MCU Timeline: The Incredible Hulk

This timeline is based on dates from the movie, its deleted scenes, calculations and logic, and not on Fury's Big Week (see the reason here). I must admit that compared to the other movies I've covered, this one gave me a bit of a headache.

~1946 - Thaddeus E. Ross is born.

December 18, 1969 - Robert Bruce Banner is born.

~1970 - Emil Blonsky is born.

~1973 - Ross returns from Vietnam at the age of 27.

March 5, 2004, 2:30 pm - experiment by Dr. Banner and Dr. Betty Ross turns Bruce into the Hulk. He kills two scientists, a military officer, and injures General Ross and his daughter.

In the newspaper we can see part of the date "06". The most logical option would be "2006", but this contradicts other dates, plus Marvel often blurs or skips years in their newspapers. The next option is - day. We can't see the month, but there is another paper connected to it that says "March 07". So I assume the original incident happened on March 5 (the day before this newspaper was published).

~March 6 or 7, 2004 at 2:50 pm - Bruce visits Betty in the hospital. General Ross confronts him. Bruce runs away. Ross begins his hunting campaign.

April 18, 2004 - Banner is spotted by a surveillance camera.

This is a US surveillance camera (date format), meaning it happened while Bruce was hiding inside the country (thus shortly after the original incident).

2004-2006 - Banner spotted in Idaho. Hulk kills a state trooper.

Here I would guess that the suicide attempt in Alaska from the deleted alternate opening scene took place in the winter of 2004-2005 or 2005-2006. And it wasn't the suicide attempt Banner was talking about in The Avengers, because he didn't put a bullet in his mouth in the deleted scene. Instead, he aimed at the ice so it would break and drag him out to the sea, I guess. So officially he's attempted suicide at least twice, and the bullet-in-mouth was before that ice-cold-one (it doesn't make sense to put so much effort into attempting suicide if you haven't tried all the easier options. And I'm sure he tried them).

February 7, 2006 - Banner attempted contact with Betty Ross.

May 27-28, 2006 - Bruce/Hulk spotted in Canada. Hulk (possibly) kills two Canadian hunters.

September 4, 2006 - Hulk out with house demolition. Probably still in Canada.

Not sure why "Notification: MOSSAD": this doesn’t look like Israel at all. But perhaps after this incident Bruce flew from Canada to Israel, and then from there went to Europe.

October 21, 2006 - "last seen fleeing".

This "No Sightings For 5 Months" contradicts October 21, 2006, because there were events a month before and after that date. And that's okay, because it doesn't actually mean that that line has to have any connection to that specific date. It just means that Ross lost him for 5 months during his hunt, and it's just part of a larger report, most of which we don't see.

November-December 2006 (snow) - Hulk smashes trucks in Europe (European license plate).

January 22, 2007 - Hulk out in Samara, Russia.

2007-2008 - Bruce in a Tibetan monastery.

March 2009 - Bruce is hired to work at the Antonio Carlos soda bottling plant in Rio (Rocinha favela), Brazil.

So his path most likely looked like this: US (Virginia > Idaho) > crossed US/Canada border > Alaska > back to Canada > Israel > Central Europe > Russia > China (Tibet) > Japan > South America (Paraguay > Brazil).

5 years after initial incident (2004-2009):

~August 2, 2009, 158 days after the last incident:

Banner cuts his finger at the plant and a bottle of soda containing his blood is shipped to the US.

Here on the sticker we see "19 APR". At this quality I can't really see what that date means, but I'm guessing it's a bottling or shipping date. So in the movie it must be April 19th, right? But if we use that date, other dates won't work (especially the last scenes in Canada). Instead, I'll use secondary evidence like the weather and college students later in the movie (doesn't look like summer, does it?) to determine an approximate date, and ignore "19 APR".

Note: This weather forecast matches August 2009 in Rio, but not April.

He tries the mysterious flower on his blood cells, but it's just another failed attempt to cure himself of the Hulk. He sends a sample of his blood to Dr. Samuel Sterns.

~30 days later - Stan Lee in Wisconsin drinks the bottle with Banner's blood.

Shortly after, ~September 2, 8:10 pm - General Ross learns of this and sends his men to search for Banner.

