Reunited with Shelly! Few weeks ago she randomly texted me asking to eat together because it’s been awhile (I haven’t seen her since my birthday actually)... I was so thrilled LOL. We went to eat at Liuyishou Richmond and tried their spicy & coconut chicken soup bases. We definitely ordered a bit too much but it was yum regardless. Meat in spicy broth was AMAZING and meat just went down so smoothly. Coconut water in the coconut chicken broth was quite sweet but I love the strong juice flavour - also the real coconut meat was yyds literally so god tier so yummy I love coconuts. Also got free plum juice with the meal because I had a coupon hehehe. A successful meal! LEFT SUPER FULL.

Deaths of Tim Drake

Part of the Batfam Death Project.

Unfortunately, Tim is wrong. At the time of the above panel (Robin War 1, 2015), Tim had died twice. To be fair, though, this being New 52 where Tim was never even actually Robin, they have presumably unhappened or, at least, been forgotten. (However, current canon is that all timelines have happened, so they still count.)

Tim has died three times and visited an afterlife once, if only barely. There are also a further three occasions when he might have arguably died, though it is not shown on panel.

Total time dead: a few days.

Verifiable deaths

1. Killed by the Joker (Emperor Joker, 2000)

Tim was killed by the Joker after Joker stole reality-altering powers from Mxyzptlk and remade the universe to his liking.

By the look of his corpse he was shot several times in the chest, possibly with a machine-gun.

Time dead: At least a few days. By the look of the corpses, Dick died before Tim – his body is noticeably more bloated – but neither has been dead more than about a week or two. On the other hand, Joker has powers over reality here, so he could have them appear at whatever stage of decomposition he wants.

2. Drowned in Blüdhaven (Robin 2:145, 2006)

Tim drowned in a water attack by a villain called Monsoon during an attack on Blüdhaven by a large number of meta villains, just hours before Blüdhaven was bombed by Chemo.

He was resuscitated by Laura Fell, the Warlock’s Daughter (his school friend Darla returned from the dead), who says she used CPR (the resuscitation is not shown on-page).

Of course, the person who gave her the CPR that didn’t help when she died was Tim, so that’s a hell of a thing to bring up just now.

Time dead: unclear, but probably in the order of minutes – Laura is grabbing him and pulling him out as he’s losing consciousness, so it can’t be long.

3. Electrocuted by Evil Future Tim (Detective Comics 1:966–967, 2017)

Tim’s Evil Future Batman Self (pulled from the future by Dr Oz) helped Tim escape Dr Oz’s extradimensional prison, where they were both imprisoned. When they got back to Gotham, Evil Future Batman Tim incapacitated Red Robin Tim with a powerful electric shock so he could go and kill Batwoman without interference.

Tim staggered to a nearby hospital, removing the more recognisable parts of his Red Robin outfit (which at this point in time actually looks just like his Robin outfit) on the way, and collapsed in the doorway. His heart stopped and he had to be revived by defibrillation.

Time dead: a minute or two at most.

Bonus extra deaths

(Implied, inferrable, ambiguous and arguable deaths)

1. Possibly died briefly during his splenectomy (Red Robin 5, 2009)

As Red Robin, Tim got stabbed in the spleen, and almost died from blood loss. He was picked up and treated by the League of Assassins, and woke up next to a Lazarus Pit. He was told, however, that he had not been resurrected, nor been submerged in the Pit for healing, but had only undergone surgery.

That may be so. It still leaves open the possibility that Tim did briefly die on the operating table and was resuscitated by more normal medical processes. It’s also possible that the White Ghost was lying by omission and, even if Tim wasn’t submerged in the Pit, some Lazarus Water was involved in the operation.

Time dead: Maybe a minute or two, if anything.

2. Arguably died when he was shot by a hundred drones at once (Detective Comics 1:940, 2016)

Jacob Kane (Batwoman’s dad and Bruce’s maternal uncle) had a plan to take out members of the League of Shadows (an offshoot of the League of Assassins) with targeted drone strikes. But the drones would have potentially killed a lot of other people too. Unable to actually disable the drones, Tim managed to hack them and reprogram them to all fire on him instead.

This was absolutely suicide, and it absolutely would have killed him had Dr Oz not spirited him away to his extradimensional prison. But you could argue that Tim did actually die at this point. Did he get transported just before the drones hit, or did his body get disintegrated and then reconstituted from his soul (which would count as death) in the prison?

