i've processed it. i have thoughts.

discussing the season (especially the finale) yesterday and today, @icantlivewithoutdreaming pointed out the conversation sorrounding the use of a "red herring" throughout s3

red herring [n] something that distracts attention from the real issue — Merriam-Webster Dictionary

i see how some may try to explain what we saw by using this literary device, however, i don't agree. why? let's see.

see loki, for example. all throughout season 1 we're told about the time keepers, how they're the maximum authorities at the TVA, how they were there at the beginning of time and how they'll be there at the end of it, and how they're responsible for the order in the timelines and for keeping the peace, which they do through the agents. now, i want to emphasise the word told because we don't see any of this ourselves, we're just told all of this is true and, just like loki and given none of us know better, we believe it because "why would they lie about this?" this is a red herring, the time keepers are a red herring because they distract us from what is actually true, and it's done in a way that we have no way of knowing if it's all as we're told or not precisely because of that, because we're told, we don't see anything for ourselves so we just have to trust what we're told. we can suspect, of course, but until loki doesn't start poking around and finding things out we're all as much in the dark as him.

now, the bad batch season 3. here we are shown everything, we're not told anything. we see the context for everything the squad goes through, we hear the lines of dialogue directly from who says them, we see all the actions and interactions, as well as the clear allusions to other pieces of media (winter soldier: tech's fall, the reconditioning program, the masked assassins, the fight sequences, the personal stakes when fighting the assassins, etc), we're pretty much presented with everything we need to connect the dots ourselves, as if it was designed for us to do excatly that and draw this very specific conclusion: tech is not dead, he just suffered bucky's same fate, he got winter soldier'ed.

but then what happens? the finale comes out and we're basically told "you see all that which we gave you? all those dots for you to connect? well, psych! it was all a 'distraction', the assassins are no one, you won't even see their faces, if they were literally anyone else it wouldn't fucking matter" and so we're all left like "...what? then... why?" like being smart and analysing the media and it's clues and hints and attempting to unravel that mystery which was clearly given to us only ended up with us being told "you're reading too much into it, it's not that deep, don't be dumb"

that's not a red herring, it honestly just feels like having been gaslit and it sucks.

Aside from that though, I am 26 which means all of my partners NEED to be 18+. Right now I’m specifically on the hunt for four fandoms/pairings: Criminal Minds, Stranger Things, MCU & Teen Wolf.

In Criminal Minds I’d be looking for someone to play Spencer Reid opposite of my character, Olivia Chandler. Olivia is a Gale Weathers type if you know Scream at all, but FAR less of a bitch. I think there’s a lot of longevity for this pair as Olivia is afraid of commitment whereas I see Spencer just hesitant when it comes to romance at all, especially if we set this after Maeve. There’s a lot to her backstory that I think could make for an interesting twist a little further along, but we could do different cases and such and it would be fun!

While I haven’t watched S4 of Stranger Things yet (atp I’m just waiting for S5 to rewatch all of it lol), I know most of what happens, but this plot would take place more of s2-s3 and maybe in an AU space s4. I’d be playing an original character, Nancy and Mike’s troubled cousin from New York, and would want to pair her alongside Billy Hargrove. I think they’re ‘fuck this small town’ attitudes would work well along with other things.

In the MCU I’m looking for someone to play as Loki. Don’t fret if you’re not completely caught up on the more recent marvel projects, as the plot(s) I’m looking for would take place preferably pre-Thor. Pre-thor would be lighthearted until we potentially see Loki discover his true heritage and what that means. What does it mean to him? What does it mean to a girl he’s grown up with (my character)? What does it mean to those around him? Themes like that! I’m totally open to other ideas as well and will definitely send you info on my oc when we connect, but this is the basic plot I have in my head rn!

As for Teen Wolf, I’d love for someone to play Derek Hale against my canon-divergent version of Paige Krasikeva. For those who don’t remember, Paige was teenage Derek’s girlfriend who was scratched by an alpha and Derek had to kill himself. In my version, Derek thinks he killed her but Peter brought her back to life and sent her off with her parents who moved. Now she’s back in season 3A as an adult music teacher at the high school with no memories of Derek or werewolves.

What if? S2E8

I don't usually enjoy anything 'period', but tbh this was barely that, so I wound up really liking it. And noooo, this has nothing to do with both my favorite MCU characters being in it! How dare you suggest such a thing?!

