By hair alone we can see a timeskip here. Love Ekko's outfit. Vi's simpler style with just a bit of Piltie chest armour gives me hope that she transitions away from being a Piltie Enforcer and more of a Vander style character, trying to mediate.

My only criticism of this is that we now have 2 options: Either Vi is entering her goth era and is actively dyeing everything sloppily so that bits of Pink remain, or she has always been black haired, and has been dyeing her hair AND eyebrows pink her whole life, even as a child.

I get that it could be a cultural thing parents do, as my friend En suggested. I'd like this, if it weren't for the fact she was in stillwater for YEARS and I don't see them providing pink dye and a nice setup to bleach and dye safely...

There's also fucky things going on with the Arcane. We're told it's "waking up", which is curious because I was assuming mages across Runeterra were using the Arcane lots for their own magic, so very happy to learn more about it.

I'm pretty amazed that we have seen Zero Mel and Zero Jayce, and just 2-3 frames of hinted Viktor. Nice to see he'll go through with the transformation, but I'm curious as to why they're keeping the jeyvik divorce era so out of promo. Some of my friends feeling very edged right now.

Wondering if this is baby Powder flashbacks, or if we're going to get little kids getting dyed blue in celebration as we see adults do when they team up with her. I suspect if this is a kiddo who wanted to be blue like Jinx, this will be used as a parrallel, with them being caught in an attack that harkens back to the bridge.

I'm thinking of the leak of Claire and Carmy's argument.

I'm wondering if the end of the 3rd season's song "Disarm" by Smashing Pumpkins will give us a clue - at least what the argument will highlight and the theme of season 4.

I think that's the moment- the argument it will reveal the truth of Carmy and Claire's relationship.

If I think about the end of the second season and the song that plays. Half a world away by R.E.M. the lyrics that end with Sydney go it alone foreshadows and tells us about season 3 which starts with Carmy saying I left you alone. (May I had based on that song alone I was about to predict the 3rd season).

But back to the ending of the season 3 song.

Season 3 ends with the song disarm- lyrics:

Giving us a hint to the 4th season. This song is quoted by Billy Corgan as:

Season 4 will explore Carmy's issues with Donna, shedding light on Claire and Carmy's relationship and its core truth. It was an idealized version of what he didnt have his mother and one moment will show just how he's trying to workout his relationship with his mom through claire. How he was dating someone who has versions of donna and idealized versions of Donna carmy never got to experience.

This repeat of donna was outlined in the network script but not the show itself. This claire and carmy relationship in the show is insidious. It's not obvious she resembles donna except for her actions and the camera angles and she's also the happy- "nice" idealized version of donna that donna plays but shows her true face eventually.

It's like the song and how he idealizes a childhood- a teenage love that he never had. But realizing in season 4, like the song's synopsis, his choice in changing- in breaking that cycle of relationships that resembles his relationship with Donna.

This song is about him resolving a cycle that he made the mistake of repeating things so he can move on.

My theory on the argument shedding light of claire- it will probably happen on the night of Tiffany's wedding. They either get back together briefly, so he's Claire's plus one – probably one date to try it again – or he's Richie's plus one.

This show loves parrallels- the argument between claire-carmy-richie will resemble this scene:

Donna yelling- Carmy dealing with her anger- all of it with Richie in the middle just watching not cutting in- but who knows maybe he has changed and will step in when Claire argue with carmy- listening to disarm it's about breakin cycles- changing and Richie will do the thing he's never done with Carmy he's going to stop the argument from escalating or at least he'll try to.

Another clue of a possible parrallel: we get clues throughout the episode fishes that donna is connected to claire. Keep in mind, after the scene with Donna yelling at Carmy to move the pot, we dive into Claire—an idealized relationship Carmy never had.

After the scene with Carmy freaking out about Claire, Richie tells Tiffany about hooking Carmy up. Tiffany is surprised because from what she knows of Claire, she's so nice.

Let's talk more about that nice thing that tiffany says...because it appears through 2x06 fishes.

With the berzattos. Things and people just can't be nice. The berzattos are both kind and agressive. If claire is a bearzatto- then she has the same traits in that household. Probably being nice is not what Claire is- not fully at least.

Why this will happen the night of tiffanys wedding? Because tiffany and richie talk about claire and carmy.