~September 3 (190 days without incident):

Ross has assembled a special forces team to capture Bruce, led by Emil Blonsky. They are sent to Brazil immediately.

Same day in Brazil - Sterns informs Bruce that he has succeeded in reducing the gamma radiation levels in Banner's blood sample.

~September 4, early morning - Ross' team tries to catch Bruce. He hulks out and escapes.

~September 8:

Morning - Bruce returns to himself in Guatemala, thousands of miles from Rio.

Why ~4 days later and not 1: Hulk's running speed in the MCU is about 100 km/h. The distance between Rio and Guatemala that he had to run is ~7 thousand km. I doubt he ran at the same speed the whole distance, so that gives us at least 3-4 days.

(Probably) same day, evening - Bruce in Chiapas, Mexico.

~September 24:

10:40 am - Bruce arrives at Culver University but can't get inside.

Note: there are too many students for summer, and some are wearing sweaters and jackets. All this tells us that it is most likely September.

Night - he visits his old friend Stan.

~September 25 (Friday):

Bruce gains access to the university database, but finds that all of his data has disappeared.

Bruce and Betty meet. She hides him at her house (or rather at her boyfriend's house, according to deleted scenes) and gives him the data she saved.

Betty mentions that it's Friday, and in this movie the days of the week match our universe, unlike Iron Man 1 where they don't. I'll make another post explaining why there's such a difference between the movies, rather than just calling it a mistake.

Blonsky gets an injection of super soldier serum.

~September 26 - General Ross attacks Bruce at Culver University. Bruce hulks out, badly injures Blonsky, saves Betty and runs away with her. They spend the night in a cave.

Note that some trees in the scene are already changing colors to yellow and red, which usually starts in mid-September.

~September 27 - Hulk in. Betty takes Bruce to a motel. Blonsky is healed of all his injuries.

~September 28:

Bruce sends the data to Sterns. He and Betty drive to NYC. Blonsky gets a second injection.

Here we can see "06.12.08", but: 1) it contradicts other dates; 2) the time +0004 does not match the time Bruce sent the message (it was daytime, not 00:04); 3) there is another message with "06.00.08". I conclude that this is not even a date, or not a date we can trust.

Night - Sterns uses his antidote on Banner, which temporarily suppresses the Hulk.

General Ross tranquilizes Bruce and takes him into custody. Blonsky forces Sterns to inject him with Banner's blood, and Blonsky becomes the Abomination. He hits Sterns, and a drop of Banner's blood falls into Sterns' head wound.

The Abomination attacks Harlem. Bruce hulks out and fights him. He defeats Blonsky and runs away.

~October 29 (31 days later) - Bruce in Bella Coola, BC, Canada. He learns to control the Hulk and hulks out on purpose in his cabin.

This is not earlier than October. Closer to November. Not summer at all. The warm clothes people are wearing in the last scenes also confirm this.

Note: the "more than a year without an incident" from The Avengers doesn't really tell us anything about the year of this movie, because Bruce could have had an incident at any time after that. Or a whole bunch of incidents.

Note: comic book The Incredible Hulk: The Big Picture is not compatible with the movie, despite being released in the same box in 2008. Why we can say this: 1) the date of the first incident in the book is April 16, 2005. The movie contains evidence of Ross's hunt from April 2004. 2) The scenes of Bruce and Ross's first confrontation are different. In the movie, it takes place in the hospital; in the book, it takes place in the destroyed lab, where shirtless Banner stayed for three days. 3) In the book Blonsky had already encountered Hulk before the chase in Rio. He didn't see him, but he interrogated a boy who did. In the movie, Blonsky had never heard of the Hulk before.

Another week down, another issue of Case Notes!

We've got a variety of stuff this week, from references to a brief history lesson, so let's get right to it.

1) Of The Times

Conan's deduction in the shinkansen case hinges on the existence of smoking and non-smoking cars... which means the case would have to undergo a serious rewrite if it was written today. Check out a brief overview of the Tokaido Shinkansen's history with smoking on its trains below!

1964: Shinkansen begins service. Smoking is possible in all cars, with ashtrays installed by seats.

1976: One (1) non-smoking car introduced.

1986: Expanded to four cars.

1990s: Increased to over half of all cars.