Against the former, surely it wouldn’t have been hard for the other Bats to spot if his body had disappeared a millisecond before the lasers hit, and the panel appears to show his body beginning to disintegrate. Tim remembers the missiles hitting him.

On the other hand, when Tim manifests in the prison he is still as injured as he was before, with a swollen cheek and a bloody nose, and you’d think if his body was reformed it would come back fully healed.

Dr Oz’s answer is ambiguous.

Time dead: unclear. If he died at all, it was probably for moments.

3. Probably died in Death Metal along with everyone else (Death Metal 7, 2021)

Tim probably died in battle when the Dark Multiverse invaded and destroyed all the worlds of the multiverse. All the remaining heroes came together in a hopeless fight against an army of their worst nightmares, including an apparently never-ending swarm of groblins (mindless evil Jokerised Robins led by the Robin King, an evil child Bruce Robin).

Tim’s death isn’t shown on panel and neither is his dead body, but he is definitely in the group of Bats standing ready to fight (left, next to Spoiler):

As with Cass, Tim is likely to have died here, but he could have just been fighting elsewhere when we see Evil Child Bruce Robin taunt Batman over the fact that everyone is dead. In any case, everyone is fine again when Wonder Woman persuades the Creators to remake the multiverse.

Time dead: unclear; might be up to an hour, or longer if it takes longer to remake the world.

Afterlife visits

1. Pulled to the edge of the Abyss (Young Justice 1:19, 1999)

So apparently one of Greta’s (Secret’s) powers is the ability to create a portal to the Abyss – a rather horrific realm of the dead – within herself. She basically gathers people into herself to pull them in to the afterlife. She can also use this power to teleport/transport people by taking them through the Abyss – though it is not pleasant. She does this for Young Justice when Mount Justice blows up with them all inside it. In Greta’s internal portal, they experience falling into darkness, being burnt up, and being frozen and shattered. All the time, Greta is laughing cruelly.

And then they get spat out into a forest in the rain.

Greta is at pains to insist that she didn’t actually take them in to the Abyss itself, just the edge of it within herself. But it was still obviously absolutely nightmarish for all of them.

Time in in Greta’s internal afterlife portal: moments, or an eternity.

2. In the Abyss again (Young Justice 1:48, 2002)

Anita’s dad was tortured and left to die. Anita got there just too late, and then leapt into Greta’s internal afterlife portal to try and pull him out.

Ray and Slobo jumped in to get Anita back, and, after a little hesitation (unlike the others, he had been in before and knew the Horrors that awaited), Tim went in too.

Like last time, Tim experiences The Horrors, but Slobo (who says he has an understanding with death) stabilises him. They, with Ray, protect Anita from bat-monsters while she tries to reach her father.

Anita doesn’t get her dad back, but she does get to say goodbye to him. (This doesn’t help.) Everyone other than Anita’s dad is spat back out of Greta’s portal in the same place a short while after they left.

JOHN EGBERT’S GIFT UNBOXING VIDEO LIVE UNEDITED

‘So much sweet loot. You'd almost think it was simultaneously your birthday, AND Christmas or something. Of course you know that is ridiculous and could never conceivably happen.’ (p.1069)

Today’s update – which was posted on December 21-22, near Christmas, but is set on April 13, John’s birthday – is John blatantly ignoring Rose’s orders and making himself a bunch of sweet loot. The story has laid the groundwork for John alchemizing further, so I think this could still work for someone who’s reading the archive and/or who doesn’t celebrate Christmas – but it’s clearly set up as a real time, shared culture experience.

The things John makes apparently came from an 80 item (!!) MSPA forums poll, with other readers voting on potential alchemy combinations. That’s cute because it’s like we’re collectively deciding what Christmas gifts to give him. Unfortunately I can’t find the poll to see the other options.

I’m going to list off everything John makes for completonism, and then drill down on a couple specific items and discuss the alchemy process generally.

John thinks that his Serious Business Goggles make him ‘look way cooler, like one of the kids from SPY KIDS or something.’ He then quotes the tagline ‘REAL SPIES… only smaller’ which I thought was a classic Homestuck incorrect quote, but a quick search reveals that this was the actual tagline for Spy Kids 1 (2001). I haven’t seen that movie but I HAVE seen Spy Kids 3: Game Over (2003), which is a very Homestuck relevant movie. So I’m planning to rewatch that in the next couple days and see how the game in that movie compared to John’s experiences playing Sburb.

