speak ill by @moonsongdotmp3
-4111 words, teen
-developing/established relationship, ozai hate <3
"I hate your dad so much,” Sokka considers for a second. He tries to mix it up as often as he can when they play this game. “That I have considered starting an official petition begging Aang to reconsider his commitment to nonviolence.” // It’s quiet for a beat. He’s afraid he’s miscalculated, but Zuko laughs, broken and sincere. // (Or: 5, 8, 15 years after the war, Sokka talks shit about Ozai.)

Toph demands that Zuko fake date her. This goes just about as well as can be expected. Sokka steps in to show them how it's done, and this goes a bit better than expected.

-friends/idiots to lovers, mutual pining, getting together
Sokka pulls out a clean piece of parchment and starts to write: Reasons Why Sokka Would Be A Great Bodyguard for Lord Zuko // He smiles in satisfaction at the title. Seeing it in writing only makes him feel more confident in this brilliant, two-minute-old idea of his. Zuko is one of his closest friends, and Sokka is a great fighter, he would be the perfect bodyguard! He has the entirety of his trip in the Fire Nation to prove it to Zuko. This is going to be a piece of cake.
This Isn’t My Idea of Fun by @khaleeseas

-royalty/moon spirit!sokka, childhood friends to lovers, no war au, mutual pining, fluff and angst
If you asked Zuko, he and Azula saw far too much of Chief Hakoda of the Northern Water Tribe’s children growing up. It wasn’t until they were older, and Azula pointed out that - duh - their families were trying to set them all up, that he realized why. // He was told by his mother to be polite. These people were their friends and allies, and though their nations were as different as they came, harmony between nations was the most important thing. // It wasn’t his fault the Chief’s children were so annoying.

The first time a attendant spills Zuko’s tea and doesn’t immediately fall to her knees, begging the Fire Lord’s forgiveness, it is not anger but a resounding warmth that fills his chest.

Zuko almost said it. He almost said the words I think I’m in love with you, but he choked them back down at the last second. // Zuko would never be able to be what Sokka wanted. They might have needed each other during the summer, when two boys with too much weight on their shoulders found comfort in each other in the only way they knew how. // But now Zuko was Fire Lord, and Sokka was leaving.

Zuko and Sokka have been engaged to be married since the peace talks. Only they were the only ones who didn't know. // Everyone else thought they not only knew but that they had already been dating the entire time. // This is also news to Zuko and Sokka who have definitely NOT been dating but maybe they aren't as uninterested as they are protesting.

-23575 words, general
-fake dating, friends to lovers, mutual pining, bed sharing, fluff, miscommunication
Sokka receives an offer of an arranged marriage from the Northern Water Tribe. On the one hand, accepting would strengthen ties between their tribes. On the other hand, Chief Arnook has suggested Hahn as a potential match, and Hahn sucks. But with the future of the Southern Water Tribe Reconstruction project relying heavily on the good will of the North, Sokka doesn’t know how to say no. // (Katara doesn’t have to deal with this. Katara is dating the Avatar.) // Zuko has a solution. Sokka just wishes he’d realized he was in love with the Fire Lord before he agreed to pretend to date him.

Their newest proposal is a literal proposal: a marriage to unite the Fire Nation and the Water Tribes. // The Fire Nation offers Prince Zuko’s hand. // The Water Tribes offer Princess Yue’s. // Sokka is apparently the only person in the world who has a problem with any of this.

Zuko is courting Katara, and with every passing day finds new and insane ways of showing that he would quite literally move the spirit world and earth to make her happy. // In hindsight, it probably would've been better if Sokka had realised he was in love with Zuko at literally any time before this. Or preferably, never fallen for his best friend in the first place.

As the newly appointed cultural liaison to Northern Water Tribe, Zuko is the first Fire Nation Citizen to step foot inside the city's walls in nearly a century. He's determined to prove himself—to the Fire Lord and to his father—even if the Water Tribe's spirit-touched prince seems to want nothing to do with him.

ok hold on. acomaf is my fave book out of the whole series (it's mostly out of emotional value, i read it when i was younger and didn't have a real understanding out trauma and abuse only that i saw a character i loved getting out of a bad situation and getting happy) so obviously i didn't mind feysand being endgame and the development all of the characters had. i can accept tamlin turned out like that is realistic due to his trauma, i can accept feyre had to flee because it wasn't right for her, but the thing is after acofs i see no point to feyre leaving tamlin when rhysand ends up doing everything they told us tamlin was evil and unredeemable for. hiding the risks of her pregnancy, putting on shields on her, having feyre need to compromise over it. i honestly felt so betrayed by that. i'm not saying feyre and tamlin were good for each other, but it doesn't feel worth it to dismiss the potential they had for what we got with feysand.
also, sarah learn to treat "ugly" trauma with respect challenge. no they don't need to learn to physically fight to fight it. no they don't need a love interest to overcome it. yes the behaviors acquired from trauma and abuse aren't pretty but that doesn't mean a person is undeserving of kindness and compassion.
i think i had a point somewhere but i can't get to it. so hope you don't mind my rambling. anyway i loved your meta about tamlin i think he deserves better too
HOLY SHIT THIS ONE IS SO GOOD OK IM SO EXCITED
Bro you are so fine, I'm the one who doesn't make any sense and I totally get what you're trying to say. (Acomaf was actually my favorite book in the series too ngl)
BUT FUCK YEAH LETS TALK ABOUT RHYSAND.
I don't think it's a secret that Rhysand is one of my least favorite characters in media, probably ever? (How do I even put this into words) He is a bad character and to me, laughably so. You know how if you've ever written a character, there's that little phase that's like "what if people don't like this character' and then you're sad for a little bit? That's how Rhysand feels to me. He feels like SJM looked at this character and thought "I can't stand the thought of people not liking this character because I love him so much" and then did everything in her power to make sure we know how great he is.
Idk if this is just me screaming into the void, but I get to this place with my characters where like, especially if they are a little more morally gray or their decisions have negative impacts, I understand that I don't need the audience to like my main character. they can stand on their own, they can own up to what they do and they can grow from it. Thats what a good character does. That's how you keep your audience rooting for them. You gotta knock them over sometimes.
SJm doesn't knock Rhysand over. She doesn't push him to make mistakes, apologize, own up and move on. Rhysand has never made a decision that ended poorly for him. Everything goes the way he wants it to, because SJm wants us to know how cool and great he is. People who are cool and great don't make bad decisions! SJm doesn't let Rhysand fail, and she doesn't let him suffer his own decisions. Everyone else suffers his decisions, not him.
Rhysand's reputation as a good person hinges entirely on the audience liking him and/or thinking he's hot. And then what happens when the audience thinks neither of those things? Ya get a rly long post like this by a lil enby who is mad all the time. Rhysand loses all credibility when you look at him through a critical lens. Not a single thing the man does makes any goddamn sense. Here I thought acosf would give us a different perspective on Feysand and I was desperately hoping that Nesta would tell us what she really sees in them and how people around them really feel, I hoped that SjM would throw us for a loop and tell us that hey, she does know that Feysand are fucking toxic as hell and ruin the lives of people around them and she wants to show us that from an outside perspective but noooOoOOOoOoOOOO...
Instead we get Nesta hating herself because Rhysand told her that she shouldn't tell Feyre that Feyre could uh die in childbirth. Hey what the fuck.
Now I don't actually ship feylin, I kinda always sorta knew, even without spoilers, that it wasn't going to work out. Tamlin isn't sjm's idea of a good partner because he's not charming and witty and dark and handsome ya know? We met Rhysand and I knew that I was going to fucking hate this romance. Which sucks because I found Rhysand so intriguing in the first book. Ngl all the time spent in the spring court was kinda boring and every time Rhysand showed up to throw dead faeries at Tamlin I was like "oooooo" and I wanted to know more about why Tamlin, this awkward, blunt and kinda shy dude had beef with this super duper sly and shady man from another court.
I don't know if I've ever said this before, but SJm doesn't let her love interests grow. Rhysand doesn't change over the course of the story because he was already a good guy and his motives were for Feyre's sake I swear, the same goes for Rowan in TOG. SJm doesn't give Rhysand room to change. She needs to get to the part where they fuck make sure everyone knows that Rhysand is a good guy and actually he was good all along so that we like him more than Tamlin. It backtracks on everything bad Rhysand has ever done because you know... He had a good reason! It's fine!
I know it's probably just because SJm doesn't actually know how to write a good character growth arc but... Like can you imagine if Rhysand stayed the bad guy? Or at least remained the bad guy through acotar and acomaf? And then when Rhysand comes to take Feyre for his bargain it really was only to spite Tamlin? What about Rhysand, taking Feyre to the night court with him once a week every month for a long time, if only to see Tamlin's eyes grow darker and emptier every time he goes, and then he really starts to fall in love with Feyre. He's been a monster all this time, angry and cold and cruel and then he actually starts to fall in love. And then to get Feyre to stay he really does try to change, he stops antagonizing Feyre, he stops throwing dead faeries at Tamlin, and he stops harassing the Spring court. He starts spending genuine quality time with Feyre, he starts to learn about her and all the things she likes and he stops trying to get her to come with him just so Tamlin will be mad. He starts asking her to come with him because he wants to be around her and he prays that someday she'll want to be around him too. What if SJm let him grow.
But nahhhhhh instead we have a character who always knows the right answer to things, and he always knows how to fix every issue, and he is always so innovative and outside the box except that he isn't. We get a character who does the same shit as Tamlin but it's ok because he had a good reason not to tell Feyre that she could very well die in childbirth. Uhhhh don't know what that is but uhhh I know he has his reasons because all he has are his reasons.
It would be so easy to hold a mirror up to Rhysand and say "look at this. Look who you are. Do you not look just like Tamlin right now?"
But nooooooooOoOOOo Rhysand doesn't get to be wrong. Rhysand doesn't get to look like Tamlin because Tamlin is evil and Rhysand is definitely NOT I SWEAR.
But yeah I think the point I'm trying to make is that Sarah thinks so highly of Rhysand that he could never do wrong. He could never be like Tamlin, despite the narrative literally telling us the exact opposite.
Like you said, we lost the potential of what feylin could have been if SJm didn't suddenly decide that her audience needs to love Rhysand as much as she does. I think feylin could have been slow and sweet and a story of true healing and learning about one another. I think it would have been kind and steady and lots of "are you ok"s and "I'm sorry"s and "talk to me"s. Everything about Feysand feels rushed and hard and fast and the rest of the world doesn't have time to catch up. It's fucking exhausting to read it ya know what I'm saying.
(also can we talk about Rhysand like dying and Feyre finding the suriel and learning he's her mate and then instead of being like "k let's put a pin in that and fuckin save his life first" she like throws him around and everyone is like "wtf woman" and she's like I neeD tO Be alOnE these people have no idea how to prioritize)
Truly, I think it's innocent to a degree. There is absolutely no harm in wanting people to like your character. The harm comes when you destroy another character with no reason or explanation other than you want people to like a different character. Villain arc? Completely out of left field. You gotta build to that shit or like... Make it so that when you look back you slap your forehead and yell at a wall "OF FUCKING COURSE I SHOULD HAVE SEEN IT"
anyways, SJm treat "ugly" trauma with respect challenge SECONDED.
WELL IM SO SORRY THIS TOOK ME WEEKS YO WRITE IM HAVING A HARD TIME I know it probably doesn't make any sense I can't find my braincells BUT thanks for the ask @xelly
Tell me all your acotar things I love yo hear them !!

