you'll get the urge as an artist or a writer to say out loud the things you're worried about "the proportions are off" "kind of out of character" "i'm not good at summaries" "didn't get as much detail as i wanted" "i made a mistake and here's how" and that's the self-conscious part of your brain telling you "it's bad and if you don't tell them you know it's bad then they'll think you're stupid" but you've got to ignore that little voice and pretend you think it's good or else that little voice is going to ruin your life

Okay so remember when I said that this line could be foreshadowing the duel between Shrike and Dead Eye?
Jawbone's response to that line is pretty fitting
He isn't moving!! He can't move!! There's someone trying to shoot him and he's staying still!!!!!!!
@dougielombax To me, he confirmed it when he redesigned Dead Eye to be part of the monkey wrench cast
Let me explain
Ok. So there are a bit of layered explanations and quite the buildup here but it pays off. Bare with me
There was this Toltec emperor called Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl (not to be confused with the GOD named Quetzalcoatl) that predated the Aztecs. There are bits and pieces about his life in different codices, and as you will see some are mixed with myths.
The reason why he was so important and the later civilizations knew about him was because his reign was a time of notable peace and he prohibited human sacrifices, he only allowed animal offerings and human bloodletting (but no killing!)
The stories about this benevolent ruler arrived to the Spanish and so they made the argument that it could have been a Christian religious figure. And there are various sources (all from the colonizers, unsurprisingly) saying that the guy was white and bearded.
Finally, a version of how he dies is that he throws himself into a bonfire and becomes the morning star, the planet Venus. Other sources say that he simply left but he promised to come back. The Spanish also used this to claim that the natives thought Hernán Cortés the conquistador was him coming back. Sigh
Now!
There is an Aztec god that represents the morning star/planet Venus. He's called Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli. He is an aspect of Quetzalcoatl (yes, this time it's the god)
Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli has an important role in the legend of the five suns, when the Fifth Sun, the god Tonatiuh, is created.
(Tonatiuh, as represented as the Sun in codices, is nearly always red skinned, and has a red palette. This is going somewhere I swear)
When Tonatiuh is born, he is stuck in place in the sky, he can't move. He says that he needs the blood of the gods (and also later, humans) to be able to make his journey across the sky. He asks the gods to sacrifice themselves for him.
Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli doesn't take this very well, and so he tries shooting him with his dart thrower. But he misses!!!
Tonatiuh is clearly not happy so he shoots him back and he hits him in the head.
So we have these two characters. One of them is
- Benevolent ruler of a people
- White
- Bearded
- Associated with the morning star ⭐
- Leaves his people, but promises to come back
- Associated with the god Quetzalcoatl (<- LARIAT)
And the other is
- Red
- Bloodthirsty
- Known for having a better aim, admittedly
(Also, consider the two bullet holes in his hat! It implies that somebody tried shooting him, but they missed)
They shoot each other
Tlalhuizcalpantecuhtli misses, and Tonatiuh hits the other in the head
The character of One Eye/Dead Eye has been redesigned to be part of the mw cast, but I suspect that might have always been the plan...
