EP Review: Natalie Cressman & Ian Faquini - An Old Fashioned Christmas

Recorded on Dec. 24, 2022, by two “Jews who love Christmas,” Natalie Cressman & Ian Faquini’s An Old Fashioned Christmas EP turns secular holiday music sideways while proving the adage that giving is better than receiving as all proceeds benefit the Colorectal Cancer Alliance and Eastern Virginia Medical School Hope’s Clinic.

The four-song EP is best on the instrumental versions of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz of the Flowers” from “the Nutcracker,” which the duo transform into a samba for two. This is where Cressman’s trombone and Faquini’s acoustic guitar shine brightest and illuminate the warm feeling of the season in ways words cannot.

Cressman sings “I’ll be Home for Christmas” and the title track to Faquini’s accompaniment. And while these arrangements eschew the aural clichés that permeate so much December music, they also remind the listener that - in Cressman and Faquini’s case - less singing is more musical glow.

The charitable aspect of the release has special resonance for Cressman, whose Trey Anastasio Band mate James Casey died of colon cancer earlier this year.

“Let’s honor my friend James’ memory by making a difference in the fight against colon cancer,” she said in a statement.
