~~~~~
Ruby stared at Musnia from the deck of Dependence. Her hair blew in the sea breeze as she watched the people on the docks. She noticed that there were many passengers that were meeting up with people on land. Lots of hugs and kisses were happening. It frustrated Ruby. And what frustrated Ruby more was that she was frustrated about it. Then she realized she was just sad and lonely, and that she wanted to go home.
She sighed and shrugged on one of her bags. She walked towards the ramp to wait in line to disembark off of the ship. What did she need to do? Get a place to stay, find the next ship out of here and buy boarding, find a bookstore and buy more books, eat, sleep, get the hell out of here. Ruby was pretty sure the next island was Tamcier.
“Make sure you always know what your next step is,” Law said seriously. “You need a plan, and a backup plan, and a backup plan for the backup plan.”
Ruby groaned. “Laaaaaaw.”
“No. I’m not budging on this. Your life is at stake. You’re starting at Musnia and then?”
“Tamcier. Can we talk about anything else? It’s bedtime and I would rather cuddle.” Law sighed with a frown. Ruby wrapped her arms around him and kissed his chin. “Come to bed, mo chuisle.”
Ruby sighed dramatically. She should’ve cuddled Law more.
“You’re acting far too pathetic for someone who’s as strong as you are.” She heard a voice from behind her.
She turned and gave Duhni an annoyed look. “Thought you said you’d leave me alone.”
“I actually never said that. I said that I wouldn’t spill the beans on who you are. Didn’t say I wouldn’t annoy you.”
“Of course. How could I be so stupid?” Ruby turned back around and started to walk down the ramp, Duhni following after her.
“Where are you headed next?”
“Somewhere to stay. I’m sure there’s an inn or a hotel or something nearby for people who jump ships often.”
“I see.”
“What about you?”
“A place to live. I need an apartment. Then I’m headed to the local authorities to get a job. I’ll be able to help people that way.”
Ruby’s lips twitched into a ghost of a smile. “I see.” She sighed when she stepped onto the docks. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She let it out slowly and opened her eyes. Time to move on.
She took a step forward, eyes already scanning the docks for the dock master, when she heard a scream. Her head shot towards the noise and saw pirates. She groaned. Well, Duhni did say that there was trouble on this island.
“Dammit,” she heard Duhni mutter under his breath. “Not even on land for five minutes.” He looked over at Ruby. “Do you mind?” He said as he shoved his duffle bag into her arms before running towards the pirates.
“Hey!” She yelled after him. She huffed, annoyed. “Come on,” she complained. “I’m not your goddamn bag holder.”
She watched Duhni rush over to the pirates and start yelling at them. She frowned. A crippled, old marine would probably have trouble with a group of pirates just by himself. She knew that there were older marines that were still strong but she highly doubted Duhni was one of them.
She watched him punch out one of the pirates, impressed that the pirate immediately fell to the ground unconscious and with a bloody nose. Of course, the pirates started to crowd around him with weapons drawn. They hit him in the head with the hilt of a sword, blood falling from his forehead down his cheek. She sighed. Well…it really wasn’t her problem. She had places to be and books to buy.
She stared at Duhni before groaning. “Oh, fuck it all.” She rushed over to Duhni and the pirates. “Are you assholes really going to gang up on an old man?” She questioned while still holding all of her luggage and Duhni’s bag.
“I’ve got it covered,” Duhni said, which sounded more like a groan.
“Uh-huh, whatever.” Ruby said and walked up to the pirates. “I’ve got shit to do so I’m going to take care of this quickly.”
“And who the fuck are you?”
“Why in the hell would I tell some nobody pirate that?” She set down all the luggage and flicked her wrist. “Like I said, I’ve got shit to do so…” vines wrapped around the group’s bodies holding them in place. “Would you guys do me a favor and not bother anyone anymore?”
“Fuck you!”
“Alright.” She squeezed her hand into a fist, making the vines squeeze around the pirates. The pirates cried out in pain and turned blue in the face until they all passed out. By that time the local authorities arrived and surrounded everyone, including her and Duhni. “See? This is what happens when you get involved in this shit.” She looked at Duhni, who was wiping the blood off of his face with a handkerchief.
