As once-in-century hurricane heads for Florida, major media is silent about Trump's disaster relief lies
Hurricane Milton threatens to hit Florida on Wednesday as a once-in-century storm. FEMA and the National Guard are already stretched thin in their response to Hurricane Helene. And Trump continues to spew his disinformation about their response in North Carolina—creating an aura of distrust and the potential for vigilante violence by misguided storm victims who believe Trump's lies about the disaster relief.
The good news is that many responsible Republican elected officials have criticized or condemned Trump's lies. The bad news is that the criticism hasn’t stopped Trump. He as at it again on Monday. See The Guardian, Fema chief warns ‘dangerous’ Trump falsehoods hampering Helene response.
While the major media outlets are rightfully focused on the potential damage from Hurricane Milton, they have already lost interest in Trump's disinformation campaign. It has disappeared from their platforms—even though Trump has not relented. His lies continue unabated.
Never before and never again in the history of our Republic will we witness a presidential candidate leverage the lives and safety of victims of natural disasters into pawns in a campaign. Kamala Harris condemned Trump's statements on Monday—and the major media yawned (except for The Guardian). Harris said, in part,
People are in desperate need of support right now and playing political games at this moment, in these crisis situations – these are the height of emergency situations – it is utterly irresponsible and it is selfish and it is about political gamesmanship instead of doing the job that you took an oath to do, which is to put the people first.”
And I cannot stress enough to all the folks in Florida in the Tampa area, please listen to evacuation orders. Please listen to your local officials because I know a lot of folks out there have survived these hurricanes before; this one is going to be very, very serious and I urge you to grab whatever you need. The other point I’d make is there’s a lot of misinformation being pushed out there by the former president about what is available, particularly for the survivors of Helene. First of all, it’s extraordinarily irresponsible. It’s about him, it’s not about you. The reality is Fema has so many resources that are available to those who desperately need them.”
Trump is subordinating the lives and safety of hundreds of thousands of Americans to his partisan political interest. That is a scandal unmatched in American history—and it is missing from the front pages and websites of nearly every major news source. Shameful!
Florida threatens local news stations with jail time for running political ads supporting ballot initiative
If you want a view into what a second Trump presidency would look like, check out Florida. Governor Ron DeSantis has threatened to prosecute local news stations for running political ads in support of the ballot initiative to protect reproductive rights in Florida. The threats are plainly unconstitutional, but the fact that the state is threatening jail time for political speech is beyond the pale. Let’s hope that all Floridians are outraged by this abuse of power and government overreach—and motivated to turn out in massive numbers on November 5. See Talking Points Memo, DeSantis Threatening Jail Time for Running Abortion Rights Ads in Florida.
Again, the fact that the major media has not come down on DeSantis like a ton of bricks bespeaks an inexplicable quiescence in the face of an onrushing fascist threat.

Ben Metzner at TNR:
Georgia’s former Republican Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan announced Monday that he is endorsing Joe Biden in the 2024 election, a stunning defection that puts him at odds with other leaders in his party. Countless Republicans who have been personally slighted by Donald Trump, from William Barr to Ted Cruz, have nonetheless pledged their support to him in the upcoming election. But Duncan has drawn a line in the sand. The former Georgia official faced pressure from the Trump campaign to stop the certification of 2020 election results in the crucial swing state.
“The healing of the Republican Party cannot begin with Trump as president (and that’s aside from the untold damage that potentially awaits our country),” Duncan wrote in an op-ed for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “This November, I am voting for a decent person I disagree with on policy over a criminal defendant without a moral compass.” Despite conservatives’ insistence to the contrary, Trump’s legal troubles are convincing some Republican voters to jump ship ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Duncan, for his part, cited Trump’s criminal case directly: “The alternative is another term of Trump, a man who has disqualified himself through his conduct and his character. The headlines are ablaze with his hush-money trial over allegations of improper record-keeping for payments to conceal an affair with an adult-film star,” he wrote.
Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan (R) wrote an op-ed in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he'll endorse Joe Biden in the general elections despite many policy differences between the two.

From this article:
“ ‘As the largest newspaper in the South, we’ve got an active audience in a part of the country that is at the center of a lot of important stories,’ Mr. Morse said. ‘I think we have the ability to be an essential source of news, not just for Atlanta, but for the South.’
