Happy Queer Media Monday!
Today: Asexual Fairy Tales by Elisabeth Hopkinson Many thanks to my local queer centrum for letting me do the photoshoot in their library. One day, I will actually get you to buy these books.
Tumblr media
(My own copies of the three books in this series, with my Pride bat plushie and some ace flags on the Asexuality / Aromance shelf in the queer libraray)
Elisabeth Hopkinson is a romantic asexual writer and amateur fairy tale researcher. She has written a series of three books that focus on retelling fairy tales through an asexual lens. The stories are actual, existing fairy tales from all over the world, as well as some more modern stories, and some stories written by Hopkinson herself. While she does change them a little to make them explicitly ace, there is always a very clear reason why she picked that specific story and how she relates to it, which she explains in short introductions at the beginning of every tale. This makes her work valuable not just as a fairy tale collection and as queer literature, but also as a way to introduce people to the concept of asexuality, and the experience of being ace.
The three books in this series are Asexual Fairy Tales, Asexual Myths and Tales, and More Asexual Fairy Tales.
You can find Hopkinson’s webpage here.
Queer Media Monday is an action I started to talk about some important and/or interesting parts of our queer heritage, that people, especially young people who are only just beginning to discover the wealth of stories out there, should be aware of. Please feel free to join in on the fun and make your own posts about things you personally find important!

Gotta appreciate fairies for capturing people with cake and wine rather than seduction like most mythical creatures. I would fall for their tricks every time

"Oh dear! I'm terribly sorry for jumping, though you frightened me!"
"It is quite alright, small fairy. I mean you no harm, I can assure it. You may call me Fry."
"I see, well my name is Elwynn. I am terribly sorry to bring our conversation askew so early, but as a costumer myself, I have to ask about yours! You look simply incredible, I must say!"
"Ah, Elwynn, my friend, you have mistaken me. I bare no costume, you see. My gills and my frills are simply how I was born."
"Oh dear, I'm so sorry for assuming! I don't see other species often, coming out to the water like this is quite the rare occurrence for one as reclusive as me."
"Wynn, do not let it guilt you. I rather approaches such as your own than those of fear I tend to garner. Do come closer, will you? My vision is faulty out of water."
"Poor thing, why is it you require to see me better? Do I have something on my mask?"
"Do not fret, you do not, I simply wish to admire your charm through less of a hazy blur."

won't you stay with me, my darling, when the war starts in my heart?
Author: hisbrokenrainbowwings | Artist: galakitty Posting on Monday February 20
In an unprecedented union, the dragon and human kingdoms will officially join together as Prince Castiel of the Dragonlands is engaged to marry Prince Dean. After many years since their first meeting, the time has come for Castiel to make a new home in the Winchester kingdom. While Castiel is drawn to Dean and touched by his efforts to connect, he worries about fitting in with the humans. But while Castiel finds his assumptions and fears challenged by his growing affection for Dean, it seems that he may not be the only one keeping secrets. Will their differences tear Castiel and Dean apart – or bring them closer together?
Keep reading for a sneak preview!
The first man to reach him was lanky, long hair falling in his eyes as he stared down at Castiel. He slipped off his horse easily, displaying his full height. “Are you Prince Castiel?” Castiel nodded, bowing slightly in a gesture of respect. “Yes, I am. Who do I have the honor of addressing?” The man smiled politely. “Prince Samuel, at your service, but please call me Sam. You’ll forgive my brother for lagging behind, I hope. He’s been agonizing over the right thing to say, I’m sure he’s still going over it all right no – ooof!” The second rider caught up, stopping just short of Castiel and knocking Sam to the ground. It had to be Prince Dean. No other man would dare embarrass one of the crown princes in such a way. “Don’t listen to a word he says!” Prince Dean dismounted, out of breath with the effort of catching up. Castiel stifled a smile. The exploits of the Winchester princes were legendary, known for their fighting abilities and spell casting skills. Somehow, he hadn’t pictured them as /brothers/, first and foremost. Sam muttered to himself as he stood, dusting off his breeches. “Fine, have it your way. I’ll leave you to it.” He grabbed the reins of both horses, leading them away and giving Castiel his first real look at Prince Dean. His eyes were the same brilliant green Castiel remembered. Most importantly, they were full of warmth. Castiel noticed the prince’s hands were shaking slightly. Could he possibly be nervous? He dismissed the thought out of hand. What would one of the most talented mages in the country have to fear in Castiel, especially in this form? Prince Dean cleared his throat. “Prince Castiel, I am honored to welcome you to Winchester. Our people have long awaited your arrival. I know they’re eager to meet you, but I thought perhaps you might appreciate some privacy while you settle in.” He was earnest, even if his speech showed signs of being rehearsed. Castiel was accustomed to the carefully planned machinations of the human court. He responded in kind. “That is much appreciated, Your Grace. I am touched that you and your brother were here to welcome me. I had assumed I would be met by your council.” Prince Dean’s brow furrowed. “What? No, I… of course, I wanted to be here to greet you. You’re going to be… I mean, you and I… we’re getting married. And you’re… you.” Castiel didn’t know what to make of that. His mother had prepared him for being ignored until the wedding. Apparently, in most arranged marriages this was the custom. “Well, yes. We will be married soon. But I certainly would understand if you would rather not spend much time with me before then.” Hurt flashed across the prince’s face, confusing Castiel even more. “Oh, I… is that some sort of dragon custom? Because I don’t know about you, Cas, but I want to know everything about you before we tie the knot.” He groaned. “Ah, jeez, I’m sorry, it’s Your Highness, not Cas. I just kinda always thought of you as Cas in my head, it’s tough to break that habit. Anyways, if you don’t want to be with me before the wedding, well that’s fair, I’ll stay away. I mean, who am I to mess with tradition, or, oh god, make you uncomfortable. I just don’t know all that much about you, you know? I mean I know a lot about dragons, I’ve been studying you guys for years, not just you, specifically. And… now I’m rambling. I knew this would happen, I knew it… SAMMY could you please bring the box over now?”
Now Castiel was truly bewildered as the flustered prince waited for Sam to make his way over. He smirked at Prince Dean as he handed over a small wooden box that appeared to be hand-carved. “Nice job, Dean. Real smooth. Remind me to ask you for tips before Princess Jessica comes to live with us.” “Shut up,” Prince Dean hissed as Sam retreated back to the horses.

