that hug could have lasted an eternity for all evangeline cared. sometimes words weren't enough. how could they possibly find a way to explain all the changes, all the growing up they did without each other? she knew she had missed having him by her side as her life continued to unfold. it was a magical thing about having a twin: you had someone by your side every step of the way who had an inkling of what you were going through. in the recesses of her mind, she made a silent promise to not let any more moments be missed.

a pang of burning guilt sliced through her at the delivery of his words. the feelings were complicated for everyone involved: a quiet understanding of why secrets were kept though still an intrinsic feeling of betrayal after years of confiding even the darkest parts of their life to one another. it used to feel like there would never be a right moment to explain what happened behind the perfectly angled photos. confrontation, especially highly violent exchanges, made her go numb. her mind would wander into a place her body couldn't reach as she felt she watched what unfolded from a balcony seat at an opera house. but how in the world was she supposed to explain that when even accessing the memories would cause the detachment to begin? another "I'm sorry." was all she could muster right now. it was all too fresh.

evangeline watched as benji's wide eyes studied her brother. she couldn't imagine how surreal it must be to have someone who had previously only been a face on a screen now stand in front of you. "you live in the phone." he said simply, a finger chubby from baby fat melding into toddlerhood pointed up at him. she couldn't help but let out a soft laugh, a laugh so soft from years of having it snuffed out. "remember what you and mama talked about on the plane, lovey? that we're going to go stay where uncle wes calls us from? that's why we had to take our big adventure?" dark eyes moved their attention back to her, his entire being giving off the aura more of a middle-aged man than a two-year-old.

"I no want to live in the phone"

after a few moments of reassuring and explaining the situation, evangeline managed to get benji on her hip. the jet lag was beginning to set in and she imagined his first moments in his new home would be spent dead asleep. she thanked wes as they began walking, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings for herself. "I'm very excited to meet her officially as well. with the way you talk about her, she must be the best person on earth." a soft nudge of her shoulder buttoned her words paired with a cheeky smile. maybe there should have been a slight ache of jealousy having to look at your twin get the kind of partner you thought you were going to have. but evangeline felt nothing but happiness when she heard wes speak about liza. it was a beautiful, unique position to watch someone you care about find their person. and he needed his. "and miss elise! I can't believe she's already one."

amelia's name ushered the same odd feeling she had while sitting on the plane: excitement and fear. "how is amelia doing?" her eyes studying his face for anything unsaid that popped up on his face. "she told me she's working at a crystal shop now?"

it still stunned her how much could change in two simple years. the night she left seemed like another lifetime ago. maybe it was. maybe this was the beginning of a new evangeline. one who was no longer tethered to fear like a junkyard dog. but starting new also meant accepting the past. and there was so much still hidden in the corners she'd pushed them into.

"there really is."

Wes held his sister tight in his arms as so many emotions whirled through him. He was happy to see her, hurt that she’d lied to him, angry at her husband for hurting her. Wes even felt a pang of guilt at the thought of how he’d spent his whole life trying to protect his sisters, yet he wasn’t around when Evangeline needed him the most. Wes swallowed hard and squeezed his eyes shut to keep away any tears wanting to form in his eyes and he simply tightened his arms around her.

“I understand.” His voice was quiet and soft. He understood what it was like to want to hide things from the people you love to spare their feelings. It was exactly why Wes didn’t tell Amelia about Liza’s miscarriage back in the summer. He knew it was hurt Amelia so he never told her. However, it was Liza who helped him understand that Evangeline keeping the abuse a secret was the same reason he hadn’t told Amelia about it, and it was that that helped Wes understand. Understanding, however, didn’t mean it hurt any less.

When Evangeline pulled away, Wes gave her a smile even though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. He was so happy to have her back with him but he wished the reason for their reunion would have been different. “It is happy. We’re together again, you’re safe, you get to meet my wife and my daughter. And you…” Wes turned his attention to his nephew, his face softening a bit despite the second pang of guilt he felt for missing years of his nephew’s life. “I get to meet you.” Wes knelt in front of Benji and couldn’t help but note just how much he looked like himself and Evangeline. Wes tried not to think about how Evangeline and Wes looked so much like their father.

Once introductions were finished, Wes grabbed his sister’s luggage and led the way. “I know Lizzie’s excited to meet you and Amelia is excited to see you. There’s a lot to catch up on.” His voice was a bit softer as he said the last part, knowing her side of catching up wasn’t going to be easy to talk about. If she even wanted to talk about it.

my take on young Anthony and Jessica Lockwood. The few things we know about these siblings is so damn tragic, huh? I feel bad for Jessica, she's not really a character in the story but she has so much presence. I have a crazy Visitor!Jessica/Source!Lockwood concept au in my head you if you wanna hear it some time...

anyways about THIS art, i had some trouble picturing what Jessica looked like. I know Lockwood's had a couple of instances where he saw his sister in place of Lucy, but, lol, i don't want her to look like Lucy, and honestly I can make a case that he had trauma hallucinations or something to explain that away. But! I've always pictured her kinda girly, and wears a lot of blue. I also think of her having straight(er) hair while Anthony has curly hair.