“Mr. Morse, 48, joins The Atlanta Journal-Constitution amid a crisis in local news. More than 2,500 newspapers across the United States have closed over the last two decades, as revenue from print advertising dwindles, leaving one-fifth of Americans with limited access to local news.”

This is a developing news story and may be updated as more information is obtained. If you value such information, please support this Substack.
On Dec. 1, a woman immolated herself with a Palestinian flag outside the Israeli consulate in Atlanta.
Now, according to the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, the woman — referred to in their report as “Jane Doe” — is alive and “in stable condition” at Grady Memorial Hospital, where she has been since the immolation.
After repeated requests for her name, the department stated to this reporter in an email that it “does not disclose the identities of victims”. Repeated inquiries to Grady, which is a public hospital, went unanswered. The hospital houses the Walter L. Ingram Burn Center.
“Jane Doe” is 27.
When asked if they had made any comment to tell the public that she was still alive this entire time, the official at Atlanta Fire Rescue Department said they “shared the last updated with local media via email on 12/21/23. The release stated: ‘The victim remains hospitalized in critical condition. The security guard, who attempted to assist the burn victim, has been released from the hospital.’” Several internet searches on that quote produce no results. This would also indicate that "Jane Doe" went from critical to stable condition without public notice.
Aaron Bushnell immolated himself at the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, explaining “I will no longer be complicit in genocide” and shouting “Free Palestine!” repeatedly as he burned alive. So, his case — unlike many other self-immolations including Gregory Levey, Raymond Moules, Timothy T. Brown, Malachi Ritscher and others — has received some attention. Thus, “Jane Doe” being ignored fits with the usual pattern. Bushnell is the exception — probably because he livestreamed it. See “Ignoring Immolators Lulls the Society to Sleep.”
As Bushnell was burning himself alive, an officer pointed a gun at him, barking orders as if he constituted a threat. A security guard, Michael Harris, sustained injuries working to rescue “Jane Doe” — but there were similarities, where she was actually viewed as a potential threat.
At one point, the police report for “Jane Doe” refers to it as being a case of “arson”.
Much of the media coverage and general discussion of her self-immolation in December focused on if she had done damage. The Atlanta Police Chief said: “We believe this building remains safe, and we do not see any threat here.” The Israeli government released a statement: “It is tragic to see the hate and incitement toward Israel expressed in such a horrific way.”
Police records indicate that they obtained a search warrant and entered an apartment they believed to be associated with “Jane Doe” — initially using a drone:
The drone was able to relay information as to the layout and the belongings inside. After it was deemed "safe" entry was made with bomb technicians. While clearing the apartment no improvised explosive devices were located.
The police report also noted:
During the search a Quran was found in the bedroom along with a [sic] Arabic dictionary and a Hebrew dictionary. The bedroom bookshelf contained books related to fiction and fantasy. A "Drug use for grown ups" book was on the bookshelf as well. Two journals were seized from the bedroom. A thumbdrive was seized from the bedroom as well. A laptop computer was seized from the kitchen counter. A copy of the search warrant was left in the living room of the apartment. The front door [of] the apartment was secured before law enforcement left the premises.
When pressed for more information in compliance with an Open Records Request under Georgia law, Atlanta Fire Rescue Department claimed: “There is an ongoing and active investigation for the incident in question, which is why the only releasable information has been shared via the incident report. Investigative documentation is not available for release until the investigation is closed.”

For years, a mysterious figure preyed on gay men in Atlanta. People on the streets called him the Handcuff Man—but the police knew his real name. @atavist issue no. 149, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” is now live:
No one could be certain when the Handcuff Man had staged his first attack. Adamson claimed that he’d been terrorizing Midtown since the late 1960s, that he drove a white Lincoln, was about five foot ten, and had black hair and glasses. A sex worker said that the Handcuff Man had picked him up in Piedmont Park in 1977, asked him to take shots of liquor, then assaulted him. The victim managed to flee with a stab wound to the shoulder, and later saw the man again at the park eyeing other male hustlers. He didn’t report the crime because he was afraid of being outed to loved ones.
