MY SONG OF THE WEEK: “Night Garden” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/night-garden-featuring-mike-garson-beyondo I was playing cruise ship gigs and a bass line kept flowing out of me. Every time I played this groove, musicians would start jamming, people would start dancing… It turned into this psychedelic Cuban-jazzified pop song. Latin and Caribbean music is animated and easeful to me, rhythmically and harmonically, making me feel I’m moving with confidence no matter what’s going on in the world. My lyrics were inspired after reading an airline magazine article by Lee May, a journalist from Atlanta who was passionate about gardening. His wonderful words about “plant life that blooms at only night” left an impression. As to the lyrics, Donald Fagen says he chooses words because they suit the shape of his mouth and the lure of a melody—words flow and find their own meaning. That was my approach: Like winding tendrils, words and melody twined into “a song novelette” about a pair of lovers heading south of the border, on the lam because of an unspecified crime.

The music bed was recorded in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Williamsport PA (final mix by Xavier Francis). It features the brilliant drum/trumpet/co-production work of Eric Biondo (a.k.a. Beyondo) + magnificent piano by Mike Garson, a composer-artist in his own right but also known as David Bowie’s longtime keyboardist.

Note
I’m not the anon who asked the question about Bowie- but I’m honestly shocked you never heard of him.
I’ve always thought you were a fan lololol. You give off the vibe. His music is really different and is so comforting as a neurodivergent autistic person. He’s unlike any other musician.
If you do want to listen to his songs, I recommend “Space Oddity,” “Life on Mars,” “Let’s Dance,” “Starman” and “Heroes.” Those are all some of his most famous songs but they’re worth the hype. “Heroes” could actually work pretty well for Lams.
There is no coherent pattern to my taste in music, if it subjectively sounds good to me then I'll like it. And oftentimes it strands into a wide variety of genres.
Anyway, I'll definitely take a listen!

'Farley Granger and Cathy O’Donnell in They Live by Night (Nicholas Ray, 1948)
Cast: Cathy O’Donnell, Farley Granger, Howard Da Silva, Jay C. Flippen, Helen Craig, Will Wright, William Phipps, Ian Wolfe, Harry Harvey. Screenplay: Charles Schnee, NIcholas Ray, based on a novel by Edward Anderson. Cinematography: George E. Diskant. Art direction: Albert S. D’Agostino, Alfred Herman. Film editing: Sherman Todd. Music: Leigh Harline.
Though usually remembered as a precursor of another, more celebrated lovers-on-the-lam movie, Bonnie and Clyde (Arthur Penn, 1967), They Live by Night stands on its own, largely because of novice director Nicholas Ray's attention to characterization and detail. This is a film with texture, rising above its melodramatic core by constantly introducing peripheral detail. Instead of opening, as a conventional movie might have, with a dramatization of the prison break by Bowie (Farley Granger), Chickamaw (Howard Da Silva), and T-Dub (Jay C. Flippen), it begins with an aerial shot of the stolen car speeding across the landscape -- a daring early use of what has become routine in filmmaking, namely, a helicopter shot. Ray continues to fill his frames with the unexpected: As Bowie hides behind a billboard, waiting for Chickamaw and T-Dub to return with another car, a small dog appears and hangs around the young fugitive. Later, when Bowie and Keechie (Cathy O'Donnell) begin their flight on a Greyhound bus, Bowie is seated beside a woman who is determined to ignore her crying, squirming baby, leaving Bowie to try to quiet the infant. Neither dog nor baby is essential to the scene, but by their very presence they lend a quality of innocence to the boyish fugitive. Bowie and Keechie decide on the spur of the moment to get married in a quickie ceremony conducted by an anything-for-a-buck justice of the peace (Ian Wolfe), who calls on his standby witnesses. After the perfunctory ceremony, the woman witness hugs Keechie, but the male witness declines because he has a cold. Again, the witness's cold is irrelevant to the plot, but it serves to add a subtle note of disorder to the scene, a hint that Bowie and Keechie will always be subject to forces as far beyond their control as the common cold. I don't know whether dog and baby and cold were present in the novel by Edward Anderson, Thieves Like Us, on which the film is based, or if they were introduced in Charles Schnee's screenplay or in Ray's revisions of it, but the fact that they were either introduced or retained in the film speaks volumes on the kind of director Ray was: one attentive to the contingencies that bring a film to life. Granger and O'Donnell are incredibly touching in their performances, and the rest of the cast rise about the stereotypes they could easily have become. Anderson's novel was filmed again, under its original title, by Robert Altman in 1974, and I remember liking that movie. But unless another viewing of Altman's version changes my mind, I think They Live by Night is better.

