Performative Callouts in Syscourse
First off, what is performative activism? Performative activists care more about appearances, clout, and attention. Rather than genuine support, education, or progress; they use their platform to uplift themselves for positive attention.
What's a way someone can be a performative activist?
Callouts. Callouts refers to publicly criticizing someone--often harshly or aggressively-- not out of genuine concern for harm or misinformation. Usually, callouts are used to gain likes, followers, or approval from people who also dislike the person being called out.
Some callouts can be a neccessary tool for accountability, but it can become performative when the focus shifts from resolving the harm and misinformation, to gaining social approval and boosting one's reputation.
Signs of a clout callout:
The lack of private conversations. Genuine accountability starts with reaching out privately to the person to address the issue or misunderstanding. Performative activists skip this, and immediately make the conflict public for attention.
The lack of nuance. Callouts are simplified into "good vs. bad", which ignores the complex opinions that people have in syscourse. The person may of misspoken, lacked knowledge, or simply had a different viewpoint.
Centering themselves over the harmed group. The person doing the calling out would position themselves as the moral authority. As in, "I was brave enough to call out the exclusionist."
Performative outrage over small mistakes. Amplifying minor misunderstandings into large callouts, aren't proportionate to the harm caused. Such as, someone using outdated language, and instead of correcting them, they get called out and dragged through the mud.
Dogpiling and harassment. Calling out for clout often invites other people to jump in with insults and harassment, which creates a hostile community.
What are reasons for clout callouts? One could be seeking validation, or wanting to be seen as "the good one" or morally superior in syscourse debates. They could also want to build a platform, gain likes and followers, or be seen as a leader of a community. Rage culture can feel rewarding, or even exciting, even when unproductive.
The consequences of performative callouts:
It shuts down a nuanced conversation, making people afraid to ask questions, admit ignorance, or engage in syscourse for fear of being publicly shamed.
It creates a toxic online space, making it into a battleground of opinions instead of a place for education and growth.
Callouts for clout often mask themselves as "activism," but they contribute to a toxic atmosphere in syscourse. Healthy accountability focuses on education and growth, while performative callouts fuel division and harm under the blanket of "progress."
