It's around 2:45 am when the heat from Timothee's body wakes you. Youtuber!Timmy and Youtuber!Jimmy AU
Follow up to my Youtuber!Danny Phantom AU from this post cus I can't stop thinking about this AU.
Timmy runs a channel named Fairly Odd Creatures where he makes full-blown mockumentaries about all kinds of mythical creatures/cryptids. Once every 2-3 months he will post a video that's about 60 minutes long and the production value that goes into them is absolutely mind-blowing. People are constantly flooding his inbox, demanding to know what his secret is. There are all-out wars in the comment section of his videos (or whatever social media platform his videos are being discussed on) debating on how in the world the footage is pulled off. Nobody can agree on if it's super-advanced cgi or the best blend of makeup and props the internet has ever seen.
Timmy's secret of course is just the fact that Cosmo and Wanda will simply poof into existence whatever creature Timmy needs for his video. Then he just has to follow it around for a few hours with his camcorder and then edit the footage together.
The funniest part of his videos (and probably the reason that they're so popular) is that nothing in them is even remotely in line with what has already been popularized. For example: "Chupacabra's? Yeah, it turns out they don't drink the blood of livestock. They eat metal. Specifically, automobile metal. Don't believe me? Well I lost this Chupacabra in downtown Dimmsdale for a few hours and it ate half of this totally random car before I found it again. Here's a clip of it taking a chomp out of the tire like it's a donut." (The car belonged to Mr. Crocker and it wasn't an accident).
Each and every video Timmy uploads is guaranteed to hit number one on trending for a few hours, and then hover in the top 20 for a few days. This gives Timmy a bit of an ego, especially since whenever he posts a new one everyone at school is talking about it the next day. He tells himself that he can't reveal his identity because then he's have to explain how he's pulling everything off (his voice is disguised with a magical voice modulator that makes him sound like a dramatic narrator) and thus risk exposing Cosmo and Wanda. However, the second that Trixie off-handedly mentions she watches them he spills the beans. Thankfully for his fairies, nobody believes him.
Jimmy's channel is called Brain Blast in which he posts about his projects and the science behind them. While he does have a small and dedicated subscriber base, most of the comments on his videos are from months or years after he's uploaded them in the first place of people thanking him for posting such great study aids.
Part of the reason why he has a smaller subscriber base is because he doesn't edit his content. They're all done with a single take, which only is extremely impressive to anyone that notices. He writes the script, preps his slideshow and props, and then hits record. Even though he does plenty of "Fun Science" videos ("Alternative Travel Methods feat. Bubble Travel", "How to Launch Your Toaster into Orbit", "Make Your Own Rust in a Can", etc.) the low production and sound quality for everything gives off the same energy as those channels run by a middle-aged man recording stuff about their niche interest on their phones.
Sheen and Carl appear in most of his videos as his assistants (or lab rats depending on the context). They're pretty great helpers, despite the fact that Sheen always goes off script and Carl gets so camera shy that he forgets his lines. Jimmy has to cut in a lot with "That's an excellent question!" to get them back on track. Libby and even Cindy will make occasional appearances. In fact, most of his popular uploads come from videos that his friends requested: "How Real is the Science in Ultralord?", "Surprising Biology of Lamas!", and "The Science Behind Enjoying Music." are counted among his most popular uploads.
Cindy once tried to get her own channel up and running and was pretty popular for a while, but after a few months she decided that even part-time content creator wasn't something she wanted to invest her time into. Instead, she'll just muscle her way into Jimmy's videos on occasion. More than once she has basically hijacked Jimmy's script halfway through to talk about famous women related to whatever topic Jimmy is covering.
Jimmy can't really bring himself to interrupt Cindy's hijacking's, because whiles she's right about the contributions these famous women have made, they're not super relevant to the hyper-specific topic/experiment he's currently covering (he will just shoot a second video when he's alone and upload it to make sure all his points got covered). Eventually though, he'll get so annoyed with Cindy barging into his lab whenever she finds out he's planning to film (Sheen spills the beans to Libby all the time and she reports to Cindy) that Jimmy will begin to start most of his videos will a few quick facts that he thinks Cindy will like so she'll leave him alone.
When the Youtube algorithm starts recommending Jimmy some of Timmy's mockumentary's, Jimmy will start posting follow-up videos to Timmy's in order to debunk Fairly Odd Creatures. This in turn starts to push Brain Blast up in popularity due to association. Then a portion of Timmy's fanbase gets latched onto Jimmy. They start taking stills from Jimmy's videos to use as reaction images (because Jimmy gets very upset and frustrated with just how wrong everything in Timmy's videos are).
As to not expose himself on his channel, Timmy creates a second channel in which he uploads videos in exactly the same style as Jimmy's. He discredits this "Science" thing that Jimmy is apparently basing all his arguments on and jokes about how Jimmy sounds like a witch. The second channel isn't very popular until Jimmy posts a "In Response to..." video addressing Timmy's second channel directly. This inadvertently brings Timmy's second channel a flash rise in popularity and sparks a whole chain of video uploads between the two of them. There's a solid month of them uploading daily and basically yelling at each other about why people should unsubscribe from the other person.
Timmy throws himself heavily into the second channel (so much so that he almost forget to film content for Fairly Odd Creatures once), adopting a conspiracy theory persona that believes the earth is flat and that the moon is just a government projection. He invites his totally real alien friend Mark Chang onto the channel all the time to talk about Yugopotamia and help discredit Jimmy ("Like yeah man, I totally saw your radical disc-looking planet and had to fly down and check it out.").
And because people are normal on the internet, there's a whole sub-genre of fans that have started to ship Jimmy and Timmy's YouTube channels. 'Enemies-to-lovers' is the most popular trope for them, and there's even a whole subreddit dedicated to the ship that gets fanart and fanfics posted to it on a regular basis. Timmy is very aware of this group of fans and will occasionally sneak in an off-handed remark about Jimmy just to fuel them because he thinks it will piss off Jimmy even more. In fact, there's a whole slew of small channels that clip and compile 'JimTim Evidence' to fuel their theory that Jimmy and Timmy are secretly dating.
Little does Timmy know, there's actually a clip out there of him saying, "Jimmy may not be able to use his oversized head to deduce simple facts, but that least he can pick out glasses that make his eyes look pretty." Jimmy has watched that clip at least a thousand times on loop because he's low-key attracted to Timmy but refuses to admit it. It's part of the reason as to why he gets so worked up about Timmy's responses to him, because how can someone he's attracted to be just so wrong about everything???

