Basically Roman and Virgil in my White Lies AU:
Roman, looking intensely in a mirror in his room: I just... Need someone to be my friend. Someone who will listen to and support me, who won't betray my trust and break down my confidence when I don't agree with them... Someone who also kinda hates Janus... Someone to binge watch Disney movies with me...
Virgil "chilling" in his own room alone in the dark side: *sits up and looks around suspiciously* I feel like something is calling me

Check Ignition: Part IX
That Sobbe fake-dating Hogwarts au that one person asked for and I dove into headfirst
First part // Previous part // Next part
This fic is wrapping up and I love writing longform, so send me your new requests! (or ideas for oneshots, I love those too)
Robbe was ashamed to admit many of the things that made his apartment home. Here it was, the truth of it: everything here was in some way tainted by sickness. He didn’t talk about it while he was at school. He didn’t talk about school while he was here. It made sense to keep the two lives distinctly separate, save from a few consolation sessions with Jens and the occasional fact for Sander.
He bumped his shoulders on the narrow doorframe as he lugged his trunk inside, his mother right behind him. In the entryway, on a tiny side table, three bottles of prescription medication waited their arrival. Each had a sticky note designating the time of next dose. Past that, the hall led straight to a kitchen at its end. Three rooms—two bedrooms, one bathroom—broke off before then. Their living room branched from the kitchen, big enough for a couch and a flatscreen TV as well as a small-ish Christmas tree.
This apartment worked in a way that his friends’ magic-filled homes did not. Sure, when his father was around, they never did the dishes manually or resorted to blankets when the heating went out, but it wasn’t what Jens had. Perhaps that was why Robbe did not see Jens much over the holidays.
Robbe crossed the threshold to his bedroom and dropped his things on his bed. His thoughts returned, as they were wont to do, to Sander. Sander must be all alone at Hogwarts right now. Robbe didn’t know what to make of him.
“It’s Christmas,” said Robbe aloud to jar himself from that rabbit trail. He put away everything that mattered. Scattered everything that didn’t across the floor. There, now it felt like his dormitory at school.
Against his better judgement, he scrawled out something on a scrap of paper. Maybe if he could contact Sander, things would make more sense. Or maybe he was stupid. Either way. A simple tracking spell, an open window, and it would zip its way to its recipient at Hogwarts. He doubted he’d get in trouble for such a simple use of underage magic.
Happy Christmas. Sorry you have to spend it alone. Yeah, it totally didn’t sound sarcastic.
Robbe let the message go. He watched it disappear over the London skyline, dancing above the twinkling lights of the city. This view had nothing on the view from Hogwarts. After that, he was exhausted from exams week. He curled up on his mattress—the sheets on this one were a nice touch—and went right to sleep. There was time for life to happen tomorrow, and he didn’t fancy making conversation with his mother so soon into their two weeks of forced proximity.
***
Robbe spent most of the next days hiding out in his bedroom. Jens took care of his required communication rather early in their separation; the owl arrived at Robbe’s window before lunchtime the second day: Robbe, my parents invited Jana for Christmas dinner. She'd going to be there. Please inform me of your plans as soon as possible, so I can join you instead. Not really. I honestly think we're going to get back together. Wow, it sounds dumb as I write it. Have a Happy Christmas, if I don't write again before then, and make sure you eat all your vegetables. Love, Jens. Robbe hastily scrawled a reply and sent it right back: Jens, I never have any plans. You can come whenever you want to. Love, Robbe.
Around dinnertime on the fourth day, Robbe walked back into the hallway and down to the kitchen, where his mother poured hot chocolate powder in two mugs. She dumped a can of soup into a pot and set it to simmer on the burner, stirring occasionally, while she microwaved a measuring cup of water. Something rammed into the window at full force, startling her into dropping her spoon.
She put a hand on her forehead as if checking for fever. “Robbe, what was that?”
“Owl, Mom,” said Robbe. He tried not to be frustrated with her. There was just so much on his plate, and he wasn’t supposed to be here, because he was supposed to be with Sander at school. If Sander was doing okay.
Robbe’s mother had never gotten the hang of a magical household. Robbe didn’t have the right to be bitter about it.
“Should I open the window?” she asked.
“Yeah.”
His mother slid the window open. A barn owl flapped into the apartment building, despite their landlord’s explicit animal-of-any-kind prohibition. It landed on top of their refrigerator and ruffled its brown and white feathers. Clutched in its beak was a folded piece of parchment, tied with a long twine thread, sealed with a stamp of red wax. Robbe recognized the owl from the Hogwarts owlery. They were general-use.
He jumped up to take the note. Jens did not usually send two owls in one day. Aaron’s owl was white.
“I’ll never get used to that,” said his mother as the owl flew back out the window. An alarm on her cell phone beeped several times. “Oh, pills. I’ll be right back.” She rushed into the foyer.
Robbe surveyed the apartment in her absence. A sprig of mistletoe hung over the space connecting the kitchen to the living room. Several wrapped presents rested beneath the tree, one or two with his name in brightened cursive that he could see from this far away. He spotted the special picture ornament he made for his mother when he was little, the photograph of her and him riding on a swing in a public park. They used to get along.
He looked down at the paper in his hands and broke the seal.
There were no words written. Only a telephone number. Jens and Aaron did not have phones in their houses; muggle technology was useless in areas permeated with magic. Moyo owned one for clout purposes, sometimes, and this could be him—except, he did not use the school’s owls if he could help it. He borrowed from Jens.
That left one person who might want to contact Robbe.
“Alright, soup,” said his mother, reentering the kitchen. “Tonight, I was thinking we should catch up on TV. Honestly, I don’t know how you survive without it at Hogwarts.”
“There are other things to do,” said Robbe.
“Maybe, but not as exciting.” She took the soup pot from the burner and poured it into two bowls, which she then carried into the living room. They stored a small folding table under the couch. She set it up like a coffee table and left their bowls there. If they had any class, they might have the money to afford something made of wood, at least.
“Can I actually—” Robbe began. He gestured to the phone number.
“You’re spending your quality time with me,” said his mother. She patted the spot beside her on the couch. “C’mon. I’ve been recording everything. Oh, hang on.” She waited until he sat down to lean over. “What’s been going on at school. Tell me all about it. You never write.”
“You never got used to owls.”
“That’s an awful reason.”
“Nothing important happens,” he assured her. “I’d write if it mattered.”
“Nothing? No one special?”
“No, Mom, nothing you’d want to hear about.”
“You know I don’t believe that,” she said. “Handsome boy like you.” But she sat back and turned on the television. Christmastime here was TV shows, silence, dancing around one another. This was why Robbe would’ve liked to stay on campus with Sander, when Sander still wanted him there. If Sander ever wanted him there. They watched three whole episodes of Call the Midwife without saying a single word to each other.
Robbe’s mother was a good person. He knew she was a good person. She tried so hard to be things for him, to be involved in his life. He understood her illness wasn’t her fault at a basic level. He understood that he was wrong to be angry about an innocent, poking question that any parent would have likely posed.
But there was a part of him missing that she couldn’t give back after she’d taken it. What kind of parent leaves their fourteen-year-old in the house to care for everything while she lies in bed all summer? What kind of parent—
There was someone special, there was Sander. Sander and his mother were apart because they needed to be, because school and home did not mix.
Robbe rose from the couch during the credits of the third and motioned apologetically to his mother. He pointed toward the bathroom. On the way there, he snatched her phone from the kitchen counter. His fingers shook as he dialed the number.
Someone picked up on the second ring. “I just got home,” said Robbe. He didn’t know why he felt so bad about not calling sooner.
“You got my letter,” said Sander. Robbe’s heart turned into a dozen origami butterflies. He tried to catch them in a net and stomp them underfoot.
“Owls are cool,” Robbe said.
“How are you?”
“I’m good. How are you?”
“Good.”
“Good.”
The line went silent. Was that it? Did Sander send a whole-ass latter to hear Robbe’s voice for two seconds? Kind of romantic, yes, but it didn’t do anything to fix anything. Robbe couldn’t reconcile the way Sander spoke to him with the way Sander acted around him, the way Sander acted around other people.
This could have been their time. Two whole weeks of kissing, or whatever it was couples did went they were unsupervised.
“Listen,” said Sander. “I’ve been thinking.” His sentences took on a sort of pregnant quality, as if each contained multitudes more within it. Sander was fighting down dozens of others to say each one.
“About what?”
“About, um, you. I guess.” Sander cleared his throat. “You really liked me?”
“I guess so.”
“How is—how’s your mother?”
Robbe didn’t know where something like that would come from. “She’s fine for now. We’re watching Call the Midwife.”
Sander’s laugh sounded forced. “My mother likes that too. Is it… not good to be there?”
“Well, she hasn’t drowned me in a bathtub yet. You sound like you have something to say.”
“I was thinking we could just—talk.”
What the hell was this? “Sander,” said Robbe, doing his very best to sound like a prefect. “It was a Christmas card. If you have something to say—” He tried to channel the voice Jens used when he was disappointed after a Quidditch match, the kind of steely cool that could only come from a place of care. As it was, he knew Sander could hear the hope festering beneath his skin. He wants to tell me he loves me.
“I—I don’t have anything to say,” said Sander, but it was an obvious lie.
“Then I’ll hang up.” Robbe braced himself against the bathroom counter. Polished marble reflected his face almost as clearly as the mirror ahead. “I said I didn’t want to be friends. I can’t handle being friends yet.”
“No, don’t hang up.”
“Any more questions about Mom?”
Sander’s breath caught. “You don’t like me.”
“Not this again.”
“No, really, you don’t.” Sander spoke faster. “You said so. I don’t know, when it was fake, I thought—” He coughed. “I can’t go back to nothing.”
“I said I liked you,” said Robbe. “You don’t make any sense.”
“Yes, but—”
“Did you really send an owl back to talk me out of a crush? Or are you in love with my mom?”
“No, I—”
“Good.” Robbe knocked his toothbrush cup off the sink, sending it clattering to the floor. He heard his mother shifting around in the living room, poised to come check on him any minute. This conversation would have to end sooner rather than later. “I have to go. If you’ve still got something, spit it out.”
There were a few seconds of silence. Robbe could hear the beginnings of a sentence several times, nothing quite reaching the air.
“Okay,” he said. “Goodbye.” He tapped the end button. That might have been a little harsh, yes, but it was Christmas. The couch and Call the Midwife awaited. He rejoined his mother in the living room, leaving her cell phone plugged into its charger beside their toaster.
They watched another whole episode. It pained him to think of her loitering about the house while he was gone, rearranging the cabinets and recording television shows, even if he hated the thought of staying with her more. He didn’t get Sander’s interest… come to think of it, Sander was concerned about her during their make-out session in the workshop.
The phone started ringing.
“I’ve got it,” said Robbe, before his mother could get off the couch. This time, he took it all the way to his bedroom and locked the door to answer it.
Sander was quieter this time. “You called the number.”
“It would have been rude not to. You didn’t sign it. It could have been anybody.”
“You knew who it was.”
There wasn’t much to say to that, so Robbe waited instead of responding. Sander filled the gap after a while, in something even smaller than a whisper, something that sent shivers down Robbe’s spine. “I miss you.” A whistle sounded somewhere in the distance.
Too much. Ugh, why did Robbe think he could handle something like this? He did what he always did when Sander was involved: he was honest. “Look, you don’t make any sense to me. I hear from Noor that you’re head-over-heels in love with me, I hear from you that you’re back with Britt. Well, you’re not, so I’m hearing you’re a liar, too.” Robbe bit his lip to keep from getting choked up. “We barely even had anything, Sander, but I loved every second. You can’t keep pulling on my strings, okay? I can’t handle it.”
“I don’t mean to be pulling,” said Sander. Something ruffled against the receiver. “Your mother, though, she—”
“Good, then don’t bother calling again unless you have something new to tell me. Goodbye.” Robbe smashed the end button this time, scratching the screen protector with his nail. He promised himself he’d fix it later, provided no one got him trouble for his magical Christmas card to Sander.
Back into the living room. His mother lay down across all the cushions and monopolized the space. She pulled a crocheted blanket across her legs, her eyes glassy as she stared at the TV. Robbe flashed back to his worst year again—getting up for school and seeing her there, unmoving.
The last Christmas they spent together, her medication mixture made her violently ill at the slightest hint of indigestion. That could happen this year, it could. There was too much going on in Robbe’s life to deal with her right now.
They’d make blueberry pancakes together. She’d microwave soup for dinner. This was his life.
The phone screen lit up once more with an incoming call from the number as before. Robbe let it ring out. Another came. When he let that ring, another. He answered on Sander’s fifth attempt.
“Please don't hang up this time. Your mother is sick,” blurted Sander on the other end, almost as if he read Robbe’s mind. If his speech was unhinged earlier, now it was a runaway train. “She’s sick and you hate her and I’m sick so you’ll hate me. That was it.” He took a deep breath and the phone line crackled—Hogwarts wouldn’t have the best reception, would it? “I have liked you for forever, okay? That’s my something new.”
Wow. Okay. What the fuck.
“What?” managed Robbe.
“That’s what I needed to say. Before. You don’t like me because you can’t. It has to be over because it can’t ever happen.” Sander’s voice lowered. “I thought it might hurt you less if you knew. But I also can't sit around and pretend that nothing's wrong.”
Robbe rehashed every conversation they ever had in a second. He did not talk about his mother much in any of those—he tried to keep her out of it. She frustrated him to no end. Her stupid pills, the stupid genetics that doomed him to a future of dealing with the same problems, his stupid father walking out. If it wasn’t for her, everything would be fine. But he didn’t—he didn’t hate her.
