Name: Stork
Debut: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
Everyone knows the stork! The stork is where babies come from! It’s where you came from, it’s where I came from! When any creature wants a baby and wishes hard enough, the stork will appear when the time is right to deliver the little bundle unto their doorstep. The big question, then, is where do the baby storks come from? That’s easy, actually! Storks reproduce sexually. From a cloaca.
Stork is really, truly, one of the most overlooked Mario characters, if not the most overlooked of all! Obviously there are far more obscure and unknown characters, but Stork is a key figure in the backstory of the Mario Bros., and is relegated to Yoshi’s Island-related content, barely ever referenced outside of it! I guess it makes sense since it is so tied to the Baby concept, but they use baby characters all the time, and Mario is pretty tied to the Baby concept, having been one of them. So basically what I am saying is, Stork Mario Kart Please!
Tumblr media
The Stork is a humble Stork, delivering babies as they do in real life. But this particular stork has the honor of delivering Mario and Luigi! Unfortunately, storks cannot see the future, so they do not know how important these babies will grow up to be. Kamek, however, CAN see the future, and he does not like what he sees!
Tumblr media
Geez! It wasn’t enough to steal infants, Kamek also had to take the Stork as a hostage! This poor guy was just doing his job. And after he is freed, he gets right back on it, too! He is serious about his work, and it is very respectable!
Tumblr media
He then brings the babies to the wrong house, and yes this is a very stupid Yoshi’s New Island plot point, but this isn’t Stork’s fault. Stork just spent days hanging upside down. Too selfless to take a break to recuperate! Perhaps it was irresponsible to take on the responsibility of baby-toting so soon after being tortured, but again, all of his blood had been pooling in his brain for days. I think he was just trying his best.
Tumblr media
Stork then goes on to get attacked by Kamek and blah blah the same dang plot as the first game but look at this! This is Where Babies Come From! Do you remember when you were forming like a little meat raindrop within Stork Cloud? How precocious of you! This should be Stork’s home track when he gets into Mario Kart. Drive around inside and see all the babies at various stages of development! I wonder at what point they grow their hats.
Tumblr media
Yoshi’s Island DS, though it came out before New Island, takes place after, and thank goodness our friend Stork is not violently attacked this time! He gets to appear as an ally, letting Yoshi swap between babies to use their special Baby Abilities, at the Stork Stop. A whole physical structure specifically for storks to deliver babies! For parents on the go. A Shy Guy could go up to this and say “Hi, one baby please” into the intercom and then it is a Shy Parent!
Tumblr media
Isn’t it nice to see Stork just Hanging Out for once? Just part of the gang. And he is helping! Really an upstanding stork.
Tumblr media
Stork (character) is based on Stork (animal)! These are large, stork-like birds in the stork family. So stork-like, because they are storks! Nothing could be more stork-like! I feel like storks are ONLY known from the idea of them delivering babies, and that is a shame, because they are real creatures and should be appreciated! So, I would like to dedicate the rest of this post to the real white stork, and fun facts about them!
-Storks are predators, and hunt a MASSIVE variety of prey!
-Juveniles have black bills, and as they mature, their bills turn red starting at the base and progressing toward the tip!
-Storks migrate yearly all the way from Europe to South Africa!
-Storks nest in groups of up to thousands in the winter, and preen each other to maintain social bonds!
-Young storks can make various vocalizations, but the main sound made by adults is bill-clattering, which sounds like a machine gun!
-Storks communicate with an “up-down display”, where they throw back their head and neck, and slowly bring them back upward!
-Storks build massive nests, which can weigh over 500 pounds, and which other, smaller birds will also take shelter in!
And, my favorite:
-Storks have been observed using tools! Parents may hold wet moss in their bill, and squeeze the water into the mouths of their chicks!
Please, never take any animal for granted! Every animal, and I mean literally every animal no with no exceptions, is wonderful and fascinating and deserves appreciation. And every animal is always weirder and even more interesting than you think! Every creature in the world is so full of wonder!

