more people need to be aware of the term alterous attraction (a desire for a close emotional connection with someone, but it's not completely romantic or platonic) and use it instead of calling everything a qpr. because by calling everything a qpr you are turning that term into a label instead of what it actually is - an umbrella term for many non conventional types of relationships.

For me being in a qpr lately is like. No we're not dating. Yes this is my boyfriend isn't he great and lovely and handsome aren't I lucky. No I don't want anyone to mistake us for romantic partners. I saw your post on alterious attraction being the term for what most people call qprs - but if that’s called alterious attraction then what are some other examples of things in the queerplatonic umbrella term? I’m genuinely asking, I’d like to know so I can know more about what else a qpr can mean

ty for the question :D genuine questions are great

firstly. there are many forms of attraction. ones society focuses on are romantic, platonic, sexual and familial. but! there are more! some include alterous, aesthetic, sensual, exteramo, emotional and intellectual. i dont think this is an extensive list but at the moment im personally not aware of more. this means a qpr can include any combination of those forms of attraction !

secondly. a qpr can include many different types of actions by the people involved in it. this can include holding hands, calling each other bf/gf/partner/etc, valuing them as their "main" relationship (as in how people prioritise their romantic partner), hugging, having sex, moving in together, raising a child together, etc etc. once again this is not an extensive list. you don't have to do any of these things in a qpr but they can be involved in any combination.

thirdly. a qpr was initially designed to be an umbrella term for whatever way the people in the qpr wanted to define their relationship. but this also extends to if they dont want to define their relationship/the forms of attraction that are experienced in the relationship. a qpr can simply be a term to say this relationship is queer and not easily explainable/doesnt want to be defined by terms.

"QPRs and other non-romantic committed relationships are not inherently amatonormative because there existence challenges amatonormativity" and "the way that some people frame QPRs as inherently more than friends is recycling amatonormative rhetoric like 'they must be in a romantic relationship or at least a QPR because friends don't do that' and is no more helpful" are statements that can co-exist.

There are phrases like "romantic relationships for aros" that completely miss the point of QPRs and frames it like aros need to make up for not experiencing romantic attraction (at the same level as allos). Ignoring the way that some people treat QPRs and other non-romantic committed relationships as a stand in or a substitute for romantic relationships is ignoring the hurt this causes non-partnering people.

Notice the nuance in what I'm saying. I'm not saying that QPRs are amatonormative. I am saying that the way some people talk about them is. Also notice I'm not talking on an individual level, this isn't about people who feels their qpps are more important than their friends. I firmly believe everyone has the right to choose what relationships are important to them and how important they are. I am talking about people who make generalising statements that do a disservice to the point of QPRs and other non-romantic committed relationships and harms non-partnering people