In 1984, Susan Faludi, then a twentysomething reporter a few years out from becoming a Pulitzer Prize–winning author, wrote a front-page story about gay hustlers for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She asked her sources about the dangers of their lifestyle and learned that “the greatest fear on the street right now is invoked by the specter of ‘The Handcuff Man,’ a man who reportedly picks up hustlers, offers them a pint of vodka spiked with sleeping pills and then handcuffs and beats them.”

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
January 24, 2024
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
JAN 25, 2024
The dust is beginning to settle after last night’s New Hampshire primary. Former president Donald Trump won the Republican primary with 54.3% of the vote, netting him 12 delegates to the Republican National Convention. Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley came in second with 43.3% of the vote, garnering her 9 delegates. Other candidates together took 2.3%, but none of them won any delegates.
There has been a lot of noise today about whether the New Hampshire results spell good news for Trump or bad news. While the result keeps him in the front spot for the Republican nomination, I fall into the category of observers who see bad news: more than 45% of Republican primary voters—those most fervent about the party—chose someone other than Trump.
As David French pointed out in the New York Times today, Trump is running as a virtual incumbent, and any incumbent facing a challenger who can command 43% of the party faithful is in trouble. President Gerald Ford discovered this equation in 1976 when he faced Ronald Reagan’s insurgency; President George H. W. Bush discovered it in 1992 when he faced a similar challenge from right-wing commentator Patrick Buchanan. While both Ford and Bush went on to win the Republican nomination, they lost the general election.
More important than opinions or history to indicate what the primary indicated, though, is Trump’s apparent anger about Haley’s showing. Politico’s Playbook noted that he “rage-posted” about Haley’s speech after her strong finish with posts that lasted far into the night. Ron Filipkowski noted that at 2:19 this morning he was still at it, posting: “NIKKI CAME IN LAST, NOT SECOND!”
In addition to attacking her from the podium, Trump appeared to threaten her when he warned her about “very dishonest people” she would have to fight. He said she was not going to win, “but if she did, she would “be under investigation…in fifteen minutes and I could tell you five reasons why already. Not big reasons, a little stuff that she doesn’t want to talk about, but she will be under investigation within minutes, and so would Ron have been, but he decided to get out.”
The tactics Trump might have been suggesting became clear this afternoon, when the chair of the Arizona Republican Party, Jeff DeWit, resigned after a recording that appeared to show him trying to bribe Arizona Senate candidate and fervent Trump supporter Kari Lake to stay out of the Senate race was leaked to the press. The tape itself was clearly contrived to show Lake as if she were in a campaign ad, defending Trump and America, but it includes DeWit’s pleas for her to stand aside for two years, presumably while the Arizona party regroups with less extremist candidates, and his request that she name her price.
This sordid story reflects a problem in the state Republican parties as MAGA supporters have tried to take over from the party establishment. In Arizona, challenging the 2020 presidential election—remember the “Cyber Ninjas” who audited the Maricopa County vote?—ran the finances of the Arizona party into the ground. Lake has continued to insist, without evidence, that the election was stolen, and she and other MAGA activists have called for purging the party of all but the Trump faithful. The recording positions Lake as a Trump loyalist fighting against party operatives.
In his resignation letter, DeWit claimed the recording had been “taken out of context” and said he had been “set up.” He noted that Lake has “a disturbing tendency to exploit private interactions for personal gain,” calling out “her habit of secretly recording personal and private conversations. This is obviously a concern given how much interaction she has with high profile people including President Trump,” he added. “I believe she orchestrated this entire situation to have control over the state party,” he wrote.
DeWit said he had “received an ultimatum from Lake’s team: resign today or face the release of a new, more damaging recording. I am truly unsure of its contents,” he wrote, “but considering our numerous past open conversations as friends, I have decided not to take the risk. I am resigning as Lake requested.”
It seems clear the Trump team is eager to consolidate power behind him no matter what it takes, especially in the face of what appears to be his weakness. Rising authoritarians depend on the idea they are invincible, so being perceived as vulnerable—or as a loser—hits them much harder than it does a normal political candidate.
Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel—who was recorded on November 17, 2020, pressuring two Republican officials in Michigan not to certify Joe Biden’s electors in a county he won by 68% and promising the officials to “get you attorneys”—has urged Haley to drop out of the race. Traditionally, party chairs stay neutral in primary contests. Tonight, Trump posted a threat to donors: “Nikki ‘Birdbrain’ Haley is very bad for the Republican Party and, indeed, our Country…. Anybody that makes a ‘Contribution’ to Birdbrain, from this moment forth, will be permanently barred from the MAGA camp. We don’t want them and will not accept them.”