2007: Seats are non-smoking, with designated “Smoking Rooms” in certain areas.

2024: Smoking Rooms abolished; fully non-smoking.

2) Names!

We've added a few more people to our core roster, so let's take a quick look at them!

Sonoko Suzuki (鈴木園子): The meaning of Sonoko’s name is nothing to write home about (for now, anyway). Last name: Bell Tree; First name: Garden Child. What IS crazy is that she’s apparently named after a kouhai of Gosho’s in high school.

Gin & Vodka: We finally have these bozos’ names! Both Gin and Vodka are distilled liqueurs. They have little meaning other than Gosho thought liquer-based names were cool. For some extra fun facts: they were designed in about 30 seconds between them, Gosho writes/rewrites almost 100% of Gin’s movie dialogue, and Vodka was designed to be a sort of “pseudo-Watson” to help highlight everyone else in comparison because we can’t have EVERYONE in this organization be competent.

3) Japanese Culture

This week we have one major topic: multiplication tables!

When Conan overhears Gin and Vodka's plan to blow the train to smithereens, he begins to repeat the phrase 木端微塵 (koppa mijin, smithereens) in shock. He manages to stop himself halfway through... and then very badly (and wrongly, like a six year old would I suppose) begins to recite his multiplication tables.

The Japanese multiplication table is referred to as the 九九 (kuku, nine-nine). The supposed story behind this is that the method was brought over from China, which originally started with the highest number on the table. What makes the table a little different than, say, the English multiplication table is that it's meant to be a bare-bones and rhythmic way for children to memorize it. As a result, many of the phrases utilize common alternatives (or slightly odd) pronunciations to make it nice and easy.

Bear with me on the extended Japanese, but to use the example Conan and Kogoro spoke of (8x8=64)

First, the standard Japanese:

Presented in image format for easy reading.

The kuku version of this? Happa rokujuushi. "Ha" from hachi, and a Japanese grammar rule where H- sounds can change to B- or P- sounds is utilized to make it fun and easy to say. It's got the same vibes as saying "eigh-teight sixty four."

If you're familiar with Japanese numbers, he's a nifty chart from Wikipedia for the remainder of the kuku!

4) Short & Sweet References

Except it's not very short at all, since there are a number of references in MULTIPLE categories this week.

BRANDS

All of the brands featured in the background while the kids go about their treasure hunt are spelled juuuust a little wrong.

Denny's. An American family restaurant chain that has a fairly significant presence in Japan due to a business deal with Seven & i Holdings.

Budweiser. Beer.

PARCO. A Japanese chain of department stores.

BIC Camera. A Japanese electronics retailer.

LANDMARKS

This chapter features the DetCo equivalent of Tokyo Tower for the first time. As for the name "Touto Tower," it just replaces the second kanji of Tokyo with the “metropolis” kanji in Tokyo’s full name, Tokyo-to (東京都).

The bus the kids take is also based on the very real Toei Bus Line, To06 (都06, written with the same kanji as mentioned above). The actual line doesn't have a "Before Tokyo Tower" stop, but it DOES have two or three stops that are easily within walking distance of the tower, so they could have easily taken it irl.

YAIBA & Other Manga

After a certain event in YAIBA, a number of brands get changed to be more Oni-esque. One of these, as you can see below the TV, is ONY... which is a play on Sony. There's also an ad on a building for an alcoholic beverage of some kind called 鬼桜 (onizakura?). I couldn't find a specific reference for this one, so it's possible this also falls into the same idea of Oni-fied products.

Jubei likely comes from Jubei Yagyu, who also has a presence in YAIBA.

KAMEN YAIBA!! We have our first appearance of their favorite tokusatsu hero. Kamen Yaiba is clearly modeled after the Kamen Rider tokusatsu franchise, which began in the early 1970s. What it's also technically a reference to is a stunt that Yaiba pulls in one of his fights where he... wears Sayaka's swimsuit as a mask and claims himself to be Kamen Yaiba. The DetCo version of this character is obviously a much more straightforward take on a tokusatsu hero.

While Conan is busy looking for clues, the kids are looking at a bunch of Shogakukan-published magazines! From left to right we have...