And all tiffany knows is what claire said about the situation.

There's going to be another theme similar to seasons 2 and 3, where Richie and Tiffany are the ones discussing or observing Claire and Carmy's relationship with the awareness of repeating cycles. But it's not just Carmy repeating the cycle of being like Donna; it's also his relationships resembling Claire mirroring Donna.

Because from the conversation with Tiffany and what she was told about Carmy, Claire throws pity parties like Donna.

Sorry, but Claire is having a pity party over what Carmy said while he was having an existential crisis in the fridge.

Claire annoyed with the question are you okay? Yeah similarities as it's been discussed here.

Now that Carmy has faced Chef David, as Jimmy mentioned, he has to confront it head-on. Carmy will begin to see the reality and let go of the idealized versions of his mother. He will see the truth about their relationship, which will lead him to end things that no longer serve him.

Apologizing to those he's hurt the right way carmy is going to be able to smile and show the tenderness in his heart. He'll have the courage to change and no longer carry things and people from his mother. He'll break a cycle.

Now if that argument is about syd? About carmy lying - about not doing anything with sydney?

The climax of the argument: Clairebear is going to try to make Carmy say the words "I love you" just to prove something. just as Donna makes him say the words..

Remember Donna is coming to the wedding too. Both Claire and Donna he'll have to face them, and Claire and Donna being in the same room together will make the resemblance even more obvious.

I was looking at the designs for your parrallel synthesis AU,and I noticed Cross has a star pin too?(I made a thing to show what I am talking about but got a biiit carried away)

uh,just asking out of curiousity, and I couldn't really find the answer you mightve already said something about this. Sorry if you've already mentioned this ;///;

I've seen a couple of people ask about this, so I thought I'd clear some things up! (not me forgetting I haven't posted most of this info yet--)

So! The star pins were made by Ink and were originally given to the other two Stars sometime during their early team days, as a symbol of their friendship. It later on became a symbol of the Stars themselves.

The bone brooches, on the other hand, were given by Nightmare to his gang as a symbol of loyalty; their loyalty to him and in turn, himself to them. Each of them got it at different times-- when they were officially recognized as part of Nightmare's gang.

At some point post-truce, Cross starts actively helping the Stars out on missions from time to time because of how busy they get. He is eventually named an 'honorary Star' and is given the star pin.

So yeah! Cross is still a part of and lives with the gang, but he helps out the Stars from time to time and that's why he has the pin.

(There's three other characters that also have both a pin and brooch-- Pyrite, Error, and another character I haven't introduced yet. Error technically doesn't own the pin and brooch themselves, but I'll talk more about him in his own post.)

Stranger Things 5 Episode Titles - Reactions & First thoughts about them.

So here are the episode titles for Stranger Things 5, they don't give much away in and of themselves unless you've probably been like completely into set pictures & possible leaks which I have not, so don't bring that over here!

Some of them sound a bit corny like "The Rightside Up", it's so Reddit-ish and uninspired, ugh... 🙄 Whatever that may mean, new place, real world, The Upside Down changing into something, whatever else... For the time being, I have no idea.

And using "The Vanishing Of..." again feels a bit... tacky but given they are going to explain and go back to what Will experienced in 1983 more clearly, they might explain the weird elements of his dissapearance compared to what other characters experienced after that with whoever or whatever may dissapear. Though it won't be a vanishing to me, a missing is more accurate to what any character or multiple characters may be facing this season since compared to Season 1, they have more of an idea of what's actually going on. Which is why it feels a bit tacky to me.

"The Crawl" has already been explained by everyone already in the fandom, which is probably referring to a dungeon crawl in Dungeon & Dragons, whatever that may lead them into. Possibly metaphorical implications too but I'll leave that for another time.

Some other titles are interesting though like "Sorcerer" which almost sounds vindictive to me for some reason. It's episode 4 so trust that we are going to get the launching main plot points for the rest of the season in that episode, just like with all the other seasons, after the dramatic ending point of episode 3: "The Turnbow Trap", no idea what that is, sorry. "Shock Jock" episode 5, same thing, no idea.

And "The Bridge" as well, but for the moment I have no idea what that may be about. It could mean so many things like a bridge to the Upside Down, maybe how the bigger portal in the middle of Hawkins is called by the characters, it could be something related to a platform, who knows... I would like a tragic bridge moment under the rain but that's just me projecting my drama bias & wants on this episode which is probably not going to about anything like that. It could be both but I think it's likely going to be the former.