For her part, Haley has vowed to stay in the contest. While observers point out that there is very little chance she could actually overtake Trump, it’s also true that either Trump’s obvious mental lapses or his legal troubles could knock him out of the race, in which case she would be the most viable candidate standing.
Curiously, what happened to Trump in New Hampshire was what, before the election, pundits suggested could and maybe should happen to President Joe Biden: a challenger would show that he was weak going into the 2024 election.
Instead, despite dirty-trickster robocalls in a fake Biden voice telling Democratic voters not to show up vote for Biden, he appears to be on track to win 65% of the vote as a write-in candidate—he wasn’t on the ballot—while Representative Dean Phillips and self-help author Marianne Williamson, who were on the ballot, together appear to have garnered just under 25%..
On Monday, Miranda Nazzaro of The Hill reported that the creator of ChatGPT banned a super PAC backing Phillips for misusing AI for political purposes. Billionaire Bill Ackman, who has been in the news lately for his fight against diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, attacks on former Harvard president Claudine Gay, and threats to media outlets that pointed out plagiarism in his wife’s doctoral dissertation, donated $1 million to Phillips’s super PAC.
There was other good news for the Biden camp today, too. Sign-ups for the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, have surged by 80% under Biden, with a record 21 million people enrolling this year. Trump has promised to get rid of the program, saying that “Obamacare Sucks!!!” and that he will replace it with something better, but neither now nor in his four years in office did he produce a plan.
Biden also received the enthusiastic endorsement today of the United Auto Workers union, whose president, Shawn Fain, had made it clear that any president must earn that endorsement. Biden stood with the union in its negotiations last year with the big three automakers, not only behind the scenes but also in public when he became the first president to join a picket line. “[Trump] went to a nonunion plant, invited by the boss, and trashed our union,” Fain said, “And, here is what Joe Biden did during our stand up strike. He heard the call. And he stood up and he showed up.” “Donald Trump stands against everything we stand for as a society,” Fain told the crowd.
More news dropped today about the damage MAGA Republicans are doing to the United States. A report published today in JAMA Internal Medicine estimates that in the 14 states that outlawed abortion after the Supreme Court’s June 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, 64,565 women became pregnant after being raped, “but few (if any) obtained in-state abortions legally.”
Finally, Jake Sherman and John Bresnahan of Punchbowl News confirmed this evening that although MAGA Republicans have insisted the border is such a crisis that no aid to Ukraine can pass until it is addressed, Trump is preventing congressional action on the border because he wants to run on the issue of immigration. Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told a closed meeting of Senate Republicans that “the nominee” wants to run his campaign on immigration, adding, “We don’t want to do anything to undermine him.” “We’re in a quandary,” McConnell said.
Jennifer Bendery and Igor Bobic of HuffPost reported that Trump today reached out to Republican senators to kill the bipartisan border deal being finalized, “because he doesn’t want Biden to have a victory,” one source said. “The rational Republicans want the deal because they want Ukraine and Israel and an actual border solution,” Bendery and Bobic quote the source as saying. “But the others are afraid of Trump, or they’re the chaos caucus who never wants to pass anything.”
“They’re having a little crisis in their conference right now,”

The apology letters that Donald Trump-allied lawyers Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro were required to write as a condition of their plea deals in the Georgia election interference case are just one sentence long. The letters, obtained Thursday by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution through an open records request, were hand-written and terse. Neither letter acknowledges the legitimacy of Democrat Joe Biden’s win in Georgia’s 2020 election nor denounces the baseless conspiracy theories they pushed to claim Trump was cheated out of victory through fraud. “I apologize for my actions in connection with the events in Coffee County,” Powell wrote in a letter dated Oct. 19, the same day she pleaded guilty to six misdemeanors accusing her of conspiring to intentionally interfere with the performance of election duties. “I apologize to the citizens of the state of Georgia and of Fulton County for my involvement in Count 15 of the indictment,” Chesebro wrote in a letter dated Oct. 20, when he appeared in court to plead guilty to one felony charge of conspiracy to commit filing false documents. A spokesperson for Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who brought the election interference case, declined Thursday to comment on the contents of the letters. Powell and Chesebro were among four defendants to plead guilty in the case after reaching agreements with prosecutors. They were indicted alongside Trump and others in August and charged with participating in a wide-ranging scheme to illegally keep the Republican in power. The remaining 15 defendants — including Trump, lawyer Rudy Giuliani and former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows — have all pleaded not guilty.

