WIP Game
No one tagged me, I tagged myself in because I want to and you can't stop me =P And I'm tagging everyone who sees this that writes! Do it! Dooo iiit!
Rules: In a new post, list the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it. And then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
I don't actually have a WIP folder, I have WIP folders, plural. So, I'm adding a rule that I can't have posted any of the fic online anywhere for it to qualify, and I also have to have worked on it some time in the last... four years?
Let's see if that keeps me below the 50 fics mark (place your bets now)...

Aaand the total comes to 90! At least it's less than a 100... And that's just the stuff I've worked on recently! (Yes, four years is recent. I have fics I haven't actually touched in 6+ years that are still marinating in my brain, waiting for the pieces to fall into place) If you've trawled through all of those to get here, you've got more stamina than I do!
Please ask about anything that piques your interest! I'd love to talk about some of these, see if it gets the creative juices flowing. (Also feel free to ask about any of the WIPs I have posted on here or Ao3!)

It has been an astonishing 20 YEARS since Susanna Clarke first published her debut novel Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell on 8th September 2004.
To celebrate, we have planned a Readalong for old fans, those who have had it on their TBR pile for a while and haven't managed to get round to it, and for those who maybe haven't even heard of it yet.
The Readalong will start off on 2nd September 2024, with discussions taking place on the official discord for the chapters being each week. We also have groups on StoryGraph and Goodreads for those who would like to keep track in those places, which will be linked to closer to September.
We have broken the book down into chunks of roughly 70 pages per week, in the hopes that this is a fairly gentle reading pace to fit into your lives, as the book is a bit of a beast.
Please follow this blog for more information as we keep you updated!

An interesting easter egg from The Church on Ruby Road: The book on Cherry's bedside table is Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, a book about magic returning to England. After the salt thing from Wild Blue Yonder, the Toymaker's return in The Giggle, and now goblins in The Church on Ruby Road, it looks like a recurring theme in these new episodes is... the return of magic to the Universe. 🤔

jonathan strange and mr norrell is hands down one of my favorite shows, but a little while ago I realized. that I’ve never actually. read the book.
like I loved the show so much I am absolutely fucking baffled that I never once thought ‘oh let’s check it out from the library and have a good time part 2’
& something about the weather lately (extremely windy) brought it to mind, so I checked it out from the library and I’m having a great time reading it so far 🥳
⭐ places I’m at! bsky / pixiv / pillowfort /cohost / cara.app / tip jar!
#I got hit in the face with a stray branch from how strong the winds are but tbh it’s preferable to how my body is dealing with the pollen#augugughhhh#thank god. for books. to distract from the agonies of existing inside a meat suit plagued with pollen allergies#jonathan strange and mr norrell#john segundus#john childermass

For those unfamiliar with the wonderful world of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, a mossoak is a fairy creature made out of a log of wood pulled out of a bog and enchanted to resemble Jonathan Strange's wife (in order to trick him into giving his real wife to the fairy). Of course, because she's stolen someone else's identity, she doesn't have a name of her own. I'm writing a story where she gets one, but I can't decide which one.
All names were picked from the most contemporary 'baby name book' I could find (which was, admittedly, 1860s instead of 1810s, but then, there weren't name collections like that before then, so I think it can be forgiven).
Reasoning and meanings under the read more so that you can pick a name just by how it sounds if you want, but if you're like me and think way too hard about this sort of thing, you can take a peek first and then make your choice.
Amaranth - 'unfading flower' obviously a nice uplifting plant-related name. It's also entirely possible that the mossoak is immortal for as long as the bargain remains unmade, so it felt appropriate.
Diarma - feminine form of Diarmid; 'oak-father' literally one of only two names in the book that had anything to do with oak trees.
Melanthusa - 'dark flower' given that something of a big deal is made of her wearing black when Jonathan so hates to see his wife in black, this felt appropriate.
Minna - 'born in memory' given that the mossoak was 'born' from Arabella's tears this felt particularly poignant.
Petala - 'a young leaf' figurative for a young girl or maiden. I like the poetry of it, and it also makes reference to the fact that the mossoak, despite being technically very old, is very very young when it comes to this being human business.
Scione - 'one who lives in the shade' this has a very nature-y vibe, but also, the mossoak is very much living in the shadow of another, and it gave me very bittersweet feels.
Sylvia - 'from a forest', which doesn't need much explanation, I don't think, but it also means 'strange', which is both funny and also poignant, because she is a bit alien to everything human.
Thalia - 'flourishing', a wish for the future in terms a tree would understand? I just really like the name and the meaning seemed to fit.
Zillah - 'shadow' in the sense of shelter and protection from the sun, which is appropriate both in the sense of her once having been a tree, but also, again, in the sene of her being a shadow or echo of Arabella, and also, perhaps, of needing protection.

Costume designer Annie Hardinge likely created this sweet little gown for the 2013 movie Austenland, where the piece made its debut on Keri Russell as Jane Hayes. It went on to be reused in the 2015 television mini-series Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, where Lucinda Dryzek’s Flora Greysteel considered it while holding it up to herself in front of a mirror. Suki Waterhouse wore it the following year to portray Kitty Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, though it can best be viewed in a deleted scene. The gown also had the distinction of being used in both the 2019 short version and the 2022 film version of Mr. Malcolm’s List, first by Olivia Caley as Lucy and later by an extra. It was used again on extras in the 2020 first episode of Belgravia, as well as the 2022 second season of Sanditon.

I got so (incredibly delightfully) overwhelmed today reading an interview with Susanna Clarke by the NYT that my dad sent me.
I love her writing so dearly and reading about her process and her journey was just… everything. Validating and hopeful and helpful. I hope she’s having a beautiful day.

They had been alarmed enough by all the shouting and banging, but when they held up their candles and found that its author was a wild-eyed, cutthroat-looking person with a slit in his face and his shirt all bloody, they were not in the least reassured.
Goes feral over this description of Childermass
There was a queer insubstantiality about him. He looked as if he were painted on air. The merest draught from a gap in the casement took his hair and made little corkscrews and curlicues of it, as if it weighed nothing at all.
Goes EVEN MORE feral over this description of Segundus
I think the delicate wilting flower of a swooning pre-victorian gentleman and the rugged, frightening castaway all over with blood should KISS
