Story Prompt 36
In a small town where everyone seemed to know everyone else's business, there lived an individual who had faced more than their fair share of challenges. Life had dealt them a series of blows that left deep scars on their soul, pushing them to the brink of despair.
One day, after a particularly harsh incident that crossed the line, our protagonist decided they had endured enough. The weight of sadness and frustration transformed into a burning desire for revenge. A plan started to take shape, fueled by the anger that had been simmering beneath the surface.
Our character began subtly gathering information about those who had wronged them. Late-night conversations in dimly lit corners, hushed whispers, and stolen glances became their routine. The town, oblivious to the brewing storm, continued with its usual pace.
As the days passed, the revenge plot unfolded. Our protagonist, shrouded in anonymity, started to subtly turn the tables on their tormentors. Practical jokes, harmless pranks, and clever schemes began to sow confusion among the group that had caused so much pain.
In the midst of the chaos, a curious thing happened. The protagonist discovered unexpected allies among those who had once stood on the sidelines, silently observing the injustice. A sense of camaraderie formed, and a new, supportive community began to emerge.
The revenge, instead of escalating into a destructive force, transformed into a catalyst for change. The town witnessed a shift in dynamics as people started questioning their actions and the consequences of their behavior.
One day, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the town, our protagonist found themselves at a crossroads. The original mission of revenge had evolved into something unexpected. The newfound connections, the support received, and the changed atmosphere made them reconsider their path.

I literally can't take it anymore. I need to get this out of my system. This is a hate-rant about why almost every single thing Tom Taylor has written is wrong.
First and foremost is the bimbofication of Dick Grayson. Tom Taylor loves to write him like this idiot who doesn't think at all. Being cheerful does not mean being dumb.
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) Issue #79
"You seem unusually contemplative"? All Dick does is contemplate!
Tumblr media
Nightwing (1996) Issue #3
His mind is always running!
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2011) Issue #13
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) Issue #38
I just picked a random issue from all of these comics and in every single one of these, Dick's planning, thinking, and strategising constantly.
Tom Taylor literally treats him like he's stupid or something.
Also the degradation of his abilities
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) Issue #79
A vigilante for 20 years. Who has faced assassins, hitmen, psychos, surprise attacks, metas, and you're telling me he didn't know that a untrained kid snuck up and stole from him?
He forgot who he was, he didn't forget where he lived! Even when he was Ric Grayson, Dick had procedural memory. His battle instincts stayed with him.
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) Issue #52
"Then...I didn't even know what I was doing. I took him down--took him apart in seconds."
This man is a vigilante machine when he was amnesic. Why the heck would Dick ever let his guard down?
His robin reference
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) Issue #92
Even Bruce in Batman: Hush has said it-Dick was the best. His skills were the best of anyone he's witnessed which is one of the reasons why Bruce let him be Robin in the first place.
This scene is so wrong that there's a robin scene that came out before this in direct opposition of this Tom Taylor Shitshow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Robin & Batman Issue #1
This was actually pre-robin. Bruce had him do a solo-trial run to see his skill before he made him Robin and this was the result. Compare that to Tom Taylor's scene and the result is humiliating. For Taylor.
Tom Taylor's version of trying to show that Dick loves the people comes off as him hating crime-fighting. RIP the whole Robin firing drama and Nightwing birth i guess.
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) Issue #79
"We could have avoided all of this if we'd just stayed in and eaten kibble."
Tumblr media
Nightwing (1996) Issue #3