Why would Sander think he hated her? What was going on?
The library, the offhand comment on Lexapro. The workshop, how he said he didn’t want to return to her because she’d ruin Christmas. The way he referred to her on his and Sander’s second astronomy tower rendezvous: “sick in the head.” Every little thought he had about her.
“It was always going to be like this,” said Sander. Wind blew against his end of the phone; Robbe had to strain to hear most of the words. “I thought when it was fake, it could be okay, because, well, you know, but then you kissed me and I just—There’s no hiding it forever, is there? It's got to come out.”
“What did you say about my mom?” Robbe demanded.
“I stopped it because it isn't what you want.”
More than that. Britt came to Robbe in the astronomy tower with a slip of paper and a warning of sorts—He isn’t going to tell you. And what had Willem said to his friends, when Sander was asleep the day after they kissed? Was that something that just happened? Were there times that Willem couldn’t wake Sander up?
Robbe knew what that meant. Britt’s voice echoed in his head. It’s hard to tell between what he wants and what’s a symptom. He’d thought it controlling at the time, and it was, but he also understood the feeling. When you loved someone, you wanted to keep them safe. Robbe was a certified idiot. Puzzle pieces falling into place.
Sander did not slow down. “You were going to stay here with me to avoid being there with her. But we’re the same. We’ve always been the same. It’s bipolar, Robbe, and it’s fine that you don’t want it. What matters is that I can’t live with nothing from you, okay? We can’t just not talk.”
Robbe’s hand went numb from gripping the phone so hard.
“I don’t want you to hate me. I don’t want you to hate me like you hate your mom.”
“I don’t hate my mom,” said Robbe. “I won’t hate you—don’t hate you.” He felt bewildered, standing in the middle of his living room, with this crisis happening a whole train ride away. What the fuck was going on? His mother raised her eyebrow at him from her position on the couch.
“You do, you said so. And you’d hate me. I didn’t want to upset you, I didn’t—” Something in the background blared, loud enough to mask the rest of Sander’s sentence. Wind? Rain?
“Where are you?” Robbe asked. Britt’s piece of paper—what did it say? He should have taken the time to set it aside, stupid stupid stupid—
“This was stupid,” said Sander, suddenly even more rushed. “I’m sorry. I should have sent another letter. I let Jens talk me into it—” Robbe waved his wand in the general direction of his bedroom—the Ministry of Magic could expel him for underage sorcery—and summoned Britt’s paper. Still a mess of cursive lines. Still blurry.
His mother made a face like, is everything okay? He nodded back.
“I’m putting too much on you,” Sander continued on the phone. “I don’t want to be another thing you have to worry about. That’s why it has to be over. We’re over. But I don’t want to never hear from you again. That’s not what I want.”
“Are you alright?” Robbe whispered.
“I’m fine. I’m, out--” Sander sounded a million miles away in a snowstorm. The end of the sentence got lost. "Moyo and Jens said you'd be here, and free, so...I'm in love with you. This is my something new." The line clicked dead, although Robbe couldn't tell if it was Sander's decision to end the call or fate had intervened. His arms dropped to his sides, the phone to the floor. Something sounded at the door to the apartment. A knock? Robbe remained rooted to the spot.
There wasn't a list he could put together for this situation. He did not hate his mother. Sometimes he hated her. He hated what her disorder did to her. He hated coming home and finding her somewhere, not doing anything, holding a glass of water without the will to bring it to her lips. He hated having to search all the cabinets for bowls when she reorganized their kitchen at three in the morning. Everything he said to Sander, he meant. Everything about her. That could be number one on the list. Number two, he loved Sander. Sometimes he convinced himself he didn't. He thought of his mother wasting away on their couch, lying about taking her pills, camping out on the bathroom floor during rough weeks. Home and school were supposed to be separate. He did not want to think of Sander throwing up blueberry pancakes after taking a handful of pills. He didn't know what he was supposed to do. He needed time to think.
The knocking came again, harder. Robbe walked over as if in a dream, barely touching the floor. He vaguely remembered Jens saying something in his letter about visiting, though this seemed short notice. He only said yes to the proposition because he knew Jens would never actually make good on the offer. Robbe opened the door to Sander, hair ruffled, eyes wild. Fucking Sander. What the fuck. Sander's brown roots were more visible than the bleach blond, even though they did not seem to be any longer. He wore the same leather jacket as their first date wrapped tight around his shoulders. In one hand, he held Moyo's broomstick— Robbe could recognize it by the scrapes on the wood. He had the same look on his face that he had that night in the dormitories when he was drunk and reaching out for Robbe. This wasn't happening. What the hell was happening?
"We need to talk to each other," said Sander, without pause for breath. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you about everything, and I'll ruin anything else, I know I will, but you have to tell me we can."

Since I saw that Willem H got an earring I’ve been dying for an au where Robbe comes home to Sander with his ear pierced cause he’s lost a bet with the broerrrs (or just cause he simply wanted an earring) and Sander goes like crazy about it pls make it happen
Inspired by @o1o0o0o‘s latest art <3
“No, please! Stay...Sander...” Robbe grabs what he can of Sander’s white shirt, pouting, whining, calling his name with that tone that always catches Sander’s attention, doing everything he knows can make Sander change his mind. He doesn’t really need to go to class, there’s no problem in skipping classes for one day.
Sander laughs and comes closer, leaning down to be able to reach Robbe sitting on the floor, using the Bowie shirt Noor gave Sander last Christmas and his black boxers, nothing else, leaving gentle pecks on Robbe’s pouty lips.
“It’s just a few classes and I’ll be back, promise.” Robbe huffs out an annoyed exhale and Sander can’t help but look at the new addition in Robbe’s ear. His boyfriend notices and Sander raises his eyebrows when their eyes meet again.
“I miss your taste...” Robbe holds his shirt tighter and Sander smiles, looking at his whole face, playing with his hair, putting his hand on the side of Robbe’s face, cupping his now pierced ear.
They kiss again, by far not long enough, but Sander is really getting late. Robbe nibbles at his lower lip and Sander presses his fingers in the back of Robbe’s neck, making him look up even more. “Behave yourself, cutie. Or not,” he whispers against Robbe’s ear, nuzzling against it before looking at him again.
“I’ll send you some proofs.” Robbe grins and Sander kisses him again just because. He would love to see Robbe do that, but he doubts he would do it. The thought of him doing is actually quite fun for Sander. Robbe is still very wary about sharing photos that anyone can see. They are really getting good at videocalls, they’ll get to photos eventually, if ever truly needed, even though nothing compares to this, the real touch, seeing Robbe just inches away.
“Robbe...”
He raises his eyebrows and giggles and Sander almost drops his bag and goes back to the lazy make out session they were having on the floor, Robbe sitting right in front of him, both arms loosely wrapped around his neck, his thighs on top of Sander’s. “What? You’re the one leaving me here, all alone.”
His phone goes off, it’s the alarm that Sander always sets as a last warning for himself, knowing he’ll need one everytime he’s with Robbe.
Robbe holds his shirt tighter again and almost makes him fall on top of him.
“I love you. I miss you already, I’ll be thinking about you, drawing you until I’m back in your arms.” Robbe softens his pout and his grip on Sander’s shirt too. Sander keeps getting distracted by the piercing and Robbe notices, shoving him away, but Sander holds him by his jaw, kissing him one, two, three more times, kissing his jaw all the way to his ear too.
“Don’t take too long!”
“I won’t. And don’t get another piercing while I’m out.” Sander points at Robbe, finally standing up, trying to fix his now wrinkled shirt, but he’s actually liking it, a reminder of how Robbe wanted to keep Sander there with him. Sander won’t ever get tired of needy Robbe.
He walks back, stumbling against the door, putting his hand back to open it as he keeps his eyes on Robbe, still sitting on the floor, his lean legs lazily sprawled on the carpet, his thighs being hugged by his underwear, both arms dropped in between the legs, Robbe with a pout on his swollen lips and that damn piercing. Everything there, needing him, wanting Sander back.
“Wait for me...” He tries to talk softly so Robbe’s mom won’t hear him. Robbe sighs and nods his head, relaxing, putting his arms back to lean against them, now giving Sander a full view of every inch of his body...
“I’ll try.”

A Battle for All
Characters: Patton, Logan, Roman, Remus, Janus, Virgil
For: @littlebigmouse
Warnings: Gore, Extreme Gore, Unsympathetic Patton, Unsympathetic Janus, Unsympathetic Logan, Major Character Death, Betrayal, Body horror/gore
Words: 2,500
Hey Mouse, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! I was your gifter this year for the @sanderssidesgiftxchange and I gave you a super hero Au with a side of gore [Or rather a main course of gore] I hope you enjoy it!
This was it, the battle for all the marbles, or as Morality said, "All the cookies in the cookie jar." Whatever you wanted to call it, this was the most important battle. Here and now, would decide the fate of the world. Sure, you hear that in all the superhero movies to get the action and the thrill up, even if the heroes always win in the movies. This though, this was very, very real, and all the heroes could feel a deep fear fill them. It wouldn't stop them from protecting the entire world, and they would do everything to make sure that the world was saved. It was still an unsettling feeling, to be staring potential death straight in the face, your future becoming less clear by the second.
Sanders University, the place they were meant to defend, held the key to world domination, at least to the Troublesome Twosome that was Deceit and Logic. The university was famous for its advanced technology, some of which could give normal humans pseudo-Superpowers, putting them on an even playing field with natural born Supers. The Twosome's plan was to engineer as much superpowered technology as possible, to create an army of villains that would help them conquer the entire world. First they would start with the University itself, but with how much super-tech was in there already, they wouldn't have trouble building a small army to defend it while they work on bigger projects.
The Prince stood on one end and the Duke on the other. In between them stood Anxiety and Morality, their healer and shield respectively. The Duke was holding a thunderbolt in one hand, preparing to throw it should the villains pull any tricks. Prince was holding a pen in his hand, preparing to draw up a weapon or something that would protect them. Anxiety had his hand out, ready to heal the team and get them back to the fight. Morality was empty handed at the moment, giving the villains a smile as if they were just naïve children instead of people bent on world domination.
"Now kiddos," Morality started, holding his arms out in a gesture of peace. "We really don't have to fight today. If you would just willingly come with us we can help you," he assured, making sure his voice would sound even and calming. "Please, don't do this. It would only end in disaster and chaos for everyone, including you two."
Deceit chuckled quietly, which cued Logic to break out in maniacal laughter. Morality cringed and even the Duke shuddered, which was uncommon since he was rather creepy in his own right. Prince and Anxiety looked unamused, even if Anxiety's hand fell to his side, where a short sword, crafted specifically for him by Prince, rested on his hip.
"Oh Morality, darling~" Deceit purred, elbowing his laughing companion in the stomach, who wheezed and went silent, rubbing his stomach as if that would make the pain go away. "That's exactly what we want. Chaos and disaster are what will help us take over this worthless world. Soon, oh so soon we will rule and you will be powerless to stop us! Now, get out of our way and we may spare your lives, if you beg that is." He waved his arm in a big gesture to the building behind the trio of heroes, the one that held the key to their dream.
"Never!" Prince snarled, a sword held in his hands. "We shall never let you get past any of us! We will put our lives on the line to protect the world we love! You'll never win, so give up now and walk away!"
That made Deceit laugh again, wiping a tear from his eye with a gloved hand. "Oh Prince, foolish fool, you will be made to eat your words. I can assure you of that. Logic, if you will."
Logic stepped forward, snickering as he pulled out a remote with a single, red button. He pressed it, causing a dozen cars to crumble and meld together. After a few seconds a giant metal golem stood behind the Duo. Logic cackled, covering his mouth as he snorted. "Be-ha- prepared to meet m-my greatest creation to date, the car golem!" He announced, pointing forward. "Go! Wreck, maim, DESTROY!" He shrieked, doubling over with laughter.
The golem seemed to come to life, surging forward towards the heroes. It was coming fast, intent on ending the battle and the heroes once and for all. It had no mind, no heart, no soul. It had a purpose though, a sole purpose it was destined to complete. End the heroes and leave not even a single one standing.
Morality stepped in front of everyone and summoned a giant dome shield, covering all four of them. Prince and Duke stood behind Patton, while Anxiety put all his energy and focus into keeping Morality's shield strong, which meant using all he had to heal it.
"When I lower the shield go for the weak spots in it's limbs!" Morality shouted, crying out when the Golem pounded on the shield, putting a giant crack in it. They all heard Anxiety let out a sharp exhale, slowly forcing the crack to close. "Damage the legs and arms, rendering it useless!"
"Yes Sir!" "Yes Daddy!" The twins spoke in unison. Morality couldn't help hide an eyeroll at the Duke, but now was not the time to lecture him on his inappropriateness.
"Ready?" He asked, taking a breath. "GO!" He cried out, forcing the shield to burst outward, which made the golem fall back. Morality fell back at the force he used to push the golem back, Anxiety quick to Morality's side to heal him and boost his energy.
The second the shield went down, Prince took towards the right and Duke went left. They were in perfect sync, each summoning their sacred weapons, a paintbrush and a bolt of lightning respectively, charging forward and removing it's limbs.
Prince let out a loud cry, circling around the golem and fleeing the scene. The circle glowed green and vines, flowers, and even tree branches sprouted around it, quickly tying the golem up. The thing let out a loud, metallic screeching noise of distress, before the Duke acted.
He took the precious time where the golem was immobilized and used the pulsing thunderbolt in his hands to slice and dice it's arms and one leg off. The golem continued to shriek and cry out, thrashing around with it's one leg, until Morality came through.
