2024 Fic Round Up

I have posted 12 fics on Ao3 this year! I’m amazed. I truly thought I would post maybe half of what I did in 2023, which was 13! I’m going to go ahead and assume I won’t post as much as this next year as my work life continues to go hoo-ha bananas busy, but writing Tarlos fic is still my favourite thing. I’m super excited with the AU I’m working on currently, so that’s definitely one for 2025!

Something I’ve really enjoyed this year is writing fic because of gifts, organized exchanges, prompts and sparking ideas with friends. Fics that wouldn’t exist without others. It’s reinforced for me how this is a creative community and it’s wonderful to be part of it. Art begets art!

im not sure why i started feeling unsatisfied with all my fics from this year the past few days but i did for some reason which is why i didnt do this immediately.

Henry George Edward James Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor and Alex Claremont-Diaz Hate Weddings | for the New Years RWRB gift exchange, written for @sugdenlovesdingle. 3,178 words.

synopsis: a wedding, a bet, a fight, and another ruined wedding cake.

second strike | 911 Lone Star. 540 words.

synopsis: Carlos is never wrong. Missing moment: Episode 1x03 - Texas Proud. Carlos asks TK out.

February

better get a love | 911 Lone Star, written based off some Valentine's Day prompts from @paperstorm, though I never finished, sigh. 2,773 words so far.

synopsis: Five times Carlos didn’t understand the hype of Valentines Day, and one time he did.

March

halted beginnings | 911 Lone Star. first one beta'd by @goldenskykaysani. 1,410 words. plus, a long back and forth between @liminalmemories21 and i in the comment section about the lazy writing of season 4 lol.

synopsis: After the ice storm, things were better. Carlos gets engaged, and forgets something important.

why | 911 Lone Star. written from a tumblr prompt from @lemonlyman-dotcom. 1,227 words.

synopsis: He wishes a lot of things were different. Like, why was he such a good person? Why was he such a good husband? A good friend? A good partner? -- Carlos surprises TK with a gift. He really wishes he hadn't.

Staring at ghosts | 911. probably my favorite thing ive written, thought it's also unfinished. 1,118 words so far.

synopsis: Haunted by what ifs, Buck struggles in his relationship with Tommy over the course of a stormy weekend.

last resort at the apple store | 911. originated in a discord because someone mentioned something about the 217 keeping tommy's phone away from as well. unfinished. 682 words so far.

synopsis:

Buck desperately needs a phone. So does Tommy.

December

sail away with me | 911. in my sad bucktommy angst era. part 1 of divorce au. 443 words.

i've known you a long time | 911 Lone Star. written for the Tarlos Secret Santa gift exchange for @lutavero. 1,599 words.

synopsis: On Christmas Eve, Carlos remembers a figure from his past, and meets it again in his present.

2024 Fic Round Up

My beloved @puckdoll tagged me in the fic round up! Unfortunately, I have over 115 works posted from this year alone on my main Ao3 account so I didn’t want to spam the dashboard.

Started off the year with a gross threesome! I think Adam should suffer <3 This originally started differently with more about Adam walking home, but it was so BORING that I cut the entire thing. The first lines I came up with were Adam not wanting to roll onto his stomach because he was overstimulated, which set up my theme of the fic nicely :)

February:

The fic I’d been wanting to write for MONTHS!! I think young Cary Elwes is gorgeous jailbait, and I couldn’t think of a good enough set-up until the Bulletproof exchange. I miss the era of fandom where people shipped actors as different characters, so it was lovely to picture older Adam ruining young Lawrence’s throat.

A special birthday omegaverse gangbang fic for Monty! Sometimes you just need to destroy Adam and get him all covered in cum as a treat for your bestie. I couldn’t figure out if I wanted Logan to appear in this or not, so he’s technically there, but hidden. Also had to slip in some breeding kink because hnng hot.

First non Saw fic and shortest of them all! I really love this drabble, and I’m annoyed it didn’t get enough love. I think the kiss description is good, and the contrast between Alecto’s POV and what Gideon is saying works well.