However, this episode becomes interesting in the context of the one that comes right before it: "Escape From Camazotz" which is Episode 6, I will elaborate on this further down the line when I actually get to post my posts I've written but Episode 6 in ST1 & ST3, given that ST5 is likely going to parallel those before parralleling ST2 & ST4, is likely going to be the "big revelations episode" of that season which usually reveals what's been going on this whole time during the season and Episode 7 gives us more context and explanation to understand it fully while setting up the final episode with those explanations. It's usually also the episode where all the characters reunite and makes sense of what they've learned or discovered throughout the season.

In ST2 & ST4, it's not the same obviously and is a bit more loose and complicated around that part of the season. They parallel with themselves but not exactly but overall, that structure is present in Episode 7&8, with Episode 7 largely being a revelation episode for those 2 seasons just not done the same way as ST1 & ST3 and also not exactly similar with how ST2 & ST4 parallel each other. ST2's episode 7 being largely a side story centered around El which answers questions only for her characters, ST4's episode 7 is largely tied to the bigger plot points of that season with the important element of the Numbers being the main element of those episodes. However it's in ST2's Episode 8 that we learn more about elements of the main plot of that season while ST4's Episode 8 is more similar to ST1 & ST3 in it's purpose but the characters don't all group up or are aware of what's exactly going on during the story.

Anyway just to say that Episode 6 is likely going to be an important episode with Episode 7 being the conclusion of that while setting up the final episode. However, given it's the final season, I could see the Duffers saving some revelations for the last episode just like Episode 9 of ST4.

As for the "Camazotz" part of it all, well, it depends on which inspiration they're going to use since Camazotz, which is basically a bat god, has been used in so many stories now that it could be referencing so many things. It could be an entity, it could be someone, it could be a creature, it could be a place, it could even be a program or a weapon... Just know that given the elements that are linked to that name, it's probably something bad.

I kinda wished for more episodes because I just don't see how they could pull off a satisfying ending for everyone and everything with only 8 episodes but I'll have to settle for that at the moment.

Remember that the titles can change though, like with ST2 & ST3, probably not all of them but some of them.

Well, here it is, day by day we are coming closer to the last season. Hoping it turns out well for the most part but we'll see. 😉

Another hidden HT3 scene inspired by reading the novelization earlier this year! Thought it'd be fun to Parrallel Drac saving Ericka and her surprise at that with Ericka saving Drac. Especiallh since...well, Drac's the leader of the monster community and his pack. He's spent much of his time taking care of everyone else. So having someone else - a HUMAN especially - risk their life to save him, I think he'd be really touched by it. It's something they didn't really get to explore in the finale, and I wanted to play around with that.

Yes so:

Joseph is one of the most famous prophets of the bible, primarily interpreting dreams. After having caught the eye of the Pharaoh, joseph interprets his dreams particularly one which had been disturbing him for days, a dream about cows. Seven fat cows had been grazing peacefully for a while, when seven skinny cows came up out of the river and ate them, but disturbingly stayed skinny. I've been thinking about this a lot recently in relation to yj, particularly as this dream was interpreted as prophesising a famine over Egypt. I'll explain my thoughts on this more clearly in another post

Second of all, nat and javi. The choice between killing nat and letting javi die is similar to the choice between killing joseph and selling him into slavery. Ofc the yj and the 12 brothers do this for very different reasons but comforting themselves by choosing a "more merciful" option under the guise of being given a sign is something I find striking between the two situations.

I might be delusional with this one but one of the most shocking things in joseph's story is that its not enough to sell him into slavery, but the brothers dip his special coat, a symbol of his optimism and individuality in blood to prove to his father that he's dead. When javi goes missing, nat does the same thing to prove to travis his brother is dead. Despite nat doing this to help travis cope with what she thinks is javi's death she, like the brothers feels guilty in this deception, which is why she is furious when lottie still says javi is alive. The act of lying about someone's death to a loved one kills even the memory or the hope that person might have left in their wake. This is especially interesting in the light that nat will later let javi die, and the brothers have already sold joseph into a life of misery.