He had moved forward, leaving Anxiety in the back to watch their back. He summoned a small shield, one that was a simple circular shape, save for the spikey thorns and notches in it. He threw it as hard as he could, watching as the killer frisbee cut halfway through a leg, rendering it a mostly useless, twitching lump to the golem.
It continued to try and get to the heroes, but it only managed to flop around uselessly. It was rather useless, slowly going still as it died.
"Fuck yeah!" Duke cheered, before letting out a choked cry as a large snake plunged through his chest. His eyes went wide and he coughed out a sickening mixture of spit and blood, slowly going down on his knees. He reached out, as if to beg for help, his body going still as the snake again plunged through him, tearing his throat in half. His mouth was moving as if attempting to speak, before he fell face down, poised in a silent scream.
Deceit stood behind him, wiping his gloves with a white cloth. It was covered in a layer of blood, but the cloth cleaned the majority off. He tossed it on the corpse, looking at the heroes, who were looking at them in a mixture of shock, fear, and horror.
It was broken as Morality let out an ear piercing shriek, followed by Prince crying out in absolute anguish.
"Remus!" He shrieked, struggling to breath and looking like he was moments away from fainting. "Oh gods, Jesus god WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU!?" He cried out, Patton's shrieking sobs becoming a dull noise to him as his rage filled. "I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU!"
He charged forward, unaware that the Golem was sliding painfully slowly towards Patton. He continued moving towards Janus, aiming punch after punch, kick after kick at the monster who murdered his brother. Deceit only dodged out of the way, not even bother to strike him.
Eventually, he ducked behind Prince, sweeping his legs out from under him. "Oh dear Princey, don't worry, you'll see him soon,"  Deceit purred, stomping on the hero's back, relishing in his shrieks of pain. "But look, here." He bent down, grabbing Prince by the hair and pulling his head up to make him look towards Morality.
Morality was on his knees sobbing. The golem was squirming closed to him, using it's half destroyed leg to slowly roll itself over. Roman was shrieking and begging Morality to do something, only to watch as Anxiety sailed past him, sprinting like his life depended on it. "No Virgil stop!" He begged, not wanting to lose two friends and his brother, he wasn't sure if his heart could take it.
Roman could only watch in horror as Virgil shoved Morality, the golem landing on top of the healer, crushing him to death. Roman let out a scream of pure anguish just as Logic began cackling with glee. He couldn't see Morality from behind the golem, but he was so sure that both of them were dead.
Logic danced around, watching the golem start to become consumed by rust. After it was fully rusted, it broke apart into dust, falling to the ground in large, clumpy piles. Even the limbs that were cut off were turned to dust as well. And Virgil? He was laying on the ground, flattened into a bloody clump of human and clothes. The lump didn't even look remotely human, but Prince found he couldn't look away, and he was glad he didn't.
There, next to what was Virgil, was Morality. He was alive and well, Roman hadn't lost everything! He went to call out, only to watch as Morality spit on Virgil's remains, climbing to his feet. "God, I can't believe he was that stupid. Though I suppose his foolish need to jump into bravery was admirable," he commented, brushing himself off. He reached down and grabbed something off of Virgil's remains, but Roman couldn't tell what it was.
Morality walked slowly, painfully slowly, over to Roman, who was confused. He let out a cry when his hair was let go and his face met painfully with the pavement. He ended up biting down on his tongue on the way down, causing his mouth to fill with a metallic tasting liquid. Blood, he thought distantly, but he wasn't able to comprehend it with how quickly his brain was shutting down.
He was rolled over, coming face to face with Morality. "P-Patton?" he croaked out, spitting up a glob of blood that got onto his pure white suit, or a suit that had been pure white. Now it was caked in dirty, boot prints, and even his own blood.
"Oh Princey, sweet sweet Roman," He cooed, brushing his thumb over Roman's cheek. "You're an absolute fool." Patton slowly held up the short sword, Virgil's short sword, pressing it against Roman's throat. He let out a soft whimper, unable to stop the noise from leaving his lips.
"Why?" He choked out, spitting a glob of blood onto Patton's suit. He saw his leader, former leader, cringe but shrug it off after a moment.
"I'm so tired of being treated like the innocent little healer on your team. I can't tell you how many times you've just left me to get captured, used me as bait...you even used me as a human shield once or twice instead of our actual shield, the guy who can make them out of thin air." He grabbed Roman by the chin, forcing the hero to meet his eyes. "I'm not meant to be bait or a human punching bag to protect you selfish lot. I am my own powerful person, stronger and better than all three of you worthless buffoons. I may have been your leader, but I was treated like trash by all three of you. But now....now that won't happen ever again!" Patton chirped, a bright cheery, but equally eerie, smile on his face.
Roman heard Deceit chuckle, looking away from Patton to watch as the villain walked towards the university, Logic right on his heels. He watched as Logic's lips moved quickly, mostly likely talking about whatever wicked plans he wanted to try on poor unsuspecting people.
"Don't take too long, darling!" Deceit called, loud enough for the pair to hear. “We need to get our plans into motion, we've already been set back quite a bit."
"Yes Deceit, I understand," Patton assured, looking back at Roman, who was petrified with fear. "I'm so sorry Roman, but this is your final scene. The curtains have been called and your act is through," he whispered, plunging the knife deep into Roman's chest.
Roman coughed up blood, reaching with one hand to try and pull it out to no avail.
Patton looked rather bored, but delighted at the same time. "This is goodbye Roman, I can't say I'll miss you or any of the others." He gave Roman a big smile, his deep brown eyes looking more golden as he twisted the knife that was lodged in Roman's chest, twisting it to cut deeper into the hero's body.
He felt Roman slowly going limp, the last few strings that he used to cling to life snapping as he let out his final breath. Patton shuddered in pleasure as he felt the man's last breath tickle his neck. He felt a rush, a thrill, he felt almost drunk on this feeling. He let a small grin cross his features, cackling as he pushed the corpse off him. Rising to his feet he felt a need, a deep hunger for more. He wanted more, he needed more of this feeling.
Patton licked his lips, groaning as the few stray drops of Roman's blood hit his taste buds. That felt good. So very, very good.
He brushed himself off, walking towards the University with a smile on his face. He had a mission after all, and world domination sounded just as glorious as crushing these pitiful heroes. Maybe more would come to play with them, that would be fun. If he were lucky, Deceit would let him keep one as a treat, a very special one just for him. Patton had to prove himself, and now that he was seen as an equal, he was never going to disappoint Deceit. He was going to show he earned his spot, and earn his spot he would.

Written for the Two sentence prompt -"Why don't you trust me Roman?" Patton asked tightening his grip on Roman's shirt. "P-Patton I-" Roman stuttered out fearfully.
A Mini’s Pep Talk -It shouldn’t surprise Roman, at this point, that on top of an already no good really really bad day he ends up getting attacked by another Side’s Mini-Me while looking for his own. (Takes place after SVS Redux)
The (K)nightmare -They say that the brain uses Dreams to help understand and solve problems one faces in the waking world.
Demon Comfort -Part 1  Part 2  Part 3 -Lurking under a Human’s bed should be downright dull for a Demon of Logan’s rank. And yet…he can’t help but be intrigued by his human charge.

Catch Me (If You Can) - Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 -Remy would not allow himself to be seen as needy and helpless in front of the general masses. He had an image to uphold. One of perfect health, snarky comebacks, and general sassiness. He didn’t get sick.
Beneath the Moon - Part 1  Part 2 Part 3 -After all the research he’d done, after all the signs he’d been experiencing. Logan needed someone to tell him he wasn’t crazy. And Roman…Roman had always been the one most likely to believe in the fantastical, the impossible, the…supernatural.
Hello Darkness (My Old ... Friend?) - Part 1  -Is it possible to search for something…for someone…when you don’t even remember that they’re missing?
Dance Break! -Roman suddenly jumped up, a sparkle in his eyes, as he turned, seeking out the first person he can find and holding out his hand. “Dance with me!” (Written with @kieraelieson)
Christmas Eve -Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  Part 4  Part 5 -Of all the barriers that Janus expected to have to overcome in order to get his son a pet for Christmas, encountering his Ex, Roman, working in the pet store had never once crossed his mind.
Code: Blanket -Part 1  Part 2 -A friendship doesn’t stop just because one person decides to act like a dick. Especially when said dick is obviously in trouble.
An Unconventional Defeat -Patton knew that heroes started out young, far younger than villains ever did. But this young?
Into the Fray -It wasn’t like he shouldn’t have expected this. It seemed like any plan involving him and Virgil had a tendency to well…go astray.
No Longer Alone -Growing up in isolation away from people has been all that Virgil’s ever known. That changes today.
A Restless Christmas Eve -Even if it had been five years since he’d appeared in the real world, this still felt like it should have been a Virgil problem and not a Deceit one. He’d never had issues staying asleep before. Let alone ending up wide awake, feeling like he needed to–to–just move. Get out. Because of a stupid storm.
Out Camping - Part 1  Part 2 -A Father and Son Camping Trip.

Strong As The Sun
Fandom: Sanders Sides
Ship: Romantic Prinxiety, Platonic Analogicality
Summary: It’s Roman’s last summer before going off to college; he should be spending it hanging out at the beach and having fun. Instead, he is wasting his time away beneath the eye of his cruel manager and behind the counter of the local fair’s Help Center. His day gets a little more interesting when Virgil Sanders collapses into his arms.
Warnings (in order of strength): Moderate language throughout, Description of physical illness throughout, Not panic but Virgil does get pretty upset a couple times. Please tell me if anything needs to be added.  Genre: Fluff, Hurt/Comfort, Human AU
A/N: -The Dragon Witch is Ms. Drakon -Because of his anxiety, Virgil clings to ‘comfort items’ (in this case, his hoodie) And lastly: I am not a medical professional!! This is all based on my own experiences with heat exhaustion and may not be entirely accurate. If you are ever in a situation like this, don’t be like Roman! Get some help!  Hope you enjoy! Love you all 🖤✨

Roman couldn’t put his finger on the reason he loved his job so much. Maybe it was the suffocating heat that made him sweat so much his hair was consistently ruined by the end of every shift. Or maybe it was the entitled older folks who would yell at him for doing what his manager told him to do. It could have been the way his manager yelled at him for... doing exactly what she had told him to do. The best part was definitely the smell- a magical combination of cheap grease, sunscreen, animal waste, and a good amount of human waste.
Yeah, ok, his job sucked. Standing at the help desk of a local fair for 12 hours everyday was not exactly Roman’s ideal summer plan. It was his last summer before college; he should be getting toned from surfing at the beach all day where he would inevitably find his dream man and they would live happily ever after.
“Roman?! Did you hear a word I just said?”
Roman jerked his head up from where it had been resting in his hand (the perfect position for daydreaming himself away from this hell) and tried to look alert, “Yeah, sure! Of course!”
His manager scowled at him from across the counter. She looked like what would have happened if Snow White had made some sort of pact with the evil witch- sickly pale skin, blood red lips, and smooth black hair that never had a strand out of place. She tapped her nails against the desk and raised one perfectly manicured eyebrow, “Well, in that case, could you repeat it to me?”
“No, Ms. Drakon,” Roman hung his head, hoping his pathetic act would earn him some crumb of pity.
His manager just rolled her eyes, turning around and glaring at him over her shoulder, “I was saying you need to do a better job of looking enthusiastic- more ready to help. If you don’t, well just remember: there are plenty of other desperate teenagers who will easily take your place.”
The witch stalked away, stopping occasionally to bare her teeth at patrons in substitute of an actual smile. Roman barely resisted the urge to flip her off but decided it wasn’t worth the risk. He was positive at this point that she had eyes in the back of her head.
He sighed, rubbing his eyes and standing up straighter in an attempt to look more “enthusiastic”- or at least awake. Drakon might have been the epitome of evil, but she was right. It would be as easy as snapping her fingers to have Roman fired and replaced. And that was not something he could afford- literally.
Roman shoved the thoughts aside as a family walked up. He saw so many of the same groups over and over again that they all started to blend together. This one was no different- a loud, angry straight couple surrounded by a horde of unruly children.
The man slammed his fist down on the counter as he approached and Roman plastered on a smile, “Hi sir! How can I help you?”
Yep. Today was going to be fun. It was only noon and he had already a) gotten puked on by a little kid, b) had nearly been fired, and now c) yelled at because apparently the carnival games were arranged incorrectly and it was somehow his fault.
Roman spent the next two hours trying not to space out but it was so hard when he wanted to be anywhere else. He decided he was never going to a fair ever again. Ever. Unless it was with a boyfriend. Who he would win a bunch of prizes for. And take selfies with while they ate matching cotton candy. And they would ride the Ferris wheel together and kiss at the top. Hmmmm, so maybe he would never go to a fair ever again unless certain requirements were met.
If only his Prince Charming could come along now, jump over the desk partition, reach for Roman’s hand, and whisk him away to some place that had air conditioning. He would be tall, muscular, with a strong jawline, and-
“Excuse me?”
Roman glanced down, trying to find the kid who was trying to get his attention.
“Up here?”
He moved his gaze upwards to find a guy about his age wearing a dark hoodie with his hands shoved in his pockets. Not surprisingly, he looked like he was dying from the heat.
“Oh sorry. I thought you were,” Roman waved his hand at his knee, “small.”
The stranger grimaced, “Gonna try not to be insulted by that.”
“Anyways... how can I help you?” Even though the statement was built into Roman’s subconscious script, he really did mean it. The boy kept swaying and Roman wasn’t sure if it was some kind of nervous fidget or because he was actually about to pass out.