My first Passenger fic, and it’s a 4k fic about Randy getting railed! I never disappoint. Honestly loved writing this, and I hadn’t realised that other people enjoyed it as well until I realised it was being recced. I tried really hard to “get” Benson’s voice as I was writing this, I found it hard to describe his sing-song way of speaking. I also got really into blowjobs where the cock fucks the side of the mouth so included that in there >:)

June:

I LOVE this stupid femslash poly au that I’ve come up with, and I could write thousands of words based in this universe. I think Alison works perfectly as a mean domme, and I know she and Lauren are the hottest dyke couple in Saw City. I enjoy reading BDSM aus (thanks hockey fandom) but I don’t know how good I am at writing them. 

July:

yield the need A Castle for Christmas (Movie 2021) Myles/Thomas (A Castle for Christmas)

I forced Becky to watch A Castle for Christmas last year, and unfortunately, she thinks it’s the best movie ever made. We came up with a very in-depth backstory for Thomas and Myles’ relationship that hits all our buttons (Scotland, repressed homosexuality, teenagers rutting all over the place) so I had to write a fic for the Battleship Exchange. I loveeee writing older men tackling their sexuality and getting their rocks off.

August:

cherry tree Delicious in Dungeon Senshi/Chilchuck Tims

The fact that there is SO LITTLE Senshi/Chilchuck fic is a crime. I really wanted to hit the fisting tags for Battleship Exchange, along with hitting my own size kink desires. This fic literally spilled out of me - I honestly think I wrote it in about an hour in a fugue state. I also never write about men’s balls and wanted to include it in this fic because I know what the Senshi fuckers want >:)

September:

Selachimorpha Jaws (Movies) Martin Brody/Matt Hooper

Another fic where I had a VIBE in my head that I was really trying to pin down - Hooper sweating in the bar and catching sight of Brody and realising he’s in love. I also think the title works really well, Selachimorpha is the scientific name for sharks and I remember my beloved poetry professor telling me to always use latin/scientific words in my work. Shout out to *REDACTED*, sorry for not replying to your facebook messages.

October:

I only posted two fics in October (damn my full time job!) but I did love this horny Original Work for the RelationShipping exchange. My recip was very into mind control, so this was my first foray into that kink and I think it worked well >:) This fic also got me blocked by some mutuals because they didn’t realise I was a freak!

November:

a softer jigsaw trap Saw (Movies) Lawrence Gordon/John "Jigsaw" Kramer

I wrote SO MUCH for Fic In A Box, but I just had to choose these softer world inspired panels. I feel like I worked the hardest on these - I practised first with some Hoffman panels, did a lot of editing of screenshots to create new scenes between Lawrence and Jill, and dusted off my old Photoshop skills! It was also SO MUCH FUN, I loved picking the quotes for the Lawrence/John relationship.

December:

No official December fic yet! I’ve written fic for several exchanges that will hopefully go live this month, so we’ll have to wait and see. ✌️

This was my first work in this fandom, and it was fun, and I still like it but I think that I definitely got a better hold on the characters as I went on. Re-reading a bit ago I could definitely tell I was still trying to figure out exactly how to find their voices.

Summary: “Uhm, excuse me? Excuse - “ Evan turns to find a man - a very very attractive man - in a faded army t-shirt and sunglasses shielding his eyes standing in front of him. Evan is so distracted by the man’s arms that he nearly doesn’t see that he actually does have a kid with him. “Hi, can you help me?”

“Uh - “ Evan feels stupid. Maybe his parents were right about him and he’s just really dumb. He doesn’t even remember what he’s doing here. “Uh, yes. That’s my…job? Yes, that’s what I’m here for.”

Buck/Eddie; Teen; Army Buddies AU

This is my most popular fic of the year and in the fandom. It's my second most kudo-ed fic of all time. I really love it, and it's hard to believe it was only my second 911/buddie fic. I'm so proud of it, and I'm really really glad that other people in fandom seem to love it!

Summary: “Don’t look, Buck, but I think you might have some competition.” Chim sounds way too amused for his own good.

Buck’s eyes settled onto the naked, beautiful, toned torso of a man. Buck is really good at schooling his face until his eyes slide up to the new recruit’s face and suddenly the jealousy and tension fades away.

“Diaz!?” Buck’s already walking towards the locker room when Eddie looks up. The shocked surprise on his face is evident. And, well.