I decided to post the first part of the Q&A today, because there were over 60 questions about them and I haven’t finished all of them yet. So don’t despair if you don’t see your question here: it will be in part 2. I will post the second part as soon as I can. This week I have a busy week. I did my best to do this as fast as I could.
I haven’t been able to take photos from all the cards, but i will make a separate post about the decks I used this time.
Q: does Tim really have the patience to wait on Kylie’s timeline? Does she has enough info to blackmail Tim publicly because he loves Armie?

He knows he has to reflect and talk time to make important changes in his life. I think they are really over this time, eventually Kylie has to let him go. As for exposing him and Armie I don’t think she will.
Q: is a cmbyn sequel happening soon?
A: energetically I don’t feel it is, even though a script seems to be written. Unless Luca takes a different direction with it, like for example the different stages in Elio’s life, like he said he wanted to,maybe Oliver only finding in the end. But he said he wanted a sequel with both Armie and Timmy.
Soon, is a very vague concept, and Tarot is not really good for timing, because energy changes all the time.

Q: see photo 2. It seems to me both were overwhelmed the first time.its almost like they lost control.the urge to keep kissing too strong to stop. Timmy particularly was overthinking it, trying to preserve some boundaries. Armie lost control and was not thinking, only later. I heard: it’s like coming home. There was a third party, maybe on both ends at the time.especially Armie but we all know that now. A big mess, but the feeling for each other was strong as ever.
About the timing: tricky. It could have happened during or after filming beautiful boy. But please, don’t come at me, timing is difficult!

Timmy felt like he had met the one. Armie was running away from his feelings. He had a real fear of intimacy, a lot of ego issues (also mentioned in the podcast)but he was never really cutting the cord between them, trying to pull Timmy back.
Q: does Timmy ever think that he doesn’t deserve Armie because he left him when he needed him the most, and that he does PR for his career and cannot even mention Armie?