Dick would rather die than stop crime-fighting. After Blockbuster's first attempt, his life was hanging on by a thread and he still continued crime fighting.
Tumblr media
Nightwing (1996) Issue #91
After Blockbuster blew up his apartment, this is the single-minded determination Dick had to continue crime-fighting. This is him at one of the worst lows of his life but he refused to give up but now? He has everything and Dick wants to ignore the murder of a child to stay inside and eat kibble which - what the heck? I know he's seen as a happy character but him finding dog-food desirable is too far!
Also the idiocy of which Tom Taylor had Barbara calling the cops in Bludhaven for a stolen wallet. Newsflash! This isn't her first rodeo here.
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) Issue #81
vs
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) Issue #24
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2011) Issue #23
Given how Dick's easily defeated enhanced metas and "very good" fighters, him falling down the stairs is a little to absolutely impossible to believe.
Another thing I love about Dick that Tom Taylor deciminates is his grace. Dick is the most graceful person in DC. His balance easily matches Selina's enhanced cat powers.
But yet. You have.
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) Issue #83
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2011) Issue #23
yeah. okay.
Taylor's motorbike scenes of Dick make me so mad. The boy is a pro at crazy. It's one of his best traits because he does the wildest stunts and he pulls it off.
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) Issue #93
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nightwing (1996) Issue #86
He lands on his feet. He grabbed a villain mid-air, crashed into a window, and was perfectly fine. Actually no, he's not fine because he's worried about his bike's paint job.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nightwing (2011) Issue #24
He just sailed over a whole crowd of people and started kicking butt like what he just did wasn't extraordinary - which for him is just another tuesday.
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) Issue #95
yeah, tell 'er Dick.
He doesn't need someone to hold his bike.
One of the worst things in Taylor's run is how Blockbuster went down. It suddenly reminded me of Selina's stupid ideology which is why I think I got so ticked off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) Issue #96
Blockbusters' thugs loyalty to him isn't a make it or break it deal. He's one of strongest criminal organisations and the knowledge that he owns one of the worst prisons that he could easily put his underlings into would've instilled fear into his thugs, not freedom. Furthermore Blockbuster takes good care of his people that don't piss him off. He teamed up with Nightwing in the scarecrow era in Nightwing (2016) because someone was messing with his people. He's extremely intelligent and superstrong, and he's not just going to be brought down by the knowledge that he owns a prison. It's Bludhaven. If he didn't, then there would be something suspicious given that he runs the city. It's the way Taylor dumbs down Bludhaven's villains that gets to me. Imagine him writing Batman (2016). It's like saying, "yeah the Joker was just a little misguided but he found the right way again after a stern talking to by Batman."
Nightwing is a big name.
When Dick first came to Bludhaven, one of the police officers was like we don't want your crazy here or something. Also Bludhaven loves Nightwing. They want him.
So why is everyone pretending like they don't know who he is?
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) Issue #90
The police, the citizens, the villains-all of them. Dick fought Brutale and beat the crap out of him way back in 1996 comic. He's a Bludhaven regular. Just because Dick forgot who he was doesn't mean anyone else forgot him. Amnesia doesn't work that way.
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) Issue #54
A whole team of Nightwings were formed during Dick's amnesic period because of how badly he was needed and missed. It's almost like the Tom Taylor run is set in an alternate universe.
I ran out of image space but what the absolute fiddlesticks is up with Dick being scared to jump. It better be a manipulation tactic but at this point I think Tom Taylor doesn't even know that Dick is manipulative.