It’s just crazy. Crazy how one guy can cause so much chaos and disruption, such hostility and hatred, break the law habitually and never face accountability.
“I just need you to find, 11,780 votes. That’s one more than we have” were the words spoken by Donald Trump to the Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. This was a pressure campaign launched by Donald Trump to bully Secretary Raffensperger into violating the Constitution, and going against the will of the people of Georgia, and the United States.
Secretary Raffensperger, in what is sadly a rarity in Republican leadership, and Republicans as a whole, stood in fealty to the United States Constitution, and did not bend to the whim of the Tangerine Tyrant.
For his allegiance to the rule of law, the Constitution, and to the United States of America, he received countless death threats from so called patriots. These cosplay patriots threaten his family, his life, and all that he held dear.
It’s sad to say that a man, doing his job as he should. deserves a deep gratitude from this nation, but he does. He could have done what so many Republicans have, and bent the knee to Dementia Don.
Fani Willis was born in Inglewood California. Her father was founded a chapter of the Black Panthers for that section of California. He grew weary of the infighting and lack of substantive positive impact the Black Panthers were making and moved his family to Washington DC where he would practice law as a defense attorney.
Needless to say Ms. Willis grew up with a vast understanding and respect for the rule of law and a drive for justice.
She would attend Howard University studying political science and would graduate cum laude. In 1993. After graduating from Howard she attended Emory University College of Law and receive her Juris Doctorate degree.
Subsequently she would spend 16 years in Fulton County’s district attorney’s office before being elected as District Attorney. Her previous experience had led her to pursue Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) beyond just organized crime and directed at any muti faceted criminal activity.
Upon the lawlessness Trump perpetrated in trying to subvert democracy, Ms. Willis was appalled. Her admiration to the rule of law, and the binding order laid out in the United States Constitution brought her to go after this egregious act of sedition.
The Raffensperger call was not the only act of treason Trump and others engaged in. These exploits were not only implemented in Georgia. A slate of fake electors was devised to circumvent the actual electoral count. These fake electors were to swap the official results with ones falsely claiming Trump had won that state. This occurred in Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Mexico and of course, Georgia.
The conspiracy was extensive. Not only the fake electors scheme had transgressed, but a beakin and breach of voting equipment happened as well.
There was over 30 people named as, culprits, co-conspirators or conspirators. Including the disgraced former president, 19 were indicted.
Donald Trump was charged with under the RICO Act, 4 counts of false statements, 2 being false documentation, 2 counts of forgery, 1 count of impersonating a public officer, with 5 other charges dropped.
Rudy Guliani was co-conspirator #1 and charged under the count RICO, 3 counts false statements, 2 counts false documents, 2 counts forgery, 1 count of impersonating a public officer.
Ray smith III, a lawyer for Trump was charged with RICO count, 3 counts of false statements, with 2 counts false documentation, 1 count impersonating a public officer, 2 counts forgery
Cathy Latham, one of the fake electors and Leader of the Republican Party in Coffee County, was charged with RICO, 1 false documents, I impersonating a public officer, and 1 count forgery.
Robert Cheeley, another lawyer was charged with RICO, 1 count false statements, 2 counts false documentation, 1 count impersonating a public officer, 2 counts forged, and 1 count perjury.
John Eastman, one of the leaders in the whole plot, a lawyer, was charged under the RICO Act, 1 count false statements, 2 counts false documents, 1 count impersonating a public officer, and 2 counts forgery.
David Shafer, one of the fake electors and Republican state chairman, was charged under the RICO Act, 1 count false documents, 1 count false statements to the district attorney, 1 count impersonating a public officer, and 2 counts of forgery.
Kenneth Chesebro, another architect in the national scheme, and lawyer was charged under the RICO Act, 2 counts false documentation, 1 count impersonating a public officer, and 2 of counts forgery.
