Chris Pine: Yeah I mean I’m NAMED Kirk and I’m gonna have SOME of Kirk’s personality traits but I am trying to somewhat make my own character
Zachary Quinto (in his oddly high pitched voice): I WILL be emotive because I MUST portray Spock’s inner turmoil! But not too much! Still gotta stay true to the character!
Karl Urban: I fused souls with DeForrest Kelly.

I actually do wish Spirk was canon, but I want it to be entirely off-screen and just mentioned by other characters as a matter of fact. Like 'hey, did you know Starfleet only ever made one exception to their fraternization policy, and that was to allow Spock to serve under Kirk when they got married?' Or maybe there's a planet that's populated by Vulcan-Terran hybrids and everyone knows that it was founded by those two because the conditions were good for both species. No, Kirk wasn't the youngest captain in Starfleet, the record was actually beaten by his daughter Saavik two decades later. People say she struggled to live up to her parents' fame, poor thing. A hundred years later Kirk and Spock's messages to each other are published in two tomes. The High Council deems them so inappropriate that they're banned on Vulcan, et cetera.
Any depiction of Spirk on screen would be inherently disappointing because it's straight up impossible to live up to sixty years of fan-made content. The only way to make it good is to incorporate it into the lore and arouse even MORE speculation and fan-made content.
Feel free to disagree, though...if you could make Spirk canon, how would you do it?

"You have never faced a death" is possibly the most patently insane thing possible to say to James T. Kirk, who has
survived a famine and genocide at age 13, in which over 4000 people died
survived an attack on the Farragut which killed half the crew, including a captain who he cared about, and which he blamed himself for failing to stop
been forced to kill Gary Mitchell, an old friend of his
lost numerous lovers, including a woman carrying his child, and including some he was at least partially responsible for the deaths of
arrived too late to save the lives of his brother and sister-in-law
lost too many crewmembers to count, and you know he held himself personally responsible for each and every one of those
probably more that I'm forgetting about
and then Spock dies, and Kirk fucking AGREES.
He says, yes, you're right. I haven't faced death. Not like this.
Not like this.
All of those deaths he's lived through, and blamed himself for? You're telling me that none of them mean as much to him as the death of Spock? And you want me to read this as. what. Normal friend things?? When he calls Spock the more noble half of his soul?? And says that Spock's katra is his responsibility, just as much as if it were his own???
And what if I screamed??!???

Watching Star Trek IV
Whale biologist: why do you hang around with that weird guy who calls you admiral and why are you so close?
Kirk: *hesitates*
Whale biologist, who lives in San Francisco in the 80s and is rapidly drawing many correct conclusions: that’s okay we don’t have to talk about it.

Loved how the answers to V’ger and Spock’s question of “Is this all that I am?” lie in such human concepts of love, acceptance, union. The completion of their sense of selves are not dependent on the two men, but rather so much more fulfilling, real, and tangible through loving them and everything that comes with doing so.
Side note: love being a want or need for union is a philosophical take i don’t 100% agree with (narratively speaking it’s so romantic, though, especially in this movie’s context LOL), but Marilyn Friedman’s twist on love as more of a separate, “third” unified entity (a federation of the lovers’ selves) was fun to think about ^_^

New Star Trek headcanon: Chekov thinks McCoy is from Georgia (country) and not Georgia (USA) and keeps calling him "neighbor" because Russia's next to Georgia. McCoy is very confused.