Look all I'm saying is that if I were going to make a minecraft movie.
Well, first off I'd put down the first person to even reccomend we do it in cgi. Not just because it looks objectively terrible and half of the magic and nostalgia factor of minecraft is in its texture but holy shit budget much??? You are literally looking at a situation where the cheaper option is also objectively the better option. What the fuck are you doing
But I mean, after that.
Second off, all my writers must watch popular smps and minecraft roleplays/let's plays to understand the "magic" of the game. That's how we're studying for this, not the game books or whatever. Those guys are clearly doing smthn right, and as the executive/writer who knows very little about mineraft that I am in this hypothetical scenario, I need to do my best to make money. And that means learning what people like about the game and community.
Maybe even bring on some popular (non controversial please god) smp writers for consulting. They literally make minecraft movies as their fucking job, they are the expert u need to consult
Story wise, you NEED to choose if you wanna play this straight or silly. I'm so sick of movies trying to be all emotional and "ohh this world is so beautiful,, if u could only understand,, woaa" with their epic sound track and dramatic lighting, but then the dialogue being ripped out of a stupid marvel knockoff trying too hard to be witty
Anyways. Give me a generic "kid has a hard life and uses [thing] to escape it but then their parent trashes [thing] to teach them a "lesson"" movie.
The thing is minecraft and this kid is totally in love with letsplays and smps and has a server with their online friends (get a sponsorship from discord for that good good film sponsorship money, have them play while in call)
The mom or dad or maybe both trash the kids computer for some reason (bad grades maybe or one of those shitty "you need to talk to us more!!! That computer is killing ur brain!!! You don't love us as much as you should and it's that damn games fault!!!" But like it's actually just a kid being a normal fucking kid and having normal fucking kid hobbies things and the parents are dicks)
They delete the minecraft world rip
Them boom, kid somehow gets stuck in the game
Switch to NON CGI FILMING IN MINECRAFT. If you really need to add your stupid shitty fucking cgi then at least make it look like an ACTUAL MINECRAFT ANIMATION holy shit
It'll save us so much money too
So main plot is this kid, being trapped in minecraft, actually falling through different minecraft servers.
We can have different cameos from popular smps and youtubers, get some old youtubers and gameplay in here too. Get fucking dantdm and the diamond minecarts og series with the lab thing, it'll make the old fans lose their fucking MINDS.
The youtubers themselves don't even have to show up, just shove the kid into settings that are clear references to smps and letsplays. Have them wander through Aphmau's OG minecraft diaries sets or Sundee's lucky block series
The best part is that as backdrops, you don't even have to fully commit to "you'll only get this/find this interesting if you know these guys" bc if your writing is good enough you can still make people care by just. Introducing it correctly. Don't present it as "Aphmau's old minecraft diaries series world" go "oh wow look st this cool village,, woah I wonder who built this ,," And have them interact with NPCs organically
Meanwhile the parents go into the game after the kid to bring them back and we do this whole world hopping adventure where the parents learn that,, minecraft can be fun? Actually?
They find the kid and the kid is like "nooo I'm having too much fun the real world SUCKS!!!" but then we do that "it's cool to have fun and indulge but you still need to be present in the real world and do real people things too in order to have that fun responsibly" where somehow the kid realizes that moderation is good for u.
Maybe they almost die in game fr fr? Every world they enter has its difficulty upped a little bit till they enter *gasp* a hardcore world (oh no)
So like the kid learns that you can't just lock yourself in the room and wish the world goes away while you play minecraft for 12 hours straight, and the parents learn that minecraft is cool and fun and can be a good outlet and outlets are important for adults and children alike. And also that they totally pulled a dick move and they need to try to understand their kid instead of just demanding the kid understands them
Somewhere along the way, the kid ends up in their friends server and the friends help to pull them out of the game w the parents
We end the movie with the kid making an effort to be more present with the parents, and the parents also making an effort to interact with the kid in ways that they know the kid will enjoy and respond well to— shown a family dinner scene where the kid very eagerly eats their food while talking about school, then they all go to play minecraft together
The end <3
Oh right and if you seriously want Jack Black there so fucking bad then make him either the dad or like. School computer teacher who helps the kid use Minecraft EU to learn science (shows off that some schools use minecraft for education purposes) who also helps the kids friends pull them and the parents out of the game
Overall, lots of themes not just about how the game is cool and can let you do cool shit, but also about how the community is cool, and how it's provided so many kids and adults outlets to express themselves and have fun together
That's how you do a game movie
Anyways yeah, minecraft movie looks shit. Hire me instead next time

