shauna had begrudgingly allowed Lottie to stay at her house with the only compromise being the fact that Misty would watch over them. to make sure that they wouldn’t get up to anything ridiculous, and ensure that Lottie didn’t start blabbering about their time in the wilderness with her own child. oh how wrong she was to leave them home alone, she didn’t truly understand that there was no line her child wouldn’t cross to get information about her— about what happened out there.

an hour into the unplanned sleepover Callie drugged Misty, putting into a slumber so the two could discuss what really happened in the wilderness. she didn’t mean to be so nosey, but her mother was so closed off and wouldn’t speak to anyone about it, she pretended that it didn’t happen sometimes so that she could act like this perfect person. callie knew it wasn’t right, it wasn’t true, something happened out there and she wanted to know what.

placing her drink down, she turned to Lottie, no longer even acknowledging Misty’s slumped body next to her on the couch. “What happened out there to you guys? To… to my mom? Why is she like this now?” callie held her breath, begging for a reasonable explanation to come out of Lottie’s mouth. she wasn’t sure if she wanted to be right about her stupid theories of cannibalism or even something worse. lottie could only giggle at the little girl’s naivety, assuming her mother to be innocent? children. “Everyone was terrified of your mother. Well her and her girlfriend. Everyone thought I was the crazy one— harsh words I know but your mom and her girlfriend? They were fucking psychotic.”

that’s not what callie was expecting and it honestly caught her off guard, enough to force the drink out of her hand and onto the table and her body to slowly inch towards Lottie’s personal space. “Wait.. girlfriend? My mom was gay? Psychotic?” it was odd hearing such things come out about her own mother however she wouldn’t put it past her after the rabbit incident. “I think the more correct term would be bisexual, since she still dated and married Jeff, and had you of course. But everyone knew that her and Jackie were in love before her girlfriend even stepped into the picture. Doomed lovers if I’ve ever seen some.”

“Wait Jackie? My mom’s old best friend Jackie? If Jackie wasn’t her girlfriend then who was?” Lottie laughed at her, this time it was demeaning, it wasn’t a giggle or something playful. “You haven’t met the whole team, have you?”