“Yet you still helped.”
Ruby huffed. She stared at the authorities surrounding her. One man stepped forward and looked over her and Duhni
“Who are you two?”
Ruby didn’t answer but Duhni spoke up.
“My name is Duhni,” he said and placed his blood stained handkerchief in his pocket. “I’m here to join your fight against pirates and bandits.”
“You?” The man looked Duhni up and down. He sighed. “Well, I certainly won’t turn down the help.” He looked at Ruby. “And you?”
“Don’t worry about it.”
“You don’t want us to worry about a strange woman who has devil fruit powers? Funny.”
“Listen, I’m just here until I can get a ship to Tamcier. I’m not here to start trouble or get into fights or whatever the hell you think I’m trying to do.” She picked up Duhni’s bag and shoved it into his arms. She followed by picking up all of her luggage. She took a step forward and the man stepped in front of her. “Do you mind?”
He looked into her eyes seriously. Ruby’s gaze hardened. This is exactly what Law was worried about happening. He’d be having a cow if he knew what was going on.
“She’s telling the truth,” Duhni spoke up. “She’s just trying to find a new home after she lost her husband.”
The man in front of her looked over at Duhni and then to Ruby’s luggage. His gaze landed on the ring on the chain that was around her neck. Ruby swallowed. The man sighed forcefully. “Fine. Whatever you say. Just get out of here.”
Ruby scoffed but stomped past him. What a kind way to thank her for dealing with those pirates. Ungrateful assholes.
“Elissa!” Ruby heard Duhni call after her. Ruby looked back and raised her brow at him. “Good luck.”
Ruby’s face relaxed and she settled into a small smile. She nodded her head before walking off. Now she had to figure out where she was going next.
She looked around for the dock master for long minutes, growing frustrated that they were so hard to find. She groaned. She just needed to buy her next trip. Why was this so damn difficult?
“Excuse me?” She heard a child say. She ignored it and stared hopelessly at the docks. “Miss? Ma’am? Milady?”
Ruby turned to the voice and saw the voice was talking to her. Ruby blinked down at the child. They were probably around 10 or 11. “Can I help you?”
“I was going to ask you that!” They laughed.
“What?”
“I’m the dock master!” Ruby stared at the child in shock as they laughed. Suddenly someone kicked them in the rear. “Ow!”
“Enough, Saban,” a grumpy man said. “I’m the dock master.”
“Well you weren’t doing your job!” Saban said. “This lady couldn’t find you and she’s been looking for 10 minutes!”
The dock master looked at Ruby. He looked at her before grabbing her hand and kissing it. “Forgive me.”
Ruby scrunched her face up in disgust. Gross. She took her hand away and shook it. “Don’t worry about it. I just need to know where the next ship to Tamcier is so I can buy myself a trip.”
“It’s arriving tomorrow,” the man said immediately.
“You just know that off the top of your head?”
“Yes.”
“…alright.” Ruby sighed. “Then I guess that answers my question. I’ll have to come back tomorrow.” She adjusted her luggage thoughtfully.
“You have a lot of bags, lady!” Saban laughed. The dock master groaned.
“Yeah. I guess I do.” Ruby sighed. “Can one of you tell me where there’s somewhere…safe to stay?”
““Safe?”” The dock master questioned.
“Safe. Dry. Comfortable. Doesn’t have bed bugs. Nearby. Preferably all of the above.”
“You’ll probably do best at the Tipsy Hyacinth,” the dock master answered. “It’s a bit more…high class than the other inns near the docks but something tells me you’re fine with that.”
Based on the amount of taverns and inns Ruby had stayed in over the years that’s not all that impressive. She was suddenly missing that inn she had stayed at on that last island. The innkeeper was so sweet.
“Works for me. Where’s it at?”
“It’s-”
“I’ll take you!” Saban raised his hand with a grin. The dock master glared at him. “What? I’m not doing anything anyway, Jaal.”