John wearing a bland business suit didn’t feel right to me. It felt like he was playing a part, either dressing up like a movie character or dressing up like his dad because the house feels empty without him, and John feels like he has to step into the ‘man of the house’ role. Now that he’s customizing the suit with the green slime ghost and the possibility of playing 52-card pickup at any moment, this feels like a John outfit. Any suit is still a type of clothing that has a lot of cultural associations, but John showing some identity through his clothes is still meaningful, and the teal looks good on him.

The Cosbytop is a very unfortunate reference and I don’t support Bill Cosby in any way, but the connotations are accidental. From John’s perspective, this person plays a movie character he looks up to. John loves the movie Ghost Dad, but has defaced its poster with ‘IDIOT [R SLUR] DEAD FATHER’. It seems like something John’s dad should have noticed and maybe discussed with John, but instead he apparently ignored it and kept on watching movies with John. I am starting to think that a lot of John’s problems come from his dad’s complete unwillingness to address things openly, which is a common, culturally ingrained trait of quite a few fathers.

And now John has made a computer themed after someone he sees as a good dad, literally creating his own new father figure to guide him through important activities, alchemizing a dad replacement. So there’s a huge difference between John’s conscious and unconscious opinions of Elliot Hopper (the protagonist of Ghost Dad), and he’s unwilling to think through that – he takes a moment to think ‘lousy goddamn stupid subsconscious!’ but immediately moves on. I think John is less able to compartmentalize his feelings towards his actual dad, but they’re just as conflicted.

In and around the SWEET LOOT, we actually learn more about alchemy (although it’s easy to miss in the excitement). John is now using overlapping card && combinations, leading to punched cards with only a few holes, and double punched || combinations, leading to punched cards with a lot of holes. The hammer/pogo combination is the only one where we’ve seen both options. I think this is a missed opportunity – John should have tried Problem Sleuth Game || Hammer and seen if it also cost a ridiculous amount of grist.

The pogo hammer cost 10 build grist and 16 shale, while the hammerhead pogo cost 5 build and 20 shale – the same types of grist for both, but the numbers are different. I’m not sure how an item’s grist cost and types are calculated, or if it’s possible to predict that – but most items John has tried to make, he’s had the right types of grist for. So maybe the items in a player’s house are linked to the grist they collect in the early game, while other items John might discover on his journey (or perhaps on Prospit??) will use grist that doesn’t appear until the late game. The cost could relate to the number of combined items, except the butchered rocket pack (4 combined items) only cost 4 build and 8 shale.

On page 1064, John figures out how to ‘subtract’ one item from another, making a simpler item instead of a more complex one. This is super smart of him, as he accounts for all possible ways the subtraction could work, tries them in turn, and finds which one is right. I want to give John big props for being so smart, but also highlight how different the items from the other combinations are – punch cards with a single hole difference can yield a potted plant, a painting of a horse attacking a football player, and a Ghost Dad movie poster. So it’s not possible to change a single hole to make a similar but different item; there’s a randomization process preventing that.

I also wonder if there’s a maximum number of items that can be combined – John says that by alternating && and || combinations, the total number of holes will stay relatively consistent, but surely there’s a point where combining enough complex items loops back around to making something really simple. Just due to the limited number of hole combinations available, there’s a theoretical limit to how weird this can get, and I think it’d be funny if John combined the Wise Guy Slime Suit with the Hellacious Blue Phlegm Aneurysm Gushers and ended up with a simple kitchen spoon, because he’s hit the limit.

I understand why Rose wants to save the grist for building John’s house, but most of the items he’s made are genuinely useful – the new weapons are essential, the healing gushers are really smart for if Nannasprite isn’t around, and the serious business goggles will make it WAY easier to keep in touch with Rose without the PDA getting lost in John’s sylladex. Sburb/Skaia is a somewhat malevolent entity, so while this is a fun happy update, I can’t help but wonder if Sburb is trying to sow discord between friends by giving the server and client player two different goals, but a singular resource. Even if it’s not malicious, it’s a trial by fire for this friendship.

Was going through some personal shit so it was hard to enjoy my last full day here. Basically no plans were executed so it was kind of a waste of day but also I lowkey ran out of places to go. Cancelled a bunch of places I didn't think was worthy to go but I think I was just really tired from the week of hardcore walking 20k steps at theme parks. Mostly just rested on this day. Went to see Urban lights again at night and it was way too crowded. Wanted to eat some conveyor belt sushi for dinner but the wait was too long so we just got take out lol. RIP.

