Voice actors are NOT the same as actors.

It takes a specific kind of skill-set and training to be able to warp and meld the voice. It takes a certain kind of talent and dedication to hone that talent into the ability to meld the voice and invoke emotion with one's voice alone. Actors are used to using their voice secondarily to their body language and their facial expressions. It's all mirrored back on camera. They do have nuance. But it's a different kind of nuance and a different kind of training to produce that nuance.

Voice actors might get their likeness transposed on their character's design, and maybe their mannerisms might seep into the character's animation. But when it's all said and done: their presence is in their voice. They are bringing a character to life, showing that emotion in their voice, trying to keep a specific accent, drawl, pitch, tone in that voice and keep it consistent for their recording sessions.

The voice actor is like a classically trained musician who can play first chair in a competitive, world-renown orchestra. The actor (who fills the voice actor's role) is like a moot who played violin in beginner and intermediate high school orchestra and thinks they can get into Juilliard with that 2-4 years of experience.

This doesn't mean that the HS orchestra moot can't play. They can even be really good at it. Maybe they won competitions and sat first chair. But they are not in the same league as the person who's been training their whole lives and lives and breathes to hone their craft using the instrument and all of the training they've ever acquired to perfect it. They are not meant for the same roles. They are not in the same caliber. You do not hire the HS equivalent when you want to play complex music in a competitive orchestra.

Actors are not the same as voice actors.

And furthermore, actors - especially big name actors - taking the roles of animated characters for big budget films or TV pilots makes no sense anyways when - at least in the case of TV pilots - there's not a point to hiring a big budget actors anyways. That money could be used elsewhere (like paying your animators), and the talent that is brought onto the screen for X character could then be hired on to voice said character no recasting required.

I wouldn't say voice acting as a profession is in danger exactly, but it's certainly being disrespected and overlooked for celebrity clout, and this has ALWAYS been an issue. Shoot, even Robin Williams knew that much - which is why he tried so hard not to be used as a marketing chess piece for Aladdin and got royally pissed off when it happened anyways. People shouldn't go to any movie (but especially not animated films) because "oh famous actor is in it". People should go because it's a good movie and the voice acting is good.

People who honest to god think that voice actors are replaceable because "oh well anyone can voice act" or "I like xyz celebrity so naturally it'll be good" ... Honestly I just wish you'd reassess your priorities because you're missing the point and are part of the problem.

Voice Actors ≠ Actors.

#(i am incredibly passionate about this)#(and seeing celebrity voice actors in what should be a voice actor's role completely burns my buns it doesn't matter WHO it is)#(hemsworth as optimus? someone tell me one good reason why they couldn't get a good v/a to replace mr. cullen properly for the future)#(ben shwartz as sonic? dude literally isn't even a good voice actor OR actor anyways-)#(- A N D jason griffith AND my boy roger craig smith are still RIGHT HERE)#(jason griffith IN PARTICULAR would have pulled back SO many sonic fans that went to watch the film anyways. if not /more/.)#(and on top of that he has the same tonality and energy they tried to force this moshmo to try and emulate anyways so GET THE REAL THING)#(chris pratt as mario? i can at least defend /him/ and say that barring his failure to do a NY accent consistently he wasn't terrible)#(but mario's new voice actor could've been used instead and people would've clearly appreciated that WAY more)#(vanessa hudgens as sunny starscout in mlp g5's pilot movie? literally why. they replace her and hitch's va in the show.)#(don't even get me started on the concept of hiring celebrity singers to do musical theatre roles or not letting musical theatre singers-)#(-dub the celebrity voice actors you just HAD to hire for your film bc you're so worried about not getting enough clout to get ppl in seats #(that you're putting it all in this (1) big name hire bc turns out that you have no faith in your writing ability much less-)#(-animation as a medium.)#(and no before anyone says anything : no this is not me saying that ALL celebrity voice castings are bad.)#(there are some that aren't that bad and others that are actually pretty good.)#(i especially appreciate it when actors are damn well aware they aren't voice actors and try to LEARN from voice coaches-)#(-and/or their va predecessors if applicable.)#(that does not change the fact that the celebrity shouldn't have been hired just because the film wanted to have bragging clout-)#(-oh look at this FAMOUS PERSON we were able to hire — yeah ok. sure wendy. i want to know if this film is quality or not.)#(and 9/10 times the SECOND there is money spent on a non voice actor to voice the main character especially)#(that usually means somewhere along the way animation IS going to get shafted. if not w the animators themselves then in the way of-)#(-the actual animation itself and ESPECIALLY the screenwriting because it's especially been so dogshit lately even before the strike.)#(a celebrity being hired to fill a voice actor's role is such an immediate red flag to me and it is VERY rare that i get to be proven wrong

thinking about the scene in book!tbosas where teslee (district three female) was being attacked by the horrifying snakes and she nonverbally pleaded with mizzen (district four male) for help. and he only shook his head, not moving to help her - but the book specifically stated that this was more out of stunned fear/horror than any kind of menace or glee at teslee's imminent death.