Ciao: A shojo magazine. The character in the front is a little hard to make out, unfortunately.

Shounen Sunday. DetCo's own magazine is back, but this time we have Ranma Saotome featured on the cover. Ranma 1/2 ran in Sunday from 1987-1996, so it was another of DetCo's contemporaries.

Big Comic Spirits. A seinen magazine. The cover seems to feature one of its fruit-head mascot characters.

5) Detective Trivia

A rapid-fire list of references after Conan solves the code to win the Kamen Yaiba doll.

Detective Boys & Kobayashi: Kobayashi is the leader of Edogawa Ranpo’s Detective Boys.

Kogoro Akechi: The main detective character for Ranpo. The Detective Boys aid Kogoro Akechi.

Holmes: That sure goes without saying.

Hercule Poirot: Agatha Christie’s detective.

6) Redrawn

Another Volume 1 redraw when Conan flashes back to the day that changed his life after running into Gin and Vodka on the train. The entire scene is presented quite differently to account for space, so the only panel that is particularly close to the original scene is the segment where Gin is feeding Shinichi the poison.

7) Adapted Out, Adapted In

As mentioned in Week 2, TMS had a habit in the early Detective Conan anime of stripping the organization elements from some of their early adaptations. In Akemi's case, it had some interesting consequences (which I have not forgotten about, don't you worry), but it's not the only case that happened to.

The anime version of the shinkansen bombing case is only episode five of the anime, and it made two fundamental changes. The first is the introduction of Genta, Ayumi, and Mitsuhiko to the episode. Though this changes the general tone a bit, that's not as important as the second change: Gin and Vodka are replaced by doppelgangers. That means Conan, in the anime, never finds out their names in this case... and never organically finds out their names at all, if memory serves. He simply knows them, eventually.

It's another example of how the early anime adaptation was a bit of a Wild West in terms of adaptation standards with regards to canon.

8) Food For Thought

A shorter one, but one that stuck out to me.

Last week, we had a case that lightly touched on the idea of there being no such thing as a just killing. This week, at the end of the bandaged man case, Takahashi insists that everything he did, he did for Atsuko... and that he would now join her as an envoy of justice, now that he's gotten his revenge.

Conan immediately calls him out on this, which is in line with the museum case last week, but what sticks out to me more than anything is the way in which he does so: "if you want to die, then go ahead and do it!"

It ultimately works, since it shocks Takahashi out of his suicide attempt. But it's a flippant sentiment that seems to run contrary to the idea that no one deserves to die. Perhaps it’s motivated by Ran’s involvement in the case; she’s one of the most important people to him, after all, and she has nothing to do with Takahashi’s revenge.

“Revenge” as a particularly demonic motive is interesting to think about both with regards to Conan’s actions here (is his flippancy also, technically, revenge for Takahashi going after Ran?) and Conan’s actions in general (largely with regards to getting “revenge” on the organization that poisoned him). It's worth keeping in mind, mostly to see whether these sentiments from Conan remain or not.

Wait. No signs of life left in the penthouse whatsoever? Rashid writes back, disbelieving, and then stumbles out of bed in search of his clothing.

I do not know what has become of our former employers or the journalist, Hassan writes. The same thing that will become of you, perhaps.

I don't think I have told this whole story before.

stuff about my house, an old abusive relationship, early witchling behavior, and growth...

So, my ex-husband and I bought this house in January of 2001. As soon as I walked into the house I knew it was *my* house, this was way before I started studying witchcraft.

The relationship was emotionally abusive from the beginning but I had no skills or understanding of how to deal with conflict and thought if I just did what he asked it would be alright, but it was never enough. I was always fucking up by doing something I wanted to do that my ex did not want me to do. He's say things like "you are so smart that you can talk yourself into anything and that's why you keep getting confused. So if you just do what I want you won't have problems." or something like that. Like, that just gives you a base level of how twisted my brain was. (there's a digital version of the zine I wrote about it here)

The house had strange spots in it that felt weird and our incongruity seemed to feed it. One of our housemates reported chairs sliding across the floor and things going missing. At one point I moved out then moved back in while we were trying to go to counseling and work things through. We thought a change would be good and we moved into that room the housemate had issues with, stayed 3 nights and revealed to each other that we felt weird and could not sleep, so we moved to a different room.