Another parallel; to test if the brothers have changed since their betrayal, joseph doesn't reveal who he is to the brothers after twenty years apart and instead decides to challenge them. After inviting them to feast with him, he plants his golden cup in benjamin's sack. When it is time for the brothers to leave, he stops them, accusing them of theft. When benjamin is caught with the cup, the brothers vouch for him, and joseph decides they've changed and forgives them. And while this ending neatly swerves the catastrophe which would have occurred had the brothers not changed, it also shows some similarities between javi and benjamin which make this especially interesting. They are both the youngest, viewed as the baby of the group and more kind and individualistic than the others. Which makes this part of the biblical story the complete opposite of the corresponding episode of yj as where the girls sacrificed their youngest to eat, the brothers refuse to do this once they have eaten and are satisfied.

Joseph/the wilderness inviting 12 starving people to feast. At a price.

And of course being jacob/the wildernesses favourite and thus being given a special coat to signal status.

05/06/2022 - Day 2

We wake pretty early after the Château was beaten within an inch of its life after a heavy rain storm which passed in the middle of the night.

Meeting the team and the rest of the tour guests at the front of Château, Keith briefed each vehicle individually on today’s agenda and the importance of these locations.

The Longues-sur-Mer battery

Omaha Beach

Pointe du Hoc

Maisy Battery

La Cambe German War Cemetery

The Longues-sur-Mer battery We use mostly paved roads until we reach Manvieux, here we traverse unpaved roads parrallel to the coast overlooking the British channel and arrive at our first point of interest Longues-sur-Mer battery. The battery is a Huge, preserved WWII gun installations, built by the Germans to defend France from sea invasion. It was part of Hitlers Atlantic Wall defences consisting of four rapid firing 152mm navy guns, each housed in large concrete enclosures. The site also includes a fire control post, ammunition stores, defensive machine gun posts and accommodation for the soldiers. The battery is actually located between Omaha and Gold beach which made it a massive threat to the Allied landings. Because of this, the area was heavily bombed on the night before D-Day. This was followed by a naval bombardment in the morning. Although the bombing did not cause much damage to the guns it did destroy the phone line linking the fire control bunker to the guns which severely disrupted the batteries ability to engage with the Allied ships that eventually knocked the guns out of action during a duel in which no Allied ship was damaged despite the battery firing around 170 rounds. On the 7th of June the major responsible for the battery surrendered to the British with 184 men. Gravel paths make access easy from the gun enclosures all the way to the coast line vantage points. Omaha Beach 18.5km west is the infamous Omaha Beach which was part of the D-Day Operation 'Overlord'. I could bang about this place for ages as it's such an important piece of the D-day puzzle. But i'm sure readers are already familiar of what happened here, so i will talk about what is here now... and you wouldn't think it was a place of a blood bath where Americans (1st Army, 5th Corps) suffered roughly 2,400 casualties. White sandy beaches and apart from the traffic noise the sound of waves crashing on the break on the beach was tranquil.We get chance to have a quick bite to eat before we head over to another location made famous by the Americans. One last thing to note is a white house nessled under the cliff, this house managed to survive the naval bombardment and Ally landings, it can be easily found as the owners have a picture of the house on D-day next to there letter box. Pointe du Hoc Not what i expected and though i went with zero expectation it is how i can describe as suprising. Prior to this trip inpreparation i had watched a documentary / read some articles of what is described as the most dangerous mission of D-Day and where the first American Forces on D-Day accomplished their mission objectives. The 2nd Ranger Battalion led by Lieutenant Colonel James E. Ruddler were tasked with assaulting the battery on D-Day to silence the guns, protecting Allied ships and soldiers on the beaches below from artillery fire.

Today the site remains cratered from the aerial and naval bombardment prior to the Rangers assault and features a memorial and museum dedicated to the battle. Many of the original fortifications and bunkers remain which you can access as well as the edge of part of the cliff. Given we are attending a around the anniversary of D-Day, an American ceremony was taking place attended by the new generation of US service men and women, as well as some vet's which was awesome to see.

Maisy Battery

The BF4x4 team always have something up there sleeves and it was the Maisy Battery and this was annouced over CB radio whilst driving through rural normandy. I would be very suprised if many people would know about Normandy's best kept secret where you can walk through 2km of original German trenches and explore their WWII bunkers. The Maisy Battery is a group of World War II artillery batteries that was constructed in secret by the German Wehrmacht near the French village of Grandcamp-Maisy in Normandy. British military historian Gary Sterne rediscovered Maisy Battery in 2004, after he had found a hand-drawn map in the pocket of a US Army veteran's uniform he had bought. The battery was about 1.6 km inland marked on the map as an "Area of high resistance".