Buck and Eddie met in basic training. Buck hasn't seen Eddie since the day he left the army, but he's never forgotten him.

This was the fic I wrote for my partner, @itsabeenado's birthday. It was a lot of fun to just play with Buck as a Dad. I got the idea and had to write it. I also used elements from Ted Lasso's anonymous dating app plot because that was just fun. Also Shannon is alive because I can do that if I want.

Summary: He’d deleted all of his dating apps when he adopted Camille but this feels different. Maybe if nothing else he can find some other single parents to commiserate about how hard it is. Buck knows he chose this life, but it would be nice to have someone who didn’t remind him of that every time he was sad he couldn’t go out with the team because there wasn’t another person at home to pick up parenting duties for a couple of hours. It might be nice to have friends who get how hard being a single parent is.

I'm not gonna lie this is probably an OOC mess but it was fun and silly and I'm a swiftie so I wanted to make my boys swifties and challenge myself to tell a story in this way. I love sm aus and boy I found it *so* hard to tell a story without narrative. I have so much respect for people who specialize in epistolary story telling. Also I fucking love the OCs I created for this fic. They were so much fun and I really want to write a sequel some day so I can play with them again.

Summary: bbuckley: well chim got called into work because SOMEONE – @ragingravi – got food poisoning last night so now maddie can’t come to taylor

Buck/Eddie (Buck/Tommy Break-Up); Mature; Cheating-Ish Fic.

IDK, man. Y'all know I love Tommy and Buck/Tommy. But I got real obsessed with this song and I wanted to kind of write a fic based onto it. No Tommy Bashing. Also I wrote this on a fucking airplane from San Diego to Dallas. That's all.

Summary: “Are you going to stand in the doorway or follow me to the kitchen?”

“Oh right, yeah. Kitchen.” Buck reminds himself he has a boyfriend. A boyfriend that really cares about him and is also very attractive. With a lot of muscles and can lift him off the ground in one move. Eddie is his best friend.

Buck is really, really, a lot more drunk than he initially thought.

He stands at the counter while Eddie gets him a glass of water and sits it in front of him.

“Why did you come here?” Eddie smiles, big bright brown eyes and soft smile.

“I don’t know. Just thought I hadn’t been over in a while. I wanted to see you.”

Again, I just wanted to write a fic based on Speak Now because it's a fun little song. I didn't want to break up Buck and Tommy again, though, so I used Buck and Taylor.

Summary: His job today is to stand up with Buck and be happy for him. To hand him the ring when Bobby asks him to - because of course Bobby is performing the ceremony. Eddie knows he’s not the only one who thinks this is a bad idea. He couldn’t be, right?

Buck and Taylor shouldn’t be getting married.

This was actually the first idea I ever got in this fandom, but I could never quite get what I wanted out of it. I decided to post it as a wip and this is why I don't ever write wips. IDK if anything will ever come of it, but it works decent as a little one-shot too, I guess. I hope I do manage to come back to it some day though.

Summary: “Come on. I’m on shift practically all weekend. Why don’t you and Eddie take a boys trip to Vegas? You could probably both use the distraction.”

“You wouldn’t want to fly us there, would you?”

“Can’t, sorry.” Tommy laughs to himself. “Honestly, I probably would if I didn’t have to be on call in the morning. Go on, have a road trip, eat some fast food, and do something crazy with your best friend.”

This is another one that I have a wide amount of backstory in my head for and eventually wanted to do more with. It works as a little one shot but. Sigh.

Summary: “Did you make it into the venue alright?”

Buck looks up at Eddie, much to his make up artists’ annoyance. He’s got to be on stage in twenty minutes, and he hasn’t seen his boyfriend in months. The long distance of telephones and facetime, or if it’s a really busy day for one of them, text have been the only thing holding them together since Buck had left for his long tour.

He never regretted his career choice until he met Eddie Diaz.

I really just wanted to write a Buck/Tommy fic because I hadn't yet, and this was a fun little AU idea I got and I couldn't help myself.

Summary: “Evan Buckley. I’m the photographer for the shoot.” He holds out his hand, but Tommy is distracted by his - quite honestly ridiculous blue eyes and it takes him way too long to shake his head out of it and extend his own hand.