Counseling didn't work and I eventually found to courage to leave the winter of 05-06, but we still owned a business together and a lot of my things were still in the house. The person he dated after me (we became friends after she experiences some of the same abuse) saw visions of me in the house and I was very angry.

In 2005, before I left and i was sleeping on a mat on the floor of the basement, I started studying witchcraft. Got myself some Cunningham books and felt really silly trying to do rituals and hiding it. In the divorce I lost the business but got the house with idea that I would sell it. I cleaned the whole thing, painted everything, put in new fixtures. Took a punk house and made it into something more friendly. By the time I was done it was the spring of 2007. The house went on the market just as the markets were crashing. Someone was on the hook to buy it and kept it off the market for the full 30 days and by that time the house had lost a lot of value.

Anyway! We decided to move into it it with some friends in October 0f 2007. One of the friends was Wiccan and I was sort of interested in it and went to a few open rituals with her. She was taking a year and a day class and asked her teachers to help cleanse the house before we moved in. I had already stashed a bunch of witchy stuff i bought in the closet that would be my room. We opened all the windows, doors, drawers, and what not. We started at our fireplace and lit incense, flicked consecrated salt water with springs of rosemary and sage from the garden, and chanted. One of the teachers gestured towards the closet I had my newly acquired witchy shit in and asked what was in there. I said nothing and that room wasn't the problem, the room next to it where the chairs had moved was, so the focused on that. I'm still not sure why I didn't explain.

Anyway, at that point our house became the Spiral House and we have not had any of the old garbage that I'm sure was being fed by a shitting relationship. After that I built my own magical system and my own wards that work with the land and the house. I've made a secure home and I do love my house and my neighborhood.

Both houses next to us have been broken in to, but ours has not. I still think it is funny when some people stop at the threshold and I have to invite them in like vampires. lol.

23-Jun (10325, Writer Sarah Hooper, Director Eamonn Norris): Cain is furious when he finds out he has been kept int he dark. Belle tries to persuade Tracy to change her mind. Robert feels guilty.

24-Jun (10326, Writer Samantha DeVaux, Director Eamonn Norris): Robert is in a dangerous position. Belle persuades Vanessa to help. Joe makes a discovery.

25-Jun (10327, Writer Lesley Clare O’Neill, Director Eamonn Norris): Robert is terrified. Joe is suspicious. Jacob makes a serious offer.

26-Jun (10328/10329, Writer Ben Tagoe, Director Michael Lacey) 1 hour: Sarah is grateful for Charity’s support. Paddy shares his worries over Bear’s behavior. Joe makes an order.

1) Vic confronts Jack about his arrest for Sarah’s killing after search library archives. Kelly deals with Matthew’s cutting remarks after moving into Home Farm with Jimmy. 2) Hari ‘borrows’ money from the vet to pay for racehorse after Gray pulls out. Kelly and Jimmy babysit the twins in their own ways. Andy regrets telling Jo the truth about Sarah’s death who is told to stay quiet by Diane.

1:25 PM 24-Jun: 03-Apr-2007 (4640), 04-Apr-2007 (4641)

1) After a misunderstanding and dropping the engagement ring in the river, Jimmy and Kelly become engaged. Bob and Viv go crazy selecting godparents for the twins. Hari fires Jo when she starts looking for the missing money. Hari comes clean to Gray. 2) It’s a mixed response to Jimmy and Kelly’s engagement. Jo admits to knowing about the fire to Katie who’s been taunting her about struggling to look after Sarah. Kelly confides in Donna about not wanting kids.

1:40 PM 25-Jun: 05-Apr-2007 (4642), 06-Apr-2007 (4643)

1) Perdy miscarries after falling off a horse but needs surgery for a hysterectomy because it was an ectopic pregnancy. Kelly’s engagement party is a bust. Hari’s confidence in the racehorse Boomer has him entered in a race again Jonny’s advice. 2) Perdy asks Gray to stay quiet about the hysterectomy to Rosemary. Betty’s dog Charlie passes and she wants his ashes scattered next to his former master Seth.