Am I the only one who's noticed that Supergirl designs have been booty cheeks up until recently?

Here, just lemme show you.

Her Debut Suit:

This cover was recreated by somebody for those who can't tell. But it's the same cover and this is what I could pull up quickly. So this first suit is fine. Gets the job done. Doesn't feel gratitutious. It's a little safe, little unrefined. But that's what a first suit is for. The idea's out in the world. The cool part about comics is the fact that there's a revolving door of people with ideas to bounce off of yours. Let's have this be our baseline. 5/10

There's an interlude of suits here, but I can't find them all.

Crisis on Infinite Earths Costume

Apparently, Screenrant isn't fond of this suit, but I also trust Screenrant as much as I trust my local politician these days. So screw 'em. I think this design kind of rocks. I like how they clearly tried to evolve her look in a way that's different from Clark's while still having the baseline stay the same. I like how the cape goes into the crest. I'm even kind of a sucker for the stupid headband. My only complaint is the skirt feels a little too high which can cause a lesser artist to sexualize her, but, modern day comics have proven that you can prevent this problem by either making the skirt a litle longer, changing the skirt into those half skirt-half shorts thingies, or having Kara wear spandex beneath it. Overall, an admirable attempt at evolution. 7/10

Post Crisis Supergirl (and all adjacent designs)

I have these designs in order of "hate the most" to "hate the least". I absolutely DESPISE Kara's comic post-crisis look on literally every level. I hate how it feels like a cheerleader outfit. I hate how BLUE it all is. I hate how the outfit feels DESIGNED to be sexualized. It's just a bad look. Not just for her, but for feminist representation in comics as a whole. I have the same complaint for the other two. But Kara's first DCAU suit feels more homemade, which I'm fine with. Her second one has a fine enough color scheme. The skirt isn't frickin BLUE. But overall, it doesn't feel like a superhero design. It feels like the worst person you know in high school wanted to dress slutty to the Halloween party (which there's nothing wrong with that if you dressed up slutty in high school, nobody should've been perving on you anyways) and threw together a slapdash Supergirl outfit. 3/10. Uncreative for people literally PAID to be creative.

New 52 Supergirl:

A step in the right direction, but, not my personal favorite. I get that this suit is supposed to line up with the New 52 super costumes. HOWEVER, I just don't like the New 52 super designs. I just think it's too complicated. I admit this is a personal preference thing, but, I like my superhero designs simple. I believe that you've designed a superhero right when a child can draw one in class with relative ease. This costume is fine, I don't disparage its fans. It's just not for me. 5/10. Objectively not bad, just not for me.

Rebirth Suit:

A much BETTER step in the right direction. It takes all the notes I've given and streamlines it the best it can. It still feels like a CW suit, which is fine, but it's just a note. Can't really change or disparage it for that. I give it the "real solid" award. 7/10.

Woman of Tomorrow MK I:

Perfect. Perfection. No notes. I love the golden trimmings. I don't know if it's Bilquis Everly's design philosophy, but I love how her top is kinda baggy, I love the cape, I love everything about this suit. I love how her belt is kind of like a corset. It's helps to round out the colors well. Just absolutely perfect. 10/10. No notes. Do this.

Woman of Tomorrow MK II:

If you need to "modernize" the costume, then this gets the job done just fine. I'm not ecstatic about it, but I think y'all can tell that's just my preference when it comes to DC designs. I like them simple. I like my Superman to have trunks and look dorky. I like my Supergirl to follow suit. I am really fond of the cape collar. They did something like that in Superman Up in the Sky and I liked it there, too. Overall, solid, but not for me. 8.5/10.

Current Suit:

The epitome of fine. I'm still a believer that jackets are to the 2010's as pouches were to the 90's, but still fine. It's just missing something. Dan Mora typically has the sauce here (and he cooks with her design in World's Finest), but something here isn't clicking for me. 6/10.

Overall, Supergirl's designs didn't really begin to get good until recently. And that makes me sad.

I slept for four hours and woke up at 3am. my shift was 5-10am, they let us go home two hours early. my two lectures got cancelled bc the teacher didn't show up. I'm going to my boyfriend's place tomorrow, because he's playing a DJ set on a rave on Saturday, so posts might be sparse the next few days