Thoughts on Season 2 Thus Far..
I gonna keep most of my thoughts on all the episodes brief, but also long enough where you guys can get the idea of where these episodes stand in levels of importance to me. I already have a lot personal favorites in this first half of the season and hope that the second half will deliver the same energy.
EPISODE 1:  Separate Tides
Good episode to start off the second season
Episode does a good job of addressing the different circumstances that Eda, Lilith, and Luz have with adjusting to life after the events of “Young Blood, Old Souls.”
We see the Golden Guard for the first time. With a voice too. I have more to say about him later when I get to the future episodes. But he is a treat!
The reintroduction of the portal and Emperor Belos’ plans for the human world in this episode, does a good job of reminding the audience of what is as stake this season.
Adore Luz and Eda’s pirate outfits ❤
Overall, a strong start to a very ambitious season.
Tumblr media
Episode 2: Escaping Expulsion (Personal Favorite)
We finally see Amity’s parents!!!
Wasn’t expecting Odalia’s eyes to be blue, but both parents fit the personalities I originally envisioned them to have
Luz teaching Eda and Lilith to use magic through the glyphs was so cute and shows how different both Eda and Lilith are when it comes to approaching magic
Love how Amity’s separation from Luz was the trigger that caused her to stand up to her parents
Even though I kinda knew the expulsion from Hexside wasn’t going to permanent, it still shows how much pull Amity’s parents have at Hexside and the Boiling Isles.
Looks like the abominations that Alador has made for profit will be used to fulfill whatever plans Emperor Belos has for the human world.
Loved Amity and Luz’s interactions!!!
Tumblr media
Episode 3: Echoes of the Past (Personal Favorite)
Fantastic King centered episode
I know that invisibility spell will come in handy in one of the later episodes. Good job, Luz
Hooty and Lilith are a riot this episode. Was not expecting them to get along at all this season.
I thought the show was going to make them polar opposites, but good to see that Hooty has a fan in the house.
King trying to remember his past and recounting his childhood memories was so sad because you realize that he has been trying to find out who he really is this entire time😭
The temple where King was born holds so much history and I hope we go back there soon
Will we find out what happened to King’s dad? What potential does King hold? Find out next time on DBZ!!!
Tumblr media
Episode 4: Keeping Up A-fear-ances
Finally get to see Eda and Lilith’s mom and her palisman’s a hawk.
Love the pattern of all members of the Clawthorne family having bird themed palismen. I wonder what palisman Eda’s dad has.
Love how the episode addresses the blatant issue that Gwendolyn has with trying to find a cure for Eda. She cares for her daughter, but she is being blinded by ambition
The scams in the book she was reading were kinda funny tho
Lilith being upset that her mom favors Edal more than her is relatable, but also makes sense considering how the curse impacted Eda’s childhood
Lilith wanting to travel with her mom makes sense and I’m happy she made the decision to do that
Lilith’s beast from is cool
We finally get more information about there being another human that came to the Boiling Isles long ago!!!
We finally catch up with what’s going on at home and see that Luz’s imposter is blending in just fine and Camila is none the wiser. At least that buys Luz some time in the Boiling Isles
Tumblr media
Episode 5: Through the Looking Glass Ruins
We get a Gus-centered episode and I’m here for it. I love it when the show deviates from the main narrative and focuses on the supporting cast
Even though I’m not the biggest fans of their personalities, the introduction of the students from Glandus High was great
I really love the character designs of these students, especially Bria, she looks so cute
Gus getting more character development and bonding with Mattholomule was good to see, I hope we see more of their interactions in future episodes
SO MANY LUMITY MOMENTS!!!
Luz getting more attracted to Amity
Amity putting her job on the line, so they could find Philip’s diary
Luz saying that she hopes to show Amity the human world one day
Luz successfully getting Amity’s job back
The kiss on cheek at the end of the episode by Amity
The blushing!!!💜💚-I can go on and on
Amity’s new look fits her well and shows that she is starting to live for herself and not her parents-Good!
Through the help of the Echo Mouse, we also get more information about why Philip came to the Boiling Isle in the first place.
But the Echo Mouse is being picky and stops before it gets good😫
Tumblr media
Episode 6: Hunting Palisman (Personal Favorite)
This is my favorite episode of the season so far and probably my top ten favorite episodes of the series.
We are finally introduced to Hunter as the Golden Guard and he is a treat
Everything from his character design, to his goals, to his interactions with Luz make him very intriguing.
The kids begin to pick out their palisman and a lot of them fit their personalities, especially Willow’s.
I’m glad the show is addressing the fact that Luz doesn’t know what she wants to do when she becomes a witch because tbh I’m not sure either. I know she wants to help and protect the people of the Boiling Isles but she can’t really do that if she wants to go back home.
What a good time to bring up this internal conflict
Kikimora wanting to get rid of Hunter makes sense seeing as how the Emperor’s Coven is based of performance
LIST OF FAVORITE HUNTER AND LUZ MOMENTS:
Hunter and Luz’s interaction on Hunter’s ship
Luz slapping Hunter to wake him up😂
Luz stealing Hunter’s staff
Hunter revealing his family history and why he defers to Emperor Belos
These two give off a good sibling vibe and I want to see more of this later
I originally thought the red cardinal was going to be for Luz, but it ends up being Hunter’s palisman at the end of the episode-Interesting
Whatever Luz’s palisman is going to be, I hope it’s an animal that fits her personality because I thought the red cardinal would have been perfect
Maybe she will get a violet-backed starling as a palisman🤔
Hunter comes off as very complex immediately and I love that the show let’s us know that he trying to figure out his place in the Boiling Isles as a powerless being.
Tumblr media
Episode 7: Eda’s Requiem
An Eda centered episode is such a plus for this season
So far I feel like the show has had Eda be a main plot point, but she hasn’t really been given her own episode-This episode takes a good step in the right direction
Eda feeling like she’s losing both Luz and King because they have both trying to find out more about their personal journeys is equivalent to a mother accepting that fact that her kids are moving across the country 😥
Eda reuniting with Raine is nice to see. You can automatically tell right off the bat that they have history
Raine being a rebel against Emperor Belos while working under Emperor Belos as a coven leader is BOLD AF
I see why Eda fell for them
We are introduced to the Abomination and Beast Keeping Coven leaders and I love their character designs, especially for Darius
The scene where Raine and Eda play together was so beautiful and does a fantastic job of representing how pure their relationship was and currently is
I love how Raine realizing that Eda has more to live for than she thinks and puts a stop to the song they play in order to sacrifice himself
I know we are going to see Raine again, but I really hope Belos doesn’t do anything bad to them. Raine is a sweetheart
Even though Luz and King lose the Gland Plix race, it was still nice to see that Eda came towards the end of the face.
The reveal of King wanting to take Eda’s last name at the end of the episode is one of the main reasons why I love King and Eda’s relationship. They really do come off as mother and son❤
Tumblr media
Episode 8: Knock, Knock, Knockin’ on Hooty’s Door (Personal Favorite)
This is a Hooty’s centered episode which is a first for this show, but this ended up being one of my favorite episodes of the show because of what it addresses
Hooty helping King accidently discover his powers was a shock to me because I just through their interaction was going to end up being pointless
King can now be more useful in battle 😁
We finally see Eda’s dad and see why Eda has a hard time accepting her cursed side.
We also learn how the curse has negatively impacted her relationship with so many people, such as Raine 😥
Eda accepting her cursed side is the first step to begin this traumatic healing process. At this point, I don’t think the show will cure Eda of her curse and I don’t think they should honestly. It teaches the audience that you sometimes have to live with what you have whether it be a disease, a physical disability or mental illness.
GOOD LESSON👌👌
Eda’s harpy form looks amazing. I can’t wait to see what the show will do with this form in the future.
Hooty helping Luz with her crush on Amity was one of the best parts of the episode.
The Tunnel of Love scene and the mixed signals from Luz and Amity had be dying🤣
Luz building up the courage to ask Amity out was so sweet and so real at the same time.
It came off as real conversation between awkward teens trying to figure a romantic relationship out🥰
LUMITY IS CANON!!!😍💜💚
This happened sooner than I thought, but I’m glad it did. This is huge, especially for a Disney show.
Just when I started to like Hooty a lot more, he had to mess it up when he ate a letter from someone who could be King’s dad (?)
DANG IT, HOOTY
Hooty freaking out when he thinks he messed with helping King, Eda and Luz never got old 😂
The comedy was on point with this episode and I love how everything just falls in to place.
Tumblr media
Episode 9: Eclipse Lake(Personal Favorite)
This episode had so much going on and I have a lot to say.
We get back to the Emperor Belos plotline of him trying to get to the human world and find out the Belos has actually been to the human world previously🤔
I wonder what Belos wants to do with Hunter and how he relates to these “plans”
Hunter is totally going to get betrayed by his uncle 😥
Amity’s palisman is adorable, I guess she got it off-screen
“DragonClaw Z”😂😂😂
Love how everyone is coming together to protect the house, it shows they really know what’s at stake
Amity using every opportunity she gets to call Luz her girlfriend is so cute❤
Hard to believe she hated his girl’s guts at the beginning of last season lol
Sick Luz is funny Luz
More lore about the secrets of the Boiling Isles and Titan’s Blood
I really wish Luz could have came to Eclipse Lake with the rest of the cast, but I guess the rest of the cast needed to experience Hunter for themselves lol
Hunter being roasted by Eda, King and Amity was hilarious 😂
“A bad, but sad boy.”-Yep that’s our Hunter 🤣
Hunter trying to get into Amity’s head concerning her relationship with Luz and her role in the Boiling Isles was surprising
I’m going to assume that Amity hasn’t been in a romantic relationship before so everything with Luz is new to her. Amity is usually very level-headed.
Even though Harpy-Eda is cool, I like that Eda doesn’t know how to control his form yet, it shows that she has a lot to learn before this form this 100% mastered
Hunter’s desperation to get his uncle’s approval is just sad; I really want to know his backstory because this isn’t it at all
Praise King for helping Amity figure out the text messages🙌
I love how Amity tries to relate to Hunter, it sweet and shows how much she has grown. If only see did a better job of hiding the key 😣
The fight between Amity and Hunter is amazing. I love when the show just flexes its animation like this.
It may not be better than Eda and Lilith’s fight, but I still felt the tension between these two characters. When these two grow up, they are going to be some of the most powerful witches in the Boiling Isles for sure.
Hunter getting to Amity’s head about harming Luz is a low blow imo, but I’m glad Amity knew what was at stake in the situation
Crushing the key was smart tho. Even in stressful situations like these, Amity still keeps her cool. We love to see it😉
Luz can now use some of the Titan’s Blood from Amity’s glove to try to return back home!!!
This episode had no business being this good. When the plot kicks in the show, it never fails to deliver.
Tumblr media
Episode 10: Yesterday’s Lie (Personal Favorite)
We finally catch up with what’s going on back on Earth and find out more about Luz’s impersonator.
The gang making a makeshift portal out all of Eda’s junk is very creative. I wondered what they were going to do with that stuff now that Eda can’t sell human collectables anymore.
The dimension that Luz enters through the portal is very trippy and creative. It makes sense since the portal they made is not authentic.
Luz mirror hoping and seeing someone impersonate her had to be scary. I couldn’t imagine.
We find out that Luz’s impersonator is actually a creature from the Boiling Isles known as a “Basilisk”
Vee’s backstrory is awful, I completely understand why she came to Earth and got comfortable after what she went through
We find out that Eda interacted with humans with an alias known as “Marylin”😂
Even though Luz doesn’t find a way home, this is the next best thing to let her mom know that she is okay.
Jacob gave off weird vibes immediately, so when he captures Vee to use her for fame, I wasn’t surprised.
What did surprise me was the fact that Jacob has been watching Vee for a while and he had the house where she transformed in monitored
I wonder if he’s seen anything else🤔
Camila is the GOAT. She came through and helped Vee out. A lot of people would have just ignored the situation, but she knew that Vee was important to Luz and I respect that👏👏
I’m glad she also agrees to keep Vee despite the situation
The scene between Luz and Camila was very heart-wrenching. Luz came clean about everything and Camila’s reaction to that was expected but it was still sad to see
The music and Camila trying to reach out to Luz was just 😭
This episode is a great mid-season finale. This episode addressed so much and foreshadows a lot of plot points to come in the later episodes.
Tumblr media
The first half of season 2 had some bangers. More than half of these episodes are already in my top favorites of the series and we still have 11 episodes left. Good Job Owl House. I can’t wait see what the other half has left in store 🙌🙌