Mike Roman, a devious campaign staffer and odd private investigator, was charged under the RICO Act, 2 counts false documents, 1 count impersonating a public officer, andn2 counts of forgery.
Shawn Still, another fake elector, and Republican state senator, was charged under the RICO Act, 2 counts false documents, 1 count impersonating a public officer, and 2 counts forgery.
Jenna Elis, a big player nationally with the plot to circumvent democracy, was charged under the RICO Act. Same as White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. Jeffery Clark was also charged under the RICO Act, with 1 count false statements.
Then there was the Coffee County election equipment breach (which by the way they have had access to since the 2020 election to find any flaws. Just saying.) The indictments were charged to.
Cathy Latham, the Republican lead of Coffee County, under RICO, 2 counts election fraud, 3 counts computer crimes, 1 count defrauding the state of Georgia.
Scott Hall, a bail bondsman, charged under RICO, he was subsequently charged with 2 counts election fraud, 3 counts of computer crimes, and 1 count defrauding the state of Georgia.
Misty Hampton, the Coffee County elections supervisors charged under RICO act, 2 counts of election fraud, 3 counts of computer crimes, 1 count of defrauding the state of Georgia.
Sidney Powell, a massive instigator, main perpetrator and known kook, was charged under RICO, 2 counts of election fraud, 3 counts of computer crimes, and 1 count defrauding the state of Georgia.
This case was pretty cut and dry. These morons video taped some of their crimes, some were on national tv, some were recorded, and some confessed to their crimes.
Of those who confessed and plead guilty were.
Scott Hall, the bail bondsman, plead guilty to, conspiracy to commit intentional interference with the performance of election duties. This was 5 misdemeanor charges landing him 5 years probation, a $5,000 fine, 200 hours of community service, a public apology to the state of Georgia, and to testify truthfully in future trials.
Sidney Powell also plead to conspiracy to commit intentional interference with the performance of election duties, charges with 6 misdemeanors and sentenced to 6 years probation, a $6,000 fine, a $2,700 restitution, a public apology to the state of Georgia and to testify truthfully in future trials.
Kenneth Chesebro plead guilty to conspiracy to file false documents, a felony, a deli charge. He was ordered to serve 5 years probation, a $5,000 restitution, 100 hours of community service. A public apology to the state of Georgia, and to testify truthfully in future trials.
Jenna Elis plead guilty to aiding and abetting false statements and writings, a felony, and was ordered to 5 years probation, a $5,000 restitution payment, 100 hours of community service, a public apology to the state of Georgia, and to truthfully testify in future trials.
Like I said previously. The case was pretty much open and shut. The evidence was overwhelming, some recorded, and all the acts were easily followed. It seemed justice would be served to the United States.
Then came the sleazy actions from Mike Roman. He had served as an adviser and campaign staffer on many Republican tickets. He had also worked for the Koch brothers as an intelligence gatherer. He would get dirt on liberals opponents and conservative policies.
Through his dirtbag tactics he found out that early on in the RICO case Fanni Willis, and a fellow attorney Nathan Wade, working on the case had engaged in romantic relations.
These were 2 consenting adults, who happened to cop feelings for each other while working together. These things happen. You work with someone, day after day, they start looking good if the conditions are right.
This was brought to the attention of the court, and frankly the world. Trump and some co-conspirators claimed it was a conflict of interest. Also claiming that Wade received improper payments due to it.
The cases against Trump for the theft, illegal retention, and refusal to return classified information, as well as the election interference, January 6th 2021 insurrection case cost upwards of $50 million dollars to date. In contrast, Fanni Willis and the Fulton County DA’s case, as of mid summer was under $5 million. There are accusations that Wade was paid more than some people in the district attorney’s office. This is true as he was a special prosecutor and not paid by Fulton County directly.
Either way, two consenting adults, on the same side of the isle, having an office romance is absolutely not a conflict of interest.
Just as that slimy pig that Trump is, he found a way to delay the case indefinitely until the investigator was investigated. He has done this before. Lord f*ckin knows he’s going to do it again.
Fani Willis went from prosecuting one of the largest acts of sedition ever perpetrated upon our nation, against 30 conspirators, with mountains of evidence. To being asked how many times she had sex with Nathan Wade, in a disgusting contortion of the law.