Both Tim and Armie have done things for their career. Armie has also done things for PR. It’s part of being a Hollywood star. They just have to talk with each other about boundaries. Timmy would love to mention Armie, but I don’t think Armie wanted that. That may be different in future.
Timmy was really frustrated and angry when everything came out. Armie had left him in the dark and it stung big time. They have a tendency to hurt each other, especially when they are not communicating or communicating properly. As we often see with Twin flames.
You have to take in consideration that this a man Timmy really adores and looks up to. His hero in a sense. He fell from his pedestal. But he loves him, although it took him a while to recover from it.
We all make mistakes, it’s how we deal with it that counts.
Q: can Timmy leave Armie for his career?

He obviously could. If they don’t find a way back to each other he might. But I feel he wouldn’t leave him for his career, if he end up leaving him it’s because they can’t make it work.
Q: how Armie felt when Timmy told him he loved him for the first time?
A: frightened and delighted at the same time. I feel this has happened before he completed the journey he’s talking about in the podcast. He couldn’t really deal with it, didn’t think he was worth it.
And yes, there is it again: the twin flame card. They have a whole journey together and separated as well. See photo 4
Q: what’s going on with the outing? Are we ever going to see them as a couple?
This question was asked multiple times, sometimes a bit different phrased or worded. I answered it once. Lots of people asked if it was going to be this year.
A: will we ever see them: see photograph 5.
They haven’t seen each other since September last year I think. So, since they weren’t together, there was no outing.
Yes, if they change their behaviour and make it work, we might see them in future. Prediction: I’m not gonna make one, because if something happens you will say; you predicted it wrongly.
I FEEL that they will work it out sooner or later. So don’t give up, I still think we are gonna see them again. I just don’t know when exactly.
Q: are they still in love with each other? See photo 6
They are, but they have many things they have to work on. Mainly boundaries and communication. And AGAIN the twin flame card
Q: is Armie the first male crush for Timmy?

I don’t want to speculate on someone’s sexuality but it feels like gender is not a big deal for Timmy. I see at least one other male, but I think it didn’t end well. Let’s say he wasn’t surprised when he fell for Armie.
Q: are they exclusive (committed)?
A: both of them, but especially Armie were frustrated and jealous of others, or pr situations. Armie distanced himself and tried other things I think, but he really wasn’t happy about it. This time they want to be exclusive if they can work it out.
Q: will they have a joint holiday or trip? This question was also asked multiple times.

They would like to, but probably there are some obstacles. People may say they can’t or object.They have to make quick decisions about it. It could be just a place to meet up for now, later in Summer maybe there are chances for a longer period together.

Q: will Timmy get another “beard” this year?

A: obviously I can’t claim I predicted this, since we all know he did talk about his journey in Tyler’s podcast. I often felt he would in the end, or maybe just hoped he would and I’m thrilled that he did.
Q: will they have a joint project this year?

A: they love to work together again, but I feel they have to focus on their private lives first, making it difficult to decide now. If they would I think it would be too soon, maybe even discovered by accident and give complications. They might talk about what they want to do together in future.
Q: how does Armie deal with Timmy’s “adventures”
A: I hope I understand correctly that by adventures you mean the rumours about him and girls and the PR with Kylie?
Last time I checked both Armie and Timmy were hurting each other. Mainly because they didn’t discuss boundaries. See photo 8 for what I pulled for Armie.at first he distanced himself and have his own “adventures” but these two has a hard time letting each other go
Q: will Elizabeth do anything to disrupt their relation?

She will not be happy if they are together again. She thought they were done. She will continue to be petty, like trying to use the kids, preventing Armie to go away too far or too much, I don’t feel anything major at the moment. She might be paid, or is going to be paid in future. She wants Armie back, still. Not because she loves him, but because she is jealous about him moving on.

Tim shakes and shakes and shakes in the passenger seat. Tears leak from his eyes with no sign of stopping. His chest heaves up and down. He’s struggling to catch a full breath. 
“Tim, please,” Dick places one hand on Tim’s shoulder and other grips the steering wheel of the Batmobile. “Tim!”
“Please…stop. No more,” he moans.