if jurassic world was more committed to anti-capitalist themes instead of lukewarm liberalism they really could’ve committed more to contrasting corporate evil (claire) to imperial evil (owen). claire consistently grapples with the consequences of corporate negligence, but owen has only one or two moments exploring the implications of his actions. we understand implicitly that claire deeply regrets being a part of the corporate ruling class because of the pain she’s caused others. we don’t, however, have any idea how owen conceptualizes the military. we have no idea if he regrets participating in the continued exploitation of the middle east. we have no idea if he takes pride in it. all we know is that he regrets involving dinosaurs in military programs which is more out of human preservation and love for animals than any political leaning. this creates a gaping blind spot in any sense of nuance for the franchise. owen, like claire, has done extremely exploitative things, yet only claire’s exploitation is given any depth or accountability thus any room for growth

reading the nearly unanimously approved WGA strike announcement + the proposals/counter proposals between them and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), knowing damn well I not only have friends who write for the major networks insulting them with this “gig economy” undermining their union, but that every single writer on the ST staff listed on the official WGA roster…and we sure as hell aren’t getting that season until 2025 now:

Anyone who thinks fanfic commissions should be illegal because "you're making money off someone else's IP" better not ever take nor pay for fanart commissions, because that's the same exact goddamn thing.

Did you know that there is only one Blockbuster store in the world still open?
Tumblr media
If you grew up in the 90s or early 2000s, you probably remember the thrill of going to a Blockbuster store and browsing through hundreds of movies and video games. You might also remember the disappointment of finding out that the movie you wanted was already rented out, or the annoyance of paying late fees for returning your rentals past the due date.
Blockbuster was once the king of video rental stores, with over 9,000 locations and 60,000 employees at its peak in 2004. But as online streaming services like Netflix became more popular and convenient, Blockbuster’s business model became obsolete. By 2010, Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy and closed most of its stores. By 2019, only one store remained open in Bend, Oregon.
The Bend store became the world’s last Blockbuster in July 2018, after the last stores in Alaska and Australia closed down. It has since attracted visitors from all over the world who want to experience a piece of nostalgia and history. The store also sells merchandise like T-shirts, hats and face masks, all made by local businesses.
The store is managed by Sandi Harding, who has been working there since 2004. She is known as the “Blockbuster Mom” and is the star of a Netflix documentary called “The Last Blockbuster” that was released in March 2021. The documentary shows how Harding and her staff keep the store running despite the challenges of stocking new releases, competing with online services and dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Harding said she has received flowers and calls from people around the world who thank her for keeping the store open. She said she is proud to be part of a community that values nostalgia and real-world interactions.
The Bend store has no plans to close anytime soon. It has a steady lease agreement and loyal customers who support it. Harding said she hopes to keep the store open for as long as possible.
So if you ever find yourself in Bend, Oregon, don’t miss the chance to visit the last Blockbuster on Earth. You might just find your favorite movie or video game from your childhood, or discover something new that you never heard of before. And don’t forget to say hi to Sandi Harding, the woman who keeps the Blockbuster dream alive.

We stand with WGA and SAG-AFTRA!
The highly profitable studios with their grossly overpaid CEOs are the epitome of avarice and hypocrisy.
All they can do is make essentially the same movies and TV shows over and over and over again. Their production of cliched formulaic blockbusters is falling flat with audiences. Instead of spending $250 million making one film they could use that to make ten $25 million films. And the irony is that they would probably make more money and wouldn't have to treat actors and writers like livestock.
Parasite (2019) was out of the ordinary in many ways. It was not another predictable and flashy superhero sequel. It cost just $15.5 million to make but has brought in $262.7 million – so far. That lesson is lost on Hollywood which is in a deepening creative rut and wants to make things even worse by stifling imagination with AI.
Daring to be different and relying on quality can be quite profitable. Star Wars and Game of Thrones were not typical sci-fi and fantasy works but they paid off amazingly well.
Perhaps it's time for writers and actors to start their own studio and give the bloated big guys some badly needed competition.
–-–-–-–-–-–-–-–-–-–-–-–-–-–-–-–-
For those who still don't get what these strikes are all about, the bottom line is fair pay for honest work.
The 1 cent paycheque: here’s the awful truth about being an actor in the 'golden' age of streaming

watching the era of the tentpole blockbuster oversaturation studio franchise cinema landscape crumble before my eyes . :-)
#watching repeatedly as big budget movies flop over and over with only a few successes while indie movies keep getting buzz.. :)#a trend which probably will not be ending any time soon given that big studios cant use actors for promo anymore and#if they dont get their shit together on contracts will soon not have any movies left to release w union actors in them.#meanwhile thats just like. not an issue with indie movies that meet the union demands so they get to like#capitalize on this moment where theyre trending upward by working with union actors and writers. while big studios refuse to.#anyway big studios struggling... teehee.#avpost#tbh my fave era of hollywood is definitely the like. new hollywood. post-code post-trustbusting post-television era.#after the studio era declined yknow. and i think it would be nice if we could get that energy back...#i think its possible there's a lot of parallels. to right now and the decline of the studio system#except maybe this time we will do new hollywood with a more diverse crowd so itll be less centered on white men idk.#either way thank fucking god i will not be drowning in 800 bland big event movies per year anymore.#idk sorry if i sound naive or dumb but the strike having so much public support + the failure of all these blockbusters this year#is making me a lot more optimistic that the 20s might be a really good decade for movies . as long as the striking workers get a good deal#but im not like an expert im just a person who likes movies. so its an outsiders perspective and all that