The battery had been recorded as the second highest D-Day target in the Omaha Sector group of fortifications, but the exact location had been lost from later records. Using the old map, Sterne was able to locate a bunker entrance amongst the undergrowth. He (Sterne) then investigated further and found additional fortified buildings, gun platforms, and a hospital. Over 3 kilometres of trenches were uncovered and apparently there's still more to discover with time and permissions. Making this a little Land Rover related after enjoying the site i saw another defender parked up, a swiss TD5 110 Hicap which would be the definition of 'overlander spec' unfortunately i didn't get the oppurtunity to meet the owner(s) but had a good nose around. Make this location one to visit if you are in area as it’s really interesting and there are also a collection of WW2 guns and vehicles to view.

La Cambe German War Cemetery

I wouldn't say saving the best till last in this situation and like i had mentioned on our first BF4x4 trip (WW1) you don't see too many German cemeteries. Whether it be Allie or German, cemeteries are a place of reflect and appreciation. Though the enemy, these boys and men lives were needlessly cut short, what makes it worse is the value of these individuals post death.... forgotten and it took the families of the fallen to get this site erected. La Cambe was inaugurated in September 1961. Spread out over 7 hectares and located close to the American landing beach of Omaha, 25.5 km north west of Bayeux. It is the largest German war cemetery in Normandy where 21,222 German soldiers are buried. In fact, the mass burial mound holds the remains of 207 soldiers whose names were never discovered.

This ends Day 2 of our D-Day tour, we retreat back to the Château where we join the BF4x4 team to take advange of the fine dining offered as well as on the house calvados... which i still don't like.

Tomorrow marks the anniversary of D-Day and we don’t have a clue what is installed for us.

Romantic or platonic rivalry between Sonic the Hedgheog and Jet the Hawk?

Imagine: Platonic Yandere Sonic the Hedgehog & Jet the Hawk (Rivalry)

Being stuck between these two is parrallel to that of a never-ending game of tug of war. Whilst Sonic is the more humble of the two, both can & have been proned to allowing their ego to get the better of them on many occasions, including with you.

Both refuse to be second in your life & are quick to call each other's flaws to ensure you view the other in a negative light. Jet boasts about his adventures out around the globe while collecting riches after riches, Sonic talks fondly of days either spent peacefully relaxing under the shade of a tree or of protecting the innocent from any & all forms of evil.

The competitiveness between the two amps like a candle to a blaze when regarding their importance to your life. Not a day, hell even an hour, will go by without these two arguing & seeking to prove that they are the superior to the other whenever they cross paths.

Sonic is brisk when stopping the hawk at his attempts to bribe you with the promise of riches, claiming that he shouldn't be tricking you & pointing that the treasure hunter may have ulterior motives, yet Jet is just as fleet-footed to respond of the hedgehog's periodic speech of perpetual freedom to you & referring to him as a hypocrite.

Jet views zero issues nor concerns when having his team lend him a hand, in mainly convincing you that he is a better choice than Sonic. The blue blur has no desire in involving his friends in the rivalry unless provoked to otherwise, though no matter the outcome, Tails & Wave question their reasonings for wanting a title in your life that they both made up, & with Wave smacking Jet on the head.

Passive-aggressive jabs from Jet turn to full out threats the moment you leave the vicinity, while initially catching him off guard, Sonic grows indifferent to mildly amused at said actions. Jet is not above insisting that the blue hero has threatened him &, if questioned of the legitimacy of his statement, sticks to his story until either Wave forces him to confess or you catch him being arrested to Sonic.

Whenever Sonic clings to you for pets or rubs, the hawk snickers & jabs the hedgehog for his lack of professional adequacy. If you were to ever bring up his own moments & acts of lack of professionalism, Jet shuts your words down stating that he atleast has them to begin with & this can & has led to yet another argument.

Only Friends Backstories and Secrets

I don't do this usually but this show is making me insane so here it is, an Only Friends Theory.

