I'm trying to figure out why I have such a knee-jerk negative reaction to any fic that describes Jess as wearing the leather jacket in the "wrong place" (as in, at a time when he never wore it in the series). Because, in theory, that's such an insignificant detail, right? But I think it's because Jess's leather jacket is so overwhelmingly associated to me with the "bad boy" image/stereotype he has, which I feel very strongly is a misunderstanding and oversimplification of his character. And that jacket only represents the worst point of his character! He has NEVER worn that jacket at a time when he was with Rory! He never wore it when they were falling in love, he never wore it when they were dating, but only when they were separated! And he has NEVER worn that jacket at a time when he was happy!!! Only ever when he was MISERABLE and at his LOWEST! Like, WHY would you feel nostalgic for that specific point in his life?! And if the answer is just "I think he looks hot that way," I feel like... if THAT'S your "favorite version" of Jess, that's FINE, it's whatever... But I don't think we read the character in the same way or like him for the same reasons, and well... that makes me doubt I'll be able to enjoy it.

I very much know this is because Jessica Cruz's origin story was written by Geoff Johns in a shitty comic, but by God is there so much going on there. Like damn.

Like there's the really, genuinely compelling stuff, for example the presence of ring horror and loss of control w Jess and Power Ring/Volthoom + the implications of that (character wise, both before and after JL 50) which is just SO interesting (and angsty!) to me personally

But then there's also more plot holes than you can shake a stick at as well (where did Jess get her ring. Guys it just showed up who died where did she get it from GUYS-)

All interspersed between some of the worst character writing for other Justice League members in existence (Wondy fans you know what I mean) and crazy ass plots out there

tbh i wish they had been more consistent about the "erica always pulls through for me" element of serica's dynamic. like Erica is a morally grey character but I wish she was less so when it came to Sarah. Erica is a good friend when she chooses to be but I think the idea of an unconditional kind of dedication to her best friend when she's otherwise double crossing and biting/killing people would make her character even better. i think her questionable actions in the movie are very important for her character transformation as they display her hunger for popularity/revenge but one thing that always really bothered me was that she never formally apologizes to Sarah for what she did (hooking up with Jesse and nearly letting Gord kill Sarah). like rewatching the film, she was such a prick 😭😭 and then for her to be excited to see Jesse when he came back was...eh to me. Although, Erica may not fully understand the ways in which Jesse ruined Sarah's life.

this plays into her pressuring Sarah to drink human blood throughout season 1. of course Erica would think that's the easiest solution bc it IS and Sarah absolutely does need to accept her vampirism if she's gonna 1) survive and 2) be happy. I think the disconnect Sarah has from Rory, Erica, and the rest of the vampire community, as well as their inability to really understand the emotional turmoil that being turned caused her and her moral objection to biting people are very important elements of the show. Like in that sense Rory and Erica don't even MEAN to alienate Sarah with their apathy but they do and it's still shitty!! What I do wish was that Erica's genuine concern for Sarah's well being was more evident. like I don't think it's that she didn't care about Sarah and what she was going through (which was what it felt like sometimes) it's just that she couldn't understand why her friend was doing this to herself. Like she knows she's DYING and she is seriously worried and wants Sarah to get better but she's unable to sympathize with the fact that she doesn't want to drink human blood.

Erica falling short as a friend bc of the real differences between her and Sarah in terms of their values is way more interesting than her just being a shallow self-centered mean girl. Sarah being the exception to Erica's egocentrism adds so much more depth Erica's character bc it solidifies the motives underneath her persona. she'll either kill you or she'll kill for you. she'd bury a body for you but she's not the best person to help you through a fragile emotional state.

16. What kinds of people do they have arguments with in their head?

okay i truly think scotch argues with seraph in his head all the time. ALL the time. scotch largely ignores them, and vice versa, because he dislikes them and they know it. seraph is very conflict avoidant lol, and as long as hes not a "threat" they dont care to talk to him about their problems. he probably argues with atlas and jacob (his older brother) too, atlas about more stupid small stuff, and jacob about childhood and life stuff :p

im trying to think of more general groups he would argue with but i cant come up with anything BAHAH. hes not exactly conflict avoidant in the annoying libra way that seraph is, he more just ignores conflict for his friends’ (mostly atlas’) sake. idk if that makes sense LOL

35. What is the smallest, morally questionable choice they’ve made?

hmmm.. smallest? i mean scotch strings eloise along for most of the time pre timeskip. its not a main focus but its definitely important in order to understand scotch as a whole. she and scotch go out for a while, and mid way through that he realizes hes GAY gay. lol. and obviously lying to her about that is pretty questionable after a while. especially since he and atlas have been 👉👌 like the whole time. but she kind of knows. well

something a little bigger would be him encouraging or otherwise turning a blind eye to all the weird stuff atlas is up to. he doesn't know what it's like to be a werewolf, he can't say anything, right? lol.... murder is okay if its a talking dog doing it. scotch enabler supreme. actually when seraph is introduced, he and atlas have a 'joke' (kind of starts being real) about luring seraph somewhere to kill them. obviously doesnt happen and gets abandoned. but i think its important to know about their dynamic LOL

this guy is kind of goofy. i cant think of phrases rn but he has a specific way of speaking.. you could watch pretty much any old pop punk band interview and kind of get the idea. HAHAH

atlas is a big fan of saying 'its fine' for all situations ever. family in mortal danger? its fine. completely splitting? its fine. arthritis excruciating? its fine. hes one of those people that dont like to deal with the fawning of others unless hes feeling real special. Ends up putting people in more danger a lot of the time. i think eloise is the only fan of communication in this friend group to be honest. i should have made her the main character

he tends to make promises he cant keep as well, but thats more general..

i have NO idea. i feel like atlas would be a music snob, so maybe his favorite 'super underground' bands. otherwise he'd probably never recommend raw human meat to another human (no matter how much scotch asks -__-).. (he would chicken out anyway)

55. What’s something they’re expected to enjoy based on their hobbies / profession that they actually dislike / hate?

um. so atlas hates working out. he especially hates running, you know, the thing that wolves are known for doing a lot of? unfortunately the lycanthropy came with a side effect of pretty bad arthritis, so that doesnt exactly encourage him. he DOES exercise, a lot since hes pretty much required for his ermm "side job", but he hates it 😸 besides the arthritis it’s mostly because I think it’s silly that he hates it. yay
