Deep breath.
I am a solidly middle-aged fangirl, and my last real fan community before OFMD was the X-Files. (I feel like I am not the only one here who fits that description).
The news that we aren’t getting a new season of Our Flag Means Death is hitting me harder than I expected.
So I am thinking about Scully.
There’s this X-Files episode called “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose.” The plot is about a guy who can see into the future and tell people how they die.
Scully asks him, "How do I die?"
And Clyde Bruckman replies, simply, "You don't."
I've seen fans speculate that Scully winds up becoming immortal by the end of the series. But, 22 years after the end of the show's original run, that line has taken on a new meaning for me.
Scully doesn't die, she can't die, because I still think about her. Scully is immortal because there are fans still writing her into stories, still making art, still getting inspired by her and pursuing medicine and science.
You cannot truly kill a story. You can cancel a TV show. You can, if you're an asshole, make fun of fan creators and their ideas. If you're really an asshole (and a media conglomerate), you can send them cease and desist letters and tell them to stop making art that breathes new life into that story. But the story will not die.
I draw a lot of hope from the long, long history of fandom. The people who loved stories enough to keep them alive, even when it wasn't clear that there would ever be another "official" work in their lifetimes. The Sherlock Holmes fans. The Star Trek fans.
How does a story die?
It doesn’t.

If you would actually like to know, and are not just brushing off years of harassment:
here you go, go into the quote tweets of this thread. you will need to be logged into bsky.
some highlights. going to post with names removed so that if these folks later delete their comments it can't be traced back. but all sources are directly in the quote tweets of that thread. each image is a separate person.

Just something I've noticed being new to the fandom. The canyon claims they experience intense harassment from antis, and non-canyon OFMD fans will tell you it's the canyon that does the harassment. Nothing really unusual about that, right, most fandom divides have both sides accusing the other of being harassers.
But as I've gotten to know this fandom something I've noticed very consistently is that when someone in the main fandom talks about being harassed by the canyon, if you ask them for examples, the examples will things like "I kept getting transphobic anon messages saying I don't deserve to transition because i don't have enough sympathy for Izzy." or "I posted a piece of fanart that didn't have Izzy in it and people yelled at me for days about how it was hateful and exclusionary to leave him out when they thought it would make sense for him to be there" or "I wrote meta about how I thought it made sense that Izzy was paralleled with Ed's abusive dad and people screamed at me until I deleted the post."
Conversely when someone in the canyon talks about how they've been harassed for being an Izzy fan the example is almost always:
Some people I don't know have me blocked and I assume it's because I'm an Izzy fan
Some OFMD fans at a con seemed to not want to hang out with me once they realized I was an Izzy fan
I got some mild general anon hate on Tumblr that said I'm problematic for defending a problematic character
I saw some meta about Izzy that I didn't like in the tag
I saw someone saying they don't like the canyon
I have to say this seems like a very clear consistent pattern and, I'm sorry, I don't think these two things are equal and opposite. People are allowed to not want to talk to you?

@scarrletmoon I understand the fear that you're expressing here. I'm a poc in this fandom and I feel weird as shit bringing it up sometimes. I turned off anons real fucking fast for a lot of reasons, not the least of which was how vitriolic people got. It's a legitimate fear.
However, Atticus cannot be the scapegoat for issues that are endemic to the fandom. I think that you're jumping to a conclusion here.
The solution isn't to police identities.
The solution is for us to stop looking at whether or not someone is maindom or canyon or whatever the fuck, and start standing against ANY rhetoric that justifies doing harm to a group of people.
There is literally nothing in the larger ofmd fandom discourse that justifies harm. Not liking Izzy, not liking GB, not writing whatever fic you want to write. But there has been a culture that was ripe for Atticus to use social justice language in a way that justified sending harassment to people within the fandom—after all, they're racist, so they deserve it, right?
The whole fandom—the WHOLE fandom—needs to grapple with how we've allowed race to become a cudgel in fandom wars.
We need to grapple with the way that actual fans of color are consistently passed over and ignored until it becomes convenient to say, "Oh, look at this person's fic, support black authors!" rather than do a single thing to change how poc are treated—as either a weapon or an inconvenience, rather than a vital part of this fandom.
Also, people have been throwing up flags about how harmful this behavior is for years, not just about pccp.
When ofmdsalt says that this is a larger problem, it's not fair to jump to, "So you want us to question every poc's identity?" Nothing about their post implied that.
ofmdsalt, in all likelihood, is begging the fandom to finally address these long-standing cultural issues which allowed so much damage to be done.
Honestly seeing this all go down and the really disproportionate and how they're trying to change the narrative shows how much this fandom doesn't understand the severity of digital blackface and how much genuine harm Atticus did.
like i truly do not think we will ever truly grasp the harm or lasting impact of PCCP's actions. of pretending to be a black person (and allegedly pretending to be a first gen Ethiopian jewish man) in this fandom while acting as a source of information on how to make fandom spaces safer for black people while doing essentially the opposite of that.
how many people saw him as a credible source of information?
how many people took ADVICE FROM HIM on how to depict characters of colour in fanworks?
how many people went to him so he could act as a sensitivity reader for their fics?
there is an air about this issue that wants to make this seem like it's an isolated incident which downplays the severity of his influence in this fandom. he was just one person. he was an asshole. but the environment that has been created in this fandom enabled him. so while he is used as a scapegoat for the less savoury parts of this fandom, since he's deleted all his blogs, the damage has already been done and it'll take MONTHS to truly understand the impact of someone with his reach and influence

I think it’s lovely that OFMD lives on even though it’s stopped running. There’s so many cash grab shows that stream for 100 seasons that no one is passionate about but with this show, even when the plug is pulled, the fandom is just as lively and impassioned as it always was. There’s still so much to appreciate and interpret and incorporate into art and writing. I’m very thankful for this show and the fandom that loves it so unabashedly.

Battle of the Captains
Round 3 Part 4 Poll 2

Propaganda
Ed's a master tactician! He's a terrible flirt! He's got the eyes, the beard, the fit, and the sexy lil voice! Tummy and arm! He's gay and has daddy issues! What more could you want from a man???
Jonny's the self-proclaimed captain of the starship Aurora (though everyone else calls him the first mate), and one of the lead singers in The Mechanisms, a spacefaring cabaret of immortal pirates with lovely voices and extremely gray morals. He hails from New Texas, he's got a heart made of metal, and he likes to play the harmonica and shoot things.

Easily one of my favorite trends in this fandom is "hey what are Ed and Stede up to?" Whether they're sick or upset or just need a little extra pep to keep them going, people can just come on here and ask everyone "what are Ed and Stede doing right now?" And get a bunch of other people eager to tell them what their own little Ed's and Stede's in their minds are doing right now. I don't think I've ever seen a trend like this in any other fandom and it makes me so happy whenever I see it
#it reminds me of the grandpa in Princess Bride sitting down to tell the kid a story#but the grandpa is actually like 10 people ranging between 20 and 50 years old#2pm in the morning#ofmd#happy post#ofmd fandom