Dick sees the bay doors to the Batcave opening. He slams on the gas pedal even harder. Every second counts. 
“We’re almost there, Timmy. Stay with me now.”
The Batmobile zooms into the Batcave. Dicks smashes on the brake, and the vehicle jerks to a violent stop. 
This is the moment when Dick first feels it. A throbbing pain in his lower abdomen. 
No time to check it out, it’s probably just a scratch. 
Batman flings the passenger door open. He reaches in to drag Tim’s thrashing body out. There’s so much chaos. Tim’s still screaming. Batman barks orders at Alfred. Machines are beeping incessantly. 
Batman struggles to get Tim into the medical bay. Tim’s screams pierce the air and the bats in the cave respond with screams of their own. 
Dick attempts to run towards the medical bay to assist, but is momentarily stopped by the stiffness in his hip. He can only helplessly hobble towards the frenzied scene. Batman tries to place Tim in the gurney, but Tim is fighting back.
“What’s happening?! What are you doin’ to me?!” Tim continues to struggle with Batman. The fear toxin was coursing through his veins and wreaking havoc on his nervous system. The normally logical and practical Tim Drake was no match for the horror and intensity of Scarecrow’s fear toxin. Tim kicks and kicks, until he finally lands one into his mentor’s upper thigh.
“Oomph!” Batman grabs his thigh in response to the blooming pain. A big mistake. Tim takes advantage of Batman’s injured state and hops off the gurney. He lands on his feet before he feels hands clawing on his shoulders. He reels backwards and his upper body makes contact with the gurney again. Alfred desperately latches onto Tim’s shoulders, trying to get the young man back onto the gurney completely. 
Dick watches the scene unfold. If only he could get there faster. He could feel his heartbeat pulsing in his abdomen. 
Batman firmly grabs onto Tim’s ankles and drags them onto the gurney. Alfred strains to pull Tim to the top, so that his entire body finally occupies it. The two men quickly make do of the restraints and attach them to Tim’s limbs. 
“No! No! No! No! No! No! No! What’s happening?!” Tim screeches. His voice is higher than it’s ever been before, reaching a decibel that probably wasn’t humanly possible under normal circumstances.
After what feels like an eternity, Dick finally reaches the medical bay. He’s out of breath, gulping in air. Uh-oh, his lower body feels like it’s being poked by a million tiny needles. Dick shakily grabs onto a nearby machine. Batman looks over his shoulder and shouts, “Get the antidote! Now! Get 10 cc’s of diazepam, too!” 
Dick swallows and attempts to steady his posture. His vision has speckles of black. But he has his orders. He fumbles around to the freezer that stores the required medications. He grabs a needle and pokes the antidote’s vial, extracting the medication. He sets the needle on top of the fridge for just a moment. He attempts to grab another needle for the diazepam, but…but he misses? 
What? The stack of needles is right there. Just grab one.
His second attempt is pointless, too. He sees the needles. He knows he needs to grab one of them. But when he tries to bring his hand to the stack, his hand misses it entirely. 
“Nightwing! What are you doing back there? I need those needles now!” 
Dick takes in a deep breath. Tim needs him. Batman needs him. Poor Alfred needs him. Dick uses every ounce of energy in his body to focus on the stack of needles in front on him. He grunts as he lifts both hands up, and slams them down onto the needles. Dozens of them scatter onto the floor and outside of their container.
Whatever, it’s not like Batman can’t afford some more. 
Using both hands, Dick grabs one of the needles that managed to stay in its rightful container. He sticks it into the diazepam vial and draws out the required amount. His vision blurs for a few seconds. 
Get it together, Dick. 
He shakes his head and his vision fully returns. He grabs both needles and wobbles to Batman’s side. Batman snatches both needles from Dick and injects them into one of Tim’s popping veins. 
A few seconds pass before Tim’s breathing drastically slows. His eyes nearly pop out of his head and his tongue slightly hangs out from his mouth, but the EKG monitor that Alfred managed to attach to him shows that his heart rate is steadily returning to normal levels.
“The diazepam is working,” Batman begins. Tim is still jerking slightly and muttering to himself. “The antidote will take a few hours to work.” 
Just go to sleep. Dick can suddenly feel the lack of energy in himself. His head lolls to the side, but he continues fighting to stay upright. He can only wheeze, as Batman and Alfred continue fussing over Tim’s shell-shocked body. 
Five seconds. Just close your eyes for five seconds. Okay, he can do that. Dick closes his eyes and counts in his head. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. 
His eyes snap open and his heart begins to race. 
Five more seconds, please. He closes his eyes again. One. Two. Three. His abdomen becomes unbearably hot. He loses count. One. Two. Four. Has it been more than five seconds? Dick hears the warbling voices of Batman and Alfred. One. Two. Three. His body shakes. Why is he shaking? His wound is searing now. 
