A declassified World War II-era government guide to “simple sabotage” is currently one of the most popular open source books on the internet. The book, called “Simple Sabotage Field Manual,” was declassified in 2008 by the CIA and “describes ways to train normal people to be purposefully annoying telephone operators, dysfunctional train conductors, befuddling middle managers, blundering factory workers, unruly movie theater patrons, and so on. In other words, teaching people to do their jobs badly.”

Over the last week, the guide has surged to become the 5th-most-accessed book on Project Gutenberg, an open source repository of free and public domain ebooks. It is also the fifth most popular ebook on the site over the last 30 days, having been accessed nearly 60,000 times over the last month (just behind Romeo and Juliet).

“Sabotage varies from highly technical coup de main acts that require detailed planning and the use of specially-trained operatives, to innumerable simple acts which the ordinary individual citizen-saboteur can perform,” the guide begins. “Simple sabotage does not require specially prepared tools or equipment; it is executed by an ordinary citizen who may or may not act individually and without the necessity for active connection with an organized group; and it is carried out in such a way as to involve a minimum danger of injury, detection, and reprisal.”

The guide’s intro was written by William “Wild Bill” Donovan, who was the head of the Office of Strategic Services during World War II, which later inspired the creation of the CIA. The motivating factor for writing the guide, according to a passage within it, is that citizen saboteurs were highly effective at resisting the Nazis during World War II, and the Office of Strategic Services wanted to detail other ways sabotage could be done: “Acts of simple sabotage are occurring throughout Europe. An effort should be made to add to their efficiency, lessen their detectability, and increase their number,” the guide states. “Widespread practice of simple sabotage will harass and demoralize enemy administrators and police,” the guide states, adding that citizens often undertake acts of sabotage not for their own immediate personal gain, but to resist “particularly obnoxious decrees.”

Because it was written during active wartime, the book includes various suggestions for causing physical violence and destruction, such as starting fires, flooding warehouses, breaking tools, etc. But it also includes many suggestions for how to just generally be annoying within a bureaucracy or office setting. Simple sabotage ideas include:

“Insist on doing everything through ‘channels.’ Never permit short-cuts to be taken in order to expedite decisions.”

“Make ‘speeches.’ Talk as frequently as possible and at great length. Illustrate your ‘points’ by long anecdotes and accounts of personal experiences. Never hesitate to make a few appropriate ‘patriotic’ comments.”

“Bring up irrelevant issues as frequently as possible.”

“Haggle over precise wordings of communications, minutes, resolutions.”

“‘Misunderstand’ orders. Ask endless questions or engage in long correspondence about such orders. Quibble over them when you can.”

“In making work assignments, always sign out the unimportant jobs first. See that the important jobs are assigned to inefficient workers of poor machines.”

“To lower morale and with it, production, be pleasant to inefficient workers; give them undeserved promotions. Discriminate against efficient workers; complain unjustly about their work.”

“Hold conferences when there is more critical work to be done.”

“Multiply paperwork in plausible ways.”

“Make mistakes in quantities of material when you are copying orders. Confuse similar names. Use wrong addresses.”

“Work slowly. Think out ways to increase the number of movements necessary on your job”

“Pretend that instructions are hard to understand, and ask to have them repeated more than once. Or pretend that you are particularly anxious to do your work, and pester the foreman with unnecessary questions.”

“Snarl up administration in every possible way. Fill out forms illegibly so that they will have to be done over; make mistakes or omit requested information in forms.”

Shukran Ya Allah (Divine gratitude) for, and Bismillah (With the name of Allah), to a more confidently reconceptualised time in humanity where we can purposefully declare our truth of following the passage of time within the Islamic calendar - also known as the Lunar or Hijri calendar - to determine the dates of religious events and observances. This Hijri calendar is based on 12 lunar months – a new month begins when a new moon is sighted.

#1. We entered Muharram on the month ofJune 2025 according to the Gregorian calendar, that conventionally follows the sun, which is the first month of the Islamic calendar in the Islamic New Year of 1446-1447 AH. Muharram holds greater significance as one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Qur'an and in which significant milestones occurred across the lives of our Anbiya (Prophets). Khalifa Rubina mirrored Shaykha Müzeyyen's emphasis on the value of prayer to channel positive possibilities for the way ahead during this turbulent time in humanity. Khalifa Rubina empowered us to develop our own love language by drawing on Allah's blessed Names and attributes. However, I am often left marveling at our beloved Shaykh Taner's soulfully constructed Positivity Prayers that we've been gifted:

That includes Shaykha Müzeyyen's subsequent addition of Ya Wadud Ya Nur Ya Salaam (Yearning Allah's Love, Divine Light and Peace), which has become resounding in its relevance for adressing both the micro and macro levels of this current time. Shukran Ya Allah, for all the sources of inspirational spiritual guidance! Here, I am reminded of our late Shaykh Taner's humoured interjection. "When have we not suffered with a sense of apocalyptic demise in humanity?!"