“Yeah. Right. Sorry. I’m just kinda- my head-“ He ran his hands through his hair, “Basically I lost my group and my phone is dead and I have no idea where they are and-“
He tried to take a step forward but stumbled, gripping the desk for support. Roman’s protective instincts kicked in immediately. He swung open the little shack’s gate and began leading the boy back to the shade of the awning, one arm swung around his chest to support him.
“I’m fine, really,” He tried to protest but used Roman as crutch as if this was A Christmas Carole and he was Tiny Tim.
Roman snorted as he latched the gate shut behind them, “You’re not ‘fine’- you can barely walk.”
Roman set the boy down on the rough floors, concerned by how hard he was breathing. He grabbed a water bottle from beneath the counter and offered it as he squatted down. This close, Roman was able to get a better evaluation his guest.
The good news: the heavy darkness beneath his eyes was eyeshadow- not some sort of bruise or dark circles that were so bad they could be seen from three feet away. The bad news: basically everything else. His breathing was labored. His face was deathly pale- nearly gray- and beaded with sweat. His black skinny jeans, heavy boots, and oversized purple hoodie were ideal for perhaps a light rain in mid October; at a fair during the sadistic month of July, the outfit looked nearly deadly.
Roman chewed the bottom of his lip. He really wasn’t trained for this sort of thing. His job was to look cute at the entrance and tell people where they could find the petting zoo. But he couldn’t just turn this guy away, “Look, you can stay here as long as you need but if my boss sees you, I’m dead so just try to stay low or something.”
The boy had been gulping down the water bottle but froze suddenly. His eyes widened and he started scrambling to get up. His feet scrabbled beneath him like a puppy who wasn’t used to their legs yet.
“Hey, hey, stop!” Roman hissed under his breath, trying to avoid making a scene, “What are you doing?”
“I don’t want you to get in trouble. It’s better if I just go,” The boy stopped struggling and stared at Roman with eyes the size of a small planet. They were blue, so deep and dark they almost looked purple. Beneath them, the messy eyeshadow was smudged by what Roman realized were tear streaks.
“Shut up, Emo. I’m not going to let you leave until I know it’s safe,” Roman reached out, brushing his thumb across the boy’s cheekbones to wipe away the dark trails the makeup had made.
The boy looked confused but didn’t try to duck away from Roman’s touch, “What are you doing?”
Roman drew his hand back and stared down at it. He felt just as confused as the boy looked. What was he doing? He huffed out a laugh, “I- I’m not sure. I don’t think either of us are thinking very clearly right now.”
Across from him, the boy bowed his head down so Roman couldn’t see his face and started drinking from the bottle again- less desperately this time. Roman got the feeling the conversation was over.
He stood up and shifted so he was more centered at the desk, “I have to look like I’m actually doing my job, but tell me if you need anything. Try to, uh, cool off or something. I’ve got plenty of water bottles over here.”
“Virgil.”
“I’m sorry?” Roman turned to face the shadow of a human in the corner of his shack. The boy was trying to take up less space, but his  lanky legs made it hard to curl up.
“My name is Virgil.”
Roman smiled, “Nice to meet you, Virgil. I’m Roman.”
Virgil nodded as if Roman had given the correct answer and was allowed to go back to his job.
The next hour passed sluggishly. Roman told six separate women asked where the bathrooms were but he could swear they were all the exact same person. He saw the girl who ran the lemonade stand spit into a drink at least twice. At some point, Virgil fell asleep, the back of his head pressed against the gate and his neck bent at an angle that would probably hurt when he woke up. His breathing was still a worrying rasp and Roman couldn’t help but glance over towards Virgil’s corner whenever he got the chance.
Three o’clock rolled in like it didn’t want to come. Roman slammed down his sign that read “I’m On Break Right Now!! I’ll Be Back In A Few Minutes :)” and dared the Karen who was marching toward his stand to take another step forward.
When he was sure the coast was clear, he ducked onto the floor and grabbed another water bottle as he scooted next to Virgil. This close, Roman could feel tremors that were running through Virgil’s body.
“Hey buddy, wake up,” Roman shook Virgil’s shoulders gently, wincing at the heat that radiated through the thick sweatshirt.
Virgil’s eyes blinked open slowly, glassy and unfocused. He searched around the small space before his gaze settled on Roman, “Where am- oh that’s right. I’m still here?”
Roman couldn’t explain it but something about the venomous disappointment in Virgil’s voice hit him in the chest. He shook the feeling away quickly when he remembered what was going on, “You’re burning up. I want you to drink some more water. And I think you’re going to need to take off that sweatshirt.”
Virgil collapsed in on himself, wrapping his arms around his chest and pressing himself against the side of the shack, “I don’t want to take it off.”
Roman could feel his eyebrows scrunching together by their own accord, “Why not?”
Virgil just shrugged and looked away which perfectly conveyed the message of I know exactly why and I’m not going to tell you.
“Ok, ok, whatever. It’s not like that stupid hoodie is seriously damaging your health or anything.”
Virgil flopped his head to the side to glare with two ice-cold flames. Roman got the feeling that if Virgil had more strength, he would’ve gotten slapped.
Roman pinched the bridge of his nose, searching for options. It’s not like he could force Virgil to take the sweatshirt off- that would be weird for anyone. Besides, he still hardly knew this kid. Maybe he refused to take the hoodie off because he had some giant tattoo from a gang. Did gangs get tattoos? Like the dark mark from Harry Potter? Roman was getting sidetracked and Virgil looked like the type of person who rarely left his house. Ok so definitely not the type to join a gang.
But the fact that they hardly knew each other still stood. If he pushed it too far, he would be crossing about twenty boundaries. On the other hand, Virgil was looking worse and worse by the second. In the space of a few blinks, his expression had faded from a glare to half-lidded stupor.
Roman grimaced as he pressed the back of his hand against Virgil’s forehead. His bangs were damp and his skin felt like a hot pan just off the stove. Roman brushed his hand upwards, combing his fingers through Virgil’s hair.
Virgil’s gaze flicked over to meet Roman’s eyes, unfocused and filmy. But within those eyes, swimming in the purple beneath, Roman could see so much emotion, it almost hurt to look at.  Those eyes pleaded with him, so full of fear.
Roman sighed. He simply couldn’t say no that stare, “Yeah ok. You can keep the damn thing on. But we need to figure out a way to get your fever down.”
Virgil slumped sideways into Roman, pressing into him instead of the wall. The chills running through his body were so strong that Roman almost wondered if they were contagious somehow. He snuggled further against Roman, his head pressing into Roman’s shoulder.
Roman didn’t know what to do. What he wanted to do was wrap his arms around this strange little shadow and never let go. In reality, though, even this much contact was probably worsening Virgil’s temperature.
“Hey,” Roman shook Virgil’s far shoulder slightly to get his attention, “I had an idea. Would you be ok with just unzipping your hoodie? You wouldn’t have to take it off!”
Virgil responded by wrapping himself around Roman’s arm like some baby marsupial, “Too tired. Just wanna sleep.”
Roman could hardly hear Virgil’s muttering through the material of his own shirt. He sighed, “Yeah. Well too bad. Will you please just keep yourself from dying?”
“Ti-r-ed,” Virgil drew out the vowels like a whiny little kid.
“What- do you want me to do it?” Roman huffed out an exasperated laugh.
Against him, he felt Virgil shrug, “Sure.”
“Oh,” Roman hadn’t been expecting that answer. He had asked as a joke after all. Virgil had made such a big deal about keeping the sweatshirt on that Roman felt that he was crossing a line by even touching it.
Roman untangled Virgil’s arms for his and propped him against the wall. The boy moved as if he were a rag doll in Roman’s hands and it was nearly enough make Roman queasy. He scooted over so he was facing Virgil.
He watched him with those big eyes. Big, soft eyes. They carried so much uncertainty, always tracking Roman’s movement without ever shifting their gaze. But they held the weight of trust as well- feeling safe despite not knowing what Roman was going to do. Roman glowed under the trust, feeling like he had been awarded a treasure few could even find. At the same time, he was positive he didn’t deserve it. He didn’t know if he was doing the right things. How could Virgil seem so certain that Roman would help him if even Roman didn’t know that?
Roman reached forward, hands freezing as they hovered over the zipper that hung just below the dip of Virgil’s collarbone. This was weird. He knew these were “special circumstances” but still... it was weird. Roman cleared his throat, “Uh, sorry, this is just kind of awkward.”
Virgil mustered another glare, less deadly this time but still managing to clearly convey the message of Stop being such a useless gay.
Roman cleared his throat again. He probably sounded like he was developing a case of pneumonia, “Right. Sorry.”
Said useless gay took a deep breath and pulled the zipper down. Underneath, Virgil was wearing a plain black muscle tank to match the rest of his dark outfit. Roman had to give him credit for committing so strongly to the aesthetic. A part of him was still surprised that Virgil’s hoodie wasn’t hiding some kind of green alien body.
“Surprised I’m not some kind of green alien?”
Roman realized he had been staring and immediately tried to find something else to look at. His brain apparently decided that the best solution was to reread the safety rules posted on the back wall. He could feel a blush rising to his face and he was pretty sure it had something to do with the way the tank top dipped lowly across Virgil’s chest and hung across his delicate collarbones.
Roman nearly started laughing at himself out loud. He sounded like a repressed Victorian maiden. What he going to do next? Maybe he would stomp his feet and start chanting Show me your ankle! Show me your ankle!
“Hey, help me with this?” Virgil’s strained voice brought Roman’s attention swinging back to the real world. He was trying to shrug the sweatshirt off his shoulders while still trying to move as little as possible.
Roman reached out again, probably too quickly. He was acting so strange. He wished his hands would stop shaking so much.
“Oh, Roman?” A sugar-sweet, poisoned voice floated into the shack just as Roman managed to get the last sleeve past Virgil’s elbow.
“Shit,” Roman hissed under his breath, “That’s my manager.”
Virgil’s eyes went wide but Roman didn’t have the time to reassure him. He threw the nearest thing over Virgil which happened to be a beach towel from the lost and found. It probably wouldn’t help his temperature at all, but at least Ms. Drakon wouldn’t see him.
Roman pulled out his winning grin as he stood up, “Why, hello, Ms. Drakon!”
She responded with an equally bright mouthful, but Roman wouldn’t dare to call it a smile, “Roman, it seems you have quite a crowd beginning to build up!”
He glanced over and suppressed a groan as he saw the trail of unhappy looking people that glared at him from an ever-growing line. He turned his attention back to Drakon, pointing down to the sign propped on the counter, “Yes, ma’am, I see that. I will make sure that they are all satisfied as soon as my break is over.”
Her eyes wrinkled as her mouth widened, but there was nothing friendly about them, “I think you’ve been on break long enough.”
“Yes, of course!” In Roman’s head, a large anvil had just landed on Drakon’s head.
Drakon disappeared into the crowd and Roman turned to the daunting line in front of him. The snake was headed by a group of 12 year old girls. They were easiest type to deal with. Bless their boyband obsessed hearts- they were probably the only reason the counter hadn’t been broken down by a mob of angry middle aged women with expired passes. He gave them a wink, “I’ll be with you ladies in a minute.”
Judging by the giggles that erupted as he sank down behind the counter, he had bought himself a minute or two.
“Hey there,” Roman was trying to be quiet but he was surprised at how soft his voice came out.
He pulled the towel away to find Virgil fast asleep. His breath was definitely starting to even out. The stupid hoodie pooled around him, still attached at the wrists. A tiny hint of a smile tugged at one side of his lips.
Roman ruffled his hands through Virgil’s hair, “Hang in there, buddy.”
He twirled around as he stood up, adding a little more dramatic flair than needed. He flicked the sign down with one finger. The smile he beamed at the crowd was genuine; this time he had something to smile about- even if he wasn’t quite sure what it was.
Another hour passed by with all of the ease of a root canal. A person told him they wanted a discount because their child had found a dead rat in a trash can. Roman tried to explain that it was a good thing it was in a trash can instead of anywhere else. The lemonade girl flipped someone off. She was Roman’s hero.
Virgil only began stirring by the end of it, blinking his eyes open like a owl in daylight. He looked around the shack like he was seeing it for the first time. His eyes were sharper than Roman had seen them before, glittering like obsidian now that they could focus.
Roman tried his best to concentrate on the customer in front of him, but he kept glancing back and grinning at Virgil. It was nice to see him looking more like a human and less like a very unhealthy zombie.
For what seemed like an eternity and a half, the customer refused to leave. Finally Roman made an under-the-table deal consisting of extra arcade tickets and a free voucher for lemonade just to get rid of them. He hoped the lemonade got spat in.
“Coast clear?” Virgil’s small voice came from what Roman had officially began calling Virgil’s Corner. He sounded different- probably because he wasn’t fighting for his life. His voice was still low, but the gravel in his tone sounded far more intentional and less like Holy shit I can’t breathe.
Roman turned around and leaned against the counter, “Ah! Sleeping Beauty awakes! How are you feeling?”
“Would I sound ungrateful if I said I feel like shit?”
Roman made an exaggerated act of thinking about it, “Just a little bit. But also honest.”
Virgil nodded and then looked down at the ground, letting a beat of silence fall between them. Roman got the feeling that Virgil had something to say, but they both had to wait for it to arrive.
Virgil began pulling the hoodie back up around his hunched shoulders, eyes still burning holes through the floor of the stall.
“Hey, hey, hey,” Roman sunk down to the floor, “Don’t put that thing back on. I just got you breathing right again- don’t make us start over from square one.”