1:25 PM 26-Jun: 08-Apr-2007 (4644), 09-Apr-2007 (4645)

1) Perdy is negative about her marriage lasting and Paul persuades Gray to recommit to her. Jasmine uses Alan and Louise’s clashes over the pageant in a new article. Viv is embarrassed as Bob demands she return the expensive outfits for the twins. 2) Escaped cows destroy pageant floats. Carries discovers Scarlett’s receiving bullying text messages. Rosemary learns of the hysterectomy. Len moves up his wedding plans from May from Christmas.

1:40 PM 27-Jun: 10-Apr-2007 (4646), 11-Apr-2007 (4647)

1) Mill Brook Cottage is the center of Matthew and Jimmy’s latest battle. Rosemary tries to persuade Gray to leave Perdy but he won’t have it! Rosemary sets Rodney in his place in his new role. Jasmine’s article worsens Alan’s mood. South America for David and Del? 2) Carrie and Scarlett make plans for their new cottage. Carl has a ons with Carrie which she trivializes. Len is overburdened at the garage thanks to Debbie’s focus on the taxi firm.

doctor who nuwho masterlist

ive been meaning to post this on tumblr for a while and keep forgetting but a few years ago i made a nuwho / whoniverse watchlist including the spinoff shows in release order and now seems like the time to share it! i know ive seen theres a lot of new fans watching from 2005 on (from what im seeing mostly gomens fans. hi gomens fans) and a lot of ppl coming back to the show or rewatching in lieu of the new eps with david and catherine! so heres the list!

Alright I'm tired of it being locked up in a notepad, here's the chronological release dates of all things Destiny that I know of. I'll add to it if someone knows more.

Dates are YYYY/MM/DD. Blue is Destiny 1, pink is Destiny 2, pretty much just prefix everything with the normal full title of either game. I'm trying to keep it easy to read. Kasukabe's artbook is on here because it has extra comics. The anthologies are non-canon but officially licensed and all by multiple artists (far too many to list) as far as I know. I am not dedicated enough to find the localization dates of everything, just know that various things have received localizations in languages other than English, sometimes several years after their initial publication.

ALL of La Fayette’s Grandchildren

(This post discusses the death and loss of children)

While four children are still pretty easy to keep track of, La Fayette’s abundance of grandchildren can be quite confusing. You often see the following graphic, published in Jules Germain Cloquet’s book:

All fine and dandy, but I was looking for more detailed information and I wanted to include the children that had already died by the time Cloquet publishes his book – I therefor made a graphic of my own. :-)

I am tempted to make one for the great-grandchildren as well, since La Fayette was very exited to become a Great-Grandfather – but this one was already a wild ride and La Fayette had more great-grandchildren then grand-children, let me tell you.

Anyway, some names are written in italics, these are the names the individuals commonly went by. I find it funny to see that all of Virginie’s children went by their second name, just like Virginie herself mostly just used her second name. Anastasie’s second child has an Asterix to her name. I have only once seen the name spelled out, on the certificate of baptism. The twins were baptized in Vianen (modern day Netherlands) and the name on the document was the Germanic spelling “Maria Victorina” – I used what I assumed is the best French spelling of the name.

The dates in bold indicate that the corresponding documentation of the birth/marriage/death can be found in the archives.

Anastasie and Charles: Finding Célestine’s dead twin sister was actually a surprise for me since I have never before seen her being mentioned. Anastasie gave birth for the first time in a town near Utrecht in what today are the Netherlands. The achieves there still have the certificate of baptism (on February 30, was the clerk sloppy or did the region in 1799 adhere to a different calendar style where February could have more then 29 days?) and we can very clearly see that there were too children. By May 9, 1799, La Fayette wrote to George Washington and referred to only one grand-child:

My wife, my daughters, and Son in law, join in presenting their affectionate respects to Mrs Washington & to you my dear g[ener]al the former is recovered & sets out for france on monday next with Virginia—our little grand Daughter [Célestine] is well, will your charming one accept our tender regard?

I suspect that Anastasie had a stillbirth around August/September of 1801. La Fayette mentioned in a letter to Thomas Jefferson on June 21, 1801:

Anastasia Will Before long Make me Once More a Grand Father

There is no mention of this child being born and both the achieves in Paris and Courpalay yield no information so that it is unlikely that the child was born and then died young. Georges’ daughter died very young and she still is in the archives. Given La Fayette’s wording we can assume that Anastasie’s pregnancy was already somewhat advanced and the term miscarriage is only used up until the 20th week of a pregnancy, after that it is considered a stillbirth.