and he wasn't even from her district too. they were not in an alliance. she literally had no reason to expect any assistance from him, but district divisions & sectionalism didn't matter when she was scared and in pain. none of these divisions of districts one, two, three, four, five through twelve matter!!! not when children are suffering and dying as penance for a just war that ended several years ago! it's as if the narrative is trying to tell you there is no difference between a suffering/dying child from one district or another.

I never made a visual design but I definitely posted some descriptions of her pretty sure #a wet floor bot... a little wonky and a little off colour. holes in it's damaged and dented casing patched up with scrap #never the same colour. always different #stickers and magnets and a lil bit of spray paint. part of an ear missing and crooked #has one of roxy's spiked bracelets around her neck with a keyring dangling from it like a tag...#she picked her own name and pronouns... doesn't really understand what they are and what they mean but she wants them #in one AU she was Roxy's little distraction. something to work on and repair while the others search the rubble of the plex for-#their friends. In another Roxy repaired her for fun unknowingly after Vanny had used her as a test subject for the virus #in another one post-ruin roxy and cassie were searching the plex for an easy animatronic for roxy to repair so cassie's dad could-#test what she'd learned about repairing them from him and found a salvageable wet floor bot #that they then wrapped in tarp and put in a shopping trolley to take her straight home and get to work on her much to the-#confusion of literally everyone as they barrel down the halls of flats with an unidentified tarp blob in a stolen shopping trolley #<- that one's Meteors AU btw. #Saint Juniper’s Folly #aroaessidhe 2023 reads #this is….okay #writing is quite young - it feels like middle grade. would be fine bc i like middle grade but it's a bit at odds with the fact that #they’re 18 and talking about college soon and driving round in cars a lot #There’s very little ghosty or spookiness - it’s more just about the characters and their developing relationships #I felt like there were quite a few pivotal scenes missing? Like it skips from the kid being back in this town for the first time #to suddenly he’s stuck in this house in the woods. We don’t see him go out there; realise he’s stuck; or anything.#(unless libby skipped a chapter in my audiobook again?)#It also felt like it skipped any of them like testing the supernatural stuff? They go straight to researching the house’s history.#Once the end is revealed it makes sense I guess - but it’s like the because the author forgot to make the characters (who Don’t know)#do the first logical things you might do in a situation like that. idk.#the boys hating each other at the start felt manufactured for some hate to love thing instead of for any reason.....I didn't buy it #Also my pet peeve of: having a character call her dad by his first name! …….but it's an indication of their bad relationship. okay then.#(I know that is also a real experience but MAN sometimes people just do that it's not always a sign of emotional neglect!!!!)#Anyway - I didn’t hate it by any means; there’s just a few little things that didn't work for me

The longer I'm around the more convinced I become that Jill and Michael also had some kinda codependent-besties archetype thing going on?? they may or may not even have been aware of it, but like. they're kind of a matched set, you know? Frequently purchased together, do not separate them

#this is based more on vibe then evidence but like. boy oh boy is there evidence #you could look at how the Lovers archetype affected Raven and Lloyd when they got split up and then compare that to Michael spiraling #idk. obviously there are a lot of factors at play here but like. sort of chronologically-#they were trapped in the tower together and had to stay sane for each other. making up games together. trying not to crack.#she was his first friend. you know?#they show up to the dinner party together. they bring wine and scotch! (she taught him to drink)#(they used to laugh and drink and party together until suddenly they couldn't anymore)#jill takes the chance to admit to lloyd that she worries about michael. to which!!!! lloyd says!! at least he has you #jill and michael's well being has ALWAYS been interwoven #or like. or like. in act 6 in the final battle jill follows her own melody line bc she's ticked and this is personal #compared with michael who doesn't have a personal stake in this other than the playhouse crew being involved!#michael doesn't have his own melody. he sings to the love and a dream playhouse tune bc that's his motivation for fighting #UNTIL jill is in danger!! when Michael jumps in to save her he finally gets his own musical flavor in the song! then it's banjo boy time #idk. there was a lot of loss and multiple different traumas Michael went through after that. but suddenly he's alone again #at least he's not stuck in a swamp or a tower for years but. he's all the way back to square one. he's alone. he doesn't cope well with that #and while he misses all of them he really misses jill. at the worst of it he doesn't even want to reunite with lloyd and david #but like. he's in a real bad way. he's hit rock bottom and he carries so much guilt over not being able to help jill #to the point where even hearing that there's hope is crushing to him bc it means that there Was something he could've done #and he did nothing #he's devastated all over again not just bc he lost her. but bc he abandoned her. he failed her.#we don't have nearly as much about how jill is doing but we do have her song titled Michael about their early relationship #and the way they rely on each other #go listen to that and tell me the narrative wouldn't just eat that up and link their destinies and mental stability #they spent years in level five. you can't tell me they got away with all this unscathed #i definitely think losing son mi was a big part of why michael spiraled but this essay is about jill and michael specifically #hdhjdfhrjrdgtsg how long can post go (challenge mode)#pebble speaks #shaperaverse