He placed his hand against Virgil’s forehead again, “You still feel kinda overheated to me so-“
Roman stopped speaking as Virgil flinched away from the touch. His eyes darted around as if they couldn’t find a single safe place to land. He pulled his arms and legs in, tense and ready to- to do what, though? He looked like he wanted to hide, and run, and fight all at the same time. Virgil had quickly transformed into a cornered wild animal.
“Virgil, what’s wrong?” Roman spoke as softly and slowly as he could but tension was mounting within him as well. Had he done something wrong? Was Virgil hurt?
“They didn’t ask about me, did they?” Virgil spoke as if he didn’t want is voice to be heard.
“I’m sorry, who didn’t ask about you?”
“My group. The ones I came with. They both wear glasses and have brown hair and one’s shorter than the other and the taller one has freckles and was wearing a black button down and the other was wearing a blue shirt and- and,” Virgil’s voice broke and Roman’s heart along with it, “-and they’re my best friends.”
Suddenly Roman remembered the reason Virgil had shown up at his desk in the first place. It wasn’t the heat exhaustion- he had gotten lost.
Virgil succeeded in wrapped himself up in his sweatshirt. He curled into a tight ball, knees pulled against his chest and eyes just barely peeking above top of them.
“Hey, well, they’re probably looking around the fair for you. A lot of people don’t even know about my dumb little shack here! They’ll turn up eventually.”
Virgil shook his head, “They wouldn’t even look for me. They’ve probably left by now.”
“I really don’t think-“
Roman was cut off by Virgil launching himself onto him, wrapping his arms like a vice around Roman’s chest and digging his face into Roman’s shoulder. Shuddering sobs wracked Virgil’s body, all the panic and pain of today running onto Roman’s shoulder and staining his shirt with dark eyeshadow.
But Roman wasn’t thinking about that. He was hardly thinking at all. Roman was angry. Maybe angrier than he had ever been at that Drakon bitch or any of the customers that screamed at him or the kids who threw things at him or the teenagers who would snicker just loud enough so that he could hear them. That was trivial.
He was so mad. Mad at the pigs who stranded Virgil on his own, who apparently didn’t give a shit about his wellbeing, who made him feel so worthless that his immediate assumption was that they had left him behind.
Roman hoped they showed up. He would rip them to pieces.
He wrapped one arm around Virgil as tightly as he could and cradled the back of his head with his other hand. He didn’t want to let go; he wouldn’t let go. Roman could feel Virgil’s nails digging into his back as he gripped Roman’s shirt in fists.
Roman began rocking gently back and forth, moving his fingers through Virgil’s hair and letting his nails scratch softly against his scalp. Soon, Virgil’s sobs subsided into smaller hiccups. Roman could still feel hot tears soaking through his shirt.
They stayed huddled on the floor for a good minute before Virgil slowly raised his head, “I’m sorry, sometimes I get-“
“Hey, don’t be sorry,” Roman ran his thumb across Virgil’s cheek, brushing away the tears that ran down it. Like this, Virgil’s eyes looked ethereal, two pools of pure enchantment. Roman was sure he could spend the rest of his life memorizing the way the sunlight play against them.
“Excuse me?”
“Shit, shit, shit, damn it,” Roman knew he should have put his do not disturb sign up.
Virgil jerked his head up, “Patton?!”
Roman looked up to see another teenager about his age leaning over the counter. He was wearing glasses and a blue T-shirt with the Humane Society logo.
His face melted into a relieved smile as Virgil stood up, “Thank goodness we found you- we’ve been looking everywhere.”
He wrapped Virgil in a hug as yet another teenager appeared. He was taller, with eyes nearly as dark as Virgil’s, and he looked like he might sit down and begin discussing taxes with you at any moment.
This one nodded, “I created a systematic search pattern to use. Unfortunately, we were not even made aware of this place until a rather rude young lady at the lemonade stand directed us over here.”
The one called Patton let go of Virgil just long enough for the other to give him a quick hug before grabbing him into another embrace, “Oh we were so worried.”
Roman felt a pang in his chest. This was good, right? Virgil was safe now. And obviously his friends weren’t  the monsters Roman had assumed them to be. So it was all good. Yep. Definitely. Totally. Then why did he feel so damn sad?
“Yeah, yeah, I’m ok,” Roman looked up to see Virgil wiping off his face as the other two fussed over him, “I wouldn’t be though if it weren’t for Roman.”
The more serious one raised an eyebrow, “Who?”
Roman rose up from the ground, feeling sheepish for a reason he couldn’t explain, “Uh, that would be me.”
“Logan, Patton, this is Roman,” Virgil glanced over and gave him a warm smile, “He helped me out in more ways than one.”
Patton pulled Roman into a squeeze, wrapping his arms around his neck in a way that made Roman bend down, “Thank you so, so much.”
Logan took a moment from talking to Virgil in a tone to stare at Roman, “You got him to take off his hoodie?”
Roman escaped from Patton’s reach, “Uh, well, I think he kind of had heat exhaustion-“
Logan turned his attention back to Virgil, “But you don’t take that thing off unless you’re very comfortable with someone or-“
“Or really like them. Yeah, I know,” Virgil stared at the floor, a bright red rising to his face.
“Oh,” Roman wasn’t sure what else to say. He could feel a blush as deep as Virgil’s tinting his complexion.
Logan looked down at a watch wrapped around his wrist, “Thank you for helping our friend, but we really must be going now.”
“Right. Yes. Of course,” Roman nodded, trying to clear his head. The implications of what Logan had said were quickly replaced by gloom.
Roman hoped the sadness sitting in he’s chest like a lead weight didn’t carry into his voice. He swung open the gate and tried for a smile as Virgil stepped past him.
Roman watched as Virgil stepped down into the dirt, probably the last time he was ever going to see him. Roman almost let him get away. Almost.
“Hey, wait!” Roman leaned out and grabbed Virgil’s hand. He reached for his pocket and waved his phone, “Could I get your number?”
Virgil’s jaw dropped, “You had a phone this entire time?!”
Roman blinked dumbly at Virgil as realization hit him, “Oh my god, I did.”
Virgil looked off into the distance as if he  couldn’t process Roman’s lack of brain cells. At long last he began laughing. It started off as a snicker, developing into a full on cackle and finally dissolving into a wheeze. It was one of the ugliest laughs Roman had ever heard and some of the sweetest music he’d ever listened to. Virgil straightened up from where he had collapsed with his hands on his knees, “Oh my god; you’re so stupid.”
Roman felt his heart drop, “So that’s a no?”
“I didn’t say that either,” Virgil took a step forward and snatched the phone from Roman’s still out-stretched hand.
He gave it back after a few seconds of quick typing and seemed to be about to walk away, but froze, staring intensely at something on Roman’s shirt.
“What is it?” Roman craned his neck to find what Virgil was looking at.
“Well you’ve got something,” Virgil leaned forward, poking his hand against Roman’s chest for a moment before brushing it upwards and flicking Roman in the nose, “Right there.”
Before Roman hand a chance to react, Virgil had turned on his heel and was jogging to catch up with his two companions who were chatting at the gate. He watched as the group headed away, focusing on the purple hoodie in the middle until they turned a corner and Roman couldn’t stare anymore.
Heat still beat down from the summer sky, but Roman was sure that the warmth radiating from his chest could rival any sun.

ao3: “still standing” rating: T warnings: supernatural au, blood, food, cheating implication (but no actual cheating), remus typical stuff, sympathetic deceit, sympathetic remus, dukeceit genre: angst with a happy ending description: Sometimes the best present is each other. And perhaps a Milkbone? (written for @timelesstragedy as part of sanders sides secret santa 2019 ♡) (beta’ed by the amazing TheLittleTrashCat)
It's getting late, Dee frets, shoving his hands in his coat pockets and wandering down the sidewalk, eyes scanning the busy shops for any sign of his boyfriend. Snowflakes lazily spiral down from a slate grey sky, nestling in the soft wool of his yellow hat, knitted by his friend, Patton. It's a little clumsy, but Dee treasures it.
He also treasures the lack of sun right about now. The stories are, in the whole, wrong (he has no issue with garlic, for instance, and the profusion of selfies on his phone shoot down the pernicious idea that he can't see his own reflection), but the sun certainly doesn't do him any favors. He doesn't burst into flames or anything as dramatic as that, but it does weaken him. And a lack of energy does not bode well when it comes to dealing with his boyfriend.
Speaking of Remus, Christmas is fast approaching and Dee still has no idea what to get him. Nothing that springs to mind feels worthy of the greatest gift to ever stumble into Dee's life. He knows that a lot of people are put off by Remus. They find him abrasive, crude, and obnoxious. Gross, even, by his sense of humor and lack of personal boundaries. But Dee knows he's trying, he really is, and what's wrong with a little exuberance and curiosity? No one else in his life has ever dragged him out of bed at three in the morning to go pelt stray students with open packets of barbecue sauce (they almost got caught by campus police and Dee nearly forgot in his panic to run like a normal human would, not putting on a preternatural burst of speed).
His tongue absently swipes across one of his fangs (dismissed as an unusually sharp canine tooth) as he finally catches a glimpse of Remus, talking animatedly to a mall Santa who looks like he's just clocked out for the day. The mall Santa has a dazed look on his face under the fake white beard. A common occurrence for strangers meeting Remus for the first time, Dee thinks in amusement as he sidles their way.
"-and personally, I think frog spawn makes a great gift," Dee hears as he picks his way across a thin scrim of ice. Remus turns his head, catching sight of Dee, and his whole face lights up.
"Dee Dee!" He exclaims, abandoning the mall Santa without a second thought. "There you are!" As if he's not the one who ran off in the first place.
"Here I am," Dee agrees. The wind is cold suddenly, biting into his exposed skin and making the birthmark that covers one half of his face ache. He still doesn't know why it does that. Perhaps it is a side effect of his vampiric status? It certainly never did it before, or perhaps he never paid enough attention. "Are you ready to go?"
"For now," Remus says. "What next?"
"We're meeting up with Virgil, aren't we?" Dee asks, surprised by the cloud that sweeps briefly over Remus's face. "Is something the matter?"
"No," Remus denies. It's a lie, but Dee doesn't want to push it. Remus will tell him when he wants to tell him and until then, he'll clam up, stubborn as any old hard-headed mule.
Virgil waits for them at the smoothie shop- surprisingly still busy, despite the icy weather. He stands out amongst the festive shoppers, clad in purple and black like a gloomy storm cloud. Purple-dyed hair falls over one eye and black eyeshadow swoops beneath both eyes. He smiles when he sees Dee and Remus, standing up from the tiny table he'd ensconced himself.
"Hey," Virgil greets. "Did you get everything you wanted?"
"Not quite," Dee admits, rueful. "It's so hard to buy for this one." He nudges Remus playfully. "I want to buy him the moon and stars, but sadly, they aren't for sale."
"Ask Logan," Virgil jokes. Logan is the neighborhood librarian, and he is more obsessed with astronomy than any person Dee has ever met.
"Buy me a human skull," Remus suggests, his eyes glittering with suppressed laughter. "Ooh, better yet, Dee Dee, just get me a human skull! A fresh one!"
"I'd rather not end up in prison," Dee says, laughing. "But there's a macabre idea. I like it."
"Want a smoothie?" Virgil asks. Dee nods.
"Nah," Remus says, stuffing his hands in his pockets. His shopping bags dangle from his elbows. Virgil wanders up to the counter and Dee takes a seat, sighing as the weight is lifted from his feet.
"Are you still going out with Virgil later?" Remus asks abruptly. Dee nods.
"Present shopping," he lies. In reality, he and Virgil are fang buddies (although he's told Virge more than once never to utter that phrase again), and they need to go and feed.
"Oh," Remus says, his face clearing a little. "Okay."
"Here you go," Virgil says, arriving breathless, his cheeks flushed. He presses a berry smoothie into Dee's hands, sipping on his own mango one. Dee takes a happy sip, offering the straw to his boyfriend. Remus regards it for a moment, then takes a noisy slurp, his cheeks hollowing out.
"Leave some for me," Dee jokes. Remus's eyes sparkle as he swallows his mouthful of ice cold smoothie, before pain creases his forehead.
"Smoothie headache," he says, his voice creaky.
"Press your tongue to the roof of your mouth," Virgil advises. "I think it's supposed to help." Remus looks dubious, but does it anyway. Moments later, relief floods his face. Dee brushes a few strands of his unruly hair out of his face, fingers sliding through the grey streak in front. Remus won't admit if he's dyed it or if it's a stroke of luck that it's all centered in one or two locks of hair (although Dee's money is on Remus dyeing it).
They start the long trek home not long after, Virgil trailing after them. Dee is acutely aware of the other vampire's presence, even as he makes small talk with his boyfriend. He reaches over and snags some of the bags Remus is juggling, purely to grasp the chance to hold Remus's hand. Remus's slow growing smile is a reward in and of itself, and it makes precious warmth bloom in his chest.
"Love you," Dee murmurs, just loud enough for Remus to hear. Red stains Remus's cheeks, climbing up his neck, and Dee smiles in satisfaction.
"You little-" Remus cuts himself off abruptly.
Virgil's phone rings behind them, disturbing the moment.
"Sorry to interfere in your homosexual love affair, guys," Virgil says dryly. "But I gotta take this. It's Patton." He slows further, mumbling into the phone until Dee can't hear him very well.
Patton is a mutual friend who just so happens to be a werewolf. You would never know it, though, looking at his sunny exterior, Dee muses. Slightly chubby, spattered with freckles, and always smiling, he doesn't exactly fit the 'look.' Then again, Dee doesn't really look like a vampire, does he?