Let's Talk About NatsuMikan: The Anime (pt. 3)
The anime is a different species than the manga, something that frequently happens during the adaptation from page to screen. Since they’re so different, I’ll analyze them separately.
In the last two sections, we explored how the anime treated the start of NatsuMikan's relataionship, as well as how different the story can be with some added elements and feelings. In this part, I'll talk about some more manga divergence, with perhaps more of an emphasis on Natsume because there's some new themes added in regard to his story.
Tumblr media
Episode 12 vs. Chapter 11
Another “filler” episode, filler in that the events are completely different than in the manga, is the 12th episode. Just like in the manga, Mikan finds out that her ability class is uninterested in participating in the culture fest, much to her dismay. She ends up spending the whole episode wandering around campus, watching her peers prepare but struggling to come up with something for her class to do. In the manga, she comes up with the idea for the culture fest on her own, but in the anime it’s a journey and it couldn’t have happened without Natsume. Whereas at this part of the manga, he can barely tolerate her, in the anime he already likes her and he helps her out in his own way.
Tumblr media
“‘Tis but a flesh wound.”
She finds Natsume in the classroom by himself, reading his manga. She vents to him her frustration and admits her jealousy: his amazing alice has many uses at a culture fest while hers does not. He burns the tips of her hair but confesses that he’s not allowed to participate beyond being a spectator. When Sumire’s brother shows up looking for Hotaru, he finds Natsume and Mikan, insulting both of them but especially Mikan. Natsume sets his hair on fire and then tells her to go back and talk to her class. The back of his manga gives her the idea of the RPG, much to his chagrin since he winces when she thanks him for the help. He talks to her the whole scene, defending her from Permy’s brother and even helps her (indirectly) come up with what to do with the SA class.
They have so much in common, specifically about the culture festival, and Mikan realizes this and it’s part of the reason why Natsume sticks up for her here. Just like her, he knows how it feels to be excluded because of your ability class. The manga’s version of events seems a bit darker, but it’s hard to be depressed after the counterpart’s version, where Natsume and Mikan bond together over their shared struggles.
Tumblr media
Although the class is on board with her idea, Jinno (again…) doesn’t let them participate, claiming that he wishes they couldn’t participate at all just like the DA class. The SA class gives up and Mikan blows up on them and runs away, running into Natsume, this time under a tree. She tells him she’s convinced that he’s lonely and wants friends, and she obviously doesn’t have any qualms with being a friend to him. She proposes the two of them spend the culture fest together, surprising him.
For all of their differences, after all, they’re more alike than they seem. Two outcasts befriending each other despite the school’s efforts to suppress their fun is empowering and uplifting and sweet. After all, despite how popular Natsume is, his worshippers mostly go along with whatever he’s doing and saying, rather than trying to find ways for him to have fun. For them, it’s more about getting Natsume to like them. For Mikan, it’s about getting him to smile, and that’s what sets her apart. She knows what he’s like, that he could easily tease her or insult her or cruelly reject her and yet she asks him anyway. She wants to include him in ways nobody else has, other than Ruka. You could easily see Mochu or one of his fan club members saying “Let’s ditch this anyway! Who cares! It’s lame anyway!” while Mikan gets to the heart of it. Natsume doesn’t actually think the festival is lame or boring. He just can’t participate and it hurts his feelings. “Let’s participate anyway,” Mikan says. “We’ll do it together because we’re both not allowed.” It’s what he actually wants someone to say to him, even if he won’t admit it.
Tumblr media
If you look close enough, you can see Natsume’s little blush.
She says they’re both on their own, unable to participate. He tells her to go talk to her class instead and reconcile with them. Despite Mikan giving him an offer that he wants to accept, he tells her to do what’s best for her. She is upset about her argument with her class, and just hanging around with him won’t make her as happy as she would be if she made up with them. He’s not selfish at all--he doesn’t want her company if it comes at the price of her happiness. Furthermore, he’s not upset in the slightest that after the episode they no longer have “we’re not allowed to participate” in common. It’s still something they bonded over and it’s enough that she can have fun, even if he can’t. She is impressed by his ability to know what’s wrong and help her in his own way. There’s a growing affection between them, where Natsume values her optimism and cheerfulness, and she values his secret and subtle kindness. She’s learning to see his hidden acts of kindness for what they are and appreciating them when she recognizes them. And no, he won’t tell her anything about the DA class except that it’s different than the other classes, but he doesn’t get mad at her for asking. He wishes he could tell her. It’s just not an option. The crow disrupting the songbirds on the streetlamp is so metaphoric, it’s kinda obvious. But is the crow Natsume, who can’t have fun like the songbirds, or is the crow Persona, who ruins the fun he sees?
Tumblr media
Genuinely I’m shocked that Natsume survived this emotional ordeal. How did he not go into cardiac arrest.
Right after Mikan’s departure an onlooking Hotaru asks Ruka if he's glad nothing happened, as if something would’ve happened. Their connection and softness is something perceptible, even from a distance. He’s different with her, and both Hotaru and Ruka can see it.
Then Natsume passes out, implying that he felt poorly during his conversation with Mikan but didn’t let it show, probably so she wouldn’t worry. Knowing that Natsume had earlier gone on a mission where he presumably gets shot in the side adds a new layer to their interactions. After all, he hadn’t told Persona what was wrong when he’d asked and Ruka was surprised too, so it can be assumed that Natsume went back to his dorm after the mission and then patched himself up. Seeing as he is only ten years old, it couldn’t have been that good of a patch-up, and he is still injured. Natsume was grouchy because of the culture fest and because he was dealing with agonizing pain all day.
Tumblr media
Kitty, you better not be dead.
In any case, Mikan asking Natsume to hang out is a sign of Mikan warming up to him, and wanting to spend time with him. This can be contrasted with an event that happens around this same time in the manga, though Manga!Natsumikan still hate each other by the time the Culture Fest is announced. He likes her in the anime though, at this point in time, and his rejecting her invitation is not because he doesn’t want to hang out with her, but because she still has a chance to make things right with her class and have a fun Culture Fest without him.
The Reo Arc (Episodes 13, 14, & 15 vs. Chapters 13, 14, 15, & 16)
The Reo Arc (the arc that turns Natsume’s image of Mikan completely around in the manga) is a bit pointless in the grand scheme of things in the anime. Don’t get me wrong, it’s more or less the same story and it’s still fun to watch, but it holds a different weight in the manga. In the anime, he already likes her at this point, so his feelings don’t change much, though they might have gotten stronger and possibly even softer (he seems very angry at himself for liking her before this arc, probably to keep his character in line with the manga, and after the arc he is much less upset about his feelings... or maybe just as upset but for different reasons). The Reo Arc was much better done in the manga. It served two purposes: to make Sumire one of Mikan’s friends and, most importantly, to have Natsume start liking Mikan.
If he already likes Mikan, then the anime should’ve focused more on the purpose of having Sumire and Mikan become friends but the emphasis does not change. It stays focused on Mikan and Natsume, attempting to serve a purpose that has already been served. Plus, the intervention of Narumi and the SA class seems very silly and was done to fill up time in the episodes. I also don’t understand why the culture fest started while Mikan, Natsume, and Sumire were in Reo’s custody, since that wasn’t the case in the manga and it seemed like they changed things for no reason, not even revealing the impact of that change. Furthermore, they were forced by this arc to then include Reo in the Circus Arc, which was undoubtedly the worst mistake of the anime. After all, including a potential big bad who just disappears after he kidnaps three kids isn’t satisfying at all. Narratively, they had to bring him back again as a villain, but the way they did it was lackluster.
Of course, not everything has to have some thematic significance and not everything has to be finely tuned to still be good, but there’s little for me to analyze if it’s so unchanged.
Tumblr media
Though there is one scene, before anyone gets kidnapped, that has plenty of stuff to analyze and is thematically important. Natsume has a nightmare of himself entirely shrouded in darkness and surrounded by people whispering about him. He runs, because it’s all he can do, begging people to leave him alone. It’s almost sad that in many ways, Natsume acts so cold because all he wants is for people to leave him alone and yet this behavior is for some quite appealing (hence he has a fan club he couldn’t care less about) or so repulsive that his upperclassmen bully him even more. The dream then shifts to Persona telling him he has a mission, so on top of bullying and ostracization and exclusion, he is also forced into the position of child soldier, doing unspeakable things for an organization that does not care about his safety in the slightest. That’s how he feels, really, like there’s just too much for him to handle, and not enough good to make up for it. He’s shouldering so much pain and has nobody to talk to about it. But then there’s a light! And Mikan’s voice calling for him! And he reaches for her, because it’s the first brightness we’ve seen in this dream, and the first he’s seen in a while.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, that’s not where the dream ends. Natsume can’t reach her. Persona’s grasp is too strong, and he gets pushed right back down into the darkness. This is the most important part of the dream, really, but the part that gets most overlooked. Mikan is Natsume’s light, but he’s not allowed to have her. Natsume’s particular brand of coldness and cruelty to Mikan is to protect her. His life is nothing but darkness and her being his light only illuminates him, while it would bring her darkness and possibly even dim her light. You can’t mix black and white without getting grey--his life would brighten and hers would fade. Moreover, Natsume is dying. He won’t get to be with Mikan, even if he wanted to, even if it wouldn’t ruin her. He doesn’t have time. By the time he gets close enough, he’ll be dead, and it would all have been a moot point.
Tumblr media
So much misunderstanding about Natsume’s behavior stems here, from the mistaken belief that he is cold and cruel and mean and distant from Mikan because that’s just the way he is, rather than the way he has to be in order to protect people from himself. From his back story in the manga we see that Natsume was always a snarky, unsmiling kid, but he wasn’t like he was when Mikan met him. He had warmth, passion, life, and the school snuffed that out of him. If Natsume’s head weren’t held constantly under cold water, he’d have a much easier time making friends, having fun, and being happy. He might even give wooing Mikan a shot, because as it stands now, he is not even close to considering it.
Anyhow, the rest of the arc is very similar to the manga, so we’ll focus on that for the next essay. I will discuss this more when I analyze the manga, because those events stay the same but matter way more in terms of the manga.
Episode 16 vs. Chapter 18 & 19
Mikan and her SA class have a labyrinthian Aladdin activity, accomplishable only because of their unique alices, but at first no one wants to play. It takes Mikan’s friends--Ruka, Sumire, and Narumi--to make the attraction popular. I’ll talk more about this in the manga section because it means more in the manga and the anime adaptation didn’t change the original much. The analysis will be much more satisfying in context of the manga, anyway.
Episode 17 vs. Chapter 20 & 22
In the seventeenth episode, Mikan and co. visit Hotaru’s attraction--featuring Pigula from the manga and a little competition attraction featuring chickens. The one noteworthy Natsumikan moment is Natsume conceding that “everyone has to be good at something” when it turns out Mikan is pretty good at the game.
That seems like it could be a compliment, but considering that Mikan is athletically talented and cheerful, she is good at things beyond a chicken game. It just so happens that this game plays on her strengths. Silly Natsume. Later on, Mikan shows her compassion for the little boy who screws up his chicken and Hotaru’s backstory is unlocked. In this episode, the emphasis is on Hotaru and her brother. The manga explores different themes, including Mikan’s insecurity about her alice and not knowing what she wants to do with it, as well as Ruka’s feelings about his triple-star status.
Tumblr media
There is one thing that really stands out in the anime that doesn’t have the same meaning in the manga. Earlier, Natsume and Mikan bonded before the culture fest about not being allowed to participate and when she asked if he wanted to hang out with her during it, he helped inspire her to make up with her friends instead. After beating the labyrinth, Natsume got three wishes from Mikan and one of them was to spend time together during the festival. He doesn’t exactly put it that way, in the manga or the anime, instead opting to wish that she’d carry his stuff around, but ultimately he wanted what she had offered: to spend time together during the culture fest. It makes him happy and makes his festival experience so much better, even if she is a downer for some of it.
Summary
This part of the anime, we discover some more information about Natsume. This new information adds new layers to his relationship with Mikan. The scenes the anime adds give the story some extra richness, like the dream he has at the start of the Reo Arc. Because of the addition of Natsume's perspective, we can see more clearly why he acts the way he does, but also why despite all his acting cool, he's still just a kid that wants to have fun and be happy, and why it crushes him that he's not allowed to be a child.