Georges and Emilie: The couple lost at least one daughter, Léontine Emilie, young, aged just four weeks. La Fayette wrote in a letter to Thomas Jefferson on February 20, 1807:

My family are pretty well and beg to be most affectionately respectfully and gratefully presented to you—We expected a Boy to be called after your name—But little Tommy has again proved to be a Girl [Léontine Emilie].

La Fayette later wrote to James Madison on June 10, 1807:

We Have Had the Misfortune to Loose a female Child of His, four Weeks old [Léontine Emilie]. My Younger daughter Virginia Has Lately presented us With an other infant of the Same Sex [Marie Pauline]. My Wife’s Health is Not Worse at this Moment, But Ever too Bad.

As a sidenote because it confused me while searching for the letter; the archives list Adrienne as the author. I am certain that is wrong because a) Adrienne was not corresponding with James Madison, b) this is not her writing style but La Fayette’s, c) the letter does not have her typical signature and d) there is the passage about the authors wife’s health – this one at the least gives it away.

Identifying Léontine Emilie was actually quite a bit of luck as well. I found the letter to Madison by accident and that letter is the only source that mentions her that I know of. I have never seen her in any other letters, documentation, contemporary or secondary books. The letter helped to narrow her birthday and her date of death down and with that information I searches the archives in Paris and Courpalay in the hopes of finding the child – and I was lucky. While I of course understand the order of things, it still saddens me to see that you can be born into such a prominent family – your father was a Marquis, your grand-father was the Marquis, and still, not even your families biographers care to even mention you.

Virginie und Louis: For all I know, and I again have to say that I have not nearly as much data/correspondence as I would like with regard to these topics, Virginie never lost a child. There is always the question what La Fayette would feel comfortable telling and to whom. There is also the question if La Fayette himself was always aware of everything. For example, in the case of a miscarriage very early on in the pregnancy he might have not included it in his correspondence or in fact maybe not even known himself.

As much as would wish a happy family life for Virginie, stillbirths, infant deaths and especially miscarriages were and still are not uncommon.

I have put excerpts from a few more letters by La Fayette to his American friends under the cut that help identify his grandchildren.

I am Here, with my Wife, Son, daughter in law, and New Born little grand daughter [Natalie Renée Émilie] taking Care of my Wounds, and Stretching My Rusted Articulations untill I can Return to my Beloved Rural Abode at La Grange.

Audio from Bootleg album "A New Kind Of Rhythm!", released in 2007 by Madison label. This CD contains full soundboard recording from an Elvis concert recorded live at the Riverfront Coliseum on March 21, 1976 (evening concert at 8:30 pm), Cincinnati, Ohio.

FUN FACT: Elvis performed twice that day at the Riverfront Coliseum. For the afternoon concert (2:30pm), EP was wearing the "Blue Egyptian Bird" suit, but at given moment the rear end of that suit teared up due to his movement onstage (no surprise it happened right after Elvis performed "Polk Salad Annie"). He briefly went offstage and changed into the "Rainfall" suit, in which the show moved along. There's another bootleg CD from this concert, with the title "Rippin' It In Cincinnati" (released in 2018 by Straight Arrow label), a clear reference to that one incident onstage. For the evening concert (8:30pm) Elvis wore the "Rainfall" suit again.

After changing his outfit (afternoon concert), picture above shows Elvis showing the rip to his audience. Riverfront Coliseum on March 21, 1976. There's footage of that moment too. You can watch it, here [Dailymotion]. In spite what happened, the Blue Egyptian Bird suit was fixed and Elvis wore it again in many occasions after that one incident.

“But Rashid would go down, meet Daniel, and escort him up,” Armand protests.

“I’ve already spoken to Shamira,” Louis says. “She’ll do it. So, Arun, sit down.”

“You cannot slip, Louis.”

“Fine. Sit down, Rashid.”

Rashid laughs so hard that he coughs on his next bite of muffin. He hears Armand and Louis sit down, and then the elevator whisks open.