“Dick!” 
Who’s calling his name? He can’t pinpoint the voice, but it sounds familiar.
“Dick!”
He feels hands grabbing at him. His eyes are still closed. One. Three. Is it time to open his eyes? No, not yet. It’s hasn’t been five seconds yet.
Dick feels like he’s falling in slow motion. His wound doesn’t even hurt anymore. He just feels tingles all throughout his lower body. 
“Ready the…” 
“…your eyes!”
“…losing blood…dammit Dick.”
Dick wants to chuckle. He knows that last disapproving voice belonged to Batman. What had he done wrong this time? He’ll have to find out once he wakes up.
Dick stands on the lawn, breathing in the fresh air. Even though Dick no longer lives at the manor, he still feels a sense of belonging on the sprawling estate. This is where he began his second chance at life after his parents were murdered. And it’s also where he nearly lost his life, just 48 hours prior.
He hears crunching grass behind him. Someone is approaching. Dick doesn’t mind. In fact, he’d love some company just about now. He’ll be out of commission for at least two weeks due to his stab wound. Two weeks to recover and relax and just live in the moment. Take time to rediscover who Dick Grayson was rather than living as Nightwing. Perhaps he could convince Alfred to set up a picnic around here. Ooh, Dick was craving Alfred’s famous homemade pecan-
“Hey.”
Dick’s thoughts are interrupted by Tim’s soft intrusion. Dick turns to look at his brother. His friend. His coworker. Tim’s arm is in a cast and his face has splotches of red and purple across it. 
Dick smiles genuinely. “Hey. How long will you be out of action?”
Tim sheepishly looks down. “Batman says at least two months. My arm was pretty badly broken.”
Dick can sense Tim’s disappointment. How could he not? Dick saw himself in the young man. He remembered his own strong drive to work and to never take breaks when he was younger. To live up to the glorious Batman who never seemed to take a day off. 
“It’ll fly by,” Dick replies. “I’m out for a while, too.”
“Yeah, I heard.”
“Hmm.”
The two stood facing one another in complete silence. Not an uncomfortable silence, but a necessary silence. Tim gathers the confidence to speak his mind and Dick gathers the confidence to apologize.
“I’m sorry,” Dick begins. “It should’ve been me. I should’ve protected you. I didn’t see him…Scarecrow, I mean.”
Tim shakes his head. “Please, don’t. It’s not your fault.”
“Yes, it is Tim. It should always be me rather than you. I failed-,”
“Don’t,” Tim sharply exhales. “Don’t you dare say that you failed me.”
The pair fall into silence once more. Moments pass before Tim speaks up again.
“They told me what happened. You passed out. You were...bleeding out.”
Dick stood there, unable to reply. What could he say?
“You didn’t fail me when I got gassed with the fear toxin. It’s a risk I take every time I become Red Robin. I risk my body and my life. I know what I signed up for.” Tim takes a shaky breath in. “But, what I didn’t sign up for, was you dying on me. You didn’t fail me when I got gassed, but you damn near failed me when you almost died from blood loss.”
The whites of Tim’s eyes turn red as he struggles to hold his tears back. “You don’t know, do you?”
Dick’s not sure what Tim is getting at, but he feels like he’s a child again being scolded. He swallows before nervously replying, “What do you mean?”
Tim sniffles and looks his big brother directly in his eyes. “You don’t know how much you mean to us? What you mean tome?”
Dick’s heart drops to his tummy. His looks at Tim’s teary eyes and feels his own eyes moisten. 
“You don’t always have to be strong, Dick,” Tim whispers. He looks at his feet and kicks a nearby pebble away. “You don’t always have to put others first. Without you, we would all fall apart.”
“No,” Dick quivers his lip. “You are my first priority. Don’t worry about me. You and Jason and Damian, and Cassandra and-,”
Tim laughs dryly. “No, Dick, You are your own first priority. Because if you don’t take care of yourself, how can you come back to us?”
Now Dick is really speechless. Did he get just lectured? By his baby brother? Is this really Tim?
“I’ve lost a lot of people in my life, Dick. I just can’t…I can’t lose you, too.”
Dick feels a throbbing pressure once again. Not in his abdomen, but right in his heart. Dick sniffles and holds his arms open, and Tim walks right into his embrace. It’s definitely awkward. Tim isn’t normally a hugger. But this is the moment that Dick has been waiting for, for what feels like an eternity. 
“I can’t believe my baby bro just lectured me. What has the world come to?” Dick murmurs.
Tim snorts and playfully shoves Dick away. “Yeah, sometimes you’re the one that needs a talking to. Just…please take better care of yourself.”
Dick nods. How can he argue with Tim? How can he deny his brother anything? Dick and Tim begin to walk side-by-side back to the manor. Dick slings an arm over Tim’s shoulder. “You don’t know how to hug. Good thing I’ll be around for a few weeks to teach you how.”
Tim groans and Dick’s laugh permeates the air. 
Yeah, a few weeks of rest will do them just fine.