REVIEW 313
took me some time to actually get into that review lmao But i really loved the episode. I know some people will probably have complains about it, but as someone who absolutely loves Abigael, I really liked it. And honestly the fact that abigael was finally included in the main story is not even the reason why. I loved the pacing, it actually felt like Charmed. The stakes, the construction, the format, it was all on point. It was genuinely their best episode alongside 307 (two episodes related to the tomb lmao) and one of their best in the show imo.
I've put it in "hidden" cause it ended up being so long I did not expect that im sorry 😭
SCREEN TIME
Maggie: 29m20s
Macy: 27m36s
Mel: 25m39s
Abigael: 20m17s
Jordan: 10m32s
Harry: 47s
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not gonna lie, I did not miss Harry this episode. Maybe it's just cause I don't like the way they have been writing both him and Macy this season, way too focused on the relationship, but his story does not really interest me. And I enjoy watching Macy interact with other characters a lot more. I think we could have had a little bit more of Jordan as well.
What I liked
where do i even start. I genuinely enjoyed so many things in this episode.
As said earlier, I really enjoyed the structure of the episode, to me it finally really felt like charmed. The way the episode was done was beautiful and I LOVED the trial in a general manner. They're terrible lawyers, but still loved it lmao
Ok hear me out, the fact they had abigael and macy say what the fan had been saying but reversing the roles was actually sent me lmao
I really enjoyed that they balanced the rights and wrongs of abigael. I'm part of the people who think that overall, most of what she did was not that deep tbh, but the episode allowed to have nuances and hold her accountable for things she did while also recognising that she did good things.
Abigael finally interacting with the sisters. To me, that's the sign of good characters tbh, how they can interact with different other leads/mains and such relationships being interesting. Abimel, i'll talk about it a bit later cause i have lots to say. But AbiMacy ? I absolutely always love their scenes, one of the reasons being that I genuinely think they're the two best actresses in the show and you can really feel it when they're on screen. They have easy chemistry and whatever they are doing, they just work. They also had one of the best potential of the show in terms of dynamic and I will never forgive the writers for ruining this, especially because it's in part because of a man. Anyway, their scenes were amazing to watch and I need more. I was especially happy because let's be honest, if Macy has valid reasons to dislike Abigael, they often miss-portrayed that in the show and it often came across as being mostly based on the whole love triangle between Macy Abi and Harry. But this time it really was not and Macy was quite fair, even reaching the conclusion Abi doesn't belong in there - she does not- and I liked that they actually were fair on Macy's dislike and distrust. Then there was AbiMaggie. Honestly, it's not a relationship i expected to enjoy that much but oh god i love them. I loved them in episode 207 and I still do. They just have such a funny dynamic, I can't even explain it correctly but it just work. They're throwing remarks at each other sure but it's almost in a sweet funny way. Abigael calling Maggie 'Legally Brunette" was so funny and cute at the same time.
Talking about Maggie, I really liked her this episode. I love how she reacts in situations where they need a cold head. She takes the lead, she does what needs to be done and she reaches the goal. I really enjoy seeing her taking that role a little bit more. Especially because to me Maggie was always the one with the most nuanced view on the world which I really appreciate. I loved her speech at the end and she grew so much since season 1, she's really so great. The more we advance in the show, the more she shines.
I really liked what happened at the end with the sisters recognising that they are themselves not perfect and are even chaotic. I have a point about being chaotic for later but anyway. Yes the sisters are not perfect. Honestly, they have done questionable things in the past themselves and often are the cataclysm of new things happening. I think it just makes them more interesting and better characters. Black and white can only get so long. Nuanced, imperfect, that's where the complexity lies and what is more interesting imo.
The perfecti really are good characters. I mean their logic was completely f*cked, but they are so entertaining to watch, it's actually great. I like also that they continued that idea that logic without emotion is dangerous. But in some ways tbh, the Perfecti are not even logical. They want to think they are, but their own logic is flawed and like Macy said, completely lacks context.
Finally the power of three and FINALLY, the plot goes forward. Maybe that's another reason I really enjoyed the episode, the fact that it actually had a good flow, it felt like one constructed episode and it actually advanced the story which cannot be said about a lot of the episodes. So I'm happy that happened.
And finally Abimel. I mean, no one can be surprised Abigael has feelings for Mel tbh, girl has not been subtle about it lmao But that declaration was actually cute and their scene at the bar ?? paralleling the one in season 2, it was so sweet. I just love them tbh, and I really think they could have been the ship a lot of us were waiting for in the sapphic community especially.
Abigael's past. Like I loved learning more about her past and her mom. Obviously her traumatic past does not exempt her from her own actions but I do believe it give strong grounds for redemption. it also gives us a lot of insights in her character. Her mom was an absolute monster and what she did to her was terrible. There is no surprise in Abigael's absolute lack of self worth and her unhealthy coping mechanism. Like her mom basically spent her life telling her she was deficient and then punished her for something she had no control on whatsoever. She punished Abigael for her own action and her own liaison with a demon. She probably projected her anger about that relationship on the child that came out of it and it's absolutely horrifying. Like no wonder Abigael is not fond of witches and went into the demon side tbh. Like that's not surprising at all. It also explains why she was so against the idea of witch = good that the sisters keep perpetuating because that's simply not what she experienced. Again, it does not excuse everything she did but I do believe it helps understand the character better and that ultimately, it gives space for a redemption. And again, kuddo to both poppy and the actress who played her mom. First that was great casting and it was really well played.
Remarks
To be honest, I don't really have things I genuinely disliked so I'm more gonna do like a section where i could criticise some of the aspect which to me did not necessarily made sense but were often still funny, and who knows maybe done on purpose. It's gonna be a mix of a little bit of everything.
One of the first thing I was kinda confused on was their use of the term chaos. Because, well, chaos doesn't equate evil. But that's the angle they started taking at the beginning which to me was confusing. It didn't make the episode bad, but the more I think about it, the more I'm like the defence they were going with had nothing to do with the charges 😭 Like, the sisters tried to prove that basically Abigael was a good person. But the charges were that she was chaotic. and by the end of the episode we did reach that kind of point where they said everyone was chaotic and everything - which i liked - but also didn't really match the angle they took the entire episode. Because, I personally never saw Abi as evil. But she is 100% chaotic like that girl is the definition of chaotic and I love her for it. But her doing good or bad is not necessarily what makes her chaotic. Good deeds can be as chaotic as bad ones. For example, Abi binding her own power could be considered as good by some people (it's not really but you see what I mean) but by doing so, she would lose the title of overlord and therefore end the treaty. In that case the war would start and that would definitely be chaotic. If she was to stay overlord however, and control the demon world, which can be seen as bad i guess, she is keeping the war from happening and stopping attacks toward witches and innocents, which is the contrary of chaotic. So yeah, the angle they took did not actually make that much sense cause the two are not the same.
Not gonna lie, bringing Godrik up was so weird to me cause like he tried to kill her first and they all know it, yet she was the one said to try to murder him and I was like ? did we all forgot what happened ? 😭
Some of the things brought by the perfecti - such as her killing those humans or demons - seemed weird because like, the sisters did the same in the past 😭 But also that's part of the whole lack of context aspect I guess.
No they really used Francesca as a witness out of all the people in the world like the woman is a whole child abuser who asked help to the elders, which have been established as like, not good people lmao I know it was part of the whole the perfecti are very selective on the information they actually take into account and they use the information as well as twist them to fir their own narrative but still it came across as weird because that woman was the definition of evil. But that's also what ticked the sisters so well.
Why did they not call Harry to testify was also kinda like ... weird. I mean at the same time I can't really complain but still, it was a bit odd. Also the fact they never thought about showing what was abigael actually doing with Jordan lmao I mean it wouldn't go along with the plot but still.
Ok, that take is subject to controversy and I know it but anyway : to me, Abi stealing Macy's power was ... not that deep. Don't get me wrong, the story was bad. The execution was even worse. In the show itself tho, objectively, as an act, it was not that bad. It actually made a lot of sense for Abigael to take it for herself. Macy wanted to get rid of her demon powers, no one was forcing her. And Abigael actually asked her multiples times if she was sure. Macy definitely had her reasons to do so. But at the end of the day, Abi picking them up when they were gonna disappear in thin air is really not that bad. It's logical. Don't get me wrong I'm glad Macy is getting them back, but I also think there has been a lot of mix up between the actual act of stealing the powers and the way it was done/optics ( I still don't understand how anyone wrote that scene and was like, yeah kneeling is a good idea ??? Like what's wrong with you 😭). But like ultimately, the act itself is not bad. questionable ? sure. Evil ? really not. Like let's be honest here. Abigael never hid who she was (past ep3 obviously). She did not pretend to be an angel, nor that she was a good samaritan. At the end of day, the sisters knew who she was and how she worked. They came to her knowing this. At some point, there is a need to acknowledge that, she was no angel, but they knew that and still went to her. She said it herself, she is used to fight for herself, and she'll sting to protect herself first - which i personally don't really hold again a character. If you go in bed with a scorpion, you can't ignore the fact there is a chance you're gonna get stung. Plus, when Abigael "stung" she also actually still gave them what they wanted/needed. I personally never saw self interest negating a good action. I don't really care if she gets something out of helping. Like at the end of the day, why wouldn't she take them ? In some ways however I do understand why Macy would be mad, she asked for help and she didn't realise Abigael stole them and she doesn't like abigael in the first place so why would she be ok with Abi taking them. That's valid too. But objectively, it was more a she was offended and mad that Abi herself had them more than a it's a terrible thing to do kinda feeling. So like it's a bit of a weird situation because Macy being annoyed and mad is valid but at the same time, it's really not that bad in itself. But overall that story should have never existed in the first place. And certainly not happen like this.
Abimel. I loved it but I also have issues with it. Mostly based on the fact we learned Poppy was leaving the show. And not gonna lie, I cant stop myself from feeling like it was almost a bit .. baity if I dare say. They had basically admitting having feelings for Mel and low key hoping it could lead somewhere when honestly, if she's leaving, they did not need to make it romantic. Because honestly, watching this episode not knowing she would leave ? You'd definitely could think it's happening, especially with all the other hints in the past. They could have made it like more about how Mel was the one giving her a real benefit of the doubt and they had a connexion and she wanted to be worthy of that. It would not be romantic. Especially cause she admitted caring about all sisters so it would have worked. Again, don't get me wrong, I want the most Abimel i can get lmao but also it feels a little weird. It's complicated. 😭
Jordan is definitely coming back, I just wonder what are going to be the circumstances. I completely understand why my boy needed a break. Like their time in the tomb was long. We don't exactly know how time works there but remember, in episode 7 when the sisters were stuck, the normal time was like what ? hours ? while in the tomb it was days for Maggie. So there it was days in normal time so in the tomb ? could potentially feel like weeks, months even. So yeah, give him a break and some time to breath. I know they're dragging this whole Joggie thing but because of Covid i also understand and will let it go. I really like them tho.
Abi has some alcohol problems I feel like should maybe be talked about. Like she uses it as an escape, as a way to numb her feelings. There is a reason it was used to symbolise her submitting herself to the tomb. And her first reaction after leaving the tomb was drinking. When she feels unhinged or vulnerable ? She drinks ? When she lost the title of overlord ? She drank. Alcohol is her escape which is a bit worrying.
Not about the episode but I think it needs to be brought up. I've seen people trying to say they brought up the abuse storyline for abigael out of nowhere and like. Listen I completely understand not trying to give more thoughts to a character you dislike, that's fair enough. But saying that storyline is out of nowhere is just a lie. The only new elements we had here were the details of the abuse she went through. They showed the clip again in the episode, where Abigael talks to Mel about her mom. She rejected her, she made her felt, deficient, wrong. All that is emotional abuse. She said her mom tried to fix her which can easily be thought about physical abuse. Like none of these things were new. To be honest, not a single thing they clarified/established for abigael this episode does not follow up with what was in the show in the past. Her feelings for Mel were honestly rather obvious at this point. Her not wanting TCO to get hurt ? There is literally a scene where Godrik tells her it's her head or the sisters and she never really even thought about throwing the sisters under the bus. She even asked who knew and it's easy to think it's because if no one knew she could put it under the rug. Again, it's fair enough for people to dislike her to not try to put more thoughts into her motivations or scenes in a general manner, but then you can't really say things are out of the blue.
And most importantly, I'm sorry, I don't care if you dislike the character, but if you dismiss the abuse just because of the dislike, that's a problem. What a character goes through in her past does not, in any way, have to change your opinion about them. Whatsoever. However when it comes to issues like child abuse, the bare minimum would be to be respectful of the subject and not say "she deserved it", "should have done more" or just say you don't care cause that changes nothing. Again, it doesn't have to change anyone's opinion at all and it does not excuse behaviours, but man, minimal respect is not that hard.
Highlights
This episode genuinely had such funny moments, i loved it.
« Is this a hard time to admit I failed debate in high school ? » and « could the defendant keep her commentary to herself » competing with each other for the funniest part of the episode. The delivery was perfect on both part. And Abi and Macy interactions are always so good and them bantering more or less seriously all the time is sending me. Macy was just so annoyed with her, i loved it.
« Need something legally brunettes » I said it already but I loved that little scene between AbiMaggie and that line particularly.
Abigael went from saying "I could care less about any of you" to "because I deeply care about her" followed by a whole ass declaration AND admitting she does actually care about all of them. My girl got absolutely played and it was genuinely so funny. Like Abigael was so freaking smug about testifying against herself and she got played so hard, she was SO annoyed it was actually hilarious.
"Every battle I fought, I fought alone" like excuse me while I'll go cry in a corner. Again, Poppy has been absolutely killing her role this season.
"Your arguments are illogical" the perfecti have such audacity like girl have you heard yourself ? 😭 no one is being less logical than you right now.
Lmao when Macy said Abigael belonged into the tomb, Mel was not agreeing 😭 And Maggie was having none of the drama either she just wanted out.
The sisters realising they had to be Abi's character witnesses lmao it was hilarious pleas idc.
Theories
With Poppy Drayton leaving, there are two theories I kinda have. Obviously Abigael is either gonna die or leave. Ngl, I can feel the dying one coming more but well, that brings the two theories.
Abigael would sacrifice herself. Which I don't like but honestly let's be honest, there are 95% chances of that happening. I could see her sacrifice herself for Mel or for the sisters in general. But that's where my abimel issues are coming. I love abimel. I want the most abimel i can have until the end. But Abigael admitting have feelings for Mel just in the purpose of having her sacrifice herself for her and to be 'worth it' ? that's not only a byg trope, it's also lazy.
If she just leave, which wouldn't really make sense to be honest cause why would she just leave, would she give up the title of overlord (why even) or would they bound her powers (i would hate that) ? but anyway, if that's the case, I could actually see her learn Waverly is not actually the one rejecting her. Waverly could very possibly not be the one who communicated with Jordan and the sisters. No one ever saw her, the letters are only signed by her name. It's a bit sus tbh, so nothing stops it from being Francesca actually impersonating her daughter to keep her away from Abigael.
I want to know more about the perfecti. We know they killed charmed ones before, and it doesn't seem like charmed ones existed when they were created ? Maybe the charmed ones were created after they went into the tomb ? I still am not sure about them going into the tomb by themselves tbh. But also they don't seem to be evil in the sense they want power or whatever, more in the fact like they consider themselves perfect and that if someone stands in their way, they'll just get rid of them.