My personal theory is that every main character (not sure if this applies to our lesbians yet, too early too tell) has 1 solo backstory detail and at least 1 or 2 relationship backstory detail to uncover. We already know some of them, but some are still a mystery. I have some theories. The biggest is the Mew-Boston one.

I'll go in order

Top

Solo Backstory = Childhood trauma (almost died in a fire) + Insomnia (Can't sleep alone) + Possible drug problem??

Top-Boston = They fucked once, obviously

Top-Sand = This one is still a mystery but there is something there, drug delear? Ex hook-up? Top hired used to hire him to sleep with him (like in the same bed not for sex - or for sex we don't know). For now there is too many possibilities.

Mew

Solo Backstory = I have no idea, but there is something. There is a dark spark in that man eyes, I don't know what it means, but it's there.

Mew-Boston = Leaving my theory for Boston Section.

Not sure tbh maybe Mew-Ray = How they meet? Why does Ray love him?

Solo Backstory = His mom died, at first I thought it was suicide, but after reading @bengiyo stray thoughts I realized it was probably alchool poising.

This one is another sure. Mew-Ray probably (see above). Maybe also with Boston, they have not intereacted directly or alone yet, idk.

Sand

Solo Backstory = Based on the writer twitter response on the car accident theory my best guess is that someone he loved was in car accident because they were either drunk driving themeself or hit by a drunk driver.

Sand-Nick = When did they meet? Why? Are they university friends? Please tell me someone else is intrigued by how First and Mark played that scene, it literally sent sparks in my brain. I want to see more of them.

Sand-Top = Like stated above in Top section, there is definately something going on there. They do not like each other.

Nick

Solo Backstory = Something involving his parents, I think Nick lied about that store being a family business. I think he was living in a hole of an appartment because he was kicked out by his parents. Also is the Camboy theory correct? Is he one already or he is going to become one?

Nick-Sand = GIVE ME MOREEEEEEE!!!!!!

Nick-Top = Maybe, if Nick and Sand are friends he might have around when that thing between Sand and Top went down, and in the preview we saw him look at that picture with Boston and Top. Maybe it's not just jealousy but recognition on his face.

BONUS = Was anyone else reminded of Together With Me Side couple?? I had to look up the names: Farm and Bright the older Player Doctor and The University Student. Farm was an innocent boy and ended the series heartbroken and becoming just like the player and the player ended up lonely and regretting it. (We will ignore s2 for this parrallel).

Boston

This is my biggest theory section. It ties a bit into the Together with Me idea and with Parrelles in general.

Solo Backstory (+ possible reasons he seems particulary weird about Mew) = I am not sure if Jojo did something like this before because my memory sucks, but Boston could be the kind of character that had a bad expierience with sex and a realtionship and that turn into only wanting sex and thinking he is only good for sex.

What if he was someone's Nick? What if Mew and Boston knew each other first, either in High School or first year of University. What if they both liked the same boy. And they were both young and inexpierienced. What if that boy tried to get with Mew first. But Mew didn't sleep with him. And what if that boy then went to Boston. Young, wide-eyes Boston who fell for it. What if they had a sex relationship, it went on for months. What if that boy asked for sexual things, more and more, I am reminded of that Together with Me scene with Doctor Bright almost convincing Farm to an orgy and him leaving (at least I think he left before it could start). What if it was something like that except Boston didn't leave.

And then what if after all of it, the boy dumped him. Because well he couldn't bring Boston to his parents could he? He is a slut now? A sex thing, not boyfriend material, too easy. What if he compared him to Mew something like "Now your friend Mew, he is the kind of guy would make a great boyfriend, he has his virtue intact"

For now it's just a theory, something to explain Boston obsession with Mew's virginity and that wanting to basically win Top over Mew. I also love the idea of Boston being someone's Nick before and that Together With Me parrallel would not leave my brain. Anyway that's it.

okay! fair warning, I am a Beowulf scholar at a fairly serious level (archeology major, medieval studies minor, presenting at a major conference in February) but I will do my best to keep this brief and easy to understand. (update: failed miserably, this is VERY long, but the controversy, and the spn of it all, is very complicated to explain)

I assume the controversy you've run into is that nobody is quite sure what Grendel's Mother IS, as she and her son are never given physical description, or clearly labeled as any type of creature. Scholars have debated whether they are human, monstrous, nature spirits/Fae, or even pagan gods. The text describes them as related to giants (lit. "Jotun"), elves, "evil phantoms", etc. However, they are confirmed to have one clear relative in existing mythology- Cain.

