okay i literally just finished it and my first thought is: i always swore that if suzanne collins ever decided to retouch post trilogy timeline, i would think its a horrible idea and would not honor it. i would feel she sold out.

i will eat my words bc the simplicity and kindness of the epilogue in SotR is exactly what i needed from this book. the reader spends the whole time aching for haymitch, knowing exactly what happens to everyone he loves back in 12, just waiting to see exactly when and how it happens, and praying for him to have a little more time with them. and every part of the book is as unforgiving as it has to be. then knowing through the books how long haymitch has to wait to see another (his best friends daughter, so like his sweetheart) get the chance to stop the sun rise on the reaping - it. hurts. - and i had fully expected, given how BoSaS ended abruptly, to find the same ending here.

luckily, i had underestimated the compassion collins gives to characters that deserve it. the brief glimpse at the time post book three (before the end of the trilogy in the meadow with kids we assume) seeing haymitch have a family again, it brought so much peace into the story. and to have it be his best friends daughter, and let haymitch see the other side, i appreciate collins for that.

snow did not deserve to have that peace. snow never had that peace. snow never deserves to have that peace. he deserves to choke on his own blood. :)

i have so many other thoughts on the book, good points and connections to present day and impactful takeaways on propaganda, the fact that i think she wrote this book partially to make sure everyone who tried to say snow wasn’t evil or that he was hot so it didn’t matter would properly understand how atrocious he is, and everything else.

but tonight (at 12:10 am) all i can think about is how glad i am that suzanne collins gave us this epilogue. thank u for letting us see haymitch be at peace once more.

don't be afraid to put down a book that isn't working for you. don't hesitate to hit the pause button, to set it aside for another day, or to abandon it altogether. not every story was written for you. not every writer's prose will successfully capture your attention. that's okay. don't waste time on a book that fails to excite or enamor you. move on to something better.