Jaal groaned. He pinched between his eyes. “Fine. Just get back here before I make you do real work.”
“Okay!” Saban grinned and Ruby. “Let’s go! I’ll take you there quickly.”
Ruby briefly wondered if this was an elaborate ruse to steal her wallet and/or belongings. Luckily for her she was not ignorant to things like that so she would have no problem keeping her things safe.
She followed Saban quietly, not really listening as he rambled on. She was thinking about her next steps. After she booked a room she was thinking she would get an early lunch. She missed Clione’s cooking but she was sure she would be able to find some good food on the island. She would find a bookstore after that, she needed to stock up since she already went through the books she had brought. Maybe find some crossword puzzles or something similar as well.
“Why did you come to the island?” She heard Saban ask.
Ruby blinked out of her thoughts and stared at the boy. “I’m looking for a new island to stay. I lost my husband and I’m starting anew.”
“Oh. That’s sad.”
“Yes.”
“Why not stay here?” He asked innocently.
“It’s…” she trailed off before looking up at someone rushing up to them. “What?”
Saban sighed. “It’s the Nine Lives Bandits again.” He looked at the woman who was panting. “What happened, Tilly?”
“They went to The Roostery and demanded they be fed for free! They’re tearing up the place. I’m trying to find Tas but…”
“He was at the docks. There were pirates.”
“Pirates?! Two attacks in one day?!” Tilly exclaimed. “Oh, what are we going to do? These attacks keep getting worse.” She looked at Ruby and blinked. “Oh, I’m so sorry, you must be a visitor to the island! I hope you enjoy your stay!”
Ruby stared at her like she grew two heads. How am I supposed to enjoy myself when this place keeps having these issues?
“Uh, right,” Ruby smiled nervously. “I just need to get to the inn.” She looked at Saban and pointed in the direction they were walking. “Is it this way?”
Saban nodded. “Yes! It’s just up the road. Let’s go, Tilly, we can find Tas together!”
They both ran off without another word.
Ruby sighed. “Alright.” Well, at least nothing was stolen from her. She adjusted the tote on her shoulder and walked in the direction where the inn supposedly was. She walked up the cobblestone road, not really wanting to admit that it’s much easier to walk in sneakers.
She stopped when she noticed the inn coming up. It was…cute.
It was cute as hell.
The windows had flower boxes under them, there were vines growing up the side, the shudders looked like they had received a fresh coat of paint of a beautiful teal color. How absolutely adorable!
Ruby smiled and took a deep breath. She walked through the door of the inn, her luggage starting to become a little too heavy.
“Oh my!” She heard someone exclaim. “You look like you’re running away from something!” A flamboyant man greeted her. He had blonde hair and a curled pink mustache.
Ruby smiled nervously. “Something like that. Do you have a room available?”
“I believe I do!” He walked behind the counter and bent down. Ruby heard items being pushed around before he popped back up. “How long will you be staying?”
“Until the ship to Tamcier leaves.”
“Ah, well I believe that the ship will arrive tomorrow which means they'll probably ship off again in about three days. So we’ll say you’ll be here for four days.”
“Works for me.”
Ruby paid the man for the room, which was more expensive than the inn at the last island. She accepted the key and found her room. She sighed when she first looked into the room. How nice. Sheer curtains gently blew in the breeze from the open window. The comforter was a cream color with roses on it and there were plenty of matching pillows on the bed. There was an en suite bathroom. A nice sized dresser and matching nightstand. And finally, and most importantly, a safe. Ruby sighed in relief when she saw the safe. Now she didn’t have to worry as much about her money.
She set aside her luggage. She collapsed onto the bed. It was definitely more comfortable than the one she had on Dependence. She closed her eyes and breathed in. It was quiet, which was nice. It’s been over a week since she had some quiet. She was only mildly embarrassed when her stomach growled loudly in that quiet room.
“Ugh.” She sat up. “I need to eat something.” She rubbed her stomach.
She stretched with a groan. She quickly hid her more valuable belongings and stashed away most of her money in the safe. She closed the window and locked it. She closed the shutters and turned on the radio. She refused to lose anything before she got a job on Dressrosa.