Using the four pillars of play in RPG design.
Talking aloud to myself here on how to design an RPG.
As designers, we want to have a game encompass everything. The intrinsic nature to add on more mechanics for more edgecases is inescapable - but it leads to a bloated mess that is unnavigable and unapproachable. The more the game bloats, the more errors wil creep in, and the harder the game will be to play. Not to mention the fact that the game in practice will on average be about 60% by the book and 40% homebrew, and in the moment judgements from the GM.

An example of design without boundaries.
...So what do we do? How do we set boundaries that will help deliver the RPG experience we want to create, without being too restrictive? The answer is quite simple: Consider the audience.
An RPG - or any game (or product) for that matter - should have a targeted audience or user experience. Why would you play this? How does it feel to play? Who wants that experience? And to help define that, I would like to use the "four pillars of RPGs" that I mused on before.

There can actually be a lot of pillars. Like a lot a lot - each game may make their own pillars for specific key elements.
All games have Roleplay, Combat, Exploration, and my handcrafted fourth, "Meta." All RPGs have these pillars in varied amounts, and players focus on them in different amounts as well.
A player who focuses on the pillar of Roleplay will be interested in character creation, sure, but the hook for them will likely be the art and setting of the system, giving their imagination fertile ground to play in in the first place. A player focused on Combat will be more concerned with the mechanics - how one goes about interactions and "winning" the game portions of an RPG. An Exploration focused player will equally be interested in both the setting and the mechanics needed to interact with it - their own character is almost ancillary to the point. A player focused on "Meta" is one who spends more time playing the game away from the table than at it. This is the player who theorycrafts, homebrews, and has thirteen new characters written up by the second session.
So lets give these pillar-players some quick names:
-The Roleplayer, who wants to tell their story.
-The Gamer, who wants to win a challenge.
-The Explorer, who wants to find an experience.
-The Metagamer, who wants a toybox to build with.

The MTG classic Timmy, Johny, and Spike trio can also work - Timmy is an Explorer, Johny is a Roleplayer, Spike the Gamer.
Our roles defined, how do they focus us in on the design front?
Let's start with the Roleplayer. They live for creative expression - they want a unique character with a unique story, living unique experiences. First and foremost, art will likely be their hook. Seeing a book on a shelf and saying "I want to go there!"
...But seeing as art is the packaging rather than specific design, let's start at character creation. For the Roleplayer, this should be robust, replete with options to express a specific character. Giving rules for backgrounds, a full set of skills, unique species complete with lore, etc. One thing I would specifically highlight would be giving a character flaws - either enforced or by choice. Giving a character a hangup is an especially juicy opportunity to have dramatic moments of either overcoming or failing due to a flaw.
Once the Roleplayer's character is created, it's time to play - and once again, the focus is on expression - so having many approaches to a problem is key. Sure, a fight might be a solution to a blockade, but so is stealth - and negotiations, and trickery, and going a different route, and and and... You get the point. Making a tool for every scenario is hard to do - and it puts a lot of pressure on the Game Master (if you have one) to be able to think on their feet - so when it comes to designing, a lot of the work comes down on the rules behind the GM's screen. Broad, flexible categories and tables that can be easily adapted to any situation the Roleplayer may suddenly think up. When they say "I want to drop a barrel on their head!" the GM needs the resources necessary to say "ah, yes, so that would be a difficult task with an improvised object, and will leave them restrained. Here's your roll."
Roleplaying in and of itsself is an important part of the Roleplayer's repetoire, but it is not the only thing. When designing for Roleplayers a robust system of speechcraft and influence is good, but is still secondary to having a system that is flexible over all situations.