They're descendants of Cain, and they bear Cain's curse to:

-wander forever, on the edges of civilization, never to settle

-keep the company of monster and ghosts in forgotten places

-die violently and tragically

-be hated by God for some reason, to the point that God blesses & protects those who try to kill them (genuinely what did they do to deserve this. they're just a couple of *SPECIES REDACTED* trying to live their lives)

....hey does this sound familiar?

That's all we know for sure about what Grendel & Mother are in terms of species. For Grendel himself, we get a few physical details:

-he's a giant. unspecified HOW big, but far bigger than any human has right to be.

-he eats people and drinks their blood

-he's extremely strong, immune to weapons (so, swords/blades/arrows, given the time period), and likely has a tough hide and/or claws.

-he has extremely enhanced hearing, and his ability to hear the local vikings partying it up a few miles away seems to be what drives him to seek out and eat them. many/most later interpretations of Grendel have the noise prevent him from sleeping and/or invoke some kind of religious agony due to his nature as a child of Cain (vikings in this era were just beginning to be Chrisitan- and doing it very loudly)

HEY DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR.

as for Mother, we get little-to-no clue as to what she looked like. She has some degree of magic, and is an extremely skilled combatant. while she has claws (and is likely very large herself) she prefers to use what the poem describes as a "broad-whetted knife", opting to get on top of Beowulf and stab at him from above.

re: plot, Mother shows up after Beowulf mortally wounds Grendel. the giant flees home and dies on the shore of the lake where he & Mother lived. Driven by grief for her son, Mother attacks the hall, and kills King Hrothgar's top advisor, leaving his severed head on the edge of her territory as a "fuck off" message. this is important because it follows the viking law of "weregild"- if someone kills your kin, and doesnt pay you for their life, you can kill one of their kin. She took one man in payment for her son, and DESPITE THIS, Beowulf tracks her to her own lair, her own HOME, engages her in combat, and kills her- this breaches the law and social code of the time.

in terms of her name: she doesn't have one. Her entire identity and existence is defined by her son- her protection of him, her rage and grief at his death, and the revenge that leads to her own slaughter.

however she has two main "kennings", which are like titles or nicknames.

the first one is "Merewif" or "Mere-wife". A "Mere" (pronounced "meer" or "mire") is a swamp, bog or briny area. Think of this as something like "Mermaid MILF" with a swampier vibe. or, think of throwing pronunciation out the window, using "Merie"/"Mere" as a nickname, and crying about it. ....that's what I do.

the second kenning is much more complicated because it uses two words that have no modern equivalent*

the kenning itself is "Ides, Aglaecwif"

"Ides" or "Idis" is a title of respect for a queen or noblewoman, and is used to refer to other female royalty in Beowulf. it is also used commonly to refer to female goddesses, especially Valkyries, in other sources (good luck getting the image & thematic implications of Valkyrie!Dean out of your head)

"Aglaecwif" is a combination of "wif" (wife or woman) and "Aglaeca"

"Aglaeca" is.... sure one of the words ever. nobody knows the true root, but its theorized to come from roots meaning "pain/warlike/ache" and "demonstrate/perform/ritual". it is used to describe supernatural (sry I have no better word to use here) or awe-inspiring combatants (and in extremely rare cases, ppl who are impressive for other reasons) but can be used for both heroes and villains. "Aglaeca" is used to refer to:

-Beowulf

-Grendel

-Mother

-the dragon that eventually kills Beowulf

due to this ambiguity, a lot of modern translations opt to translate "Aglaeca" differently depending on who its referring to, meaning that its modern definition is best listed as:

"hero, warlike, brave, valiant/ wretch, demon, monster, accursed"

or you could just define is as "Winchester" and be right. ....and then cry about it.

*ok, technically the best possible translation of "Aglaeca" is "Supe" but I don't have to like that fact.

overall, "Ides, Aglaecwif" has been variously translated as "monster woman", "hell-bride", "warrior woman", "warrior queen", "hag/ogress"

(or if you're me and can't be normal about ANYTHING, "Soldier Girl, Bride Of Hell". its technically an accurate translation.)