aw man "no she was my kid"
"cas died you were wobbly"
"you're just bigger" ah
an it feels right moment
1. loneliness, just a spitball. Just. The monster(or at least when you get killed) here tends to be loneliness, which also feels American, in a way.
2. bars. America's third place, it's what keeps people connected, it's where you get the talk of the town. it's probably important they're connected to alcohol and the night
both one and two are like..America and American culture
3. girls but it feels wrong. Like they kinda flipped the one night stands thing, but it like. yes I know they're not making anything about the patriarchy, but felt wrong.
4. the system. Emma didn't Rebel rebel, neither did Lydia. but they weren't happy about it. Emma resisted. Like resisted, took path of least resistance, has no other option because you pasted over your personality.
it feels important.
5. I feel like fatherhood. Like the idea of someone Not Wanting to be a Father for reasons of like "I'd be terrible at it, I'd ruin the kid" but so clearly wanting to be a father, so clearly wanting to raise someone, but terrified.
and Bobby's tied into it, because Bobby thought about it the same way, and he ended up adopting the boys(well kinda). Like really, they're more nurturing than they're told they should be because of Macho Vibes, and that(and Dean clinging to Bobby's flask) is important. Like yeah Bobby's space in the world is missing(no expert) but so's the space in the narrative, their father is dead.
6. paranoid but it eventually makes you good at vibes. Like Dean's paranoid so Sam tries to discount it, but then in this case, it actually and actively keeps him alive, to the point where you can say he pattern matches quicker by seeing patterns everywhere.
7. bruh everyone mirror Dean, but they try NOT TO. They tie things to Dean, they realized they tied Bobby and Dean together that way but they kept trying to undercut it, to keep it a monster of the week, and undercutting the emotional scene and making it about AMY of all people, which doesn't hit because we got very little sense that Sam cared about her after that one episode. like...Dean, who wants to be a dad deep down just saw his biological kid(who he was half ready to take in, monster and all) die. He's...not doing hot. And they kept undercutting that by bringing up the WRONG PARTS OF THE NARRATIVE(Dean's guilt about amy or his fatalism or whatever). THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE OPPOSITE OF FATALISM.
god I miss Cas, that's gonna snap him out of this I think.

15×10 meta "I don't know what is god and what's not..."
But maybe now we do. Kind of, anyway.
Warning: Destiel and Saileen positive. And somehow this ended up with a lot of Charlie, not that I think anyone will complain about that.
I've been thinking about this since Thursday. Like, one one hand, Dean's "The blood, the sweat, the tears, man. That's us." Was beautiful, specially if we take into account that a few episodes ago he still was all "I don't know what is God and what's not, and it's driving me crazy."
So I rewatched the entire season (that's why only now I have this) and now I will say what is God and what's not.
(I mean, kind of, I think we will never know the true extent of Chuck's manipulation to avoid even more plot holes XD)
So, first:
Mayor plots we know (or I think) were Chuck's:
 The first Apocalypse (Duh)
• Leviathans (I say this bc in one of Chuck's memories, Benny was in the bunker with Dean. Benny means Purgatory, and Purgatory means Leviathans. If the Leviathan are a constant, they probably are part of Chuck's plan.)
• The Mark of Cain (We've seen it like a million times, clearly that's a plot he likes)
• Probably the MoL because it was so bad
The ones we don't know:
• Amara (Like, I do think he didn't expect they would break the curse)
• Jack (I mean, he probably was the culprit Jack died after Micheal took his grace, and that's the reason he ended up soulless. But his actual birth? Idk)
• (Btw I say Chuck's the culprit because I don't understand why Cas would just become human when Metatron took his grace in s8, specially considering que was 100% angel, and he didn't even had a “soulless” problem... I don't know what happened there tbh, he should be kinda soulless? Or whatever. My point is that if an angel 100% can survive having his grace taken, I don't see why a Nephilim (50/50%) would die.)
• Probably AU!Micheal was not part of the plan, because he straight up told them they were just failed drafts. Besides, it was a direct consequence of Jack's birth, and I don't think Jack was part of the plan.
I was about to publish this, but now I have another one. How much of what happens in Heaven is Chuck? Like, we know he doesn't really care for the angels (Ask AU!Micheal), and the main characters are just Dean and Sam. But in this universe, because of Cas, both brothers have been closely related to whatever happens in Heaven. Does that mean Chuck has to intervene there so they don't ruin the story? Probably yes. Honestly I'm dying to know what happened in Heaven with Cas during 15×10 I NEED ANSWERS ABOUT THE ANGELS.
Things that Chuck can't do:
• Like, make someone do anything they don't want in a "mind control" kind of way. He can physically do people do things, like Eileen hurting Sam, but he can't control their mind. If he could, Dean would have killed Jack and nothing of this would be happening in the first place. Individual choices and actions are out of his control.
• He doesn't have power over the Empty, and doesn't know what's happening there. (That means there's no true omniciense)
• (The last point raises the question of how did he brought Cas back so many times. Or Lilith. I'll chose to believe those are continuity mistakes and not that, idk, this Cas is an exact copy of the original Cas and even him doesn't know he's a copy or smth.)
Things that we can deduce are, to certain degree, Chuck's fault.
• Cas constant unjustified absences (This we can assume for 1: "No one even mentions Cas" from Becky about Chuck's writing, and 2: In all the AU we saw as Chuck memories, Cas is never there. Not even mentioned.)
• [Related to the previous point, I think that considering that Cas was in none of Chuck's memories, we must take the fact that he was in almost all the PossibleFuture!scenes (first he was there, then in the car he is mentioned by Sam and Dean, the we had the "Ever since the Mark made Cas go crazy? Ever since I had to bury him in a Ma'lak box?" moment, the next one we can see Dean moving his mouth before getting interrupted by Sam. Considering it was placed next to the prayer scene, we can deduce Dean was praying to Cas. That give us Cas in 4/6 Future moments.) as a sign that this Cas is different to the one in other universes. Maybe our theory that our Cas will be the key to Free Will, as he is special in some way in this universe in a way he isn't in others, will come true.]
• [Although then we need to ask why did Chuck let him live, if he interferes with the narrative]
• Soulless!Jack and Mary's death [Explained before]
• Actually, is possible that most deaths are Chuck's plot.
But in the more particular events, where is Chuck?
In this episode, we got confirmation that the popular headcanon of Charlie making the boys fake credit cards is canon. This ability to have money all the time is important for them not to waste time doing things that 'doesn't help move the plot along' as Garth said.
That could mean that one of the intentions behind Charlie's introduction was exactly that, solve a problem.
And if you think more, Charlie was introduced in a perfect moment and being the perfect character for the job.
Like, we met her when Cas was still crazy, and Dean hadn't really forgiven him, so he kinda was out of a best friend. Enters Charlie, a badass, geeky, nerdy and really cheerful girl. Literally, perfect bff material for Dean. And to make it even better, she was a lesbian, so that automatically cancels any possible sexual/romantic tension that Dean compulsively had with pretty much any female character back then.
[And if I'm right about Chuck not planning Amara's freedom, then Charlie's individual acts of 1: Getting the Book of the Damned and 2: Decodifying it were probably the reason Chuck decided it was her time. Besides, her death pushed Dean to the edge with the Mark.]
All that convenience makes me believe that the people they know do are part of a pre-made plot, but only the meeting. They are only put on the Winchester's way. If we can take something from last episode is that even without their abilities and plot armor, they still have their friends. The relationships they've built are their strength, they are something almost sacred that Chuck can't touch. (As I said, he can't control minds, nor can he control feelings.)
Would you look at that, it looks like Castiel "And maybe Chuck designed the obstacles, but we ran our own race. We made our own move" Winchester (My soul won't rest until someone recognize Cas in the show as a Winchester) was right all along. Shocked.
So, once again, we have everything telling us the most important thing the brothers have is the other people that they love. That is theirs, that is real.
And I also think is important they got that lesson without Eileen and Cas. Because those are the people they love the most (besides each other), yes, but they also are the ones that Chuck have used against them.
Dean's history with Cas has been part of the story, so it was logical that in the middle of his existential crisis, he doubted of their relationship.
And now Sam has confirmation that it's thanks to Chuck that Eileen is back.
Both relationships could feel a little tainted.
With them, it would be more difficult to put aside their doubts. But with good old Garth? He wasn't even in the Possible Future. He's as much as a comfort character as you can get for Dean and Sam. Looking at him all happy and domestic, and yet being by their side when they can't do anything be themselves is exactly what they needed to move their friends and family to the "Non-Chuck tricks" list.
And a little note:
I don't think they just lost their "plot armor", I think Chuck purposely made them average humans. But without Chuck, they wouldn't be average. Dean's been trained to be a soldier since he was 4 years, and maybe Sam had a little bit more of a childhood thanks to Dean, but still he was trained since he was a kid.
And you tell me they can't pick a lock without Chuck's powers? That Sam just runs against everything and falls? Those are things any of us would do, not someone who has been training 30 years more or less.
So no, I do not think they would (will?) be like this when they beat Chuck. Yes, maybe they will be intolerant to lactose, and have cavities and that stuff, but they are still trained, that doesn't just go away.
[BTW I realize half this meta was in parenthesis. Sorry about that.]

She-Ra, The final season
And so it ends, and I have some thoughts about it. Beware of spoilers as usual.
No seriously, I’m gonna spoil the whole endgame. You have been warned.
1) I love how they make good on that interesting new dynamic between Glimmer and Catra they promised at the end of last season. They begin in their usual roles with Glimmer being defiant in the face of evil and Catra trying to work the system to her own benefit but the isolation gets to both of them and they end up bonding in ways they couldn’t on Etheria.
2) Horde Prime is such a great hatable villain. He has this constant theme of invasion going for him. Obviously he invades other planets but he also casually breaches people’s personal space and touches them to show dominance and frequently invades minds and bodies. He really sees himself as perfect and everything else as flawed and useless unless it is as an extension of himself. At the same time, you really get this feeling that he is incomprehensibly old and has been through so much. There is nothing that makes you sympathize with him, but there is this great moment in the second-to-last episode where he does the “I don’t even know who you are” trope to one of the heroes, but rather than being played as a show of arrogance and dismissal it is contemplative. He understands that this hero was an important and dangerous nemesis for him at one point but he is so old and has seen so many heroes stand against him and fail that he just can’t keep track of them anymore.
3)
Tumblr media
ENTRAPTA! You are a married woman! Please contain your thirst for robots.
I kid of course. Entrapta remains my favorite character precicely because she is so unapologetically horny for science. I do think it is good that she makes progress in showing how much she cares about people though, even if she still doesn’t “get” them.
Besides, I know my favorite ship is safe because she would never cheat on Hordak.
Tumblr media
ENTRAPTA!!!!!! KEEP IT IN YOUR PANTS!
4) Adora has my favorite arc this season. I thought her journey was pretty dull in season 4 but they fixed that and then some this time by deconstructing one of the central themes of the heroic narrative, the sacrifice. I can’t think of a story that so openly criticizes the idea of the heroic sacrifice as necessary and noble. It calls it out as something that ultimately leaves the world and the friends the heroes saved poorer for losing such an important part of their lives. “You are more than what you can do for others” is a powerful message and from what I have seen it seems to resonate well with the LGBQT fanbase who often have to hear that they have to give up their love and happiness.
5) They get Catra’s redemption arc going right away which I think is really good because it lets them spend a lot of time on the really important part, which is the villain interacting with the heroes now that the entire dynamic has changed and they have to deal with the fact that they have hurt people in the past. That being said she is very quickly adopted into the best-friend squad and I love the way everyone finds ways of teasing her.
Sidenote: Catra goes through a lot of different looks this season but I kinda think the short hair with only mildly ruffled strands is the best one.
Tumblr media
Yes, I promise.
6) Catra isn’t the only villain who changes for the better because Hordak finally gets with the program. I see a lot of people having trouble with this because “oh he just gets a last-second redemption out of nowhere”, which I disagree with profusely. He doesn’t really get a “redemption” at all. He still changes for the better though, because Hordak’s whole arc isn’t about becoming a better person or fixing the things he broke like Catra’s is. His arc is all about learning to be independent and finally breaking free of his abusive brother/parent/God. Ending up on the side of good is pretty much incidental. And that is ok. Not every villain who changes for the better needs a full on “redemption”
7) I also see a lot of people having problem with Shadow Weaver’s final turn and this one is a lot more understandable, but hear me out. I don’t think Shadow Weaver has ever actually changed all that much since the beginning. People think she is always scheming and manipulating to get more and more power for herself, but I don‘t think that is true. SW is enamored with power, but she has always been about molding it and making people reach their full potential. She really does operate on a twisted kind of parental logic where she thinks she is being helpful, but she is such an awful toxic person that all her “help” only ends up ruining people, as Adora put it. Her sacrificing herself for Adora and Catra to finally reach their peak is perfectly in-character for her, and when she tells Catra that she really is proud of her, she means it, because Catra is finally not standing in Adora’s way. She is a terrible godawful abusive parent right until the end, but it still makes sense that the girls would be sad to see her go. Still, I’m not gonna tell anyone who has a problem with this development that they are wrong.
8) Other than that I think my only criticism is that they really downplayed Hordak’s disability this season. They make reference to his “imperfection” but his chronic pain was a big deal in previous seasons and I wish they hadn’t ignored that so much. Did Prime “fix” Hordak when he reprogrammed him? That sounds like something he would do but still.
9) There is so much drama with all of the side-characters this season and I love it. Spinrella and Netossa became such a compelling couple, but my favorite part has to be where Mermista and Sea-Hawk confirm that they are perfect for each other. She set a boat on fire just to see what was so great about it! That is true love.
10) Honestly, all my ships are sailing. Catradora is the relationship that got me into this series, and not just as a cute ship but the whole friends->enemies->nemesis->lovers journey has been a trip and seeing it resolved in such a powerful scene really caps off the show perfectly. I don’t even care that the plot seems to resolve on the power of love trope. It fits the theme and the characters and that is what truly matters in the end.
Thank you for an AWESOME show Noelle Stevensson, Dreamworks and Netflix.