A Roleplayer may or may not be a Bard. They would totally woo the dragon though.
Designing for the Gamer is simple enough. They play to 'win.' This is the person that skips over character creation to look at combat, then goes back to craft a barbarian specialized in in javelins because it's "optimal." They will put the actual moment-to-moment rules of a game to the test. Flexibility is less important than optimization, and they absolutely will call you out if something isn't balanced correctly. This is the player who wants spreadsheets, statlines, and the functional mechanics first and foremost. A description of Goblin society is far less important that their to-hit numbers and special moves.
And a Gamer is not limited to combat - they will want to win anything that has proper rules - as likely to create a master stone mason as a master swordsman, so long as there is a system of rules there - a "puzzle" to "solve." So designing for Gamers is a mater of making those puzzles - clear, up-front rules that work together well to present challenges directly to the players. While the Roleplayer requires GM-facing tables to handle creative solutions, the Gamer requires player-facing tables to figure out the logical solutions themselves.

The Explorer isn't so singularly focused. The explorer isn't here to express themsleves or state their mastery, but are here to find things out. They love the "aha!" moments and shiny trinkets found at the bottom of deep wells. And as such, they may well take the most effort to cater to.
It may be counterintuitive, but the Explorer likes to not know things. While a Gamer prefers all the cards out on the table, the Explorer would rather figure them out by trial-and-error. So rules that can hide information from the players are important. Rather than revaling a map, have rules for map-making. Rules for identifying magic items. Monster descriptions to present, instead of a stat block to reveal. Doing all of this essentially doubles the writing, as you need both the functional and the descriptive angles of all things.
Rules that further complicate discovering things will also be intriguing to the explorer - an expendable torch mechanic when going underground, weather mechanics that complicate overland travel, exposure mechanics for hazardous areas and materials - overcoming these obstacles to plumb even greater depths is the ideal gameplay loop for the Explorer.
And that's before considering all the cool trinkets and baubles that a player will unearth during their explorations - a full catalogue of unique places and items should be held in reserve to ensure that there's always more to explore, and to explore for.

Why? Because it's there, of course. Why not?
And finally we get to the Metagamer. The gamer that plays away from the table as much as at it. The player who has a mounting pile of backup characters every single session. The player who loves to ask themselves "what if?"
This player loves all the rules, all the charts, and all the fluff. They resemble all three of the other players at points, but their focus is elsewhere. For them, the rules are a toybox full of interesting things to mash together. Character creation is less self-expression, more an experimental labrotory. Combat isn't a puzzle to solve, but a showcase to put the biggest, coolest thing in. A list of items isn't something to be discovered, but a catalogue of things to order.
The Metagamer cares less for the specific moment-to-moment gameplay or optimal solutions, but more for the thrill of making what could be the biggest or fastest or coolest things that could possibly be. So designing for enthusiastic Metagamers is less a choice of what systems are necessary, and more a practice at making sure that all systems are linked. Exploration can give things that are useful in Roleplay, and Roleplay effects Combat, and so on. A Metagamer will gleefully run away with the idea of fall damage being added to an attack, even if no fights ever happen at the bottom of cliff faces - merely because a 300-foot piledriver sounds awesome.

My next character is a cybernetic luchador bear that can deliver a flying lariat at mach two.
I would be remiss not to mention the Game Master as well - as the teacher, and most likely the purchaser of the RPG, they are the first player you must woo over to your system. But other than making sure the game is understandable and laid out in a way that is easy to reference, there's not really any focus to give to specific components - a GM may tend towards the "Gamer" or "Metagamer," but they are as likely to have traits from any of the player pillars. So to make that initial sale, the focus should be on clarity - "THIS GAME IS MADE FOR THIS PURPOSE." Once a GM knows what the game is about, they can then ask if it fits their style.

Now, most players are a mix of these traits. Rarely does a Gamer not have an element of the Metagamer. Explorers can be as much a Roleplayer as a Gamer, and in certain scenarios players may be all four at once. But by choosing a pillar to focus on, or at least prioritise, we start to set our limits.
If a rule or system does not serve to cater towards our focus, and is not necessary for the game to function, it should not be given priority. Does a game for Roleplayers need a detailed list of poisons when a simple "poisoned" effect will convey the emergency? Does a system for Gamers need four pages of background lore? Do you really need that system for playing the stock market?
There is no perfect guideline for me to present here. But it is still good, every once in awhile, to hold your system at arm's length and say, "Who, really, is this game for? And does what I'm doing accomplish that?"
At the very least, it's helped me trim the fat a few times.