Bowser Jr's Origin Hypothesis And Stork Haven
In Yoshi's New Island it is established that babies excluding Yoshies, and Piranha Plants are delivered from a land that storks pick them up from. It's also established that parents have to want children in order for them to be made, and eventually delivered by the storks.
So some form of magic is at play, and since it's everyone the closest kind that fits the bill is wish magic. This also answers the question that one interviewer had about Toad reproduction, they don't. The only thing that really doesn't come from the storks is Yoshi's and Piranha Plants. I'm mostly thinking of Peewee and Dino Piranha. Bowser is delivered by storks so even Koopas which hatch from eggs are delivered. It's possible they are delivered as eggs.
This also can create an explanation for Bowser Jr. If all Bowser needed was wish magic he wouldn't need a partner. The only problem is that as established in Super Mario RPG, Bowser is essentially blacklisted from having his wishes granted. That being said I'm pretty sure the sneaky King of the Koopas could have found a way around that, he is always messing around with stars. Or alternatively there is another possible way.
In Paper Mario 64 Bowser gets a hold of the Star Rod which gave Paper Bowser access to such magic. So it is possible that when he had the Star Rod he wished for a son who would eventually be delivered even after he lost the Star Rod.

Fun Fact: Yoshi’s Island actually first hinted at Mario and Luigi having a special telepathic twin bond even when they were just babies and now they’re finally bringing that ability they have back in Brothership. I’m totally normal about this btw and am totally not frothing at the mouth in joy or anything.
Heheheh. Oh, I am aware.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A part of me thought that ability might have faded/changed as they got older, but nope! Still a canon ability they have and I, too, am very normal about that!

Fact: The Koopa Kingdom is Bowser’s homeland and the greater location of Bowser’s Castle.
While the Koopa Kingdom is most well known for its rocky terrain, volcanoes and lakes of lava, it has also been shown to feature other environments, such as dead tree forests and plains.

The 2014 Japanese commercials for Yoshi's New Island featured a version of the game's main theme with lyrics. Since there were two different commercials, two versions with the same musical backing track, but different lyrics exist, both of which are included in this post.

Hello, my dear parasocial friends! Today I appear to be locked up in a medieval torture dungeon. Silly me! Just another Tuesday, am I right! No need to worry, though, I can simply use my Telepathic Ability to transmit today’s post to the internet even from way over here! Now, let’s get st-
...Hello?
Is someone there?
"You know what I want.”
I’m sorry! I really don’t! I don’t have any idea what I’m doing here!
“You’ll remain here indefinitely until you make a post about my favorite Mario character.”
Is that all? You could have just asked... what character might this be?
“Hold on, I have a picture of him here in my heart locket...”
Okay, no problem, let’s see who-
Oh.
Oh dear.
You’re vile! Sick! I’ll make this post. I’ll make it right now, so I can get away from your wretched clutches as soon as possible!

Name: Mr. Pipe
Debut: Yoshi’s New Island
Geez. Let’s get this over with. Mr. Pipe, huh.
Tumblr media
Sometimes, in Yoshi’s New Island, there will be a Pipe. Various things can come out of this pipe! Wings, eggs, and coins! All sorts of things.
Tumblr media
The pipe lives! It reveals its eyes and shoes, and runs away. This is Mr. Pipe! Look at those eyes just sliding around a flat-looking graphic like some kind of object show. This is all Mr. Pipe does. If only he said anything. Then we could tell him to pipe down! But if he said something, that would spoil the surprise...
Tumblr media
Mr. Pipe is Mario! For some reason. Mario traveled back in time to help Yoshi and his baby self, but exclusively in a weird and indirect way. Did he think this particular adventure was too difficult for them? Why can’t they know it was him? Why just give some coins sometimes? If you’re going to go through all the trouble to travel back in time, this almost seems worse than doing nothing at all! Would he have caused a paradox if he was too obvious?
Tumblr media
I sure don’t think so, since this is the very game were suddenly, warping through space and time, King Bowser appears! And Bowser isn’t dressed as a pipe. That sure would have been funny, though! Bowser wearing a REALLY big pipe, with his blatantly Bowser feet and tail sticking out underneath, pretending to be Mr. Pipe, Yoshi’s most stalwart of allies. He could get up to such mischief! Like... giving Yoshi even fewer coins! That would be dastardly.
Tumblr media
Mr. Pipe’s face is really funny, I think. Those ARE Mario’s eyes, but they are so much closer together than usual! And of course, no nose between them. Where did it go? At least there we can assume it’s pressed up against the costume. It jiggles so much in Odyssey, it doesn’t seem to have much rigid cartilage at all! It’s like a boob. (Please pay no mind to when his skeleton is shown with a nose)
Hm. I guess Mr. Pipe is pretty funny after all. Really stupid, don’t get me wrong! SO stupid. Sheesh. But that makes him so wacky and funny! Dare I say, I’m glad Mr. Pipe exists.
“Acceptable. You may go.”
Oh, thank goodness! Thank you! Please do not do this again.
“But before you go... aren’t you curious who was behind all this?”
I suppose I am, now that you mention it!
“Allow me to turn on the light...”
WOW! I can’t believe it! All along, it was