minachar28 replied to your post “minachar28 replied to your post “If Maddie and Ben never get together...”
I'm gonna point out that "coming onto my post" comment makes little sense on social media. Your post was public for the world to see so getting comments (even those you disagree with) comes with the territory. I looked up #Polymarine and found your post. On to your new post - I can see you point but you also missed some of mine. Bryndie was heavily entwined in the frabric of Siren. From Day 1 there were hints, then clear signs then they officially happened. Now its being dropped like it meant nothing. You seem to mainly be a Raddie fan (I may be wrong) but even they are slowing being put on the back burning. It becoming all about Bryn. I can see with this is all going. Sure Maddie in a interesting storyline with Ben & Ryn for now but how long will that really last? Maddie will be forgotten/left behind/out of the loop before long. As part of the main couple she gets to be a real lead. Bryndie is beautiful & their story can last but only if the writers don't give up on them. Relationships are up & down/not always perfect so the conflict isn't a bad thing but this extra distance will most likely get unnecessary. As for possibly dropping the show - if enough people stop watching then Siren will get cancelled which isn't helping anyone. Ben leaving Ian to drown was messed up but did you missed the point that Maddie would die? That was also a main reason Ben didn't save him which he should have told her instead of making look like it was just about protecting the merpeople. I'm not saying Ben was right but see how the merpeople was gonna be hunted down and enslaved/experimented on/killed. Ben had reasons. I'm all for Maddie having separate things outside of the mermaid stuff but that could still happen with her bring part of Polymarine. Obviously we can disagree but I needed to explain my point. In my 3rd comment I meant without Ben & Ryn. Also meant the Byrndie could last if the writers don't give up on them. Wasn't trying to start an argument just replying back.
You can point out that my post is public and it is and I have no issues with people responding to it, but you can also choose how you respond to it. Being negative on a post where I was trying super hard to be positive and telling me that you think the show is RUINED? Didn’t feel so good. I’m always up for discussions and debates about a show I’m this passionate about, I really am. Just... maybe try to keep it to discussion topics and not plain and simple bashing.
Okay, so responding to this with the perspective of having now seen episode 8, I’m... starting to turn towards the side of “this is total BS, Maddie’s being sidelined and it’s AWFUL and Polymarine may not last and I hate it.” There are quite a few moments in episode 8 that just... very visually represent that difference (Maddie getting a cheek kiss and then Ben immediately afterwards getting a lips kiss, Maddie not standing/sitting next to Bryn at the wedding, etc).
So like... yeah. I mean, you’re not wrong that I’m partial to Raddie over Bryn, for sure, but I did like Polymarine at least equally as much as I liked Raddie. And I didn’t HATE Bryn, they’ve definitely had some cute moments in the past, though I’m liking them less and less as this season goes on because they seem to be getting portrayed as more and more dysfunctional. But I have a whole post somewhere detailing why I think Polymarine perfectly represents the whole theme of balance and how the three of them together work beautifully to represent the two things each of them is always having to balance within themselves and how each of them works to balance the other two. Polymarine obviously does not exist without Ben and I have absolutely loved Ben in earlier seasons and really rooted for him. It’s just this season that they’ve made him less likable which has, in turn, made his relationship with Ryn somewhat less likable, too.
What I think you were missing earlier is that while I guess I didn’t necessarily disagree that there were some bad signs, I was trying REALLY FUCKING HARD to stay positive about it and see it in a better light, in a way that wasn’t indicative of this show I adore becoming a shitshow that drops some spectacular polyamorous rep with a beautiful wlw relationship and sidelines the main Black woman. I really really REALLY did not want to believe this show would do that, I’ve been working SUPER FUCKING HARD all goddamn season to try to come up with theories about why Ryn and Maddie have been getting a lot less affectionate scenes than Ryn and Ben have been getting, about why it was important for Maddie to have her relationship with Robb and (this is what my original post was about) why Maddie being with Robb didn’t actually cancel out the polyamorous rep or the wlw relationship since as far as we’ve been told, Ryn is still dating two people, which makes Polymarine still a polyamorous relationship, even if it’s a V instead of a triangle. And Maddie having feelings for Robb and maybe starting to date him means that Maddie is ALSO dating two people, turning that V into a Z. Or an N. Whichever letter you prefer. Which was UNHEARD of polyamorous representation. So while I definitely love Polymarine, I was not against the show exploring the different ways polyamorous relationships can happen, the different forms they can take.
After episode 8, though, I’m... really despondent. I’m losing some of my faith in this show doing right by us, doing right by these characters. Robb’s gone, Maddie definitely got sidelined in this episode both narratively and visually. None of that spells anything good. It’s like 3am so my mind is coming up with wild conspiracy theories about how some of what we’re seeing are more hallucinations in Ben’s mind, that the season 2 finale wasn’t a one-off, but FORESHADOWING. I’m tired, I’m upset, I’m kinda angry right now, so I’m probably MASSIVELY off-base, but it’s literally the only thread of hope I have left right now so I’m going to hang onto it until the show rips it out of my hands.
As for dropping the show, it didn’t sound like you were getting much out of it and I’m a proponent of not watching shows that don’t bring you joy. It’s not your job to try to keep a show from getting cancelled if you don’t like it anymore, even if other people do. I’ve dropped SEVERAL shows because they weren’t making me happy anymore, so like I said, no judgment on my end if this show just wasn’t doing it for you anymore. Personally, I wasn’t just sticking around for Polymarine or for Raddie, I was sticking around for Ryn and her baby, Ryn and her tribe, for Helen, for Xander, for the environmental message, for the beautiful theme of balance being the key to everything. There was (and hopefully still IS) so much in this show that I love and I 100% would stick around to watch this show for a while probably even if Polymarine stayed a V, or a Z. I might have problems if Maddie got sidelined and removed from Polymarine entirely, but up until this episode, that hadn’t entirely happened. This episode removed almost EVERYTHING that I enjoy about this show from the environmental message (all three of them agreeing to use the sonic cannon despite its known impact on all marine life), the message about balance (either Ben or Ryn has to give up their home to be together or they have to break up and go their separate ways but no in-between option) to Maddie’s role in the narrative and her relationship with Ryn AND Ben to Xander possibly DYING. So quite honestly, if the show continues the way it has in this episode, I’LL probably consider dropping it, because this isn’t the show I fell in love with.
Okay, so addressing your question about if I recognized that Maddie would have died if Ian had been allowed to live. NO. I don’t recognize that because it ISN’T TRUE. Did you forget the whole fact that this was a HALLUCINATION Ben had in which he mischaracterized both Xander and Calvin MASSIVELY and was working on some majorly incorrect information? We were told, point blank, that Ian could not have revealed ANYTHING without some solid physical proof, it’s why he was trying to kidnap Ryn. Without her, his article was DEAD. Had Ian lived, they probably could have forced him to give up his attempts given that they’d just SAVED HIS LIFE. We have NO IDEA what might have happened if Ben had let Ian live. But I HIGHLY doubt that it would have automatically FOR SURE meant Maddie’s death. The whole thing was a nightmare scenario based on Ben’s paranoia and very little else. Ben didn’t have “reasons”. At least, none that were actually REASONABLE. While Ben probably SHOULD have told Maddie about his hallucination, the reason he DIDN’T is because admitting to having hallucinations means he’d have to admit the reason WHY he was having hallucinations: namely, that he re-addicted himself to the Song. Nothing Ben saw in his hallucination is a worthwhile excuse for letting another human being drown when Ben could have saved him. Nothing. It helps us UNDERSTAND why Ben did what he did, sure, because it shows us just how not in his right mind Ben is, how far gone he’s become now that he’s listened to the Song again. But it doesn’t exonerate him or excuse the fact that he killed a man.
I think we have a very different definition of what “being part of Polymarine” means. For me, Polymarine is the relationship between the three of them (at least for now) and the three of them are still connected through Ryn. Just because Ben and Maddie aren’t dating EACH OTHER doesn’t mean that Polymarine isn’t still a relationship that exists, it just exists as a V instead of a triangle, as I mentioned in the original post you replied to and have mentioned in my replies a few times now. Maddie is still dating Ryn and her involvement in Robb wasn’t (for a while) taking her away from the main narratives. She was SUPER involved in the earlier episodes that dealt with the hybrids and the baby. In fact there was an entire episode in which Ben spends the whole time with his parents while Maddie runs around with Ryn, helping her train, helping her read, taking her to the hybrid doctor to deal with the cramps, following her to the ranch to find Meredith, etc. For a while there, in the beginning of this season, it definitely did not feel like Maddie was going to get sidelined just because she needed space from Ben or because they introduced Robb. I have been holding onto that hope those episodes gave me up until now. But while I agree that I’d prefer Maddie have side storylines AND continue to be involved in the main narrative, I think that’s exactly what was happening in the early episodes.
So look, am I starting to believe that all of the people who have been crying out in the tags that this season’s been a sign that Maddie’s going to be sidelined and the show is going to let go of the part that made it the unique and beautiful, might be right? Yes.
Am I still desperately trying to cling to what little hope I have that there’s something we AREN’T SEEING HERE that can turn this around in the 11th hour?
Also yes.

So they unwittingly made this entire film The Tragedy of Ben Solo? Because usually in adventure stories or myths, it’s the hero that dies and gets the memorialized ending by loved ones, it’s the hero that is able to use a great power to save/heal someone in romantic stories. The way it’s described, the climax of TROS just turns Rey into the motivation for Ben’s turn and his death, and even her ending is all about the Skywalkers instead of her. Ben is the active character with the most change.
The sequel trilogy has always been about Ben Solo, and at this point I’ll be blunt and say he’s also its only redeeming quality.
I don’t think I can even read fix-it fic for SW anymore. They said they started the ST on purpose with “this will begin to make things right”? What’s “right” about killing off all of the Skywalkers, sending a warped-ass message about innately good/pure people being the only ones worthy of legacy, and handing their family name off to Rey who’s a surprise Palpatine (which also fucks up TLJ’s message)? None of this is good, none of this is SW, none of this makes sense
it’s fucking mind boggling. They used the exact same trick ROTJ used for Vader’s redemption EXCEPT a father giving his life for his son is thematically appropriate for a fairytale. But when the character in need of redemption IS also the son? And the lover? And you kill him off? it’s a fucking TRAGEDY, not a fairytale. And they kept advertising the movie as “hopeful”. Insulting.
I’m honestly so done with American franchises and male directors. SO DONE. They can’t deliver a good, joyful, uplifting ending to save their lives. They’re so fixated on retribution narratives and their obsession for virginal heroines who *need no man to be happy* or whatever (and apparently get over the death of their soulmate pretty easily, because they’re OH SO STRONG AND PURE AND SELFLESS) is absolutely exhausting and actually kinda creepy. If I could somehow handle GoT because blah blah it’s an adult oriented genre and blah blah d&d fucked up GRRM’s perfectly good story, I won’t tolerate Star Wars pulling this shit on me. They really ruined the OT’s perfect fairytale ending for this. Fuck them.