Unique English Hong Konger Names
Tumblr media
As a result of British colonization, most Hong Kongers have English names along side their Chinese names. However, since Hong Kong is not exactly an English speaking society, some of the names that parents choose for their children (or they choose themselves) may have unconventional spelling, sound like they're not "real names", or generally appear unusual to native English speakers. Which I find interesting because they follow "English name structures" without actually being English names.
Here are some examples I found as I was scrolling through the list of Miss Hong Kong Pageant winners, given in the format of [English name] - [traditional] / [simplified] ([jyutping] / [pinyin]) - jyutping is one of the most common ways of romanizing Cantonese (the language of Hong Kong) and pinyin is the standardized form of romanizing Mandarin. More under the cut!
Conny Kwan - 關淑芬 / 关淑芬 (gwaan1 suk6 fan1 / Guān Shūfēn)

I thought this was really fun. It's sort of lke this new trend of Americans stuffing in extra letters to common names, like turning "Jessica" into "Jessieighkah." They almost sound AI generated. List of pageants is from here and I couldn't find a single solid source about Hong Kong names so here's 1, 2 and 3!

TRUE FAITH ACTIVATED
Tumblr media
YOOOOOOOOOOO
Status of other things: Lam runs the bookstore (basically on his own. I WANT to, but the game keeps dragging the PC to do vampire things in the vampire game). Jace rents the spare bedroom for cheap, and I'm hoping he will protect the place from Perry. Agreed to do some 🎵 light blood trafficking 🎵 for $7k per month. PC found a vial of blood in Bowie's car. I think he was a frenzied ghoul? Went to the library, asked Salem out on a date, and found a book written by a bonefide hunter (!!!!!). Met the feral indie folk duskborn coterie, told them I would help if they returned Tyler's body, told the Brigade the full truth and it stressed them the fuck out lol
Tumblr media
I honestly don't know what to do about these duskborn. Jace and Eric seem great. Monroe is ??? Perry and Kyra are such a danger to themselves and others. If some Sabbat pack could blow through town on the way to Chicago and pick these kiddos up, that would be great.
On another note, Succubus Club shout out!!!
Tumblr media
I understood that reference!
Last, Lacey said the most relatable thing about chronic illness:

My brain is abuzz and I definitely, 100%, do not know how this is going to turn out.
Guess who is playing Out for Blood !!!!!!!
Highlights from the first three chapters:
Going in, I knew I wanted to play a character with True Faith. The first chapter gave the option to devote oneself to Islam, Christianity, or Judaism. I wasn't sure if Christianity meant Protestant or Catholic, playing Protestant would make my brain melt, I have Jewish family members, and I really loved reading When the Angels Left the Old Country last month so...Jewish PC it is! So far I'm really enjoying the experience and have fun little research asides when the game references something.
This PC is also a nonbinary lesbian person who had a childhood crush on Salem. Eir grandfather, Aviv, ran Chapter Eleven bookstore. Which is quite the ominous name, but we'll see how it goes.
This game seems slower paced than Night Road, but lots of elements could pick up later. I had two favorite moments.
Chastain having a tantrum after she fails to Dominate the PC:
Tumblr media
Girl, those are what we call inside thoughts. 😂
My friends and I have had that exact reaction when our powers don't work. We usually complain out of character though! 😂😂😂
At the dinner party, the PC hugged Marcus, and this hug description wow:
Tumblr media
My heart melted! And then got a deathly chill at the immediate [Willpower -1] notification! Ahhhh, is Marcus one of the baddies?? Nooooooooooooooooo