She grabbed her purse with enough money for food and some books. She slipped her sneakers back on and left the room. As she walked through the inn she noticed the staff going about their duties. Getting ready for the dinner rush tonight and what looked like live entertainment. She was sure she wouldn’t get any sleep.
She walked out of the inn and started walking towards the center of town. Surely she would find somewhere to eat there. She quietly made her way through the streets, passing by different shops and stalls. She went through the plan in her head, making sure that she didn’t disrupt anything that Law had laid out for her.
She finally made it to what seemed like the town square when she noticed the local authorities from earlier. She sighed. Fantastic.
She started to look around the square for a restaurant when she noticed that there was actually some destruction to the building that the authorities were standing by.
Unfortunately, she was a snoop and busybody and curiosity may definitely kill the cat but she was much stronger than some cat anyway. She crept closer to the authorities and the crowd, noticing the thrown around tables and chairs, the destroyed umbrellas, and the broken front window.
The man who was suspicious of her was talking to an elderly man. The rest of the authorities seemed to be taking care of crowd control. She looked at the scene with a slight frown. The building had the title “The Roostery.” This was the restaurant that Tilly girl was talking about. Those bandits definitely tore the place up.
Ruby stared for a moment longer before turning on her heel. Her stomach was starting to cramp because she was hungry and she definitely wasn’t going to be getting lunch here.
“Se- Elissa!” She heard someone call her name.
Ruby turned around, confused, before rolling her eyes. “Duhni,” she said as he ran up to her. “I’m just here to find food. I’m not going to cause trouble.”
Duhni sighed when he walked up to her. “That’s not why I’m calling for you,” he said.
“Then why? I really need to get something to eat. I’m fucking starving.”
“You should help these people.” Ruby stared at him completely flabbergasted. She blinked a few times, not really knowing what to say. Duhni took her stunned silence as an opportunity. “You’re strong. You know how to fight. You can beat these bandits so that they never return and hurt these people again.”
“Isn’t that why you joined?” She found her voice.
“Yes, but I’m nothing compared to you. I’m a disgraced marine, you…” he frowned. “You could really do something here. Something good.”
Ruby almost scoffed. “Why should I? I have places to be. I don’t have time for this.”
“The ship won’t be leaving right away. You’ll have time on the island and it will keep you from being bored…” he gave her a hard look. “And it’s good to do nice things for people.”
Ruby did scoff that time. “Whatever.” She rolled her eyes and looked back to the destruction and the crying old man. Ugh. Her heart strings. She hated that she still had them. She groaned. “I’ll think about it. Right now I can’t think straight because I’m so damn hungry.”
“If you’re willing to help, I’ll buy.” A third person walked up to her. It was the man who was suspicious of her at the docks. “If you can do to these bandits what you did to those pirates, then I’ll buy more than one meal.”
Ruby sighed dramatically. “Alright! Alright! I’ll listen to what you have to say over lunch!” She huffed.
“My name is Tas,” the man said. “And you’re?”
“Elissa.” Ruby said simply.
“Elissa,” he tested out her name. “I see. Well, Elissa, let’s get you that lunch so we can discuss this whole situation.”
“Don’t you have to stay with your squad or whatever?”
“They know what to do. Duhni, your first job is to help out. Go to the deputy and get your orders.”
Duhni stood up straight and nodded. “Yes, sir!” He ran towards the squad. Ruby watched him nervously.
“Let’s go,” Tas said. “Don’t want to deny you your food any longer.”
Tas began to lead the way and Ruby followed blindly after. She was in complete shock with herself. What was she doing? Straying from the course? Doing good deeds? Helping people?! Oh god, if Law was here he’d be giving her the longest and most annoying lecture he could.
She sighed. Law told her to stay out of trouble and the first thing she did was get right in the middle of it. She was wanting to call him, maybe in the middle of the night when no one could hear her but now that she’s found trouble, there was no way she could get away with it.
Ruby took a deep breath and straightened her back as they approached the restaurant. First things first…
Get through lunch.