What do you want to see in a joker sequel? Do you want a sequel? With Joaquin Pheonix
This is... an interesting question, nonnie. And I’m so sorry about the fucking thesis that I’m about to unleash, but hey, I’m an industry hopeful, so I think about this kinda thing a lot.
I mean. Here’s the thing, Joker is in a weird space because I think I could go the rest of my life without a follow-up to what has become my favorite movie of all time and be happy about it. It’s so rare in today’s industry to see such an incredibly well executed, self-contained narrative. ESPECIALLY a pop culture property. The likelihood that it would fall to the usual sequel pitfalls seems incredibly likely (studio pressure and time constraint being some), and to ruin a really good story for that just doesn’t seem worth it to me. I like Joker as the one comic book movie that stood on its own two feet. That didn’t try and force a moral or put its main character into a box, but rather told Arthurs story and allowed you to fill in the blanks about who his character is and what he means. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again: That is worth more to me than a whole decade of Marvel films (I’m not knocking them, but in terms of narrative quality, all the avengers combined will never hold a candle to this single film about one fucking dude).
... but also, I’m never one to say never. Where there’s an idea, there’s a solid 50/50 chance of executing it well or poorly, and that outcome depends entirely on where you focus your efforts in building the narrative off of what you’ve already done. Todd I think knows that as I’m pretty sure he said in an interview that it would have to embolden the themes of the first. Problem is that I don’t think he may know what that means
But I do, because I’m a fucking madman who has a whole notebook full of this shit. So with all that in mind, I have a few critera that I can think of off the top of my head thatTodd and the crew would need to focus on in order to make any sequel to Joker really worth it.
The narrative superposition that is maintained throughout the film that allows for narrow, but free interpretation of the characters within (this kind of stuff that allows you to come to your own conclusions about whether everything that happens in the movie is stuff that the joker made up while in the hospital or really happened, whether he really is thomas wayne’s illigitimate son or not, etc.). It’s positively the film’s best quality and following this up in a way that wouldn’t ruin the air of mystery of the first would be EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. But I believe that if Todd stuck to his guns, didn’t reveal any answers to the original questions we’re left with in the first movie, and makes up NEW questions surrounding Arthur’s charater (and perhaps any other new characters that are necessary for the longevity of this depiction of the batman universe), then it can maintain some of the enigmatic, cinematically roarschach-y kinda quality that the first one had and make the sequel worthy of the name.
I think one of the greatest charms of this film is how heavily reminiscent of films like Taxi Driver and Network and other late 70’s/early 80’s indie flicks it was. But I think it doesn’t necessarily have to stick with those specific inspirations. I’d like to see it go in a different direction (my personal favorite and one that’s inspired a long fanfic of my own being early legal films with an emphasis on moral ambiguity and “the impossible court case” like To Kill A Mockingbird and Inherit the Wind). So another sort of tasteful repurposing of themes and aesthetics from classic films wouldn’t be too out of line, and it would be interesting to see what kind of personality this version of Gotham takes on because of it.
The music. It needs to follow in that period-appropriate tradition that gives a good feel for the person and the place. Hildur would obviously need to come back for the score (I cannot see a complete sequel without her, todd, lawrence sher and Joaquin honestly), but all the little music on the side would need to count just as much. I’ve got my own ideas to this end (in a playlist that I hope I’ll publish eventually), but the feel would have to feel classic but evolved from the previous soundtrack.
This is probably gonna get me a lot of hate, but here it goes: I don’t think Arthur Fleck should be the main character. Why? Well, it all boils down to that air of mystery again. The matter of fact is- this ain’t your granddaddy’s joker, running around like a mob boss and wreaking havoc in gotham for a thrill. This guy is down to earth with deeply rooted emotional motive and method behind the things he did. In order to appreciate his character even more, I would like to look at him from the periphery of another character. To know the depth of his actions not at an emotional distance, but rather at a physical distance. I think someone like perhaps The Riddler would be a good jumping off point for this kind of thing, or perhaps some other classic batman villains renewed in this gritty 80’s indie Gotham. Of course, Joaquin would have to reprise, but with someone else observing his actions he might have enough range to find some new avenues to take with the character. (And honestly, nonnie? I don’t think this one really hardcore falls into absolute sequel critera like the other two. This is only really ONE avenue that a sequel could take. But I can’t come up with all of them in one post.)

Love the beard. So good. 🤤🤤🤤🤤
Someone murder the man whore before I do.
He makes me wanna throw up. And I’m not physically capable of doing that
@rpsocsandcanonohmy. I get where you’re coming from. But I also get where Ben is coming from. Sunbeam did get him abducted. And man slut tried to feed him to sharks. So I do understand both points. Doesn’t mean you’re wrong though
JUST. EXPLAIN. HIS MIND IS BEAST ADDLED
Shoulda let Ben slash hooks throat jay. You’re slipping buddy
Mal’s eating crow
Hopefully he chad suffocates. Then she’s have done one thing that wasn’t completely worthlessly reprehensible
🎶feelings🎶
And it had to ruin it
Te-am work. As plankton says
Proud sister
Boys are back. (With dude and the mutt in tow)

Oh they’re so cute
Poor Doug.
DOUG AND GIL FRIENDSHIP.
So. Update. Might be like Mal. (Definitely loving Ben’s facial hair)
Yawning over chad. So pathetic
Her seat from him douchey mcuseless
Poor Janey
Cats outta the bag
Once again. I kinda understand all points. Yeah Mal shouldn’t have lied. But Uma didn’t really give her and choice. And Evie just kinda assumed. And no one really lets her explain anything.
Hooks still pathetic. Even hurt emotionally I still wanna punch his roger rabbit looking face (Sorry Roger)
Oh dear
Mal. Don’t apologise. You did what you felt you needed to do. And no gives you a chance to explain. Ever.
Yes. You needed to do what you could.
Excellent acting all around as usual
Evie. Look. I love you. Your favourite number seven. But WHY IS IT YOUR SISTERS JOB. WHY DOES EVERYONE MAKE IT MALS PROBLEM
Ha! Evie said it. She said family.
Oh fuck. Taken for granite
More singing.
Monster/story/invincible
I do want to stab Harry in the mouth with the hook
More flashback. Yay(.). Couldn’t they fill out the runtime
Flashbacks. TO THE START OF THE SO G THE FLASHBACK IS FROM. OH FOR FUCK SAKES
More dragon.
Audrey’s performance might make me a vegetarian
How is it not crushed by the claws?
Fire should be green
Yay. Auds dead. Please say yes?
The twins say literally one thing
From magical incantation to vaguely irritating verbal tick. Well alright then
Evie. Why do you sound so sad. It’s a good thing Audrey’s dying. The ultimate price and all that. You should be glad. It’s a good thing
Mal: he’s my father. Ben: shocked face. Me: makes a sound like a boiling kettle
Bye bye facial hair
Die slut
More eating crow
The in laws meet
Exactly hades. Exactly. Knee beast in the dick
God Ben’s so hot.
Bite Adam’s throat out please hades
Should’ve let Audrey waste away. And sent granny to Tartarus to meet her
OH SPARE ME YOUR BLEEDING HEART ROUTINE! I still hate you in a fundamental level
OH FINALLY YOU GERIATRIC BITCH
Nice little family moment
What the fuck is Evie’s dress?
Queen Mal has a very nice ring to it.
Sure you can. You owe them noting. You owe nobody anything
Jay has a pull back braid in his hair. Yay!
“Audrey would be gone”. You say it as though that’s a bad thing
“Insert woody woodpecker laugh”. Fuck you Adam
Compromise. Bring the vks over. And plop Adam Audrey chad anleah on the isle. Sink it into the ocean
Why didn’t Verna bring the barrier down. Oh yeah. Cause then she’d be useful
More singing
At least this takes place in daylight
I still hate harry
Push Harry in the drink please. IM LITERALLY BEGGING YOU
God I love Ben and Doug
Why the Charleston?
I still hate tremaine
Well. Jane. In ZM. You met Mal. She’s Carlos’s mother in this au
Giljay. It’s cute
So Harry makes me ill right upbto the end. Now he’s related to purple and blue
🎶a bitch is in the dog house🎶. And deservedly so
🤮🤮🤮🤮
Sweet little king
Oh boy
Whore has a turkey neck
This is the end. Good movie. With some unneeded bits. I’m gonna change a lot in ZM part three. And both dedications broke me.

now that chuck can’t just skip out on this world with amara, what’s his plan going to be?? we know he’s the Final Big Bad, and dabb said here “it’s not simple, just going for chuck, and a big part of what we’re dealing with in the season is how to do that. at a certain point, chuck will be at full strength, which gives our boys even more problems.” so, when he’s back at full strength, what’s he going to do?
i propose: the Original Ending Rewrite Theory.
to all the people who say that chuck isn’t a good writer because of his comment in 15.02 about the game of thrones ending being “pretty great”, i say: look at his speech at the end of swan song. widely regarded as one of the best speeches in supernatural, it really is a beautiful piece of writing. in case you need a refresher, here it is (and here’s the video too):
“So, what’s it all add up to? It’s hard to say. But me, I’d say this was a test... for Sam and Dean. And I think they did all right. Up against good, evil, angels, devils, destiny, and God himself, they made their own choice. They chose family. And, well... isn’t that kinda the whole point?”
the important part here is “up against [...] god himself, they made their own choice”. at the time, chuck was okay with sam and dean editing his story from inside the story itself. he said to dean and castiel in 4.22 “you guys aren't supposed to be there. you're not in this story.” but then he let them get away with screwing with his originally-planned ending of having michael and lucifer fight. he even brought castiel back from the dead at the end of the episode. he was well aware that tfw changed the apocalypse, and he let them do it. he was fine with them choosing free will.
since then, obviously, things have changed. whether it’s because of his disappointment at humanity (which we saw in 11.20), or some other reason, chuck is obviously much more controlling and involved in his story now. he’s been described by rob at a lot of conventions as a “puppet master”. at jib con 2019, rob said this:
“He, most importantly, he wants his story to be told. So that’s his most important thing. In season 11 that was the most important thing. In season 5, he was all about the story.”
in season 5, he was fine with the story being about two brothers who chose free will over a pre-written destiny. but now, in seasons 14 and 15? that’s obviously not the case anymore. now, he wants them to follow his script.
in the last ride trailer, a voice (presumably becky) says “you can’t do this to the fans [...] it’s awful, horrible, hopeless.” and what could be more hopeless than a rewrite of the original, much beloved, swan song ending? a rewrite in which sam and dean don’t win against god himself, but instead bow to his power as the author of their story, and play the roles he designed for them? if the original run of supernatural (and therefore chuck’s supernatural books, which follow seasons 1-5) was all about defying fate and making your own destiny, then the biggest “screw you” to the fans would be a years-later addition that changes the meaning of the entire story, and retroactively ruins it for the fans.
(side note: this is particularly relevant now, with a lot of authors retroactively adding to stories and changing the original narrative, and having a negative backlash from their fanbase. see: harry potter and the cursed child by j.k. rowling and go set a watchman by harper lee as prime examples of this.)
proof of this in canon so far is sam’s vision in 15.01. i don’t think it’s samifer, because he’s got black eyes, like a demon. chuck was obviously a fan of sam having black eyes, because he says in 5.01 “you went, like, full-on vader. your body temperature was one-fifty. your heart rate was two hundred. your eyes were black.” (coincidentally, this is exactly 10 seasons before 15.01. that doesn’t prove anything, just wanted to point that out because it’s pretty cool!)
so, what if chuck is going way back to the boy king sam arc? i’m not sure how he’s going to get there, but wouldn’t it be the perfect punishment for sam? after standing up to god himself, and shooting him, and weakening him (even if it’s only for a short while) sam eventually goes back to square one and becomes the antichrist character that chuck always intended him to be? it’s especially cruel given sam’s obsession with being “clean” and “worthy” (which chuck has to know about, given how he’s been watching the boys for so long). as the voiceover in the last ride trailer says, it would be a hopeless ending.
in that same trailer, dean says “that’s chuck’s ending? after everything that he has put us through, i’ll be damned if i’m gonna let some glorified fanboy get the last word.” and what do angry fanboy’s often do when they’re not happy with the way a show or book or film ended? they rewrite the ending to what they want. they “fix” things. heck, a lot of rewrite-ending fics are called “fix-it” fics. as chuck says in the trailer “i can do anything. i’m a writer”, showing that he’s fully embraced his role as the author of sam and dean’s story again -- a role he apparently hasn’t taken on since the first 5 seasons of supernatural, when he was playing “the prophet chuck”.
again, in the last ride trailer, chuck says “i can see it now. supernatural, the end. and the cover is just a gravestone that says winchester.” so, clearly, in his new ending, a winchester dies. maybe it’s sam and dean, or maybe it’s just one of them (i can see dean having to kill sam rather than letting him ascend to the throne of hell, and dean’s punishment being a life without sam, with his brother’s death on his conscience. this also fits with a parallel to when chuck himself had to sacrifice amara to save humanity, something chuck is probably bitter about now he kinda hates his creation again?? but this is a really vague theory.)
tl;dr: this is just a really rambling theory about what i think chuck’s new planned ending is. he’s gonna try to force sam and dean to relive a new version of swan song, with boy king sam instead of lucifer, and have the brothers fight to the death for his own entertainment, to “fix” the original ending where they went up against “god himself” and chose family.