“I’m Eddie, in case anyone was wondering.” The other guy - Mr. 118, Eddie - supplies, voice laced with humor.

“I know your name, asshole.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Eddie.” He clears his throat. “And, uh. Evan. It’s nice to meet you.”

Buck/Eddie; Teen; Tis the Damn Season AU

THIS FIC!!!! This fic nearly murdered me. At one point I thought it was going to be like 10 chapters and 100k or something and I really had to real myself in and tell the story in a soft and simple way. But I have so many different parts in my head. I know their whole backstory. I know their future. I know so many little details. I think I lived with this fic in my mind in some capacity for months and I breathed it by the time I actually wrote it. I'm proud of how it ultimately came out, though. Once again, Shannon is alive.

Summary: “I’m in El Paso.” Buck fumbles with the hem of his t-shirt, nervously. It’s so annoying that he hasn’t just let himself turn up to Eddie’s parents, asking where he can find Eddie. Helena had always loved him. She wouldn’t question his presence even a little bit. She would probably give him a big hug and invite him in for coffee. He’s just not sure he has that right or place in Eddie’s life anymore.

After all, he was the one who’d taken off.

“You’re - “ There’s a long pause on the other end of the line and then Buck hears the click of a door. “You’re here?”

“Yeah, I had to get out of LA. I was feeling a little suffocated and a lot lost. I’m at my parents’ house.”

;or Buck, Shannon, and Eddie were best friends in high school until it got messy. Buck left the day of their wedding, but now he's injured and he can't go back to work and he just needs to get out of la, so he goes back to his home town.

For the BuddieTommy Daily Holiday Exchange! A fun little fic where Buddie are established and bring Tommy in.

Summary: “Whoa, whoa.” Eddie blinks when they walk into the hangar. He hasn’t seen Tommy Kinard in years and now here he is, about to fly them into a fucking hurricane, and apparently he used to be with the 118. There’s a lot of thoughts swirling through Eddie’s mind right now. “Kinard?”

Eddie and Tommy were in the army together, and now here he is, flying them into a hurricane. Also, Eddie's boyfriend is definitely into Tommy. It's fine.

Pinch Hit for the same exchange. I just. Really love the shooting Arc, and I wanted to fuck Buck up emotionally because it's fun for me to do. BuddieTommy; Teen; Post 8x06 Confessions Fic with Tommy POV

ohhh my love. I loved this fic. I really enjoyed being in Tommy's head for once, and it was my first time really digging into his POV. When I saw Gat liked angst with a happy ending, I saw the perfect opportunity to play with the break up and see how I could get them to work it out but obviously, I love my BuddieTommy and it was for that exchange so I worked in elements of Buddie and EddieTommy throughout. This is maybe one of my favorite things I've written.

Summary: Tommy allows himself five minutes to sit in the perfect parking spot he’d found at Evan’s building. Five minutes to wonder if he’s doing the right thing. Five minutes to let himself grieve the relationship he briefly thought would be his last. Five minutes.

I’ve not done an end of year round up before, but here goes! Thank you @monbons and @iamamythologicalcreature for the tags, and @aristocratic-otter for the encouragement. Seeing everyone’s roundups has been really wholesome and enlightening. 

I often don’t give my successes much space for celebration as they tend to get drowned out by the noise of all my mental health difficulties, so this is an exercise in acknowledging the good things from 2024, as well as allowing space for the things I’ve struggled with (while trying not to sound too jaded and cynical 😅). This is a long one so everything is under the cut.

I love that some 2024 reviews share personal experiences living with health problems. It’s really validating to see that. It's so easy to forget other people struggle too, they just might not want to share that online. So before I get to the creative things I've done in 2024… watch me over share my health stuff??

Finished seeing my EMDR therapist First time in 4 years I’ve been without any kind of therapy and it’s terrifying but making me work on myself in a new way. Not sure I’m done with EMDR forever, or talking therapy, but I spent a year with a therapist I didn’t vibe with and it sort of added more issues to the pile, so I’m glad I left them.

Dumped GenderGP They replaced a load of their services (including doctors) with AI. After 2 years of treatment under them, I felt so betrayed and worthless. Thankfully I’ve still got a supply of testosterone for now.

