jeffshauna is incredibly real, and this is because shauna could sit jeff down and tell him “jeff i only married you because you’re the last existing piece of jackie and me hooking up with you senior year was a desperate attempt to get as close to her in the most socially acceptable way i could think of which was already deeply fucked with having you cheat on her with me because i thought chasing after her would be worse” and jeff would lean back in his chair and go “whoa. that’s a doozy.” then after he ruminates on it in silence for a couple minutes he would lean his chair back and get up and rummage through the fridge and go “okay well it’s almost dinner time. are you feeling hot dogs or bratwursts”

Okay so we know that teen Jeff and Shauna were sleeping together and we know that adult Jeff is Shauna Shipmans #1 SIMP and I was wondering what if Jeff liked Shauna first? What if Shauna was completely oblivious but Jackie wasn’t? What if Jackie noticed and became jealous? Not because JEFF liked Shauna but because Jeff liked SHAUNA and Shauna was Jackie’s, that stupid boy couldn’t have her aka Jackie going after Jeff was just her being gay and in love with her best friend. I think about this scene and "Jackie likes Poppies" a lot.

Jeff’s note seems to imply that he and Shauna were already hooking up, but her response makes me wonder what other advice she might have given him to help win over Jackie.

As Jackie's best friend, did she play Cyrano and help set them up? We know from the bedroom flashback that Jackie asked for her help early on, but what if she went further and guided Jeff through the early stages of dating?

After all, no one knew Jackie better than Shauna. So Jeff likely would've asked for help winning her over, and whether out of guilt or jealousy or both, Shauna agreed to help him.

I love the thought of picking out gifts for Jackie and planning dates she knows Jackie will enjoy, maybe even writing love letters and signing them as Jeff. To the extent that she's aware of her own feelings, the only socially acceptable way she can date Jackie herself is by proxy.

But more likely, she'd tell herself (and Jeff) that she's just being a good friend, and trying to make up for all the times she's been a bad friend. Jackie deserves the boyfriend of her dreams, and she'll do what it takes to turn Jeff into that boyfriend, even if it means doing everything herself.

Anyway, I tried writing this as a fanfic a little while back, but it turned out too sad, and I struggled to finish it. Maybe I will get back to it, but for now, I wanted to share the thought at least.

i find shauna and callie’s relationship so fascinating because i don’t entirely think shauna DOES see callie as jackie. i think she does a little, but more in the sense that she feels like she should be responsible for callie, but she can never quite do it right - same as with jackie. i think the main cause of their relationship being so tough is the wilderness baby. shauna physically can’t let herself get attached to callie because she doesn’t trust that she’s sticking around. it’s partly mental but also partly physical (ppd, ptsd etc). shauna never fully recovered from jackie, never really removed her from life in the way you usually do with someone who’s passed and so when she had callie, to shauna that was under the exact same circumstances as wb because she was still taking jeff from jackie and having a baby with her best friend+’s boyfriend.

as for the party scene, there’s definitely two factors - callie bears some physical resemblance to jackie (teenage girl, thin, midlength hair, big eyes) and is also wearing jackie’s uniform. shauna KNOWS it’s jackie’s uniform she’s seeing, and she KNOWS she hallucinates jackie, so the obvious presumption is (as she says) “jackie?”. we see her get angry with callie when she realises that she’s not jackie, which is think pretty much sums up their relationship.

shauna doesn’t see callie as jackie - she sees callie as the version of jackie that she could have been, the version of her firstborn that he could have been, except that the capacity of love and trust she had for both of them is gone and callie is just too late and just not the real thing.