Now Virgil, he really looks the part, a brooding emo with purple-dyed hair and a perpetually black wardrobe. People used to jokingly call him a vampire in high school. They never knew how much it hurt him. Maybe it shouldn't have, Virgil told him one night, as they sat on the roof of the school and watched the moon come up. But it did, anyway.
I could hurt them, he remembers Virgil saying, sprawled out over the roof. I could really, really hurt them. Bet they wouldn't make fun of me then.
But you won't, Dee had said, with utter certainty.
No, Virgil had admitted. I won't.
Remus slides an arm around Dee's waist, pulling him free of his reverie.
"Do you have to go so soon?" He whines, licking Dee's ear. Dee scrunches his face.
"Don't do that," he says, laughing. "And I don't have to leave quite yet."
"Good," Remus says smugly, just as Virgil catches back up, stuffing his phone in his pocket.
"Patton wants to join our quest," Virgil says. "If that's okay with you, Dee." What looks like relief passes over Remus's face as Dee nods and he wonders why.
"Fine by me," he says. He knows what Virgil really means. Patton has found a willing blood donor this time.
"Here we are," Dee says, stopping by the walk up to their apartment. "See you in a little while, Virge."
"See you!" He says, giving a short flap of his fingers and continuing on, shoulders hunched.
"I'm going to find you the best Christmas present in the whole world," Dee tells his boyfriend, as they start up the stairs. Remus looks wistfully at him.
"I just need you, Dee Dee," he says. "You know that, right?"
Dee doesn't know what to say to that.
-----
Remus watches his boyfriend continue up the steps, too low to even give his customary salacious wink and wiggle. It's a sign of how preoccupied Dee must be that he doesn't notice. He hopes that it's purely because of what Dee said, he's trying to come up with the perfect Christmas present (Remus himself has long since given up on the idea of perfection). But he can't help but fret there's a more sinister undertone, one that he desperately doesn't want to think about.
It's just your intrusive thoughts, he tries to convince himself, as Dee unlocks their front door and ushers him inside, shopping bags banging against his side. It must be just his intrusive thoughts. Dee wouldn't do something like that, would he? Not with their friend, Virgil.
But he's been friends with Virgil a lot longer than he's been boyfriends with Remus. And they're always hanging out. Dee never outright excludes him, but after a long life in his brother Roman's shadow, Remus knows when he's not wanted.
But Patton will be there, he argues with himself, taking his shopping to put up in the back of the closet, where Dee can't reach without a step stool. He's always been a little persnickety about his short stature, but Remus has to admit it has its uses right about now.
Unless Patton is in on it-
But no. Not even his intrusive thoughts can believe that. The same goes for Logan, the librarian who's so much fun to tease when he gets all prickly. He knows all the cool books about cephalopods, though, so Remus doesn't tease him too much. Besides, if he does, Roman will find out and he's taken great pains to distance himself from his brother.
It's not that he doesn't like Roman. He does. They're twins, after all. But Roman is-
Well, it feels like Roman is everything that Remus is not. Roman is good. Valiant. A prince. Human.
Remus winces as his own thoughts remind him of the monster he transforms into, every full moon. He keeps his human mind when he transforms, but somehow, that's almost worse.
Sometimes he wishes his brother shared it. Other times, he's relieved that Roman, at least, gets to be normal. He knows, of course. It would have been pretty hard growing up otherwise. But it's always been impressed into both twins that it's a family secret. Not even Dee knows, and Remus kind of hates himself for it. Dee isn't hiding some earth-shattering secret like being a werewolf-
No, instead you're just freaking out that he's cheating on you and you don't even have the balls to ask him straight up what's going on. He winces, returning to the living room, where Dee has sprawled out on the sofa, winter coat folded over the arm.
"You all right?" Dee asks, his brows crinkling in concern.
"Never better, Sir Hiss a Lot!" Remus chirps, lying through his teeth. "Just a little tired, that's all." He flops dramatically next to Dee on the couch, hand splayed over his eyes.
"Alas, poor Yorick, I knew him well," Dee says, deadpan. "Are you going to take a nap then? When I leave?"
"Yeah, probably," Remus says, letting his arm flop to one side. He turns his face aside, avoiding the truth.
He intends on napping. That much is true. But he also knows that curiosity is burning like a trash fire, deep in his belly, and he can't guarantee that he won't try his hand at a bit of espionage. He used to follow his brother around all the time when they were kids, and Roman never suspected a thing.
"Okay," Dee says, cuddling into his side and basking in his warmth. He feels cold and Remus yanks him closer, wrapping a warm arm around his boyfriend and breathing in the soft scent of Dee's shampoo.
There's nothing going on. He's sure of it, he thinks, relief sagging his shoulders. There is no way that Dee can cuddle him so lovingly and have something going on the side. He knows his boyfriend.
But he thinks maybe he'll follow Dee, anyway. Just for the practice.
-----
"Sleep well, my little cephalopod," Dee murmurs, kissing Remus's forehead. His boyfriend whines, clutching at him, and for a moment, he's tempted to text Virgil and tell him that he can't come after all.
But no, it's been too long since he last fed, and it's hard enough to line up willing donors as it is. He feels like an ass when their only option is a blood bank (as funny as it is to think of a vampire stabbing their teeth into a bag of blood like a Capri Sun), but he refuses to feed from someone who's not willing.
Virgil's waiting outside, his hands shoved in the pockets of his hoodie.
"Remus is gonna take a nap," Dee greets him. "Do you think maybe I should tell him on Christmas?"
"If you want to," Virgil says, pushing his hair out of his eyes. "I don't think that he'd freak out."
"I don't think so, either," Dee says. He bites his lower lip in thought. "I just- What if he doesn't believe me? What if he does and wants to break up with me?"
"What if you're borrowing trouble when there is none?" Virgil counters. Dee laughs shakily.
"All right, good point," he acknowledges. "So, where's Patton and this mystery donor, anyway?"
"The library," Virgil says. "Patton reserved a conference room."
"Only Pat," Dee murmurs, with a laugh. "Afterwards, I still need to buy Remus a Christmas present." He sighs. "I hope Logan and Pat have some ideas, because I am clueless."
"Have you asked his brother?" Virgil asks. Dee looks at him in surprise.
"You know, I still haven't managed to meet him?" Dee says. "Remus always has an excuse."
"I've only met him a couple times when he's hung out with Pat," Virgil says. "But I think he and Remus don't get along very well."
"I wonder why," Dee muses.
"He and Remus are complete opposites," Virgil says. "I prefer Remus, to be honest." A fond smile touches Dee's lips.
"So do I," he says, a dreamy look entering heterochromatic eyes. Virgil snorts, elbowing him.
"Of course you do," he says.
"Dee! Virge!" Patton's exuberant voice spills out of the library doors before the rest of him. He beams at the two of them, hands clasped in front of him. He reminds Dee of a Christmas postcard, dressed in a pastel blue sweater, his familiar cat hoodie tied loosely over his shoulders. It has always amused Dee that a werewolf would be so enamoured with cats (although Patton's deathly allergic and Dee's had to tug him away more than once).
"Back here," Patton says, leading them into the warm confines of the library. Logan nods to them from the reference desk, adjusting his glasses as he bends over his computer. The library is closing soon, but that's all right. Logan and Patton have arranged everything. It's easier for them to do it. Virgil gets so anxious about the thought of arranging his own blood donor that he would rather die of thirst, and Dee's too self-conscious about his birthmark. He still does, of course, but he has to admit that it's easier when Patton volunteers. He likes to arrange for a special tray of Patton's favorite cookies to be sent over afterwards. Patton loves his cookies, especially chocolate chip ones.
"Are they here, Patton?" An unfamiliar voice asks from the dimness of the conference room.
"Yep!" Patton answers cheerily. It's easier when it's dark, Dee thinks as he sidles past the pun-loving werewolf. At least for the initial bite. He doesn't mind seeing afterward, but looking into someone's eyes right before you sink your fangs into them is a little, well-
Uncomfortable, to say the least.
"Don't take too much," Virgil cautions, but Dee already knows the generally unspoken rules. Their new blood donor sits at one of the tables, and Dee can barely see the pale expanse of his neck, bared to him.
"Er, maybe your arm would be better?" Dee suggests, hesitant. "Just so, you know, you don't have two holes in your neck..."
"Oh!" He sounds startled, but soon enough, a wrist is thrust in front of Dee's mouth. "That makes much more sense. I just assumed-"
"A lot of people do," Dee says, trying to hide his amusement. "This will only take a moment."
He sinks his fangs into the delicate skin of the stranger's wrist, just beginning to feed, when suddenly the overhead light flares on, and he looks into the shocked eyes of someone who could only be Remus's twin.
"Remus, I told you, they're busy in the-" He hears Logan's voice stutter to a stop as Dee jerks back from who could only be Roman, eyes wide.
"When I followed you, I thought I had to worry about Virgil, not my own brother," Remus says. He sounds utterly heartbroken, and Dee feels his heart crack that much more, hearing the utter desolation in Remus's voice.
"Remus, it isn't what you think," Virgil tries, but Dee could have told him it's the exact wrong thing to say.
"Really?" Remus snaps. Now he sounds very brittle. "My own boyfriend won't even face me. He's too busy facing my stupid twin." Dee's not facing him because he's too afraid blood is smeared all over his mouth, but how can he say that? As if his boyfriend will believe that he's a vampire now.
"That's what I thought," Remus says heavily. Dee stands there, listening to the plod of his boyfriend's boots, leaving the conference room, and his heart shatters.
"This has gone on long enough," Logan says after several long, tense moments. Dee's eyes burn with the force of his suppressed tears. "Dee, he deserves to know the truth."
"My brother's boyfriend is a vampire," Roman says, staring in wonder at the puncture marks on his wrist. "That's a new one."
"I'm sorry," Dee whispers. It's all his throat will let past.
"No need," Roman says. "Hey-" He thrusts his other wrist at Virgil. "You were gonna feed, too, weren't you?" Virgil jumps, his eyes darting around the room.
"Maybe later," he says. "I uh- this should probably get resolved."
"Agreed," Logan says crisply. "There is no reason to hide the truth of your vampire status from him any longer, Dee."
"But what if he-" Dee starts.
"I think he'll accept it," Roman promises. "I can't say why, but trust me. He will."
Dee heaves a ragged sigh.
"I hope you're right," he says.
-----
A brisk knock on the door interrupts Remus's crying jag. He looks up from the pint of Ben & Jerry's he's dived into, eyes red rimmed and nose running.
"I'm not in the mood to hear it!" He yells at the door. "Why don't you go back to my brother?" Of all the scenes he thought he would walk into at the library, seeing Dee bent so lovingly over his own twin never even came close to the realm of possibility. It still hurts, burning deep inside like a tablespoon of sea salt packed into an open wound.
"Your brother is with us," Logan calls back, his voice measured. "Dee has the key, Remus. We are coming in, whether you like it or not."
"Fine," Remus growls, dropping the spoon into his ice cream and stalking over to the door, jerking it open. Sure enough, everyone is crowded in the hallway. Dee's eyes look just as swollen as his own must be, and Remus feels a vicious splinter of satisfaction at the sight.
"Please let us in," Patton requests, twisting the knotted together sleeves of his cat hoodie. Remus steps back, watching them shuffle past him. Dee won't even meet his eyes.
"What do you want?" He asks sharply.
"You misinterpreted what happened at the library," Logan says.
"I'm not cheating on you," Dee whispers. "I wouldn't- I couldn't, Remus, it would physically destroy me, I love you so much-"
"Then explain your little lovey dovey scene with my brother," Remus hisses. Dee winces.
"It's complicated," he mumbles. "I, um-"
"This will take forever," Logan says, with an exasperated huff of breath. "Dee's a vampire, Remus. So is Virgil. Roman was going to be their blood donor."
"And I'm a werewolf!" Patton pipes up, an uncertain smile spreading across his face.
"What?" Remus asks blankly.
"I'm a vampire," Dee says, glaring at Logan. "Logan's not wrong. Virgil and me- we are best friends, but a lot of the time, when we don't invite you, it's because we need blood, and I, um... I didn't know how you'd react."
"You thought I wouldn't accept you?" Remus asks. Hesitant, Dee shrugs.
"I don't know?" He says. "And that's- well, that's part of the problem, I didn't think you'd take it bad or want to break up or think I was crazy, but I didn't know-"
"Bluebirds on bagels, this is too funny," Remus says, leaning against the wall and wheezing a little. "Roman, you didn't tell them?"
"It's your secret, bro," Roman says. Dee looks at him in confusion.
"It's been a big family secret," Remus says. "And I've been so afraid to tell you, but I'm a werewolf."
"Like me!" Patton squeals, and suddenly, Remus has an armful of Patton, squeezing him round the middle.
"Like you," Remus agrees. He looks up, serious. "I'm sorry, Dee. I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions like that. It wasn't fair- to anyone."
"I should have told you sooner," Dee says, his gaze downcast. "I'm sorry." Remus crosses the room, tugging Dee to him.
"I love you," Remus says, kissing Dee's temples. "So much."
"And I you," Dee murmurs. Remus barely registers the others filing out, shutting the door with a quiet click.
"I guess I'll have to find you a real Christmas present tomorrow," Dee mumbles, as Remus leads him to the sofa, curling up on it and pulling him to Remus's side.
"I told you," Remus says, peering into Dee's mismatched eyes. "The only Christmas present I need is you."

Real to Me (A Sanders Sides Princess and the Frog AU)  Prologue
First | Next
Summary: Virgil Bast grew up in a poor neighborhood in New Orleans, learning from his family’s work ethic and never once slowing down from the day he could get a job of his own. He’s always been kept company by his best friend, Patton La Bouff, son of the richest man in New Orleans.