Had a minor breakdown in July Work, house stuff, gender things and mental health all got the better of me in July. Things were incredibly bleak for a while there. Surviving is hard sometimes, but I am still here so taking that as a win.

Switched to a new NHS gender care waitlist Was 3 years into a possible 6-7 year wait for a London clinic. Now I am in year 1 of a possible 2-3 year wait for Nottingham. No idea if moving was a good call or not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 

Got on a private gender care wait list for a top surgery referral Yeah, UK trans private health care also has huge wait lists. No idea how long this one is, but I’ve been on it since August and haven’t heard anything yet

Got an ADHD diagnosis!! I am classic ADD, go figure. Had to go private for this too (who needs savings, right?) but I’m now in my 4th week of ADHD meds. It’s been A Time but it’s giving me hope (a tenuous, vulnerable thing) that maybe things won’t always be this hard.

Self Employment: Life as an illustrator in 2024

Always a mixed bag, made all the more challenging by the above health stuff, AI, and the general state of the economy, but in spite of this I have done the following:

Sold work at 6 events Norwich Queer Fest, Harrogate Airecon, UK Games Expo, Norwich Pride, Birmingham MCM, Norwich QueerFestmas. I was filled with imposter syndrome for most of these events, and I’m always very fatigued after, but I know it is good to push myself out of my comfort zone sometimes and I do enjoy meeting likeminded people and seeing people engage with my work. I had some wonderful interactions and I’m so grateful to everyone who came to say hi.

Did 2 actual IRL paintings I hadn’t painted with acrylics at all since around 2020 when I got an iPad. This year I decided to check I can still paint by hand and turns out I’m still ok at it.

Exhibited at a local gallery I also hadn’t exhibited in galleries since around 2018, so taking part in a group exhibition with my new paintings felt like a fun (and scary) opportunity this year.

Storyboarded ‘Unravelled’ graphic novella Unravelled is a horror story about knitting, written by LP Mills. Storyboarding this was a challenge since it required a level of focus I struggle to maintain, but I’m so pleased I was able to do it.  Sadly the kickstarter (that would have paid myself and Mills to fully illustrate and print it) wasn’t successful this year, but we’re holding out hope for future funding.

Illustrated ‘Football Crumpets’ play Football Crumpets is a queer audio comedy written by Lucie Isle. I made a series of character designs and spot illustrations for to advertise the Kickstarter campaign. This campaign was successful and the comedy is now in the process of being recorded by Lucie and her diverse cast of voice actors.

Experienced the worst client of my life I won’t go into detail as this broke me, I lost someone I thought was a friend, and I’ve struggled to build up confidence since. But discussing the experience with fellow creatives made me realise almost everyone has had a client from hell at one point or another. Lessons learned: Always write up a contract in advance and question anything you’re not sure about. Don’t compromise on your work boundaries for friends.

Had 3 character commissions Dramatically down from last year and I wonder how much is due to AI and no one having any money. Who knows! I love illustrating people’s OCs and Dnd characters, and the commissions I did get have been really fun. Two of them are in the banner above this section 👆

Snowbaz & Fandom Adventures

This is only the second year I’ve engaged with the lovely Snowbaz community and I am so glad I pushed myself to do it. I’ve made some wonderful friends and I’m sharing my writing publicly for the first time in years. I’ve not done much compared to most, but I’m trying to pace myself so I don’t burn out and stop enjoying it. I’m hoping to be healthier this year thanks to new meds, so with any luck I’ll be able to do a bit more than in 2024.

Snow On Ice (writer) (M, 3.8K words, chapter 1/12ish) For CORB 24 with concept and artwork by @iamamythologicalcreature is one of the first two fics I’ve ever shared on Ao3 and I’m loving every second of writing this!!

Boundless (writer) (T, 4.5K words, chapter 1/5) Also for CORB 24, this time with @cattocavo This one has taken a bit of a back seat as I’ve discovered the hard way that I can’t write two large fics at once (curse my limitations!!!) but I’m looking forward to getting back to this when I can, especially since Catto has already produced so much incredible artwork for it and it needs to be shared!!!

On Every Wall (artist) (E, 24K, chapters 2/2)written by @orange-peony for CORB 24. I love drawing these boys so much, dammit. It was so good working with Peony and seeing her story unfold based off my indulgent artwork (an edit of which is in the above banner). I wanted to draw so much more for this fic, but health and work got in the way.