But OMG, Bucky *and* Loki?! Yay! And dammit they almost met and interacted. Twice! Such a missed opportunity.

Bucky didn't really get to do much though. He was there, he fought, he snarked a bit. The ep was 'TBC' so maybe he'll do more in the finale?

Loki though... oh man. I wonder if they even needed to pay Tom Hiddleston for this? Or give him any lines? This seems literally made for him. He stole every scene he was in, just so funny. 'Oh bless'.

Loki as an actor makes so much sense as well. He was nowhere near a villain in this (not a hero either), just a guy doing his thing. So obviously Hela was queen and not Odin, because we've clearly seen Odin would not have had the sense to send Loki to drama class.

I wonder if this is a conscious move now he's a tragic hero in the main MCU. If it is then it's interesting how Bucky's been featured this season.

Now we know there will be a S3, I have to wonder if Captain Carter will continue to feature this prominently. I can understand people liking Peggy, and the idea was fun for an ep or two, but we've seen her a lot, even in live action. Why?! I think I'd like her more if she was allowed to be her own character, but it all keeps being about Steve in the end.

S3 Is Billy’s Superhero Origin Story - Not The END Of His Story

If you’ve been following my meta, you’ll know I’m in the middle of a discussion of Billy as the mythological “god-king” who dies and lives again. Well, in my next post, I was going to compare him to the three brother-gods of Greek mythology (Zeus, Poseidon, Hades). However, I need to bring up an important point first.

Stranger Things has already raised Billy to “god” status. 

The show is about superheroes - El, Kali, and others like them - facing off against the forces of evil. And superheroes are often modern-day gods with god-like powers. A few are lifted directly from ancient mythology (Thor, Loki, etc). Sometimes, if they aren’t full-fledged gods, they have gods for parents, making them demigods (such as Wonder Woman, who’s the daughter of Zeus in the recent movies).

In S3, Billy becomes a superhero. By becoming a superhero, he becomes a demigod. And, as I’ll explain, the Duffers have already tied that to his resurrection.

When we look up “demigod,” Google comes back with this:

a being with partial or lesser divine status, such as a minor deity, the offspring of a god and a mortal, or a mortal raised to divine rank.

If we look up lists of demigods in mythology, we get some interesting results, like the Greco-Roman Hercules. Hercules was known for his incredible strength (!!), as well for performing The Twelve Labors of Hercules. Among these are slaying the Nine-Headed Hydra and the Nemean Lion.

Oh look it’s Hercules vs. the Hydra/Lion. I’d say Lion because killing it was the first labor of Hercules. Also the Mind Flayer doesn’t have nine symbolic heads yet, that’s probably coming in a future season

Because of his association with the Nemean Lion, Hercules is often depicted in ancient art as wearing a lion skin:

In Roman works of art and in Renaissance and post-Renaissance art, Hercules can be identified by his attributes, the lion skin and the gnarled club (his favorite weapon); in mosaic he is shown tanned bronze...

Gosh. Where have I seen that before?

Damn. A quick Google search about demigods, and we’re already knocking on Billy’s door. I haven’t even talked about him as a superhero yet ;_;

Like I said in the intro, superheroes often embody the “demigod” archetype. They’re gifted with powers that put them a cut above the average human. Some even have explicitly divine origins. This gives them a striking similarity to the demigods of old myths, such as Perseus, Achilles, and our favorite lion-killer, Hercules.

Isn’t it weird how Billy looks like Perseus and Achilles and Hercules though

Peter Parker gets bitten by a radioactive spider and becomes Spiderman. Eddie Brock is possessed by an alien symbiote and becomes Venom. Billy Hargrove is possessed by an interdimensional monster and becomes... well, Billy Hargrove, but with the added bonuses of superstrength and super-healing.

One article I read has a line about Eddie Brock in The Amazing Spider-Man (1988) that I find especially eerie:

In the first scene of S3 Ep 4, Max and El are hanging out in Max’s room. Max shows El two comic books and asks, “Which one?” 

I don’t know about you, but that bit always gave me a weird vibe. It’s just one of those things that seems... purposeful... like it has a hidden meaning. So, following my instincts, I took a closer look at the scene.

Look at the comic books.