Whenever I remember to take my ADHD medicine, I feel like an oracle trying to make sense of all of the half plots that I have running through my head.
There’s something about a romance, a line of dialogue that says “Well you know, I wouldn’t, but whatever it’s your choice”, and a general aesthetic for at least 3 different characters.
No plot. No cohesive plan. Just vibes, and the movie trailer.

grayson (2004)
blockbuster: nightwing. i'm so glad you're here. nightwing: what did you do? blockbuster: i'm just tidying up loose ends, but this gives me a perfect opportunity to talk to you about your future... which, as it happens, is going to look a lot like this. nightwing: she's dead. give me one good reason why i shouldn't kill you. blockbuster: there isn't one, nightwing. not one. that's the best part. nor is there a single good reason for me to harm a hair on your head. so you're dick grayson by day, who cares? it's a useful piece of information, but it's not the real secret. nightwing: if you go near any of them, i swear to god, i'll -- blockbuster: oh, yes, i know, i know. that's the secret, the essential truth of your nature. you could take every beating i could dish out. you might even enjoy them. you have absolutely no regard for your personal safety. but the people around you--well! that's a different matter. isn't it? i'll take out the people you care about--hell, even strangers you stand next to on the street--you won't be able to shake someone's hand without marking them for death! do you like being alone, dick? nightwing: shut up, rolly, just shut up! blockbuster: i'll make sure you can't save any of them. i'll make sure you relive, over and over, your failure to save my mother! which has now become your failure to save your relationship--your circus--the residents of your building--ms. michaels-- tarantula: get out of the way, nightwing. all you have to do is get out of my way. blockbuster: but he won't. don't you see, you stupid girl? this very moment, he's thinking of how to save me from you! even my life is more important to him than his own! and that's how i'll take him apart. loved one by loved one, innocent by innocent. it will never stop. nightwing: [internal: he's right.] blockbuster: it's never going to stop. nightwing: [internal: it's never gonna stop.] blockbuster: i can keep this up forever. [nightwing, internal: it's never gonna stop.] every loved one, every stranger... [nightwing, internal: every mistake i make, every life i risk... it's never gonna stop... ...never gonna stop. never... stop it... STOP.] tarantula: [shoots blockbuster dead.]

[...] nightwing: sounds like bludhaven is putting out your fires, blockbuster. the city is fighting you. and we know everything. your arms deal on the docks is done. your people there are in custody. whatever poison you were bringing in on that truck won't ever see the streets. the flash has seen to that. the people being trafficked by cargo plane will be safely on the ground now, thanks to the titans. even boss maroni walked straight into a trap. and weren't you waiting on backup? [...] blockbuster: you're not the first in this city to try to stand against me. those who've crossed me are still out there. they're ringing the city. weighted down in the harbour. but your punishment won't end when your lungs fill with the sea because i know who you are now. and after you're gone, i will break everyone who's ever helped you, dick. the mayor. bruce wayne. your precious titans. everyone you've ever known. everyone you've ever loved. i will find them. all of them. and they will hurt before they die. nightwing: you think you... you think you know who i am? you don't know nightwing, you don't know dick grayson. or you'd know that there's no way in hell either one of us... would let you hurt our friends!

The Video Store
Rows of shelves, stacked with cinematic treasures
VHS tapes and DVDs, a rainbow of titles
Nostalgia fills the air, a sense of simpler times
In this haven of movies, each case holds a story
The hum of the VCR, the click of the rewind
The smell of popcorn and the buzz of excitement
Choosing the perfect film for a cozy night in
The video store, a place of endless possibilities
Employee recommendations, handwritten notes
Discovering hidden gems, old classics reborn
The thrill of stumbling upon a long-lost favorite
In this sanctuary of cinema, time stands still
Now the shelves sit empty, the lights dimmed low
Streaming services and online rentals replace
But the memories live on, the magic still lingers
In the heart of every film lover, the video store lives forever
