Free RPG Day: Exploring 9th Level Games Level 1 Anthology 2024

This weekend was Free RPG Day! Although a big TTRPG aficionado, my city sadly doesn't do it very due to it being an American thing primarily, but this year we did have a shop participating!

My family and I picked some stuff up and I went through all of it as of today. The new Starfinder and Pathfinder stuff is as great as always, I especially love the Squox animal companion, a perfect pal for any character interested in a Dex Animal Companion that can Disarm (using Acrobatics) and make enemies Off-Guard. While the Story Engine deck is a tried and true handy tool for any GM (and I am quite in love with my mini one).

What I'm interested in talking about is some of the TTRPGs in 9th Level's Level 1 Anthology for 2024 though. I wasn't super familiar with this company outside of Kobolds Ate My Baby (but I did buy Business Wizards from them during Free RPG Day as well to support my LGS), so I wasn't aware of this anthology. Reading through all the tech inspired games this year was a treat though. So, here's some of my faves!

• Metavault Heist (By Null Set Tabletop): a TTRPG about a group of people getting together and raiding a metavault in VR. The main gimmick being that you can make up your own set up of user permissions your character has access to that give you abilities you define.

I primarily enjoy the fun narrative elements one can use in a VR setting, but also it's super easy to start running. These combined with the aforementioned power system create a really neat little game overall!

• New God (By Carlos Hernandez): a journaling TTRPG where you play as a new deity in an age of your choice. You start out small, such as the god of fishhooks, but the goal is to expand your domains and gain influence. You do this via the monolith, a stack of 10 d6 which you can add to or take away each day to gain worshippers and add more points to domains. Knock it down and your followers falter, however, and you may even die.

I'm a sucker for any TTRPG about faith involving strange and esoteric deities and this one puts you into the role of one! The monolith mechanic is something incredibly inspired that makes me wonder what style of game I could make with a similar idea. The game also makes me want to go to the game store and buy two dozen d6 immediately.

• Your Dungeon, Room By Room (By Calvin Johns): a solo TTRPG where you take the role of a wizard building their dungeon. It's actually just a really good dungeon building tool for other games too that let's you make a dungeon with history and a random, although controlled, layout.

As mentioned above, this is primarily a dungeon building tool with TTRPG elements. If you're a GM like me, designing interesting dungeons isn't exactly easy and the random tables in the back of books aren't always satisfying. This scratches my itch for Dungeon Keeper style games on a simpler level and gives me a good excuse to open up Dungeon Draft and have a good time. All I could ask for really.

• Offline-41 (By Michael Cremisus Gibson): a strange solo TTRPG where you're the admin of a dead Discord server. It has you create a Discord server and RP its history through messages to other people (who aren't really there) and voice chatting with yourself in it. Exploring how bonds fail and the ephemeral nature of the online forum service.

I've been a Discord admin in a large server since 2019 and have been using the service for nearly a decade now. I've seen servers die in real time, and have lost contact with people on the service I used to talk with everyday simply due to life. It's sad and this game really explores well how sad it can be. I appreciate the themes and how it executes them, and I imagine it's a game that will speak to a lot of people my age because of it.

Conclusion

Overall, a great anthology with other quality experiences and TTRPGs beyond the 4/14 listed here. In the meantime, check those out and the other stuff the writers presented here have put together! I know I will.

im not sure how to parse this exactly (probably since the thought hasn't marianted fully yet) but i wonder if the tone of veilguard's writing is less about appealing to a younger audience and more of a response to falling media literacy rates

kind of thinking out loud here but like.

i'm recalling the girl on booktok who proudly annouced that she only reads the spoken dialogue in her books, not the narration & the people in her comments laughing and agreeing (no wonder they can 'read' so many books per year, they're only reading 25% of the words). or 'starting to think some of you don't like media or characters, just fanfiction tropes.' you can hand someone like that a complex narrative, but what are they going to do with it aside from completely & happily misunderstand things that are very obvious context clues & themes? we can joke about the fandom mischaracterizing our blorbos & trying to be cool about just scrolling past but idk, personally i feel like i've seen an uptick in completely off-base takes in the last few years (probably some fandom bias there but this isn't my first time playing dragon age or narrative driven games in general so i don't think i'm entirely wrong)

it doesn't help that this group also loves to be loud online & the bioware devs (to their ongoing detriment) seem to be unable to distance themselves from fandom. we saw larian's response to this type of outcry, i wonder if bioware is just trying to get ahead of the curve. they make some questionable decisions, but they aren't stupid & i don't think people like that are especially hard to market to from their standpoint.

i don't think that older titles like dao are perfect or anything but i sincerely doubt that large swaths of current audiences would 'get' it. like, there IS a lot of narrative hand-holding in this game & i'm not talking about things like the map markers or accessibility features. 'do the companion quests!' you get told multiple times, more or less outright, & i'm still seeing people confused about getting 'bad' endings despite ignoring this incredibly obvious series of hints. there's a fair amount of information to be found in the codexes, but are people going to read them? we don't know, so we're going to repeat the relevant item name several times over on the off chance you might end up remembering it. like yes this is some people's first foray into rpgs, but you would think that progressing the story would be intuitive (especially given the structure & the journal itself).

the 'the curtains were blue!!!' crowd is unfortunately a very large audience these days, ea is a corporation who wants to make money & they do need that if they intend to keep making games. it might not even be intentional, it truly could just be the result of following market trends.

don't take this as me making excuses for bioware or anything, but there's definitely some sort of reason we ended up the way we did. i see the scaffolding of something interesting here with a lot of potential to be better than what the final product was, a lot of hooks we could have spent more time chasing & that leads to me wondering just what the hell happened.

Emily on Adventuring Party saying "I was gonna reach out to Ruben but then he dropped a fucking 9th level spell on me," is pretty illustrative of the difference between how the players see the game versus how a lot of folks online see it, like...why am I seeing people say stuff like "oh, they're all anti-capitalist until the battle starts and then all of a sudden, they're cops???? Do they not believe in restorative justice???"

These are kids who have plotted the deaths of the Bad Kids well before any of them actually did anything to warrant it, other than being good at adventuring. They've been openly antagonistic or have lied to and manipulated them. We're like, two episodes removed from them killing one of their own clerics (for the second time!) because they lost their opportunity to kill all of the Bad Kids. They sent dragons after a house full of kids that they launched into the sky in a wildly premeditated plan. They may have magically corrupted Gorgug's house!

The Rat Grinders have been manipulated by their teachers and magically corrupted by rage, yes, but even if you want to talk them down, if there's a rage wizard with ninth-level spells running around, you don't let that motherfucker drop a meteor swarm on all of your heads, like...there are priorities

When I tap into your aenergy, there’s this notion that dings clearest as a crystal: Child of Light~★ You are an Ancient Soul with immaculate purity and massive powers.