On one side, we have Wonder Woman. On the other side, we have the Green Lantern. Framed this way, they’re presented to us as dueling opposites. or a superhero dream team, but that’s for future seasons

Wonder Woman is El. The scene tells us this by having El ask about her. She’s drawn to her, sees herself in her.

The Green Lantern is Billy. In S3, he’s the opposing force to El’s Wonder Woman. Also, Green Lanterns draw their power from the aid of magic rings.

Huh. Interesting.

If you need more evidence, just juxtapose the comic book shot with this shot from Heather’s house:

Would you look at that. Max is in the middle, with Wonder Woman El on the left and the Green Lantern Billy on the right.

Furthermore, the Heather’s house shot happens at the end of Ep 3. In the very first scene of the next episode, we get the comic book shot. The juxtaposition in time suggests they’re linked.

Not only is Billy a superhero on par with El, he’s also coming back to kick ass. S3 was his origin story, not the end of it. The Duffers are telling us so.

The death and resurrection plotline shouldn’t surprise us. Superheroes die and come back all the time. Just check out this list of superheroes who have done exactly that. Batman, Captain America, Spiderman, Superman... seriously, it’s old hat by now. (The list notably includes Jean Grey, who I consider El’s X-Men alter ego. Kinda makes me think she’s gonna die and rise again too)

It makes sense that superheroes can cheat death. Like I explained, superheroes are basically demigods - humans who are more than human. 

What better way to show you’re more than human... than to beat the one enemy common to all humans everywhere?

Scrapbook 2021 | Part II

For anyone that’s new to this, this is how I keep track of all of the things I enjoy and/or create throughout the year. I have literally been doing this since I had a livejournal. I think the first one was 2011? Maybe? In which case, woohoo, ten years of scrapbooking!

It’s a nice little snippet of my life and helps to organize my brain.

Hi all! I’m on the hunt for some new partners (not replacing anyone of course) that are interested in angsty, romantic and, of course, dramatic plots. Aside from that though, I am 25 which means all of my partners NEED to be 18+. Also, another lil request if possible: I just moved to the PST and would love some partners over here or who are at least awake during these hours, not a requirement tho!

We can discuss rules, limits and triggers privately if we decide to move forward. Also, when it comes to ooc chatter I don’t mind fangirling or general chit chat, but what does bother me is holding conversations for days on end with no replies or no mention of replies. I find making friends through roleplay a bit awkward so if it happens organically I’m here for it, but I don’t want it to be forced. I hope that doesn’t make me sound harsh.

Right now I’m specifically on the hunt for four fandoms/pairings: Criminal Minds, Stranger Things, MCU & Teen Wolf.

In CM I’d be looking for someone to play Spencer Reid opposite of my character, Olivia Chandler. Olivia is a Gale Weathers type if you know Scream at all, but FAR less of a bitch. I think there’s a lot of longevity for this pair as Olivia is afraid of commitment whereas I see Spencer just hesitant when it comes to romance at all, especially if we set this after Maeve. There’s a lot to her backstory that I think could make for an interesting twist a little further along, but we could do different cases and such and it would be fun!

While I haven’t watched S4 of ST yet (atp I’m just waiting for S5 to rewatch all of it lol), I know most of what happens, but this plot would take place more of s2-s3 and maybe in an AU space s4. I’d be playing an original character, Nancy and Mike’s troubled cousin from New York, and would want to pair her alongside Billy Hargrove. I think they’re ‘fuck this small town’ attitudes would work well along with other things.

In the MCU I’m looking for someone to play as Loki. Don’t fret if you’re not completely caught up on the more recent marvel projects, as the plot(s) I’m looking for would take place preferably pre-Thor. Pre-thor would be lighthearted until we potentially see Loki discover his true heritage and what that means. What does it mean to him? What does it mean to a girl he’s grown up with (my character)? What does it mean to those around him? Themes like that! I’m totally open to other ideas as well and will definitely send you info on my oc when we connect, but this is the basic plot I have in my head rn!

As for Teen Wolf, I’d love for someone to play Derek Hale against my canon-divergent version of Paige Krasikeva. For those who don’t remember, Paige was teenage Derek’s girlfriend who was scratched by an alpha and Derek had to kill himself. In my version, Derek thinks he killed her but Peter brought her back to life and sent her off with her parents who moved. Now she’s back in season 3A as an adult music teacher at the high school with no memories of Derek or werewolves.
