I’ve never been a fan of bad faith reinterpretations of fairy tales, especially ones which flatten the originals into “princesses is saved by a prince and nothing else”, to then go #girlboss. Agatha Heterodyne:

The main character mad scientist in a comic full of them

She's the titular Girl Genius, which is a good start. In the comic, mad science is genetic and called the Spark; she's the latest in a long line of of powerful, mostly evil Sparks who terrorized Europa for centuries, until her father and uncle became heroes instead. She's a bit in between the two extremes. Some of her greatest hits include: building a small army of self-replicating robots, briefly killing one of her romantic interests in order to cure him of a terminal illness (he thought it was a brilliant idea), repeating the procedure on herself, nearly blowing up after glimpsing the fabric of the universe, repairing the sentient castle at the heart of her town, frequently having to shuffle around brains that end up in the wrong body (they are usually happier afterwards), building a giant robot in order to ask the Godqueen of England to dance, and making coffee. At this time in the comic, she recently rescued her town from being frozen in time and is working to kill a horror from another dimension.

GLaDOS:

I LOVE GLaDOS. Such a well written and funny and interesting character. And Portal 2 is one of the best games of all time. If you haven't played it, go do that.

About 31,000 years ago, a skilled prehistoric surgeon cut off the lower leg of a child hunter-gatherer in Borneo. Now, archaeologists have concluded that this ancient surgery is the earliest medical amputation on record.

The skill of the Stone Age surgeon was admirable; the patient went on to live an additional six to nine years after the surgery, a radiocarbon dating performed by researchers of the individual’s tooth enamel revealed, according to a study published online Wednesday (Sept. 7) in the journal Nature.

I have come to admit that my own toxic trait is that i DO hold a quiet disdain for people who think that putting flatpack furniture together is hard. Why is IKEA furniture in particular regarded as some Ultimate Test for Couples - "If you build it without killing each other, he's the one, haha!" ???? Like, listen, I get it, i've got a fuck'd wrist nowadays so I DO find that hammering peg A into slot B is considerably more difficult than it used to be, but the task ITSELF? It's like building lego, y'all. Except that at the end of it, you end up with not just some sort of miniature spaceship (admittedly very cool, if not particularly useful) but a functional and stylish side table. It's the perfect enrichment. I smashed together three Billy bookcases last summer with nothing but a screwdriver, a pencil, and the love in my heart, and I had the time of my life. Do you, too, not feel a thrill in your heart at the satisfying feeling of a cam lock twisting into place? Do not the tiny little crinkly bags of screws remind you of candy wrappers to be torn open and piled gleefully upon the floor, like a child at Halloween emptying your haul onto the living room carpet? im gonna be honest gang i really don't care if a 16 year old sees porn. i think the circumstances & context around your first interaction with sexuality is a lot more important in whether or not it will be traumatizing in some way than the sex itself. like i think the first time i ever looked up porn i was 12? which is a very normal age as well. and i was also on tumblr where i saw a lot of people saying "hey porn isn't realistic" so when i watched porn i was like hmm interesting, maybe hot, but i's not good advice. and that was that. watching porn didn't lead me to engage with any adults, it didn't make me upset, all it did was help me visualize things and later explore my own sexuality. and im not saying there's no rules i couldn't get behind regarding minors and sexual content because we do have these concepts for good reasons. but i keep seeing people be like well OBVIOUSLY we should keep minors from watching porn! and im just like idk! do we really need to be majorly concerned with preventing teens from accessing porn as much as we need to make sure there is bountiful, educated and compassionate sex ed, workers rights for sex workers, and awareness around abuse? maybe the solution is better positive than negative

Just made myself so so sad thinking about Aang's marble trick because from a physics perspective, keeping dense spherical objects afloat on an airstream is not trivial, and he's doing it in a tiny little space without moving his hands. Bending is usually very gestural. So. Everyone in the era of the show is, at best, impressed THAT it is airbending. But Aang's an incredibly young master airbender. He wouldn't be acting like this was the bestest trick ever if it didn't take at least some skill; he's a goofy kid but he's also a prodigy. I bet other airbenders were absolutely blown away (pun fully intended) at the level of precision and force and minimalism of movement on display and now there's no one who understands at all why he expects accolades.
