The Magic of Repetition
I'm stupid. To understand something I usually need to use a lot of sugar in my system just so I can focus on a particular topic but I've accepted that.
I've accepted that I won't be able to be as smart as I want so what I usually do to learn is just repetition. For example, if I'm learning Elixir and I don't understand Tuples, I'll read that part of the documentation 8357 times until I'm confident about it. That's how I learn. So that's what I'm doing again. Haha.
I'm trying to learn Elixir and Phoenix along with how to implement GraphQL with it. I have around 4 links for it, 1 for Elixir in text format, 1 for Elixir again but this time in video format, 1 for Phoenix in video format and 1 for GraphQL in text format.
Elixir text tutorial has 32 pages. So I've divided it into 5 for the weekdays. The chapters are like this 8, 6, 6, 6, 6; from Monday to Friday. Along that is the Videos for Elixir and Phoenix which is 20 minutes per day for the Elixir tutorial and 10 minutes per day for the Phoenix tutorial. For GraphQL there's 10 pages so I read 2 pages per day on it. With that said I can read and watch all of the resources that I have in 5 days and I'll repeat that until I'm confident which is most likely around 10 years of repetition.
Fun times.

House of Salt and Sorrows
Tumblr media
It seems that I'm on a slight YA kick this year which I'm okay with in all honesty because I find a lot of creativity and a more diverse plot in a lot of YA books, especially those of the fantasy or sci-fi variety.
House of Salt and Sorrows is a young adult horror fantasy about the Thaumas sisters and a curse that has been placed upon them, or so they believe. Three of the Thaumas sisters are dead, all seemingly accidental. However, Annaleigh, our protagonist and the now second eldest sister, is searching for answers because something seems amiss. As she investigates by asking too many questions and digging around in the last deceased sister's room, the rest of the sisters discover a door that allows them to attend balls and dance their nights away. But not everything is as it seems, though Annaleigh is the only one who sees that there is something wrong. Annaleigh鈥檚 dreams become nightmares and the answers to her questions seem farther and farther away with every night. With the help of a mysterious young sailor and her own determination, Annaleigh pushes her way to the truth amidst all the horrors.
I found myself enjoying this book more as it got closer to the end primarily because the things I thought I had figured out were only partly true while other pieces of the story surprised me. It was a solid blend of horror, suspense, and fantasy but I did find myself getting a bit bored by the moments where the mystery wasn鈥檛 really focused on. I can only take so much talk of dancing and balls and dating within a story that is supposed to be a horror before I get bored. I'm only human. It's also worth noting that this is a partial retelling of the The Twelve Dancing Princesses, a fairytale collected and published by the Brothers Grimm.
Regardless, I do recommend this book if you're looking for something that's a fantasy horror set in a Victorian world.