#2. During our local Jumu'ah Sohbet during the first week of Muharram 1446-1447 AH, Shaykh Nishaat professed profound haqq (truth) when he simply stated that to live in the world is to practice our faith. The Sufi path is about practice because Allah is not our servant! However, this entails entrusting the outcomes to Allah after we have submitted and surrendered to Islam. That means keeping patience for the full picture of our circumstances to materialise. We shouldn't be arrested in shock when we're put on trial. The deeper inquisition should be, what our connection to Allah is, in every moment and circumstance that we go through ...?

Additionally, he said that we cannot dismiss our material senses because they provide us with the opportunity to learn and perceive Allah. After all, we were created to know one another through our physical and material senses, and we've been blessed with channeling our spiritual consciousness through our school of Sufism. Again, Shukran Ya Allah for the naturally deep contemplation and purpose that is infused in our practice of Islam, as surrender, within each of our actions.

#3. An earlier spiritual reflection offered by Shaykh Nishaat on "Serving and Being of Service - on the Sufi path" struck my conscience with inner Nur (Divine light) that I was made to reintrepret as "poetry" 💡 Yet again 😄 Poetry is as it does ...

SERVICE

Inspired by beloved Shaykh Nishaat's prose as Tasmi Bodhanya's interpretation thereof

Khidmah or service is actually about learning to love

Beyond just materialising a feeling into performing an action instead

An awakened heart that desires to serve, help, clean, support, and above all, love

Transitioning from the identity of me to we and us

Materialising a transformation from one to the One animating its khidmah

Not an extra chore on the Sufi path

That is reserved for the lower ranked or less advanced

But an essential training tool for the nafs committed to polishing the heart

Thereby gaining nearness and closeness to Allah

It humbles the ego, opens the heart, and enables learning through doing

The living heart-space of the dergah becomes a mirror of learning that reflects truth as a teacher

More than just a place of Zikr but one that includes companionship through the chores

Sweeping floors, cooking meals, washing dishes, cleaning bathrooms, serving tea and food

Beyond a single construct, it adapts to the needs of the space and capacities of its people

A practical, lived experience as practice ground

For accustomed students, it involves offering guidance to the newer ones amongst the older and younger

The dergah provides the spiritual rebirth of the seeker because enacting communal chores is a doorway to annhilating pride

Offering protection, structure, and opportunities for purification

No different to ritual worship in its potential for awakening

An initial request for others' service grows into an avid desire for it and ultimately unto its surrender

Beyond resistance, complaints, and the eternal desire for praise

The true moral quandary is why not just spend more time performing Zikr?!

The truth is that the ego can hide in the simple act of Zikr

Whereas in service, hiding is harder pretense

Real-time reactions are livestreamed in order to be seen and softened

Such as anger, laziness, jealousy, and the never-ending desire for praise

By enacting humble tasks, extraordinary things can happen

As the heart reflects more of the qualities of Allah

The soul recognises that service equates to Divine nearness and closeness

Not necessarily acquired through grand spiritual experiences and extraordinary abilities

But in the ordinary moments, nafs is gratefully forgotten for a while

A saying of our most beloved Prophet (SAW) is that a leader of the people is their servant

A sense of service mastered by our other beloved Shaykh Nureddin Ozal

The discovered mystery of service is that one finds the One in the act of serving Him

Manifesting surrender in both teaching and practice

As deepened love between all in our return journey to the Source of us

Service is the adhab of the Sufi path

Outwardly ordinary in appearance but as a secret key that leads to inner transformation

Contingent on sincerety where sincere effort is its currency

Regular service sees a heart transformed from self into realising unending love and joy in serving others

Even with a tired body coexists a nourished soul

Often found behind the scenes with shining hearts above all else

The ego is thus trained, not through lectures or punishment

Instead, through gentle discipline, service, and love

The ultimate goal is to be a servant and devotee of Allah as The True Reality

Materialising service wherever one is, whether with family or strangers

The Sufi student thus carries the spirit of service everywhere

Serving with an open heart without the need for recognition

With love for its Source
