A declassified World War II-era government guide to “simple sabotage” is currently one of the most popular open source books on the internet. The book, called “Simple Sabotage Field Manual,” was declassified in 2008 by the CIA and “describes ways to train normal people to be purposefully annoying telephone operators, dysfunctional train conductors, befuddling middle managers, blundering factory workers, unruly movie theater patrons, and so on. In other words, teaching people to do their jobs badly.”

Over the last week, the guide has surged to become the 5th-most-accessed book on Project Gutenberg, an open source repository of free and public domain ebooks. It is also the fifth most popular ebook on the site over the last 30 days, having been accessed nearly 60,000 times over the last month (just behind Romeo and Juliet).

“Sabotage varies from highly technical coup de main acts that require detailed planning and the use of specially-trained operatives, to innumerable simple acts which the ordinary individual citizen-saboteur can perform,” the guide begins. “Simple sabotage does not require specially prepared tools or equipment; it is executed by an ordinary citizen who may or may not act individually and without the necessity for active connection with an organized group; and it is carried out in such a way as to involve a minimum danger of injury, detection, and reprisal.”

The guide’s intro was written by William “Wild Bill” Donovan, who was the head of the Office of Strategic Services during World War II, which later inspired the creation of the CIA. The motivating factor for writing the guide, according to a passage within it, is that citizen saboteurs were highly effective at resisting the Nazis during World War II, and the Office of Strategic Services wanted to detail other ways sabotage could be done: “Acts of simple sabotage are occurring throughout Europe. An effort should be made to add to their efficiency, lessen their detectability, and increase their number,” the guide states. “Widespread practice of simple sabotage will harass and demoralize enemy administrators and police,” the guide states, adding that citizens often undertake acts of sabotage not for their own immediate personal gain, but to resist “particularly obnoxious decrees.”

Because it was written during active wartime, the book includes various suggestions for causing physical violence and destruction, such as starting fires, flooding warehouses, breaking tools, etc. But it also includes many suggestions for how to just generally be annoying within a bureaucracy or office setting. Simple sabotage ideas include:

“Insist on doing everything through ‘channels.’ Never permit short-cuts to be taken in order to expedite decisions.”

“Make ‘speeches.’ Talk as frequently as possible and at great length. Illustrate your ‘points’ by long anecdotes and accounts of personal experiences. Never hesitate to make a few appropriate ‘patriotic’ comments.”

“Bring up irrelevant issues as frequently as possible.”

“Haggle over precise wordings of communications, minutes, resolutions.”

“‘Misunderstand’ orders. Ask endless questions or engage in long correspondence about such orders. Quibble over them when you can.”

“In making work assignments, always sign out the unimportant jobs first. See that the important jobs are assigned to inefficient workers of poor machines.”

“To lower morale and with it, production, be pleasant to inefficient workers; give them undeserved promotions. Discriminate against efficient workers; complain unjustly about their work.”

“Hold conferences when there is more critical work to be done.”

“Multiply paperwork in plausible ways.”

“Make mistakes in quantities of material when you are copying orders. Confuse similar names. Use wrong addresses.”

“Work slowly. Think out ways to increase the number of movements necessary on your job”

“Pretend that instructions are hard to understand, and ask to have them repeated more than once. Or pretend that you are particularly anxious to do your work, and pester the foreman with unnecessary questions.”

“Snarl up administration in every possible way. Fill out forms illegibly so that they will have to be done over; make mistakes or omit requested information in forms.”

Tucker Foley Bedroom🛏️

     Made a bedroom for my version of Tucker! I went for HUGE Gamer vibes👾🎮

I added as much Game stuff as I could such as action figures, a whole gamer desk set up and all sorts of other game decor. The action figures in the middle are based on the characters they played in the Doomed video game they played in Teacher Of the Year, The blue one has a Halo style sword! That wolf girl is also from the show in Reality Trip that Tucker thought was hot from that comic convention.

I also added a bit of his inventor/smart teen vibes in there as well with the tool box and Phantom Drone he’s working on like how he was suppose to in the show’s future! I also added an inspirational quote from Lewis Howard Latimer, a famous Black Inventor, a Hidden Figures poster, a finished Rubik’s cube, binders that could be for recording his research, a University of Minnesota flag(Heard Amity’s suppose to be Minnesota) and some ribbons I see him won from science fairs! I like showing him with a big brain🧠💡

💡 A game that inspired my own design or creative practice.

Dwindle by Caro Asercion has been a source of inspiration for me recently! Their game design always stands out to me as gorgeously streamlined: it’s efficient, not in the sense of minimalism or stripping out flavor to leave only mechanics, but in a way that feels respectful of the reader's time.