the really beautiful landscape/skyscape animation in makoto shinkai's works tends to be the big thing i see focused on and that is understandable and deserved like the weather and lighting effects are unREAL but i do think we should also appreciate how absolute insane the plotlines of his original movies get. at least two movies with in universe catastrophes with major ecological implications. the guns and explosions. theres that one movie i havent seen yet with the guy who turns into a chair (?)

#the worm speaks #real conversation i heard btwn kids at work today #fun fact the girl is the same one as the one who last year when i explained what furries were to the older lids #*kids #she was immediately like 'oh i think i'm a furry then' no hesitation #let's go girl live your best gay furry life #also yesterday there was this tiny little girl probs like 6 or 7 who. two minutes after i very clearly told all the kids #to ABSOLUTELY DO NOT POUR MILK INTO THE TRASH CAN IT WILL ROT AND SMELL VERY VERY SUPREMELY BAD #went and poured her milk into the garbage can.#like girl. you KNOW what you are doing is wrong. so i. scolded her in front of everyone. and then apologized to her for scolding her #in front of everyone bc i should have known better than to do that and pulled her aside to speak privately instead.#*face in hands* unfortunately we live in a society and i am not immune to unlearning bad habits of treating children #unfortunately we also live in a society that doesn't like the stench of rotten milk clinging to the trash cans in the heat of summer.#which is what happened last year when the kids didn't close their milk cartons before dumping them #also this one older boy brought a crochet hook and i am so fascinated by him. he brought practice sewing needles.#as in the big blunt plastic kinds with the ginormous eyes for kids to practice on #he talked abt how walmart only had ugly yarns. he should be hanging out with the little old ladies for REAL!!!

oh yeah we were also wondering why we flock to media with dead kids that haunt the narrative both figuratively and literally and uh :) yeah we know why

#child death tw #rowan seemed so much older when we were kids #but realistically she was barely like 14 #maybe even 12 or 13 #Jason Todd chara and asriel. them mfs from fnaf and maria #they’re dead kids but at the end of the day they’re all apart of someone else’s story #and a lot of them come back. in one way shape or form #with the exception of maria they all come back wrong and hurt and twisted by their deaths #but still deserving of love. still craving it more than anything #being a vessel for someone else’s opinions. barely even themselves #rowan died. and a part of us died with her #that was probably uh.. yknow. That guys last real time being here #cheri took all the stuff as kid. all of it happened to them but buddy boy was still kinda around #and then rowan died and then. She did too #and then Jay had to take over for years and then cheri came back but didn’t know they were cheri until #like they were 17 because they just repressed repressed repressed #and obviously those are very shallow views of those characters #but to a hurting kid who resonated so much with them they were everything #I have no clue why I’m so introspective tonight #but my friends do call me the emotion guy so #I guess it means something. but yeah something died in us when rowan died #but something was also born. rowan was a person. a little girl who should’ve grown up and that’ll never change #but I think this year is the year that we learn to let her go #im happy i got the chance to know her when we did #I hope she’s a fucking butterfly or something really cool like an alligator if her next life #also we already knew why we flocked to this media because duh. but like it helps to know which part of us needs more healing #who needs a therapist when you have me ;)

literally no one else can be around us when my sister and i watch one tree hill. our commentary is insane. we are also too nuanced for others to understand (our big juicy empathetic hearts for dan scott, while also easily condemning him when we feel like it jskfdkf) also it is always roast lucas hour and praise brooke hour. also also, we will regularly scream I HATE THIS SHOW WHO MADE THIS SHOW MARK SCHWAHN WHEN I GET YOU. this is, in fact, our favorite show. but fuck that guy.