Prince Roman of Maldonia has always been surrounded by praise, money, and almost anything he could ever want. Prince Remus, on the other hand, has never really been what you might call the pride of Maldonia.
And the Shadow Man has only ever wanted to punish those who’ve done wrong, helped along by his Friend on the Other Side.
Relationships: Platonic moxiety, eventual prinxiety
Characters: Virgil, Patton (eventual Roman, Remus, Janus, Logan, C!Thomas)
Warnings: None for this chapter! (There will be eventual unsympathetic Janus and Remus, but they get redeemed. There will also eventually be racial prejudice, but no slurs or physical violence.)
Word count: 1644
A/N: Hi, I’d like to preface this fic by saying that I’m not black. Although I am non-white, I also don’t have the same experiences as black people do and therefore cannot do their stories justice the way that they can.
I really debated on how best to write this au, because I want to give the best representation that I possibly can, and I even considered just scrapping it. However, I was really excited about it, and in the end I wanted to provide what representation I can, because as a racial minority myself, I know that some representation (so long as it’s accurate) is better than none at all.
There are no internal monologues about being black in this story, because I don’t know how that would go. I also realize that not all black people share the same exact thoughts/opinions and since I can’t use my own personal experience with racism for this, I figured it best to leave out the internal aspects of it altogether, so that I don’t misrepresent the black community. There is, however, some racism aimed at some of the characters by others. This is something I felt like I could accurately write about, having witnessed and experienced racism myself. The racism is there, presented, and condemned, but I don’t offer much more than that. Discrimination on the basis of race and/or color is something that too many people have faced, and I felt that it was too important to leave out of the story altogether (especially considering it’s part of why Tiana struggled to get her restaurant in the movie itself).
If you made it this far, thanks for reading!! This is something I’ve worked hard on, and I really hope you enjoy it! This first chapter is going to be mostly characterization and setting up the rest of the story, but I hope you enjoy it anyway!
Without further ado, I give you Real to Me!
“Just at that moment, the ugly little frog looked up with his sad, round eyes and pleaded, ‘Oh, please, dear princess, only a kiss from you can break this terrible spell that was inflicted on me by a wicked witch!’”
Virgil felt Patton lean over to him to loudly whisper, “Here comes my favorite part!” Virgil mentally prepared himself for what he knew was coming next.
“And the beautiful princess was so moved by his desperate plea that she stooped down,” Patton was leaning in now, “picked up the slippery creature,” Virgil was leaning away, “and kissed that little frog!”
Pat gave a squeal of delight and grabbed the cat that was walking by, squeezing it so tightly its eyes seemed to pop out. All while Virgil was dramatically sticking his tongue out as far as he could.
That was one thing about his friend that Virgil would never understand. How could Patton possibly think that the story was anything but unrealistic and unsanitary? The princess could’ve contracted some disease! Or maybe the frog was lying and he wasn’t even a prince?! Who came up with those stories?? He needed to have a talk with them.
“...and they lived happily ever after!”
He heard Patton sigh with delight before looking at Virgil’s mama with pleading eyes. “Will you read it again Mrs. Bast?”
“Sorry, honey, we’d better be heading home,” she said with a kind smile. “Say goodbye Virgil.”
“There is no way I’d ever ever EVER kiss a frog. Yuck,” Virgil ranted as he gathered his things from around the room.
“Even if he turned into a prince after?” Patton asked.
Virgil nodded hard. “Especially if he turned into a prince. Princes are just rich boys who do nothing all day but ride on their horses and dance with pretty ladies. I’d have to do all his work for him!”
“Nuh-uh!! Princes are brave, and polite, and after you’re married, they only dance with you!” Pat defended.
“You don’t kn-!”
“Evening Eudora!” Patton’s daddy called as he turned into the room.
“Daddy! Daddy!” Pat jumped up and down excitedly. “Look at my new dress!!” He twirled around to show off the fluffy, sky blue gown Eudora had sewn for him.
“Why, I’d expect nothing less from the finest seamstress in New Orleans!”
“Well thanks, Mr. La Bouff,” Eudora Bast replied. “Sorry to leave so soon after seeing ya, but we’d best be heading out now.”
Virgil vaguely heard Mr. La Bouff give his well-wishes to his mama as Pat was walking over to say, “What if the prince wasn’t lazy and boring? Would you marry him then?”
“I’d only marry him if he wasn’t just some prince in a book,” Virgil stated matter-of-factly. “He has to be a real person that I can talk to.”
“Well duh, silly! You can’t marry a book!” the blond boy laughed.
“Virgil! It’s time to go home baby, your daddy should be home by now,” Eudora called to him.
He ran over to where his mama was standing in the wide, elegant doorway and shouted, “Bye Patton!”
“Bye Virge!!”
~
Virgil always liked the ride home. He could watch the other people on the tram, and wonder what they’re like, and stare out the window at the fuzzy streetlights in the distance. Plus he got to lean his head on his mama’s shoulder and feel the tram rock side to side. It made him feel safe.
When they got near their neighborhood, Eudora whispered, “Go ahead and pull the cord.”
Virgil waved goodbye to the driver as he hopped off the tram and onto the sidewalk. He looked up at his mama as they walked down the street. “Why does Pat wanna marry a prince so bad? He’s already a prince, pretty much.”
“I don’t know sweetheart.” The lights made his mama’s face look so warm. “Maybe he wants to make it official. You could ask him sometime.”
“No,” Virgil said thoughtfully, “I think I’ll just help him find his prince. Oh! That can be his birthday present this year!!”
Eudora laughed lightly and smiled down at him. “I think that’s a great idea, hon.”
Voices rang out from houses along the streets, and Virgil could see families laughing together through some of the glowing windows. The two of them stepped up to the old, brown house and the door that creaks when you open it. As soon as he stepped inside, Virgil smelled the most amazing gumbo in the world, the kind only his daddy could make. He could almost taste it in the air. That, in combination with the yellow light coming from the kitchen and his daddy’s heavy, brown coat draped over the living room chair made Virgil feel like there was a fire in his chest, the kind that you have at Christmas.
“Daddy! We’re home!!”
Mr. Bast looked over his shoulder at the two coming inside, and smiled big. “Hey, Virge! I’m almost done chopping veggies, you wanna help me finish?”
“Yeah!! Can I taste it?” the boy asked as he dragged a chair over to the old stove.
“I’d be hurt if you didn’t,” James joked, helping him up. “How ‘bout you put these peppers in?”
After they’d let the ingredients stew in the pot for a while, Virgil put the wooden spoon to his mouth and his daddy asked, “How’s it taste?”
“Hmm…” Virgil tapped his chin a bit before quickly sliding to the floor, running over to the cupboard, and grabbing a bottle of tabasco. He dashed back over to the pot and shook in some of the sauce. “There! Try it!” The curly-haired boy handed the spoon over to his dad. He laughed as his daddy made a big show of tasting it.
“Mmm, now that has to be the best gumbo I ever tasted!” James grabbed Virgil under the arms and swung him to the ground. “Why don’t you go with your mama to call the neighborhood over? I’ll grab the pot.”
Virgil slid out of his daddy’s arms and nodded before running to the door. He flung it open and shouted as loud as he could, “Hey, everybody! I made gumbo!!” His mama reached where he was standing on the porch and stood behind him proudly, while the neighbors greeted him with “Woo! That smells good!” and he replied with “I made it almost all by myself! My daddy helped a little though.” Mr. Bast spooned out some gumbo into everyone’s bowls, and one by one they picked up their spoons.
It was quiet for a little, the kind that happens when your family’s sat around the table and it’s been a long day, but now you get to eat something and it barely even matters what it is because you’re all eating it in the same place at the same time. Then, though, people start saying things like “Mm-mm-mmm!!” and “this is fantastic Virgil, you must’ve gotten your daddy’s talent.” He could barely stop smiling long enough to chew. (His mama didn’t say anything about chewing with his mouth closed.) (This time.)
~
That night, when Virgil snuggled under his covers, he was smiling. He felt his mama sitting down on the bed by his feet. James was standing right next to her.
“You know the thing about good food?” Virgil looked up at his daddy. “It brings folks together from all walks of life. It warms them right up and it puts little smiles on their faces.” He tapped Virgil’s cheeks when he said it. James pulled a piece of paper out of his shirt pocket and showed it to Virgil, a drawing of a beautiful golden room with fancy tables and soaring ceilings. There were lots of people in the picture, musicians and waiters and diners with nice clothes and big feathers. “When I open up my restaurant, I tell you, people are going to line up for miles around just to get a taste of my food.”
Virgil sat up at that. “Our food.”
“That’s right, baby. Our food,” his daddy laughed and handed him the picture. The boy held it gently in his hands, like it was the most precious thing in the world.
Suddenly, Virgil got up and said, “Oh, look!” He stared out the window.
“What is it, hon?” Eudora craned her head to see what he was looking at.
“Patton’s fairy tale book said if you wish on a star, it’s sure to come true!”
James smiled at him and said gently, “Well, you wish on that star. You dream with all your heart. But remember, Virge, that star can only take you part of the way.” Virgil looked away from the star and back at his daddy. “You’ve got to help it along with some hard work of your own, and then, yeah, you can do anything you set your mind to. Just promise me one thing.” Virgil held his eyes. “That you’ll never, ever lose sight of what’s really important. Okay?” He nodded hard, twice, just to be sure his daddy knew he was serious.
His mama reached over to rub the tight black curls on his head. “See you in the morning, baby.”
“Get some sleep,” James told him.
“G’night,” Virgil whispered as he snuggled deeper into bed.
When the door closed, he hopped up again and went to the window. He could still find the star he had been looking at earlier — it was the brightest, and almost in the very middle of the sky. Almost like it was standing on a stage, waiting to be seen. Virgil closed his eyes and held the drawing to his chest. “I wish, I wish, I wish…”
Rrrrrribbit.
Virgil slowly turned to see the frog on the windowsill.
If he screamed, it was nobody’s business. (His mama and daddy were lucky enough to enjoy his company that night.)
~
A/N: Ok so I realize that it’s a lot of just quoting the movie, but I liked the way they set it up so I figured why fix it if it’s not broken right? But from here on, the characters deviate more from those of the movie, so the dialogue will be a whole lot more of my own :) it’ll be a lot more interesting next chapter, I promise. (And Virgil will be grown next time.)

Dreaming of Snow: A Sanders Sides White Christmas Au  Chapter 4
Word count:
Warnings: fire mention
Pairing: Romantic Prinxiety, Romantic Logicality, platonic royality, platonic Analogical
Thank you to @youre-lazy-and-youre-gay0-0 and @civilsounds17 for reading this chapter for me. 💜
Happy holidays everyone!
As the brothers performed their number, Virgil reflected on all of his memories of the General. “We ate, then he ate. We slept, then he slept. Then nobody slept for 48 hours,” he whispered to Logan.
Logan nodded. “It really is a shame. This man was a general. He helped to protect our country and look at where he is now. An indebted landlord with an empty inn.”
The brothers ended the show and changed before joining Virgil and Logan for dinner. “You know I think I can give you a few pointers on your brother number. The wardrobe, I don't like it,” Virgil snickered as Roman gasped, his hand flying to his chest in mock offense, a wide smile on his face.
“But it's so purdy,” Roman teased.
Virgil shook his head. “I'd hate to see your other outfits.”
Roman chuckled before he sobered up. “I don't know but I really don't like this. It's like taking a homeless man's last cent.”
Patton nodded then turned to Joan who was giving them a basket of rolls. “Joan, do you think you could talk him into letting us work for half salary?”
Joan shook their head. “Nope. When it comes to certain things Thomas is so stubborn you can't get him to move a centimeter. He's advancing himself into bankruptcy.” Virgil's eyes blew wide. “What?”
Joan nodded, face grim. “He's sunk everything. His pension, life savings, absolutely everything into remodeling this place. Before he turned it into a Scooby Doo haunted house, it was a gristmill and barn.”
“Really?” Logan asked, surprised as he took in his surroundings once again. “It really is impressive, the difference.”
Joan nodded before they left.
Virgil frowned. “There has got to be something we can do.”
“We should go to New York tomorrow. We got connections there. Get him a spot somewhere,” Logan answered.
Virgil shook his head. “That takes too long. The problem is here and now. We gotta be here and think of ways to get people to come here.”
“Well, what do you suggest?” Logan asked.
Virgil froze, feeling put on the spot. He took a breath and shrugged. “I don't know.”
“Maybe someone famous,” Patton suggested.
Logan's eyebrows furrowed. “That's not a bad idea, Patton.” Patton beamed.
“Maybe somebody like Wallace and Davis,” Roman suggested.
Virgil shook his head. “No, Princey, you couldn't get them, they're too big.” Roman blinked at Virgil. “What?” Virgil asked, clueless. Suddenly it hit him. “Oh! Wait! We're Wallace and Davis!” He turned to Logan. “How about it?”
Logan nodded, deep in thought. “I think you got something.” He turned to Talyn, who was standing off to the side. “Hey, Talyn, could you take me to the phone. I gotta make a call to New York.”
Talyn nodded and Logan followed them to the front desk where the phone sat.
“I don't know what he's up to, but he's got that Rodgers & Hammerstein look again,” Virgil commented as he watched the logical man walk away.
“Is that bad?” Patton asked.
Virgil shook his head. “Not bad, but always expensive. Excuse me,” he got up and joined Logan who stood talking on the phone.