Fics that have brought me comfort and joy:

I get through a lot of Ao3 fics, but wanted to give a shout out to the fics that have stayed with me long after reading them. I cannot get over the healing power of writing and how incredible it is that so many of us can find common ground in this way. 

Someone Wicked The first is @artsyunderstudy’s Someone Wicked (Snowbaz, E, Chapters). It wrecked me and then built me back up again in the best way possible. Seeing their artwork is always an inspiration too, and I have listened to their Something Wicked Playlist about a billion times. Like any well adjusted normal person, right??

Blame it on My Youth (Andreil AFTG, E, 1.5M words, Chapters 136/?) I still owe @yourficstheyglow a lengthy Ao3 comment on how much this fic has changed my life. It’s held my hand and encouraged me to look after myself better over the past 6 months in a way therapy never has. I vibed with their depiction of Neil SO HARD. His reluctance to engage with mediation and journalling is so relatable. Along with his frustration at people forever suggesting it to him, and then his irritation that it actually helps a bit. 😂 Reading about Neil shopping around for therapists, working on his communication and downloading self care apps (even though he hates it all every step of the way) has resulted in me printing out charts to help identify my emotions, making a spreadsheet of potential therapists to approach when I’m ready, journaling for the first time in yeeeears and getting a handle on my mental health in a way I never really have before. I even downloaded the stupid Finch app (after years of people suggesting it to me) because Neil did (I named by bird Neil). When I’ve felt lonely and sad, I’ve found reassurance and safety in Neil and Andrew being soft with each other, exploring their boundaries as Andrew works through his trauma from SA, stepping outside of their comfort zones, trusting each other and respecting each other’s limitations. 

Of Cats and Closed Doors (Fitzloved Rote, E, 785K words, Chapters 77/?) I’ve been dipping in and out of this fic by @tragediegh for a good 18 months now, if not longer. I am full of love for the Farseer Trilogy books and ate them up a few years ago. The Liveship Traders came next but then I got too in my head to ready the Tawny Man trilogy, since Fitz and the Fool are so dear to me I didn’t know how to handle them going through more trauma. I just want them to hug and kiss and be loved so badly!! Ellipsis provided a monumental dose of comfort and healing in this fic. It’s become my personal canon. Last year, thanks to this fic, I finally had the courage to start reading The Tawny Man trilogy. I’m on to book 2 now and although I am terrified, I know I can come back to Of Cats and Closed Doors to remind myself in Ellipsis’ universe everything turns out ok!

Upcoming Projects for 2025

Lola and I have something that we want to get going in 2025, but the reality is that I've struggled with writing this year and I've got a lot going on in the first part 2025 that will require my creativity so other than my project with Lola, I'm really not sure what I'll be writing. There are a couple of things I'd like to write, but we'll see.

As for the fics I've posted in 2024:

In 2023, I posted 15 fics which weren't just updates to my drabble collections. I'm pretty sure this was a reduction in what I'd posted in 2021/2022. This year, I've continued that downward trend and posted 7 fics, 4 ficlets (less than 1k words), and a smattering of drabbles (ie. strictly 100 words) here on tumblr, some of which have been cross-posted to ao3.

The thing about sex with Henry is, it’s never the same twice. Sometimes he moves easily, caught up in the rush, and other times he’s tense and taut and wants Alex to work him loose and take him apart. Sometimes nothing gets him off faster than being talked back to, but other times they both want him to use every inch of authority in his blood, not to let Alex get there until he’s told, until he begs. It’s unpredictable and it’s intoxicating and it’s fun, because Alex has never met a challenge he didn’t love, and he— well, Henry is a challenge, head to toe, beginning to end.

I have so many WIPs that I'm playing with! My Camping AU: Wildness & Artifice is very summer themed and the ending needs fleshing out so I think I'll keep that one for the Spring.

BUT! I have at least two more winter themed fics that will be coming out in the next month or so! There's also Gilmore Girls AU and Sugar Daddy Pez in the works!

