Eddie blinks his eyes a couple of times to make sure he is actually seeing what he is seeing. He must be living in a nightmare.

You're laying back on one of the pool loungers. One leg dangling over the edge keeping your foot on the warm cement ground, the other spread over Steve's lap as he absently rubs his hand up and down it while he bitches to you about something from work. Your hand rubs up and down Steve's back in comfort. But that isn't the nightmare.

YEAH, I'm assuming you saw the pinned post, but pretty much it's just tumblr messing something up on their end. Sadly not the first time it's happened to one of my blogs, so I sent a support ticket right away and have been waiting to hear back, lol. The blog is still viewable, just not in search results or messages or notes or whatever, I think it can pretty much only be accessed through direct URL?

I'm not sure why it happens, but if I had to guess, it probably has something to do with tumblr's auto-flagging system, it probably thought there was something "inappropriate" in the new chapter or something (which there OBVIOUSLY is not, unless violence counts lmao) and did some weird blog-censoring of sorts, so what I'll probably do for future chapters is just keep the preview text/drawings for tumblr posts and then link to the AO3 version for the full chapter rather than posting entire chapters here, in case tumblr freaks out about certain words or phrases or something lmao

okay so im thinking about luke (again) and for some reason all im wondering about is if, growing up, he knew what he looked like. because stick with me here, just imagine a young luke, six or seven and he’s staring at his own warped face in the metallic refection of water barrel or in the belly of a droid. the mirror in the homestead has been broken for ages and owen and beru can’t spare the credits to replace it. think of him just looking at the hazy vision of himself and wondering if the blond flop on top of his head bears any resemblance to that of his birth mother. if the flecks of dirt on his cheeks that beru calls ‘freckles’ are something he got from his birth father. imagine an older luke now, ten or twelve, sitting in front of aunt beru as she brushes his hair back from his face as she tells him what colour his eyes are, how his stomach flips and his hand turn into fists because how can she says he’s handsome when he can’t see for himself? imagine an even older luke, fifteen or sixteen, and owen finally lugs a busted old mirror through the door. the frame on it has gone from varnished gold to faded copper, shadowed in the corners and cracked across the bottom, but it’s real. imagine him sitting in front of it for hours, picking apart the pieces of his face and finally, for once in his life getting a sense for who luke skywalker actually is. imagine a luke who is now a young man, newly nineteen and owen and beru surprised him with a gift, a true relic of the past. a photograph. the truest capturing of one’s visage, of one’s soul. an image of the three of them together, one that luke proudly places in his room. imagine again, days later, luke stumbling home to find it all gone. burned and gone are the mirror, the photo. owen. beru. imagine the soot blowing into lukes face, covering his freckles, clinging to him, and how for a moment he must wonder if his hair has gone from blonde to black with it. imagine further, if you will, how he never cares to know. never looks to see even when he gets to echo base and there are suddenly mirrors in every fresher. he doesn’t need to see. he can feel it, the ash that sticks to him, even after he scrubs his skin pink and raw. he knows the luke skywalker that he looked at in the mirror back on the homestead will not be the one he sees this time. because that luke is gone and will never be again and he can’t stand the thought of looking in those perfect, shining mirrors, because he knows the image he’ll see will be warped anyways.

Changerion fucks me up so much because like this was a show that got canceled and cut down by 13 episodes in its first series because of low ratings and as I watched it for the first time I kept asking myself what the target audience was supposed to be - obviously it was aired as a children's show but had too much adult humor that just wouldn't make sense to kids, but it was too stupid and campy to be enjoyed by edgy adults like other mature tokusatsu, it didn't have much of a plot but the plot it did have was too avant garde.

I don't think Changerion was confused about its target audience but rather it was simply made to appeal to a small handful of people. So it's less surprising that it got canceled and more surprising it ever got on air in the first place. Which makes me appreciate the miracle of Changerion even more and how it would not be as special as it is to me if it did try to appeal to a wider audience and lose all of that strange charm.

Even beyond how much of an anomaly Changerion was for tokusatsu in general, I am amazed of the circumstances which lead to me as an American watching the show for the first decades after it aired. If my life trajectory had gone even slightly differently I would have never even heard of Changerion much less tried watching it. So it holds such a special place in my heart because of all that

by whitewashing, I mean taking away his culture and the fact that he’s half Māori by essentially treating him as a white person and never mentioning otherwise, including never mentioning the way he might experience things differently due to his background, and the impact of being of a colonised Indigenous people in a white-dominated industry.

personally, I would also consider only ever referring to his skin as ‘tan’ in a way that deliberately avoids saying something like ‘light brown’ to be whitewashing but that’s a tricky one, because it can be a genuine assessment of a skin tone that’s accurate to his colouring—it’s more of the intention behind it, saying things in white person terms out of fear that using more accurate words is offensive, which is always hard to judge.

and I know it’s hard and a skill to be inclusive in a way that doesn’t draw up divides between people of colour and people experiencing white privilege, whilst not ignoring the fact that everyone isn’t the same nor fits into a white-normalised vocabulary. this is in no way villainising anyone who hasn’t checked their white privilege or the way that language comes across, but is intended to start a respectful conversation and hopefully result in the fandom being more intentional about recognising the impact of race.
