Got any headcanon about Thranduils relationship with his assistant, Feren?

OhMySqueeeee! I ADORE FEREN. Love or hate The Hobbit Trilogy, he is one of the best created-for-film characters to come out of those movies. He is its Lindir equivalent!

Feren will gradually develop into an important supporting character in the SotWK AU. I've even created an additional OC to be his twin sister; her name is Celuwen and she will also be an important side character in the series. (Both make guest appearances in my recent Young Legolas fic, "Greenleaf's Tree".)

For now, here are the key points I have regarding Feren's character history and his relationship with Thranduil and his family:

SotWK Canon Spotlight: Feren, Captain of the Mirkwood Kingsguard

Feren is a full-blooded Silvan elf, born and raised in the southern regions of Greenwood the Great in Third Age 142. (Exactly 100 years older than Legolas and Tauriel.)

His father is a woodcutter and his mother a hunter--both esteemed professions in the realm.

His bookish twin sister Celuwen became a royal scribe at the remarkably young age of 90. Feren followed her into the employ of King Thranduil as a palace guard.

After just a few years, Feren was given a position in the royal escort.

Feren serves Thranduil's family for his entire career, becoming close friends with the princes, especially Gelir and Legolas. (see his banter with them in the fic, "Unnecessary Guardian")

Thranduil was constantly impressed by Feren's loyalty, courage, and trustworthiness. He appointed Feren as the youngest member of his Kingsguard in Third Age 672.

When Dol Guldur rose around Third Age 1000 and the southern parts of the realm grew increasingly infested by the Necromancer's dark creatures, Feren was dismayed by the devastation wrought upon his birthland.

He requested placement in the spiderhunters, a newly-formed company of specialized soldiers led by Prince Gelir. This was a demotion for him into a less prestigious and more dangerous job, but it put him where he wanted to be--at the frontline of Mirkwood's defenses.

But eventually, over a thousand years later, Feren found his way back into the direct service of the Elvenking. Thranduil chose him specifically for the leadership position of Captain of the Kingsguard. This is very different from the "captain" position Tauriel seems to have in the films. The Kingsguard rides alongside Thranduil in battle or any dangerous situation, and their sole task is to keep the King safe--a tremendous challenge and responsibility!

While Feren is in essence a high-ranking bodyguard and right hand of sorts to Thranduil, he is not an assistant. The "assistant" role is more accurately fulfilled by Celuwen, Feren's sister. By TA 555, she has become the royal family's secretary, a job she holds longer than any Elf in the realm (but that's another story for later).

Thranduil comes to depend on these twins greatly, especially after the loss of his sons and wife. They grow as dear to him as family, as they have always been utterly devoted to their King and ever refused to leave his service.

Even Queen Maereth has jokingly/lovingly referred to Feren and Celuwen as "the twin children we never had". (Twins run in her family.)

Tell Me A Tale

Authors Note: Plz be nice!! First thing I've written and posted in like 4 years, I'm rusty! I fear there's a lot of dialogue. I'm thinking of making this with multiple parts but for now this is it.

OH! And this isn't set in Hawkins. So, this is an AU where Eddie is just a hot tatted dude. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. 👍

The bell dings, echoing through the small shop on the corner of 5th and Main. Floor to ceiling bookshelves wrap themselves around the store, dust settled in on a few shelves. The door said open, but the vacant counter to the right of the door was unoccupied. Maybe Eddie had read the sign wrong, but he was about 90 percent sure the sign said open.

“Hello?” His voice seemed to echo around the space for a moment before a loud clattering sounded from the back room. 

“Be with you in a moment!” drifted back to him, followed by another series of clashes and finally a few curses. That caused Eddie to smile softly to himself. Another few minutes passed by before he finally saw a pair of legs appear out of the back room, just legs because the rest of her was hidden behind a large stack of books, stacked haphazardly in her arms. “Sorry about making you wait, it's technically my first day working the store by myself and as you can probably tell I've got my work cut out for me."

“I can see, I thought this store had been here for the past 20 or so years though." Thats what Steve had told him when he brought up needing a new copy of 'The Hobbit'.

Eddie grimaced as the store owner tripped on a loose bit of the carpet and almost dropped everything before quickly correcting herself. Taking a deep breath she finally deposited them at the counter before turning to take Eddie in. And Eddie in turn was finally getting all of her as well. She was just as frumpled as he thought she would be, it made him smile.

