God this last bit is going to be such a slog
Spoilers and incoherent thoughts under the cut
I think I'm not the biggest fan of this genre. It requires too much suspension of disbelief on a large scale that to me doesn't feel particularly realistic (namely how quickly attitudes change among the older generations), while also understanding that this is not the point. The point is to argue against the annoying rhetoric you'll see where it's "Well if society was run by a woman it would be better" which is very untrue. And the violence here isn't sensational (as i saw someone on goodreads argue), it's not man-hating, it feels grounded in what it's trying to say.
But I feel like with all these characters the message is getting fumbled a bit? Idk. It reeks of "a white British lady probably white femnist" wrote this (and I say this as a white American lady.)
Idk the specific scene that annoyed me was when Tunde discovered that Nina basically wrote his book and gave him no credit and we as an audience were probably supposed to feel shocked or be like, "yup this is just what happens to women flipped on it's head." But all I saw was, "Wow a woman from the global north is taming advantage of a man from the historic global south. Shocking."
Ugh idk. I'm only reading this for a boom club and I hope I can find a review or something that captures the ick I'm feeling better than I can write it out.
(At least Margo and Roxie are interesting.)

I’ve been treating my journal like a podcast where I just keep rambling while doing things that give me anxiety. Getting the anxieties out right away and feels like I have some emotional support there even tho it’s just me & my journal. Sure it takes a bit longer bc u’re basically doing 2 things, but at least something’s getting done u know?
#got that idea from my fave podcast where he was doing that podcast while packing etc bc he didn’t want to back so helped to have#another side project there so u’re not just doing the thing u don’t want to do#and like I don’t and will never have a podcast bc ew can not talk for thr life of me so journaling is it for me#bookblr#studyblr#booklr#aesthetic#study#books#reading#read#book#studyspo#dark academia#chaotic academia#august 2023#2023

What good things are happening for you in August?
Pick a pile/picture
Pile 1:
Support: You will be receiving support. Only you know what kind of support you need and are seeking. This may be emotional support, financial support, advice, family support, friends, etc. But this month you will be receiving that helping hand from others.
Pile 2:
Adult Children & Take the next step now: I feel this means you will be taking the next steps in your adult life and dealing with childhood issues. You will begin to blossom from the past. For some with adult children, this means you will be advancing your relationship with them and getting closer.
Pile 3:
Hobbies: You will be diving more into your hobbies. Or you may be discovering and trying new hobbies. I feel your hobbies and passions will take off and bring you a lot of joy this month. You may even find a way to profit or make a job out of a hobby.

figured i'd do this again..bit early i guess..
#to cheer me up.. i feel bad atm.. these things don't even make me feel very good tho bc i'm such a narrative/sketch-based artist..#but Proper Beautiful Finished Pieces are what grab attention and look good at the end of the year all neatly lined up lol.....#so looking at a “yearly review” where i can only choose 'the best image of the month' (??) is like...What have i even been doing...#i did a month by month look back on twt for myself instead..but even that doesn't express the quantity of comic-based stuff..#that i do put a lot of time/heart into..but alas i feel bad bringing even them back..RTing/reblogging my own art simply feels bad lol..#AND WHY IS IT ALL B&W...trying to accept that i LIKE doing that and sketching and scribbling..not like i'm trying to like..Get Artist Job..#this year was so profoundly lonely at times bc i spent all my time drawing instead of socialising and trying to find friends....#please please please have achieved more of your dreams in the future so you can look back at 2023 and think..#It was good that happened so that it got me further to the future. Or whatever i guess.....................#regardless i did have a great amount of fun drawing and improving this year and dwelling deeply & heavily on witch hat atelier.#art-wise and emotionally....march july & september were the best months i think..AUGUST WAS SO WEIRD SUMMER IS SO EVIL ALWAYS.#thank you very much if you are reading this for enjoying & leaving nice tags & such like <3 i've realised how fulfilling that is to receive#really keeps me posting stuff here instead of keeping it all to myself in my head#i wish everyone in this world could have a safe and happy end of year. i wish living in this world were easier

sleepy and v fed up w this blasted reading for japanese history class tomorrow. give me 45 minutes to finish this article and i will be back to talk about kissing or something
#for the blissfully uninitiated: hello i am history student#which is a fantastic thing to be but also a significant pain in the [REDACTED] when it wants to be#the professor for this class is almost unbearably terrible which does not exactly make me WANT to do this reading#but the exam is in like 2 weeks lol#so yk. i have the hardest life of anyone on earth etc etc#god forbid i actually do the degree i asked to do lmao#also i up early this morning to drag myself to the immigration bureau for a visa amendment#which meant a decidedly unpleasant hour on the metro during rush hour :(#its bc im applying for this english TA position in spring#its literally only for 5 days and tbh i wouldn't mind doing it for free bc i am sad like that and enjoy teaching for fun#but it IS paid - and paid work is Not Allowed under my student visa#so even though i literally have not even GOT the job (applications close today) i still had to go and apply for permission to work#watch as they dont hire me lol#oh i should mention - for those who may not know i am in tokyo this year#i am british and i usually go to uni in the uk but im on a study abroad year this year#i came to japan in sept of 2023 so ive been here for coming up on 5 months and i will be going back home in august on 2024#its weird to think that im approaching the halfway point#tbh i should really just make this a separate post but whatever#coming to japan has been very strange but a good thing i think

The first book of the year was The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August. And I wonder what made me go back to this story again. I think there's some melancholy in the shared sense among the characters that they can't and shouldn't change. They have to relive their lives, and even though they pursue different things, they continue the same, and the world keeps the same. And this is one of the main conflicts in the love-hate relationship between the main characters. And I have to confess that I'm a bit obsessed with whatever Harry and Vincent have for each other.
It was a great reread to start the year!
