Cerebral palsy   What is Cerebral palsy? According to the NHS, cerebral palsy is “the name for a group of lifelong conditions that affect movement and co-ordination. It's caused by a problem with the brain that develops before, during or soon after birth.”     Symptoms “Symptoms become noticeable in the first 2 or 3 years of a child's life.” The symptoms are: delays in reaching development milestones – for example, not sitting by 8 months or not walking by 18 months seeming too stiff or too floppy weak arms or legs fidgety, jerky or clumsy movements random, uncontrolled movements walking on tiptoes a range of other problems – such as swallowing difficulties, speaking problems, vision problems and learning disabilities ·         Vary from each person as it may be minor or lead to the people being “severely disabled”.   Causes ·         Caused by undeveloped brain “while in the womb, is damaged during or soon after birth.” ·         Causes of cerebral palsy include: o   bleeding in the baby's brain or reduced blood and oxygen supply to their brain o   an infection caught by the mother during pregnancy o   the brain temporarily not getting enough oxygen (asphyxiation) during a difficult birth o   meningitis o   a serious head injury   Treatment ·         Currently no cure but there is treatment, such as: o   physiotherapy – techniques such as exercise and stretching to help maintain physical ability and hopefully improve movement problems o   speech therapy to help with speech and communication, and swallowing difficulties o   occupational therapy – where a therapist identifies problems that you or your child have carrying out everyday tasks, and suggests ways to make these easier o   medicine for muscle stiffness and other difficulties o   in some cases, surgery to treat movement or growth problems Reference https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/cerebral-palsy/ . . . #discover_physiotherapy #physiostudent #physiotherapy #physio #physiogram #physiotherapists #neurophysiology #neuroscience #neurodiversity #neuro #neurology #brain #brainhealth #braintumor #celebral #palsy # https://www.instagram.com/p/CG8G9VHngEP/?igshid=1d3yqivwzz7j6

Connective Tissue’s Fibres   Types of Fibres ·         There are three types of fibres that provide support: o   Collagen Fibres – “Fibrous proteins and are secreted into the extracellular space and they provide high tensile strength to the matrix.” This can be found in your bones, cartilages, tendons and ligaments. o   Elastic Fibres – “Long, thin fibres that form a branching network in the extracellular matrix. They help the connective tissue to stretch and recoil.” This can be found in your skin, blood vessels, lung tissues and small percentage in tendons. o   Reticular Fibres – “short, fine collagenous fibres that can branch extensively to form a delicate network.” It “acts as a supporting mesh in soft tissues such as liver, bone marrow, and the tissues and organs of the lymphatic system”.   Reference ·         https://courses.lumenlearning.com/boundless-ap/chapter/connective-tissue/ ·         https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reticular_fiber . . . #discover_physiotherapy #physiotherapy #physiotherapy_world #physio #physiogram #physiotherapystudent #physiolife #physiostudent #physiotherapie #physiology #exercisephysiology #anatomyandphysiology #fibres #tissue #education #educational #educationmatters #educationalresources #educationfirst https://www.instagram.com/p/CG4leW7HjD5/?igshid=3k2wy1f758xl

Biceps femoris   Description It’s a long muscle that spans from the posterior aspect of the posterior thigh. The biceps femoris forms the posterior compartment (hip extensors) of the thigh with semitendinosus, semimembranosus and gluteus maximus. It extends and externally rotates the hip and flexes and externally rotates the knee.   Origin Long head: ischial tuberosity Short head: linea aspera and distal femur -          Short head: linea aspera and the furthest area of the femur   - Distal = Furthest area to the center of the body   Insertion Lateral aspect of head of fibula -Aspect on the outer head of the fibula   - Lateral = Body part that is farther from the middle or center of the body   Nerve supply Long head: tibial division of sciatic nerve (L5-S2) Short head: common fibular division of sciatic nerve (L5-S2)   Blood supply Inferior gluteal artery, perforating arteries, popliteal artery   Action Hip joint: thigh extension and external(lateral) rotation Knee joint: flexion and external(lateral) rotation of the leg Stabilizes pelvis   Reference https://www.kenhub.com/en/library/anatomy/biceps-femoris-muscle https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biceps_femoris_muscle  . . . #discover_physiotherapy #physiotherapy #physiotherapy_world #physio #physiogram #physiotherapists #physiotherapists #physiolife #physiotherapist #physiotherapystudent #thigh #anatomy #anatomystudy #knee #anatomypractice #origin #insertion #blood #arteries #artery #nerves #nerve #nervepain #body #education #educationmatters #educational https://www.instagram.com/p/CG2j0VjHhoF/?igshid=rlu2cm5anpq

Bronchiectasis   What is Bronchiectasis? According to the NHS, Bronchiectasis is “a long-term condition where the airways of the lungs become abnormally widened, leading to a build-up of excess mucus that can make the lungs more vulnerable to infection.”   Symptoms The symptoms of bronchiectasis are: persistent cough that usually brings up phlegm (sputum) breathlessness “Once you have the infection the symptoms tend to worsen”   Causes ·         “In the UK, the three most common causes are: o   “previously having a lung infection, like pneumonia or whooping cough”. “That damages the bronchi”. o   “underlying problems with the immune system (the body's defence against infection) that make the bronchi more vulnerable to damage from an infection” o   “allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) – an allergy to a certain type of fungi that can cause the bronchi to become inflamed if spores from the fungi are inhaled” ·         There may be “no causes for the condition”. “This is known as idiopathic bronchiectasis.” Treatment ·         “Bronchiectasis is permanent”, but there are treatments to help the symptoms, these include: o   Exercises o   Special devices to clear mucus from your lungs o   Medicine to promote airflow in your lungs o   Antibiotics to treat lung infections ·          “Surgery is performed in rare cases where no other treatments work”   Reference ·         https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/bronchiectasis/ . . . #discover_physiotherapy #physiotherapy #physiotherapy_world #physio #physiotherapist #bronchiectasis #symptoms #symptom #cough #coughing #sputum #infection #infectioncontrol #infectionprevention #infected #disinfection #causes #awarecauses #treatment #treatments #respiratorytherapist #respiratorytherapy #respirator #respirator #respiratorysupport #respiratorysystem #respiratorystudent https://www.instagram.com/p/CGpvDAcHeQi/?igshid=1wqq2mmx8m3bc

Connective Tissue’s structure (Summary) Summary ·         The connective tissue consists of three main components: o   Specialised cells (living component) – “bones contain Osteocytes, and osteoblasts” which makes up the bone. Whereas “cartilage contains chondrocytes and chondroblasts” which builds up cartilages. o   Fibres – There are three types of fibres: collagen fibres, reticular fibres and elastic fibres o   Ground substance – it’s “a molecular sieve for substances to travel between blood capillaries and cells” ·         “The ground substance and fibres make up the extracellular matrix.” (non-living component) ·         The components will be explored in greater detail in the next three physiology posts!! According to the NHS, epilepsy is “a common condition that affects the brain and causes frequent seizures.” “Seizures are bursts of electrical activity in the brain that temporarily affect how it works.