The fact that Judge McAfee even entertained the dismissal of the case is unprecedented.
A bunch of well off, white men found out that a powerful, smart black woman was sleeping with her coworker and raised a ruckus about it. Trump being found guilty of sexual assault himself, and accused by over 20 other women of the same. The irony hurts it’s so grave.
In the stolen classified documents case out of Florida, the judge, Aileen Cannon, had been put on the bench by Trump. She dismissed the case. The Supreme Court, where Trump installed 3 of the justices, ruled for Trump in Anderson v Trump, where the Colorado Supreme Court had declared Trump was ineligible to run for office under the 14th amendment, section 3, which clearly states that anyone who has participated in “insurrection or rebellion against the United States” is barred from holding ANY federal office again. That same Supreme Court would drag its feet for 6 month, after deciding the Anderson case in under 6 weeks, in Trump v the United States, and rule that the president has absolute immunity for crimes committed while in office. With blatant disregard for what the entire premise of our nation beholds.
Now Fanni Willis is being ordered to turn over documents due to a lawsuit filed by an ultra conservative group. Again, making her out to be the person guilty of a crime.
The only crime Fanni Willis is guilty of is being a black lady, trying to take down a criminal organization. That and sleeping with a handsome, tall, mature black man.
Trump skirting accountability, as he always does, just further emboldens him to commit more crimes against our country. Now with absolute immunity to do so.
In the words of Bob Dylan, “it makes you feel ashamed to live in a land where justice is game.”

Aaron Rupar and Stephen Robinson at Public Notice:
Between President Biden announcing he’s stepping aside, his endorsement of VP Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party turning the presidential race on its head by quickly rallying around her, and JD Vance immediately crashing and burning as Trump’s VP pick, this week has been a historic one in American politics — so much so that last week’s RNC feels like a distant memory.
But it’s worth devoting some attention to how the press did Trump’s work for him by portraying the aspiring authoritarian exactly how he wants to be seen — as a heroic strongman and newfound champion of political unity. Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination for a third time on July 17 with a rambling, incoherent mess of a speech that offered a terrifying vision for America during its rare moments of coherence. His performance was widely regarded as a disaster. But a range of major newspapers didn’t cover it that way. More than a few headlines actually raved about it. The Boston Globe: “In a departure, Trump calls for unity, healing in America.” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “Trump urges unity after assassination attempt while proposing sweeping populist agenda.” Baltimore Sun: “Subdued Trump describes assassination try, accepts nomination.” As media critic Parker Molloy pointed out, these papers seemingly reported on Trump’s speech based on the prepared remarks, not the speech as he actually delivered it.

Trump will never pivot to unity because his whole brand is divisiveness
Not long after Trump’s attempted assassination at a Pennsylvania rally on July 13, mainstream outlets went along with the Trump campaign’s narrative: The shocking event had changed him for the better. When Trump made his first appearance at the RNC on July 15, the New York Times described him as “subdued” and claimed he showed a “glimpse of vulnerability.” But Trump had already demonstrated he was unchanged earlier that day when he posted on Truth Social that his idea of “Uniting our Nation” was the dismissal of all criminal charges against him.
Trump spewed his usual invective against his political foes throughout the week. The media, nonetheless, continued to take seriously the idea that he was a new man. Axios reported on July 15 that Trump “plans to seize the his moment by toning down his Trumpiness” and MSNBC’s Katy Tur described his first appearance at the RNC as “serene.” But the most egregious instance of this genre was a piece from Politico’s Natalie Allison, who wrote on July 17 that “there appears to be a new softness to Donald Trump, with people who’ve talked to him describing him with words like ‘existential,’ ‘serene,’ ‘emotional’ and even ‘spiritual.’”
[...] Largely left out of the coverage of the assassination attempt on Trump is the fact he not only has glorified political violence in the past but continues to do so — one of his central campaign promises is to pardon January 6 insurrectionists convicted of crimes. And he also wants to make it easier for people to obtain weapons of war like the one that shot at him and killed a man in the process.
The press sold a faulty narrative that Donald Trump is a “changed man” and a “unifier” in the wake of the assassination attempt, but in reality Trump was the same old unhinged turd that he always was.
