You know what fucks with me, with Chris a confirmed summer baby that means he was conceived December-ish and most don't really notice they're pregnant until two months later, so Shannon didn't know until like February. If they had Chris at 19 and they graduated high school at 18, then it happened after they'd left high school for a few months. They could have started college already, they were probably on their way in chasing the dreams they wanted to have, maybe even doing long distance and seeing each other on Christmas break when Chris was conceived (if they named him after his conception sex, I'll scream lmao). Like how far along were they into working toward their future were they when they had Chris? How long did they try and convince themselves it was going to work, before they had to drop out? The fact that we know barely anything about that period of the Diaz family's life haunts me with all the possibilities there are.

Fic Update: Things We're All Too Young to Know

Emotional about this and can't find the words, really... But here's the LAST CHAPTER. After two years.

Summary:

Happily ever after <3

Snippet:

They’d booked this trip back in January. Buck has been so excited. But right before they were set to leave, the 114 C shift’s captain got shingles, and Buck had to move his schedule around to cover A and C shifts for a week. Basically, delaying him a little. No biggie. Eddie drove up with the kids - splitting the driving with Chris, who can do short spurts - a day before Buck. Unfortunately, Brooke thought this was the end of the world as she knew it. Nothing could be more cruel or inhumane than her having to arrive at Lake Tahoe without Buck. She wept and protested and honest to god stomped her feet. She’s not prone to tantrums, but she can be sort of particular about things going according to plan, so it wasn’t a total surprise.

In response, Buck had promised Brooke a day of swimming and nonstop fun. Also not surprising. He drove up yesterday after his shift ended. Didn’t arrive until pretty late. Brooke had already gone to sleep. He was completely wiped, and hardly had the energy to chat with Chris and Eddie.

“Brooke,” Eddie says. “Dad had a really long trip. He’s tired. I promise you two can swim a bit later.”

She pouts. 

But, on the other side of the bed, Buck takes a deep breath and rolls over to face them. 

“I’m up,” he says, voice hoarse and groggy. “It’s okay, I’m awake.”

Calling it now - this episode is going to really play on the buck wanting kids and Eddie and his constant saving children (and his want for more kids) and play on them wanting to give kids what they didn’t get themselves as children - that’s why Eddie is always first in to save kids and why we’re getting a buck and Jee baking scene.

It’s all about parenthood - the desire to be a parent (to have their kid back).

I think the sperm donor arc might be coming back into play for buck - and be part of the issues that arise with tommy - buck wanting kids v Tommy not wanting them etc.

Happy birthday to me… I guess. Papi didn’t make it home until evening, so he missed the cake. And he didn’t get me a bat and a glove. I don’t know if he remembered. I reminded him before he left, but I guess it was a dismissive grumble. I should have known. Besides, money doesn’t grow on trees.

I know Adri is turning 16, so she’ll have her license soon and she’ll need a car and Soph has been begging for dance classes. Plus, the sink broke a while ago. Mom called the plumber, because papi wasn’t here, so that cost a lot. Next time, I should see if I can fix it before she does to spare costs. Still, I’m a little sad about not getting the bat and glove. Maybe he meant Christmas, since technically it’s not a year now? I hope so. I’ll just continue to borrow Cody’s glove or one from school for now. The tshirts were nice too, I shouldn’t complain, with the way I’m growing, I needed new shirts. I got three and two are actually okay to be seen with in public.

Also Soph spilled her drink over her slice and cried about it, so mom made me switch with her. That sucked. Juice flavored chocolate cake and soggy whipped cream isn’t as nice. But that is bound to happen, maybe she’s less clumsy when she’s ten. And those dancing classes might help. Maybe mom will let me have an extra cookie to make up for it.

Truly just paused in my tracks because my brain had A Thought, and that Thought is Marcus Sköld (from young royals) and Tommy Kinard (from 9-1-1) give off the same vibes. Granted, they both have very little screen time in their respective shows. They’re dismissive of their partner’s signals and verbal requests (Simon not wanting anything serious with ANYONE post-video/breakup with Wille, Buck talking about his struggle with Bobby’s near death experience while Tommy makes a daddy joke). They’re both so clearly plot devices for a different endgame ship (Wilmon, Buddie), but a few wild corners of each fandom started shipping them with their temporary love interests anyway. They don’t fit in with their partner’s inner circle (we barely ever see Marcus interact with anyone besides Simon, Tommy has bad blood with basically Buck’s entire family that knew him before the two of them met). They’re willing to take shots at their partner when they feel like they’ve been done dirty (Marcus during the ENTIRE breakup scene with Simon at the stables, Tommy making a closet joke and almost outing Buck to Eddie and Marisol bc Buck didn’t cop to being on a date the first chance he got). Neither are genuinely trying to connect to their partner, or if they are, it’s done with a marginal amount of effort (Marcus coming to the dance at Hillerska, but later berating Simon for not appreciating this effort taken enough, Tommy coming to the bachelor party for Chimney that Buck plans, but without an actual costume, and leaving as soon as everyone decides Chimney’s a no-show…unlike Eddie, who sticks by Buck’s side for literally the rest of the night).

Fic Update: Things We're All Too Young to Know

A scene I have waited A LONG time to write, here.

Summary:

Buck and Eddie meet their daughter.

Snippet:

“Not that I don’t entirely sympathize,” Bobby says. “But I think Eddie might be right that you need to breathe a little.”

“Ugh,” Buck groans. “I know.”

“Save that reserve of energy,” Bobby counsels. “You’re gonna need it.”

Buck sighs. He knows Bobby is right. He should probably be trying to bank sleep instead of stress. 

“It all just feels out of my control, you know?” Buck says. “Like if something goes wrong at this point, what can I do?”

“Nothing,” Bobby says. “There’s nothing.”

“See? That sucks!”

Bobby smiles. “That’s parenthood, though. That’s just… How a lot of it is.”

Buck nods. He knows that. Conceptually, he knows that. He just doesn’t like feeling it. He likes being able to do something. Manage potential problems. Be the solution. And as much as he knows that a baby a day overdue is not actually a problem, it just feels like the beginning of that anxious feeling he can’t do anything to solve.
