My 2024 Goal: 100 Books

My goal in 2024 is to read 100 books. I used to read all the time, but after teaching college for 7 years, I felt like I could only really read and enjoy reading during summers because I had so much work to do during the semesters that involved reading so. many. papers. But I decided to put my career on hold when I had my baby because I couldn't stand the thought of leaving him with a sitter while I worked. And now, voila - I have so much more time to read for fun. And boy, has it been fun.

So fun that I actually have been working the past several months to create a book log & reading tracker Google Sheet that I'm testing right now and planning on selling in the near future, but more about that in another post.

Anyway, enough about me. All this is to say that I am planning on reading 100 books in 2024. It's early September as I write this, and I'm reading book 69 (nice, I know) right now. I'm keeping track of my reading and stats on both The StoryGraph app (it is the single best book tracking app out there IMO, much better than GoodReads, and it's not connected to Amazon in any way, so that's a plus).

I'm also using my Google sheet I've been working on. I've also got a physical book journal that's part guided, part bullet that I'm very behind on (it's a lot easier to keep up with an app and a spreadsheet while a baby is sleeping than to get out my micron pens and brush markers and work on a physical journal). I also started doing mini book reviews on my main blog (@emachinescat if anyone is curious), but that ended up tapering off. And yes, I may have a book tracking and logging hyperfixation. I'm neurospicy and indulging in the obsession.

I've decided that I want to have a blog dedicated to my reading goals and longer form book reviews, first and foremost for myself. But if anyone else finds this blog and enjoys it, even better! Since I'm starting this so late in the year, I'll be playing catch up for a while, but hopefully I'll have all reviews posted for 2024 by the end of the year. We'll see.

Anyway, that's about it. I'll start writing reviews soon!

Comfy-vember 2024

6:30am. 

It’s quiet in the apartment. And dark. And still.

Ian settles in on the couch and stretches out long-ways facing the window, using the fluffy blanket to cover his legs and lap. He’s the only one awake. Everywhere, it seems. And in the quiet stillness, peace blooms in the center of his chest.

A new day is a new start. 

He always thought it was kinda bullshit, but it’s true. Just knowing that he’s no longer tied to the day before - everything that built up inside him as the hours added on, burying him - it’s a relief. 

He brings his coffee to his lips, enjoying a nice slow sip. There’s space to notice it all now. The pleasant sweetness of the creamer. The heat where the mug is pressed against his palm. The plushness of the blanket over his legs, and the pillow behind his back.

Today won’t be the perfect day, and he’s not gonna pretend like it will be. He’ll get anxious again. Stressed. Worried about the future. But in this moment, as the sun starts to peek over the pointed roof out the window…as the light begins to pour in, warming the long path of his outstretched legs from the toes up…there’s relief. 

He’s starting fresh.

Mickey will be up soon. And Ian will tell him all about this realization of his. And then maybe they’ll make breakfast together. Something slow and easy, the morning stillness spreading peacefully throughout little moments of his day.

Things will happen. Because that’s just how it goes sometimes. He’ll worry. Something will piss him off.  But eventually, the day will end because it always does. Another comforting guarantee. And then tomorrow morning he’ll be right back here, cradled in the quiet. 

Starting fresh.

A new day. 

Ian takes another sip of coffee, and then rests the mug in his lap, ready to welcome the sun as it begins to warm over his face.

May Review and June Reset

My meditation practice and affirmation habit have been getting better in May! I pray I continue this in June. I have been in a reading slump so I only finished two books. I really want to get into Bookstagram and start posting my book photos.

I have been making green smoothies with spinach, a banana, a green apple, and almond milk. It’s so good and kind of filling lol.

In June, I want to finish at least 5 books. That is a big goal but I just need to keep my butt off of YouTube and I’ll actually succeed lol.

I am going to be more active in my language learning habit, learning coding, and belly dancing. I also want to get back into qigong as well!

Here is to a productive and an amazing summer! ☀️

This year I read 53 novels in all.

(My personal rules are not to count re-reads within the same year and not to count comics or picture books- as I have a young child this would massively skew my numbers)

I failed hugely on clearing my tbr shelf, only reading 9 of them and ending up buying 44 other books rather than just focusing on the ones I already had, but this is a consequence of living somewhere with a wealth of amazing secondhand bookshops, so I’m not too upset about it. In resolving to definitely clear the shelf this year, I’ve made the unfortunate discovery that there are exactly 53 books on the unread shelf now, so if I was to clear it this year I would probably not be able to buy anything new.

Anyway, I’ll have a go, and will take suggestions as to what to read first, any thoughts? (Not pictured- a handful on new hardbacks)