Goombas Are Traitors But When Did They Switch Sides?
So we all should know this by now, the Goombas are traitors to the Mushroom Kingdom. It's mentioned in Super Mario Bros. Manual, the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia brings it up, and even games like Super Princess Peach mention it when describing Goombas in the Glossary. But here's a question I have, when?
Now while many would think it was probably in Bowser's first big invasion in SMB. You even have dialogue in Super Princess Peach about a Goomba having lived in the Mushroom Kingdom. In the Exhibition Records of Mario Superstar Baseball it mentions Goombas sided with Bowser. So it seems like it's an open and shut case right?
Wellllll……. The thing is, in games that take place in the past you face you can find Goombas that seem to be part of the Koopa army. But one could argue the Goombas we see in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's New Island are just wild Goombas, there is one more appearance that throws a major monkey wrench into all this. In Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time when in Baby Bowser's Castle you can encounter Goombas. Meaning Goomba were already part of the Koopa army this far back. It seems like there is a contradiction here.
Edit See the image below for the point @dojaymi makes that could solve this.

Marggy Childhood Friends AU
So I finally came up with enough details to make a proper au out of my icon pic.
To begin at the beginning, Meggy ends up as one of the hundreds of babies that present-day Bowser and Kamek kidnapped while looking for the Star Children in Yoshi's Island DS. And, despite not being one of the Star Children (because I didn't change the lineup), she manages to be an extra sixth escaped yoshi-riding baby because she's Meggy. Of course, she's a tiny gooey baby squid the whole time but she's already got that Spletzer Family Ink Production so she can still shoot at her enemies. Also she's in a little bucket the whole time and it's both funny and adorable.
Anyway, after all that she's brought back home to her parents by one of the storks, and you wouldn't think anything would come of that but a few months later her dad gets a massive business opportunity in the Mushroom Kingdom and they move to Toad Town right next door to the Mario family, and she turns out to get along so well with their twin baby boys you'd almost think they already knew each other from somewhere.
From then on the three of them are practically joined at the hip (though it obviously takes a few years for Meggy to actually have hips), to the point where you'd think they were triplets instead of twins and a close friend. The Bros are even there on that fateful day when Meggy saw One-Shot Wren in person and fell in love with Turf War.
And then they're fourteen, and the Great Mushroom War is starting up, and the Marios are moving to Brooklyn because they remember the Shroob invasion and they just know their boys are going to get caught up in this if they stay, and the Spletzers are going back to Inkopolis both for that same reason and so Meggy can pursue her Inksports Career. The three of them stay in touch afterwards and meet up as much as they can, of course, but it just isn't the same.
And then, years later, when they're in their 20's and the Bros are getting their new plumbing business off the ground and Meggy's scouting for a profreshional Splatoon, they find out that Bowser and Peach's parents are dead, and Bowser's kidnapped Peach and is turning Toads into bricks, and, completely separately, they drop everything and go back to the Mushroom Kingdom, because Peach is their friend and that's their home. They run into each-other in the first fortress and it's like they were never apart.
Anyway, after they beat Bowser they decide to actually move back to the Kingdom together and become Peach's semi-official bodyguards in case Bowser tries something again, because he was kinda-sorta their friend too back then and they know how stubborn he can be. Thankfully they're not giving up on their dreams, since Mario Bros Plumbing is still new enough that they can set it up pretty much anywhere and Inkopolis Plaza is just a pipe away.
And from there we get "The Mario Series But Meggy Is Also There," up until the end of Super Mario 64 when the pods drop, where it's now "SMG4 Except The Game Adaptations Happen In Order And Are Somewhat More Accurate And There's A Lot More Of Them (And Meggy's There From The Start)." Also, the canon Splatoon plotlines happen, but Meggy doesn't actually get involved in this AU so it's just background flavor.
As you can imagine Meggy being around so much earlier has significant consequences, the big one being that since she's around to be a good influence Mario stops being a complete jerkass waaaayyyy sooner, which keeps his relationships with Peach and... really everyone besides Luigi from falling apart. Except Toad. The vast majority of Toad's issues have surprisingly little to do with classic era Mario.
(Of course, this presents a bit of a problem since I still want to do at least a version of the Anime Arc so Meggy can get her transformation trauma, but this version of Peach wouldn't do That and the greater adherence to Mario Canon means Francis still lives in the Bitlands and has completely the wrong personality for leading a crime syndicate.)