I could go off about it for ages but the one thing I'll highlight is the way character stats work. I think it's really special when gameplay feels meaningfully in step with the genre and emotional tenor of the game and Dwindle really succeeds there:

✍ Favorite thing about writing the muse?

Brianne’s overt politeness amuses me to write. I also like putting her in “out-of-office” situations that are awkward or uncomfortable and challenge her polite sensibilities, but ultimately make her grow as a person. I also like having a kind muse with cares about others even to her detriment.

👀 Favorite thing about the muse’s appearance?

Her thin, petite frame. That she looks both soft and eloquent. That symmetrical face she has. Her cute nose.. :') Her face claim really matches her perfectly.

💕 Favorite ship for the muse? 

The otp is Brianne and Santiago ( @badtrigger ), but I’m torn on my favorite verse for them. Is it the happiest one? The saddest? Is it one we haven’t fully cooked or written/conceived of yet? It’s hard to choose but I always choose them. They complement each other (sunshine + grump) and my muse feels whole when they are together. It's like she found her missing half. He gives her that happiness she didn't realize existed.

😈 Worst thing you’ve ever done to your muse? 

In her Far Cry: New Dawn verse, a few years after she’s reunited with the love of her life (Santiago) and they start to rekindle what they lost after the end of the world and over 10 years apart, she is shot and killed by raiders while working in the Highwaymen gardens. It’s a devastating end, heartbreaking for Santiago who finds her too late, but it’s also real to the realities of that harsh post-apocalyptic world. We did this to them. ;;

💡 What inspires you to write the muse?

Besties like you! Plus the source material (yay for franchises with a lot of texts). I might be a bit of a canon snob but I love the source material sm and I’m not interested in overhauling it. I try so hard to make it (Bri and her story) make sense. Wikis give me a ton of inspiration and I love mining through lore and using canon to enhance my muse’s narrative and add flavor to my writing.

I've mostly been working on a Phoebe and Silas (Foul Lady Fortune) Modern AU recently. Here's. Piece of that

Silas almost nodded, but then he remembered that she couldn’t see him. He couldn’t see her. He couldn’t look for the flicker of emotion. He couldn’t even have the barest idea of what Phoebe was thinking, but if he took it at face value, at least she wanted him. Silas would be anything she wanted him to be as long as he could be near her. Who was he to ask for more? Who was he to say no to Phoebe Hong?

What inspires you and your writing?

Well, for fanfiction, it's usually music. I love taking inspiration from songs and then expanding on that. I've written two different fanfictions based off the song Tis the Damn Season (one Zoyalai and one Philas), so that song might be my biggest source of inspiration haha.

Besides that, I take inspiration from things I want to expand on or explore in my own life or the piece of media. Like with The Road Not Taken, I wanted to explore Zoya's view of marriage and how that goes with independence and success and explore it for myself at the same times.

Other things, I get inspiration from hoping to make my readers (my friends especially) feel a certain way. Make them laugh, cry. That's mostly for the Secret Shanghai fandom.

Then, for original writing, I haven't found that much inspiration yet sadly.

💢Something about the muse that annoys you?

There aren't really things that quite annoy me about Shota, but he is far from a flawless individual. The guy can be rather cold and could use a some manners and a bit more common courtesy. I think the thing that might annoy me about Shota is that he can be incredibly stubborn person.

💡 What inspires you to write the muse? 

I feel that he is admirable despite me ignoring this bitch for like 2 seasons. I think for most roleplayers, whether we see it or not, are allured the characters that we write is the fact that we see a bit of ourselves within them. A few things that come to my mind are that I am a very caring and selfless person, however sometimes I have trouble trying to express those emotions to others. In the past, I've been an explosive reactor and we see that reoccurring again and again with Mr. Aizawa. While I'm not very good at things like math and I am a sensitive person, my thoughts and analytical personality tend to be based on logic and data/evidence. I've always been a workaholic and Shota is too. I see bits of myself within Shota's character but more importantly, Shota is a person that I've unintentionally aspired to be. I've been writing Aizawa for about 5 years now with a friend and she often joked that I was becoming more and more like Aizawa every day. I kind of wrote it off as her being goofy, but I've come to find that she is right. Like Eraserhead, I never had any real interest in becoming a teacher, I thought about it briefly in high school but decided that it wasn't something I'd like to do. But as of now, I'm working at a daycare and am also a swim instructor who is on his way to becoming a coach. Mr. Aizawa takes care of Eri who is at kindergarten/daycare age and one could say that he is the coach to future heroes. Shota also is one of the harsher teachers at U.A. and last week my boss had said; I see that you're becoming stricter and authoritative with your students. That's a good thing and makes sure that they are listening. I also have become a gym rat and actually look forward to working out now. There were a few more examples that she gave but I can't remember them.