I love RWRB and the whole MCQ universe. This fandom their books have relit a love of fiction (I read a lot of non-fiction history) in me that I thought was gone. This fandom and their words got me through a tough pregnancy and kept me sane during my first months as a new mom.

The words of the authors of this amazing fandom have made me weep, rage and laugh out loud. Thank you for your words and inspiring me to keep writing mine.

2024 Fic Writing Roundup

This is so fun!! Thanks for the tags, @cha-melodius @firenati0n, @onthewaytosomewhere, and the open tag @caterpills.

Getting to this late because I wanted to wait until my final fic of the year went live. I posted fics every month except January, which I'm super proud of. I've posted 27 fics (86 if you count ficlets and drabbles separately) with a total word count of 218,348, which is INSANE to me!! Especially knowing how many unfinished WIPs curently live on my Drive (around 80k worth) 🫣 AND the fact that before joining this fandom, I hadn't written much in many, many years.

2024 Fic Year in Review.

@cassiesinsanity and @inkvoices did a fic year in review and I wanted to know the numbers of mine. I had done it for most other things like books and games etc. thanks for the idea guys.

Thanks @broken--bow <3 for helping me compile some of the fic and numbers, it was way more than I thought.

We did some ask games in Feb and April totaling around 4K, and a little over 20 of them across the months.

Black Widow Fest was a big one this year, and for once (proudly) I got the main fics up on ao3. There were also some short fics in there around 1.3k

The Truth the Dead Know - 3.6k (one of my fav fics of the year I think)

the letter be - 2.9K

Here Again Now - 19.6k

I loved @be-compromised promptathon - especially the parallel fic with @cassiesinsanity, that was so fun to see the different takes - this was a joy. Promptathon totaled around 3.2k… I still need to put them onto ao3. Maybe a goal for the year.

I worked on the Nat goes missing fic, which is a baby of mine which went from 53k- 65k and let’s face it, still has so much to go. It’s the go to fic when I want to just write pure angst and healing. She’s a beast.

Salt Roses (9k) was a stand alone fic, which was taken from all the prompts of April and weaved into one fic. It was such a challenge, to take such different ideas and sort them into one story but I quite enjoyed the challenge.

Ignite your bones was this years whumptober, and what a fun fic it was. I’ve always wanted to delve into Natasha’s early shield days, and chose the really early days, I don’t think I quite captured all the angst and whump of it, and potentially felt that it could have been darker(?) idk, but I did so love writing it. It was a behemoth at just over 53k.

Lastly was advent, which I forgot about really, so glad that we got 12 out, with the ask game and short fics which was about 3.7k.

So all up maybe around 111k words, but really, I don’t think it’s the words. I think my hopes for this year would to be some prompts on @be-compromised where possible, continue to build some connections with friends through fic, and write what I want to.

Anyway. Thanks for following along. Fic is always community, and I am lucky that be-compromised is here, and everyone that follows the fics. It means more than you all know. <3

The Golden Dragons - My first ever fanfic, my baby! I had no idea what I was doing, I just started writing one day and this modern college AU has evolved. It's fun and I don't take this one too seriously, its a bit of satire and a lot of silly with a touch of serious.

My Adversary, My Abyss - An in-canon Mira/Syrena fic I began back in September as part of the Fourth Wing femslash week organized by @oh-no-its-dragons

One Manhattan - Modern Riorgail AU set in New York City. Co-authoring with @tegantales

Two Manhattans - Companion Piece to One Manhattan, sharing supporting character POV's.

XOXO, Aaric Graycastle - Basgiath's Gossip Column. A fun and silly series of tabloid style articles for Basgiath shenannigans.

Samara Man - Like Florida Man ... but at Samara. Spoiler: it always comes back to Garrick Tavis.

What was your favorite thing you wrote?

This is a really tough one. I love Golden Dragons b/c it is where my journey writing fanfic began ... but I wouldn't necessarily say it's my favorite thing I've written. Honestly, probably Chapter 6 of That Infamous Infantry Guy, it was my first time experimenting with writing something dark, and I love how it turned out.

What piece was your most experimental or different from your usual style?

Probably The Music of The Night. It was my first time writing something that was really inspired by music and incorporating it's lyrics into the prose. It ended up being far more poetic than my usual works and is very dark and twisted. But I loved how it turned out so much.

