classroom because they recognize he's upset without fully understanding why, then waiting for him to address the situation)
secondly: how bonnie handles feelings towards the others and about their Scenario
tendency to hold onto hard, serious, difficult-to-breach subjects and then explode and scream when addressed (ex. Rotten Adults quest)
slightly more partial to physical touch than verbal affirmation (hugs, hugs, hugs! including the little half-hugs they do where they just run into siffrin's side...)
jabbing siffrin in the stomach as a show of example for touching them LMAO???
recounting stories and information that interests them without regard for how socially appropriate it is or why others may react poorly (ex. talking to the party about how nille ran away with them and why she did)
unspoken guilt and trauma causing disconnection from people they love (siffrin's eye situation)
just a few examples and thoughts i liked
#im not an education major but i would be if i didnt love art#all of my psychology and child development studies are purely elective/voluntary#kids are too wonderful man#too funny#too adorable#isat spoilers#in stars and time spoilers#isat#in stars and time#bonnie#bonnie isat#isat bonnie

"Three years ago, Araba Maze was reading a book to her niece on the front stoop of her Baltimore home in a perfectly ordinary fashion.
But as the pages turned, the number of local children gathered around for “stoop storytime” increased until Maze had to take notice. ‘What are they doing?’ she thought.
When she had finished reading to them, they asked her to read another. “Go home and read,” she said. “We don’t have any books,” they replied.
Little did she know, but those fateful minutes of reading time launched Maze’s career as a librarian and influencer who champions a cause of getting books into the hands of urban children with no access to libraries.
Now known as Storybook Maze, she started work at the nearest library, which wasn’t that near since her neighborhood is one of the worst ‘book deserts’ in Baltimore. Using her training, she began to curate collections of books and get them into the hands of children using three creative methods.
The first is a free book vending machine. Using her extreme popularity on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, she gathered funds to install a book vending machine for kids on the street in 2023. Through her efforts in opening pop-up bookstores, she’s distributed over 7,000 books to children.
Throughout the process, she routinely hosted more ‘stoop storytimes’ where she would read to children throughout the city, driving publicity through her social media channels.
Now, Storybook Maze is attempting her largest project yet—a book trolley. With the goal of raising $100,000 on GoFundMe, she hopes to have a colorful children’s train that will toot-toot its way through the book deserts of Baltimore, providing as many books as can fit in the carriage cars.
“This book haven on wheels aims to break down barriers and provide access to books that traditional libraries can’t reach,” Maze writes. “As the wheels of the Book Trolley turn, so do the pages of countless stories waiting to be discovered.”"
