In New Super Mario Bros., no shells can normally be taken into the Mummipokey boss battle arena.
If glitches or cheats are used to throw a shell at Mummipokey, an interesting property is revealed whereby the shell will count every frame of touching the boss as defeating an enemy, resulting in an immense amount of extra lives being granted. Mummipokey itself remains unharmed by it, however.