Did any fics surprise you - either while writing or their reception?

I was definitely surprised how much I loved writing Music of the Night, I wasn't sure how this Violet/Varrish pairing was going to come together, but once the idea came to me, the words just poured out of me.

I think the fandom's reaction to One Manhattan surprised me the most. I mean, I knew it would be fun and a wild ride, but I didn't expect so many people to take the ride with us and that has been awesome!

Do you have a fic you wrote and loved that went under the radar? (This is your sign to reblog/repost it!)

Definitely My Adversary, My Abyss. Though the response to it has been small, it's been SO positive. The comments and messages I've gotten about it have been some of the most supportive and appreciative I've ever received. There's a lot of M/M fic in the fandom, but there really isn't much in the way of F/F so i am very determined and motivated to finish this one!

Who is an artist that inspired you?

Both @oh-no-its-dragons and @ann7av have created fan art based off of my works and if that isn't inspiration to keep writing, I don't know what is!! The fact that I wrote something that inspired artists to create absolutely blows my mind in the BEST possible way. It's the most wonderful thing, isn't it, to continue inspiring one another with our creations?

A shout out also to @lunatrixart for her amazing Tairn & Sgaeyl piece she created for the Rider's Quadrant Winter Solstice exchange. I started following her after I was assigned her as my giftee - I love how the exchange introduced me to so many creative and inspiring authors and artists!

Who is an author that inspired you?

I have met some really incredible authors this year in the Fourth Wing fanfic fandom through AO3 and the RQ Discord Server. Though, I have to call out @ubiquitouslyme because her Xaden Year 3 is the first fanfic I ever read. It was what I discovered when looking for a cure for my FW/IF book hangover, and it led me here! And for that, I will be forever grateful.

Additional shout out to Lydi (who's tumblr name is escaping me) for bringing me into the RQ Discord Server and introducing me to the fandom in a deeper way!

There are just too many authors to count because everyone inspires me in one way or another! I appreciate every comment, every encouraging word, every kudo, every meme, and just all our general discussions. Thank you to this fandom for welcoming me with open arms, it's been such a wonderful journey!

Who is a new author you discovered?

Well, I am so new to this fandom that literally everyone is a new author to me! So can I just say, all the authors of the Empyrean Fandom? There's just so much talent here it's unreal. This is such a tough one because there are so many on the RQ server.

Did you do any collaborations? How did it start?

I did!

I've been writing One Manhattan and Two Manhattans with @tegantaless. I am not actually sure how it started, I think one of us was like, "Hey, I like your writing, we should write something together" and the other responded "Yes, same. I'm in!" and then we just did. It clicked for us immediately, and it's been so easy to co-author together. It kind of snowballed from there - we've now met IRL and have probably 100K words and three different published works between us in just a couple months?

What accomplishments are you proudest of?

I have three things I'm most proud of this year:

I started writing. Period. Hard Stop. I've never written anything creatively before and just decided to try it and see what happens. To say I've surprised myself is an understatement.

As someone who had never read smut or fantasy before 2023, I have now written both. To say it was intimidating when I started would be an understatement, but I'm so glad I went for it!

I pushed myself beyond what I was initially comfortable with. I've now written smut, m/m, f/f, poly, fluff, angst, and some super dark stuff. It's hard for me to believe I started writing fanfic for the first time in May!

What did you learn about writing or creating this year?

That nothing is perfect. That every chapter doesn't have to top the last. That sometimes you just need to build out the story. That it's okay to walk away from something if you need a break or aren't feeling inspired, your writing will be better for it.

What is your advice?

Write what makes YOU happy! Write for yourself, not everyone else. 

Connect with your readers! One of the things that brings me the most joy as a writer is interacting with those who follow my work. I love it so much, that my first fic, The Golden Dragons, turned into an interactive fic where I have surveys and linkouts embedded and then draw from those responses to make it more interactive.

Support each other! I am a very slow reader, but I try to read as much as I can because I enjoy both the stories and supporting the other wonderful authors in this fandom!

What are your creative goals for 2025?

Finish my current Empyrean WIPs, flesh out Mile High Club into a multi-chapter AU fic, complete one original fiction.

Write at least one piece for another fandom. I'm coming for you @acourtofladydeath