since it's Pride Month, it's the perfect time for a pride-themed book cover. i made this simple edit for one of my good friends, who published her first book The Midnight Market about half a year ago! it's an entertaining, crime-solving retelling of "the Little Mermaid," featuring the aroace protagonist Sulaphraine as the titular mermaid.
the full summary of the book:
Sulaphraine, sorceress and lawkeeper of the seafolk, has had the very core of her magic stolen from her — her voice. To get it back, she must follow the thief onto land, but she'll need some help to bring him to justice. Enter Walter Fairfield, guardsman of Gullport. The chance to track down a thief is greatly appealing, but first he'll need to get on the same page as Sula. The unlikely pair will have to navigate clashing cultures and a host of magical obstacles to recover Sula's voice — before it gets used as an ingredient in evil charms.
if you're interested, please consider supporting The Midnight Market at this link!

Hello Hello, fellow people who need sleep. My name is Vic and I'm a writer. I use he/them pronouns though I typically prefer they/them. My writing regularly sticks to the exploration and interpretation of myths and stories in contemporary fiction however that doesn't mean I never write outside that genre. In my writing it's very important to me to represent the entire human population. I mainly focus on mental health, characters a part of the LGBTQA2s+ community, neurodivergence, etc.
I love sleeping and watching anything that makes me think, particularly about my writing. Presently I'm fixated on Criminal Minds, no spoilers though, I haven't gotten through all the seasons yet. :)
Aside from the thousands of story ideas I have saved on various documents, my main project is a story called Nevermore. A story focused on human grief in a fantastical world that's, perhaps, a little too close to home.

Queer tales here!
Orange often replaces yellow, and a bold red will separate pride colors
Links are on the main post, I may add them here someday but tumblr gets funny about cutting and pasting after a while.
Be warned: there are no explicitly ace characters, because at the beginning of the project (I was 16 and less informed) I didn’t know how to include it. And by the time I did start just explicitly saying queer label types in some of my stories, I had already mapped out exactly what I wanted to draw and write. But an IRL friend pointed out that two of the stories spoke to them as an ace person, and suggested I include these here.
Story with an Intersex man character
The Acacia Tree
Aro tales (more non-romantic stories can be found sorted here)
The Princess Who Never Laughed / The Golden Goose
The Eyrie
Ace Stories
Sleeping Beauty
The Twelve Dancing Princesses & The Snow Queen (the same pairing appears in both)
Tales with Trans Characters
Mulan
The Twelve Dancing Princesses
The Nose Tree*
The Youth Who Went Forth to Learn the Shivers
Puss in Boots
The Snow Queen
West of the Sun, East of the Moon
The Acacia Tree
*One character is a Wigudun person, and while they don’t have a flag, their society emblem are these colors
Stories with Same Gender Attraction
The Frog Princess
The White Snake
Godmother Death
The Nose Tree
The Youth Who Went Forth to Learn the Shivers
Puss In Boots
The Eyrie
The Snow Queen
West of the Sun, East of the Moon
Polyamory (some are mere set-up)
The Nose Tree
The Snow Queen

Last rb clarification since some tags got cut:
Society teaches you to be very open about your attraction to others, as this big grand thing to do. I didn't buy into the "rite of passage" confess! nonsense but I assumed the "be honest!" was due to honesty principles and respecting boundaries. It's ... not. It's society placing social pressure on people to get married and make babies. Society sa culture also teaches saying no is "impolite" and so there are real threats in this world, so assuming that your genuine honesty reads as pure intentions (and not easily misread as a threat) is wrong. I am an alloromantic asexual (I'm not sure what term to use for the romantic attraction: I rarely get crushes on people, any gender.) So what I mean by "I used to be honest about my romantic attraction to others" means that I ask FIRST if a platonic good friend would ever want to know if feelings change before assuming default they do, so that I am not making my feelings suddenly "their problem" socially without their consent. Some people DO want to know if feelings ever change in a platonic relationship (even if not reciprocated) like me, and some do not. Thanks to this allo heteronormative society, I was taught it was default that people want to know and that it's "right to confess". I miss social cues so I didn't understand that in hand with the aphobic sentiment that sexual=romantic attraction, admitting you like someone not only places a burden on someone due to society's teachings of "you must answer them" it also can come off as a threat-- making the person uncomfortable and pressuring them to say yes or face possible repercussion. When I was younger, I only was honest because I felt I was breaking a platonic boundary if my feelings ever changed, it never occurred to me then that "confessing" was implying that person was expected to reciprocate or even pressured to reciprocate. With all that said, I obviously know better than naive teen me, but teens need WAY better education about the proper ways to handle romantic attraction. Tbh kids, adults, all ages do. We barely get any education on sexual boundaries as is.