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Black Panther (2018)
Tumblr media
Does it pass the Bechdel Test?
Yes, nine times.
How many female characters (with names and lines) are there?
Six (40% of cast).
How many male characters (with names and lines) are there?
Nine.
Positive Content Rating:
Three (though it’s worth reminding that this rating is based on the positivity of the content in relation to the female characters, not in general - there’s some real top-shelf content in here, otherwise. Still a very happy three for the ladies anyway, for that matter).
General Film Quality:
High-end. The commitment to nuanced storytelling is impeccable, grappling with all angles of a complex hypothetical far better than could have been anticipated. This is a movie which never loses sight of its own importance, while also never getting too bogged down in it to be entertaining. Earns every ounce of the hype.
MORE INFO (and potential spoilers) UNDER THE CUT:
Passing the Bechdel:
Nakia gives her condolences to the Queen Mother. The Queen chastises Shuri. Nakia compliments Okoye’s wig. Nakia negotiates entrance to the club with Sophia. Nakia and Okoye conflict over loyalties. Nakia passes with the Queen Mother after Killmonger takes over, twice. Shuri and Nakia go into battle. They pass together later.
Tumblr media
Female characters:
Okoye.
Nakia.
The Queen Mother (technically not a name, but I’m allowing it as a title).
Shuri.
Sophia.
Ayo.
Male characters:
Erik ‘Killmoger’ Stevens/N’Jadaka.
N’Jobu.
Zuri.
T’Chaka.
T’Challa.
Ulysses Klaue.
M’Baku.
W’Kabi.
Everett Ross.
OTHER NOTES:
I’m not sure if T’Challa ruining Nakia’s anti-HUMAN TRAFFICKING mission because he wants her around for emotional support is a very endearing intro for his character in this film...I mean, sure, they rescue the people in the convoy, but presumably there was more to the mission (otherwise Nakia wouldn’t complain that it was ruined), and T’Challa prioritises his feelings over both Nakia’s work, and the lives of all the people it effects. Coulda avoided the negative implications there with just a little fine-tuning in the dialogue.
“Nah, I’m just feelin’ it.” Michael B Jordan has such a great energy about him; he’s very, very convincing, in a role which could have broken the film if it were poorly cast.
Tumblr media
But you know what? I fucking LOVE M’Baku, he’s my personal fave for the movie. That presence. This is an excruciatingly well-cast film (among other virtues).
I’m Hella into that Lion King vibe when communing with the spirit realm, too.
Tumblr media
Erik shoots his unnamed girlfriend for nothing more than the drama of it, and that is not one of this film’s virtues.
Shuri calling Ross ‘coloniser’ is just...so good. There’s a lot about this film that is a reclamation, in big and obvious in-text ways, but there are also these kinds of little impactful choices which contextualise Wakanda’s relationship to the world and its history, and that kind of detailing is the difference between posturing, and playing for real.
The music in this movie? Also great. Traditional African and modern African-American, representing the interweave of themes and ideologies in-story? Fucking gold. They did not skimp on details in putting this movie together with intelligent design, and I am Hella into it.
M’Baku just fucking BARKING at Ross when he dares speak before him is the highlight of the whole film. It’s perfect.
A friend of mine has suggested that there must be a missing scene or two in this movie, wherein the Queen Mother convinces M’Baku to go into battle after all, since as-is he just kinda...changes his mind off-screen and she serves no narrative purpose at all. It’s unfortunate such a linking scene is missing, as it would have significantly enhanced both characters and helped to emotionally underpin the final act of the film, which is comparatively weak.
But anyway, M’Baku is my best dude in this movie. I love a huge man in a grass skirt.
The whole idea that W’Kabi and Okoye have a relationship at all is kinda nonexistent; we wouldn’t know about it at all if she hadn’t called him ‘my love’ that one time. Coulda beefed that up better, i.e. at all.
“Bury me in the ocean, with my ancestors that jumped from the ships, because they knew that death was better than bondage.” Michael B Jordan delivered every aspect of this character with such raw power and sincerity, y’all. He hits it straight home.
Tumblr media
It goes without saying that there was a lot of pressure for this film to be good: a big-budget superhero action movie, part of the most lucrative cinema franchise in the world right now, taking on an afro-futuristic setting with an almost exclusively black cast? The potential for Black Panther to come off as little more than lip service paid to representation, ‘too PC’, lacking the guts to acknowledge the breadth of the racism that inevitably informs it, perhaps even falling dangerously toward racist cliches of its own...there is no other film of its kind, and as such, Black Panther could not escape being judged as more than an individual story on its own, as a representation of an entire continent’s worth of people and culture and what they could bring to an industry which has made an aggressive point of shutting them out in the past. The pressure was well and truly on to provide not only financial success put also critical acclaim, and boy oh boy, did they rise to the occasion or what?
Tumblr media
The centrepiece of Black Panther’s success is Michael B Jordan as Erik Killmonger, striking a precise balance between the heat of well-deserved fury, and the chilling calculation of his revenge. Killmonger’s rhetoric is compelling, and it is the meeting point of the film’s threads, of Wakandan tradition, of the country’s privilege in the midst of colonial oppression and the dire morality of its secrecy, of the call of the wider world and the determining of one’s place within it. It’s vitally important that Killmonger makes sense, right up until he doesn’t - a good villain should always feel like someone you could almost follow, if only they weren’t taking things that one step too far - narratively, this is in an important pitch, but it’s also vital for the context of the viewing audience, the acknowledgement and the validation of that rage at injustice (without which, the film would come off as pandering to white guilt), but without the promotion of violent eye-for-an-eye solutions. Killmonger’s anger is never condemned, only the actions he perpetrates in the name of that anger; the viewer is forced to acknowledge the reality that made Killmonger what he is, but without being encouraged to forgive; only to understand.
Tumblr media
I am hardly the first to observe that it is Nakia, not T’Challa, who represents the foil to Killmonger’s ideology, recognising and stirring to action at the injustice’s wrought upon the African people, but seeing in Wakanda the potential to offer unprecedented assistance rather than the opportunity for the oppressed to become the oppressor. The film is populated with character counter-balances, and it validates each perspective (while also illuminating shortcomings) to enhance the overall narrative, rather than equivocating too strenuously to make any point; Nakia values people like Okoye values her country, and while Nakia is right that blind patriotism fails the country if it allows tyranny, the strength of Okoye’s conviction is exactly what inspires the loyalty of those who follow her in the protection of Wakandan values; while Shuri ‘scoffs at tradition’ and leans entirely on the unending machine of technological progress, M’Baku and his people are safeguarding traditional practices and keeping ancient knowledge alive, which saves T’Challa when there’s no tech around - by the same token, without the protective blanket of technological progress, the Jabari would not be free to live as they do. There is good sense in the perspective which every character brings, and all of them are required in symbiosis to achieve a full picture of cultural identity.
Tumblr media
In that broad conversation of identity and place in the world, if there’s one weak link, it’s the Black Panther himself, T’Challa. Not that he’s a weak character or that Chadwick Boseman is a weak actor - it’s just that he’s being thoroughly outplayed by all around him. It’s a good thing in regards to how well-cast the movie is and how it fleshes out its supporting players (in spite of the missing pieces pointed out in the notes above); in an overall-lesser film, the lead being the least compelling character - and especially with such a powerfully-constructed antagonist opposite him - could be a crippling flaw, but as-is Black Panther is pulling out enough stops to get away with having an under-sold Black Panther at its head. That, really, is a testament to the power of the story, and the work being done by everyone involved to tell the tale with tact, with dynamism, with all the colour and flavour the white-washed film industry has been denying all this time. We could talk about its flaws, sure, but there doesn’t seem to be much point - none of them are fatal, none are even particularly egregious, and the achievements of the movie far outweigh any quality blips along the way. Black Panther is a measured, sensitive triumph, and there’s a part of me that - in the best of ways - almost forgets that I’m watching a Marvel movie, a cash-grab - sure, they want to make money out of it, but this feels above all like a passion project. Passion like this, so fully-realised, I am not inclined to fault.

Elevator Pitch
I had a blast watching this film. I came into it with a bit of skepticism, mostly due to the enthusiastic marketing leading up to it and because of the genre, but primarily I had an open mind. I hadn’t looked into who had written or directed it (it must have come up in the endless trailers I had seen, but somehow I didn’t retain it) and I’m glad I didn’t. More on that, later. So, as you can see above, almost every aspect of this film I felt was well above average. It grabbed my attention at the very beginning, and as it established its rules of what it reveals to the audience vs. what it reveals to the other characters, I was hooked. And then, at the culmination of the first act it gives the audience a piece of information that you would never expect from a film like this. Suddenly, you’re off the rails of ‘formula’ and in uncharted territory. Everything is called into question, and I went from hooked to RIVETED. And the best part is that this film follows through on the expectation, it delivers on it’s delightful premise. It should probably go without being said, but you definitely want to experience this film once without knowing whodunit. So, if you haven’t seen it already, stop reading and go see it right now before you read something on social media that ruins the mystery of first viewing.
Analysis
Rian Johnson is now solidly on my radar. I was not aware of him when I saw “Brick”, and I thought “Looper” was a pretty mixed bag. I’m no huge fan of the new Star Wars films, so I’d kinda written him off. But with this film he’s really back in his element. It makes sense, now that I’ve looked at his IMDB closely, that the writer/director of this also made “Brick”. It actually makes me want to see if I can find the screenplays for both “Looper” and “The Last Jedi” and see if there was a substantial degradation from outside interference as those stories made their way from page to screen. I am very impressed with how Johnson has managed to make this story feel simultaneously super tight, but also as if anything could happen. It’s a real testament to solid writing. There are so many elements of reincorporation and red herrings to make the watcher feel intelligent just for paying attention and following along.
<Minor Spoilers from this point on> I think the most interesting thing about this story is that it is entirely comprised of characters who experience flat arcs. No one fundamentally grows or changes meaningfully over the course of the film. Instead, the source of tension is entirely in the manipulation of information and how close (or seemingly close) the characters play their hands to their chests. Through the course of the story the characters learn each others’ true colors, and it is done in such a satisfying way. The film works entirely on how it reveals the truth to the audience, doling it out piece by piece. It lets you fill in the gaps in information with assumption so you don’t realize you’re fooling yourself while watching it, even while the movie is telling you that the mystery most of the characters are pondering is functionally non-existent.
Ok, actually, that might be “the most interesting thing to a writer.” The objectively most interesting thing, I think, is the Point of View. I went into the film assuming that either the detective(s) would be the protagonist and POV character, or it would be a selectively omniscient POV, with all characters being equally suspect. However, the film does something far more unorthodox, and still somehow manages to maintain utmost suspense and keep you drooling over every morsel of information AND it still pull off a big reveal at the end. Very, very impressed with the creativity of this decision and how the execution doesn’t take away anything for having gone down that road.
There were a few interesting pieces of framing and resonant transitions. Mostly the editing and cinematography went largely unnoticed (which is the sign of “merely” good editing) and took a back seat to the writing and acting. This film is essentially half comedy, half thriller. Both the stories and the characters are very amusing and I found myself laughing out loud often. However, the performances manage to maintain the serious and dramatic elements of the story as well, so the shifts in tone and absurd moments of comedy don’t completely undercut the narrative tension. The film even pokes fun at itself and the silly premise of the whole thing at several points, and it’s performed and cut around in such a way that it only serves to keep you invested. At one point, I was reminded of a similar moments in this same year’s “Parasite” and “The Lighthouse,” which also juggle comedy and suspense in equal measure. 2019 is going to go down as having been a great year for tonally complex, dramatic/suspenseful comedy thrillers. And, this one, in particular, I am very happy to recommend. Don’t miss it.