Denim overalls layered on top of a plain black t-shirt, bright red converse on each foot. Mismatched socks along with her hair looking like it was about to fall out of the messy braid it was forced into. Skin slightly damp from the sticky summer heat that had taken over the city during this hot July afternoon. She looked adorably...tired. Like she had been running on zero sleep and 3 cups of coffee. He felt bad for just realizing it, even though he had just stepped into her store for the first time.

"Yeah, once again, sorry about the mess," She stepped around the counter truly taking the mantel of 'bookseller'. "Um yeah, I just took over from my grandmother." The pause between her words seemed forced, necessary for her to calm down. He felt a stone fall into his stomach, waiting for the next words to fall from her lips. "she's not doing too great recently but," she paused once again, regaining her composure. "Sorry, I'm sure you didn't come in to hear about my life, how can I help you?"

To her credit, Eddie was sure he'd be a blubbering mess if he had to go on and act like everything was fine if (heaven forbid) anything were to happen to Wayne. He certainly wasn't going to hold her small word vomit against her. He also wouldn't mind hearing all about her life if he were to give him the chance.

"All good, I'm actually looking for a copy of 'The Hobbit'," He stepped over to stand across from her, the counter between them. "My last copy is covered in strawberry ice cream" (read: Dustin made a mess)

"Ah, unfortunately were out of our copies. But if you're willing to wait I can order one for you on my next shipment?" Eddie was convinced this girl could talk him into anything. Even if he was in a hurry to own the book again. (He wasn't)

"Yeah, It's absolutely no rush. What do you need for that?" He watched her pull out a receipt pad, jotting down the book title and price in swirly handwritten letters.

"Just a name and good number to contact you at? For when the book comes in," She was quick with the second sentence. But regardless, Eddie was completely content leaving his personal information in her capable hands. And within minutes the book was paid for, and he was set.

All he had to do now was wait for her call.

I have a question that may or may not be possible to be covered by a poll, but I will try :)

When in school, in the range between 6 and 14 years of age, if you had specific books or stories assigned as parts of curriculum of literature, how big a percentage of them were from your language/country/regional culture, and how many branched out?

For example, to explain what I mean. In Poland, for "Polish language" we get A LOT of compulsory items to read. Among these are books written for the specific age group in Polish AND ALSO relevant books translated from other countries. At least when I was at school (80s-90s) we had "Alla vi barn i Bullerbyn" (Swedish), "A Pál utcai fiúk" (Hungarian), with also "Pippi Långstrump" and "Hobbit" being an option. "Anne of Green Gables" was on the list, and I think "Secret Garden", too. Some stories translated from Russian were nearly a given, since I started primary school in 1985, but I managed to successfully delete them from my brain.

So, what was it like for you?

(I'm trying to cover also the option of eg British books being read in US, AU and other EN-speaking countries, so option 4 is about that; but also if you're reading books from Spain in Latin America or books from France in countries where French is one of main languages....)

Please share for wider response pool. I'm really curious how it happens in other countries. If you add some option I did not cover, please hint at a language/country :)

Hello 😊 I saw you reblog the a "get to know your writer" post and wondered if it was ok for me to ask a few questions? If so, I'd ask 1, 7, 16, 25 and 56?

Absolutely! Let's see....

1 . Do you prefer writing one-shots or multi-chaptered fics?

Honestly, multi-chapter! I actually find it really, really hard to write a one-shot. I mean, I can do it, and certainly have done it... but my plots usually tend to get away from me and branch out here, there, and everywhere! The only problem is, I also don't tend to finish those multi-chapter monsters...

7 . How do you choose which POV to write from?

It depends on what story I am trying to tell. If I want some details to go unknown to a character for mystery's sake, I will write in their POV; or I will write in the POV of the person who has the most emotional stake. When I am writing a ship fic, I often try to write from both POVs (alternating from chapter to chapter) to compare and contrast how they are coping or what they are thinking. The challenge there is to get the "voices" right, though.

16 . How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Share one of them?

Far, far too many to count! In way too many different fandoms! Of the stories I haven't posted a word on yet (as opposed to current WIPs that I have up at AO3), there's at least one Lokius AU, a couple Bagginshield angst pieces, three gen TMNT fics, and a couple of random ideas that I have yet to fix a fandom to.

25 . What fic do you wish you got more of a response on?

Oh, gosh. It's weird, but although I absolutely love getting comments, I don't often push for them because I don't want to seem... needy, I guess? Back in the late 90s and early naughties, it was actually a lot easier to get responses to fics. The fandoms were smaller and everyone knew everyone, so the stories would be passed between friends online... so now living in the age of kudos is actually a bit disorienting. Of course, the fics that don't get responses are usually about pretty obscure people or situations. Like Afterimage (a short Hobbit thing about Nori as a child), The Touch Of Rain (about Cobb Vanth), and When She Loved Me (an imagined backstory about a character that was only in the TMNT Adventures comics... and when I originally wrote and posted that one twenty-some years ago, it got a much better reception). I do notice that gen stories tend to get swept to the side in favor of ship-fics, though, which always seem to get some kind of response.

56 . What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on?

Actually, what I mentioned up in #7 about finding the right voices. I think I do okay with getting into characters' heads and making them each sound individual. Again, like I said... it isn't always easy. I'm currently writing a chapter in a story... and in this chapter a character is in medical distress and we are seeing it from their POV. Problem is, two chapters ago there was a different character in medical distress whose POV I was writing from... and in both instances the characters are waking up from being treated. It's taking a bit of juggling to make sure the second one and the first one are different enough so people don't think, "hey... I've read this already!" It helps, I guess, that one of the characters is more skilled in medical concerns, so they are more calm about the whole thing while the other one was in full panic mode.

ok so, i'm, insane, and in order to write that fanfic that hit me at 3am the other night, i had to draw out a floor plan. BECAUSE the fic is like, the kitsunetanuki au but like, also baginshield and howl's moving castle inspired. MEANING hobbit holes and magic curses.

this meant: finding a rather delightful reference for japanese culture circa 1910 (which is available for free online but i also bought an edition fr 1911 bc i am quite insane), having to search for tanuki's in japanese bc the english web does not care for them. refreshing my knowledge on badger dens. figuring out the history for indoor plumbing. deciding that bc badger's are hygienic they'd have figured out indoor plumbing. that since raccoon dogs and foxes don't make their own den's, an old badger one would be great. getting pissed off ab tatami mats. getting pissed off ab the kitchen in that reference book

HOWEVER i'm still stumped on if i should be using an irori for this thing?? bc like, while i can figure out how to supply wood to it and figure out the chimney situation, i'm like, is this practical??

as u can see the bottom right corner is the ✨new✨ version and i've yet to actually make a layout of it. tatami mats are so. square. why did i make circle holes. 90 degree angles are unnatural. also fuck that kitchen. hate that thing.

anyway, plot: tanjiro finds the badger hole, spruces it up, randomly finds a uh, non-responsive rengoku, tries to help him, helps him undo his curse. which makes it so that he's only "alive" when he's been ignited as if he were a fire. doesn't harm him at all, but he needs to be holding items that feed flames in order to be alive. thank god tanjiro makes charcoal for a living.

uh, more plot too. childhood promises. ghosts. maybe carbon monoxide poisoning. maybe i'll steer this into the ghost and mrs. muir territory and kill rengoku for realises and make him haunt the hobbit hole until tanjiro passes. i probably won't, but a girl can't help but to look at romantic ghost movies fr 1947 and go "oh shit, this would be perfect for my ships where one guy is dead"

they'll probably have offspring, but in that fun cabbage patch way. rengoku pulls out a sweet potato and woah what there's a baby there?! that sorta nonsense is perfect for this bullshit fairy tale

My main gripe with South Park fic is that it is very rarely weird enough.

All of the weird shit in canon, and its 90% high school aus.

Like we canonically have a Cupid Me, so a canon compliant soulmate fic isn't out of the question.

There's a sentient talking poo and Underpants gnomes, and fucking canon hobbits. You can make whatever creature you like. Weirder things have happened.

There's a parallel universe in canon where everyone has an opposite personality, and while I've seen some cool shit done with that its still incredibly underutilized. (might have to write a fic one day where an Evil!Butters tortures Cartman and beats him at his own game.)

woken up with the realisation that Ranger AU is going to be

far longer than originally planned

possibly split in two parts

the first point is fairly simple: I write too much and don't know how to stop

the second point? Well I was thinking about just stopping Ranger AU at the start of the Fellowships quest, because it would be 90% the same as On Swift Wings besides a few minor details and there's fuck all point in writing the exact same thing twice. But then I realised the priorities of Ranger!Rhosynel would be somewhat different, and that would result in different actions

specifically her actions at Amon Hen

OG!Rhosynel is primarily focused on the hobbits and protecting them, and as such they head west

Ranger!Rhosynel would (by the start of the quest) be in an active relationship with Boromir and that would mean that if she saved him at Amon Hen, her next step would 10000% be to get Boromir the fuck home to safety and an actual healer (rather than her bodge job), and would therefore head east

soooo yeah

not gonna actively plan to write it, but there may very well end up being a part two to Ranger AU that picks up around/after Amon Hen...