“Now, get this straight,” Logan spoke into the phone.
“Good luck with that,” Virgil commented.
Logan rolled his eyes.
“The whole show up here in three days. Sets, costumes and all the cast that you can round up.”
“Wait, what's this gonna cost?” Virgil asked, he was getting anxious about all this.
“Everyone gets an extra weeks pay and a bonus for you. We open Christmas Eve.”
“The tab! How much!?” Virgil exclaimed, his heart rate picking up speed. They had to make sure they were spending things wisely.
Logan seemed to finally hear him. “Uh, what is this going to cost? Wow!” Logan exclaimed once he heard the cost.
Virgil's eyes blew wide. “How much is 'wow’?”
“Well, okay, you do the best you can.”
“How much is 'wow’?”
“Whatever acts we can't get we fill with the Haynes Brothers,” Logan told Virgil. Virgil felt his anxiety spike.
“How much is ‘wow’?” Virgil all but shouted.
Logan grimaced. He hadn't meant to cause Virgil's anxiety to jump. “Right in between ‘ouch’ and 'boing’.”
“Wow!” Virgil shook his head. They were doing this for the general.
All if the sudden, Joan came out of another room. “I won't tell Thomas, but I just wanted you to know that bringing your show here is the nicest thing-”
“How'd you know?” Virgil asked, shocked.
“Like any decent, self-respecting housekeeper, I listened in on the other phone!”
Virgil chuckled. This human was hilarious. Logan shook his head. Things were about to get crazy.
----
Thomas pulled out, in front if the Inn on his jeep and gasped. There were people everywhere and big pieces of set and boxes of props were all over the place. He spotted Virgil and Logan standing in the center of all of it. He quickly put the jeep in park and made his way over to the dynamite act.
“What's all this?” He asked the two, wide eyed.
Virgil stiffened slightly, worried that they had upset the General. Logan, however, straightened his tie. “We saw that you had a nice empty ski lodge here and it's ideal for a rehearsal space for our show. It also provides us a chance to test new material on the audience. Use people as metaphorical guinea pigs,” Logan explained.
Thomas shook his head and chuckled. “Pigs, I can get for you. People? I'm not so sure.”
“With all due modesty, sir, Wallace and Davis never had any trouble getting an audience.”
Virgil almost snickered at the small hint of pride in Logan's voice.
“Well,” Thomas chuckled again as he shook his head. “Well go ahead. It appears I don't know as much about big time showbiz as I thought.”
Virgil and Logan chuckled. “Yup.”
----
Virgil and Logan stood on the stage in all black suits with red undershirts and gloves and top hats. They were doing the dress rehearsal of the Minstrel number.
“I'd rather see a minstrel show Than any other show I know Oh, those comical folks With their riddles and jokes,” Logan and Virgil sang as they danced across the stage. “Here is the riddle that I love the best.” “Why does a chicken go…” Logan started to sing before Virgil covered his mouth. “You know the rest,” Virgil sang. “Yes, sir!” The two joined together again. “I'd pawn my overcoat and vest To see a minstrel show.” The background behind them raised up until it showed rows of backwards chairs with dancers standing beside them. In the very front, Roman sat in an all black strapless dress with glittery red gloves and a bunch of red fabric puffing out of the back.
The boys moved back and sat on stools on either side of Roman and picked up tambourines and hit them against their palms along with the other dancers. Then, the three stood and moved towards the center of the stage, lined up behind each other.
“Mr. Bones, Mr. Bones How do you feel, Mr. Bones?” Roman sang as he crossed his arms and leaned to the right while Logan leaned to the left right behind him, with Virgil staying in the middle right behind him. The three clapped before Roman leaned to the left as Virgil and Logan leaned to the right. “Rattling,” Logan answered. Virgil quickly leaned to the left as Roman moved to the middle and leaned his elbow on Logan’s shoulder as Logan leaned to the right, his arm around Roman's waist. “Mr. Bones feels rattling.” Roman moved his hand to his chest. “Ha, ha, that's a good one.” Roman leaned to the left as he crossed his arms, placing his hands right about his elbows, and Virgil moved to the middle behind the two. “Tell a little story, Mr. Bones.” Logan nodded his head and went to speak. “A funny little story, Mr. Bones,” Virgil sang, cutting Logan off. Logan closed his mouth and looked at the two before he stepped to the side and stood in front of Roman as Roman moved to stand in front of Virgil. “How can you stop an angry dog From biting you on Monday?” Logan sang. Virgil leaned to the left and rested his red gloved hands on Logan's shoulder while Roman mirrored the action on Logan's right. “That joke is old The answer is to kill the dog on Sunday,” Roman sang as Logan shifted his eyes back and forth between the two before the two leaned back to standing behind him. Logan shook his head as he raised his hand before lowering it and clasping his hands together. “That's not the way to stop a dog From biting you on Monday.” Logan crossed his arms as Virgil and Roman repeated their earlier actions. “How would you bring the thing about?” Roman sang deeply. Logan uncrossed his arms and leaned forward taking off his hat and holding it sideways next to his head in a ‘top of the mornin to ya’ move. “Have the doggie's teeth pulled out!” “Oh, Mr. Bones, that's terrible,” Roman sang as he and Virgil moved to either side of Logan and looked down. Logan frowned and looked sad. “Yes, Mr. Bones, that's terrible,” Roman and Virgil sang as they leaned on Logan's shoulders. Then the three stepped and danced around in a sort of figure eight before lining up beside each other with Virgil in the middle. “Mr. Interloc'ter,” Virgil sang as Roman placed his hand on Virgil's left shoulder while Logan place his on Virgil's right. “What is wrong with you?” Roman sang. “Well, I know of a doctor,” Virgil sang putting emphasis on doc-tor. “Tell about him, too.” “Sad to say one day he fell,” Virgil twirled his hand around and pointed down while the three looked down, with Roman and Logan leaning forward slightly. “Right into a great big well.” “Oh, that's too bad.” “But not at all,” Virgil sang as he smiled brightly. “Why speak in such a tone?” Roman sang. “He should have attended to the sick And let the well alone.” Virgil jumped behind Roman while Roman jumped to the front and Logan to the back. “That's a joke,” Roman put his hand on his hip.
Virgil leaned to the left and Logan to the right as they shouted, “Ho! Ho!” “That was told.”
Virgil leaned to the right while Logan to the left and shouted, “Ha! Ha!” “In the minstrel days we miss,” Virgil moved to the left of Roman while Logan moved to the right and the three moved to the left in a line. The three joined together to sing. “When Georgie Primrose used to sing And dance to a song like this!” Up on top of the stairs, Patton rose up in a white a silver one piece with sparkling red gloves, a white train that started at the hips and white high heels. “Randy! Randy! Randy! Randy!” Patton spun in a circle before starting to step down the staircase. “There's a minister handy And it sure would be dandy,” the chorus sang as dancers in all green except for a red undershirt, laid across the stairs, making Patton have to step around their legs. “If we let him make a fee. So don't you linger.” One of the dancers held their hand out to Patton who took it and was spun partially into their arms as they leaned back. “Here's a ring for your finger.” Another dancer held his hand out to Patton, who accepted and moved to the left while looking forward with a bright smile on his face.
“Isn't it a humdinger?” Patton stepped forward again and stepped over the legs of a few female dancers who looked like dolls, with red hair and red clothing. “Come along and let the wedding chimes Bring happy times for Randy and me.” Patton twirled when he got to the bottom and leapt to the right. “Randy, what a gent,” Virgil and Logan sang as Patton hopped over to stand in between them.
“Oh, Mandy,” the chorus started singing again as Patton laced his arms through the right of Virgil's and the left of Logan's. “There's a minister handy.” The trio took broad steps to the left as the chorus sang in the background. “And it sure would be dandy.” Patton unlinked his arms from the two and danced forward before dancing back and relinkling his arms with the two men. “If we let him make a fee.” “He's got his rent to pay. So don't delay. It's not a day to linger,” Virgil and Logan sang as the trio slammed their foot down and tapped at the floor. “Here's a ring for your finger. Isn't it a humdinger?” The three bent their knees as they “bounced” slightly before Patton danced forward and spun in a circle. He danced back and spun around to lean partially against Logan. “We advise to live and love,” Virgil and Logan sang along with the chorus as they clapped and leaned closer to Patton. “And honor and obey. Before he gets away. Make it Randy and me.” The trio stepped sideways as they moved to the left of the stage in a group with Virgil in front of Patton and Logan behind him. They paused for a moment as Patton looked forward a winked.
Patton spun around as they trio sort of tap danced around. Then Logan and Virgil kind of danced after Patton who was stepping to the side as one hand was placed on his hip with the other above his head. “The wedding chimes,” Logan sang as he wrapped his arm around Patton's waist from the left while Virgil did the same from the right. “Bring happy times,” Virgil sang as the three jumped in the air. The two joined together to sing, “For Randy and me.”
Patton placed his hands on his hips slightly stomped his feet in an almost marching fashion as dancers came up to take the big train off his outfit and raising it up into the air. Patton stepped underneath the garment and danced to the left and came up beside a man with a lighter green suit and red undershirt and gloves. The two danced around each other as they spun around. Then Patton did a toe spin before he bent back slightly and let himself drop. The man caught him and pulled him up again and the two spun in a circle a few times. Then the two danced elaborately with Patton raising his leg straight up in the air a few times. Behind them, the chorus all danced in rows with tambourines as the music continued.
Then everyone joined together to dance the same moves as they moved in unison, all the while hitting their tambourines against the palms of their hands along to the music. Patton then spun and did a cartwheel before being lifted up by the dancers in green suits while doing splits.
Patton and the man with the light green suit danced over to the bottom of the stairs where they spun around some more before two dancers in dark green held Patton as he leaned back onto their arms and they took him up the stairs as his leg stick up in the air and his head was hanging upside down. “So don't you linger. Here's a ring for your finger,” the chorus began again before the dancers in green all formed two lines down the stairs as Patton was thrown on top of their arms. “Isn't it a humdinger? Come along and let the wedding chimes. Bring happy times. For Randy and me.” The chorus held onto the last note as Patton flipped backwards and forwards multiple times, with the help of the dancers, down the stairs.
The song ended with Patton sitting on the dancer in the light green, Emiles’ shoulders, and Roman on the bottom step with Virgil on the left and Logan on the right.
Thomas, Joan, and Talyn clapped after. The number ended. “This'll bring in business,” Joan commented as the cast filed off stage.
Roman quickly made his way to the piano and played a part of the song. “Patton? Was the tempo a little slow here?” He asked before playing the part and singing it.
Before Virgil knew what he was doing, he leaned forward and moved his arms around Roman to get to the keys. “Well you gotta drive it,” he told Roman and played the notes. The considerable difference was one was more upbeat and faster than the other. “Is that better?” Virgil asked as he turned to Roman just as the other turned his head to face him.
“Yes actually-” both froze as they realized their faces were only centimetres apart. Virgil felt his face heat up but he still didn't move. “Much better,” Roman breathed.
As the two shared a moment, Patton looked to Logan who seemed to be very proud of himself.
----
Patton looked out the window just in time to see Virgil leaving his and Logan's shared cabin before going to dining room. Patton looked across the way to see Logan peeking out the curtains before looking over at him. Logan winked and Patton mouthed, ‘I'll be right there,’ Before turning around and grabbing a pillow. He walked over to Roman's bed as he heard his brother sing the Randy song under his breath. He handed him the pillow as Roman laid down.
“Is something wrong?” Patton asked.
Roman shook his head. “Nah, just a little restless is all.”
“Maybe if you had something to eat or a glass of milk you'd sleep better,” Patton suggested as he sat back on his own bed.
Roman shook his head. “Uh no I'm not hungry.”
Patton had to think fast if he wanted to get Roman into the same room as Virgil, alone. “I think Joan said they left some sandwiches at the snack bar.”
“Patton, go to bed.” “I think milk will definitely help-”
Roman groaned and sat up. “That's it! I'll go! Only so you stop telling me to!”
Patton smiled as Roman stood and wrapped a gold robe around him, covering his crimson pjs before he opened the door and walked to the dining room.
Patton quickly raced to the window to confirm that Roman was going to the dining room. Logan smiled and held up a finger before quickly ducking back into his room.
----
Roman opened the door to the dining room and walked past the fireplace and found Virgil at the piano pressing a few keys. “Hi,” Roman spoke up.
Virgil jumped and turned to see Roman standing behind him. “Oh, Roman.” He placed a hand to his chest. Before he frowned. “What are you doing up?”
Roman inched closer. “Couldn't sleep,” he said with a shrug.
“Aren't you a little young for that?” Virgil asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Aren't you?” Roman shot back.
Virgil shook his head, a fond smile gracing his face. Roman couldn't help but love seeing Virgil's smile. The two stood for a moment in silence as they thought. Suddenly, Virgil spoke up. “I take it you're here for some sandwiches?” he asked. The anxious man made his way over to the bar.
Roman cleared his throat. “Actually, I was hoping, since you're here, if you had any tricks to fall asleep. I mean,” Roman shuffled his feet as he looked down. “I know you were in the army and I know Toby mentioned he had nightmares and trouble sleeping while overseas. And I thought that maybe-”
“That maybe I did too?” Virgil asked softly.
Roman finally looked up at Virgil. There was a soft smile on the man's face. Roman almost got lost in his eyes. He nodded his head. “Yeah…” Virgil lead Roman over to the small fireplace. The two sat opposite each other.
“When I'm worried and I can't sleep. I count my blessings Instead of sheep. And I fall asleep Counting my blessings,” Virgil started to sing. Roman felt himself become lost the lulling sound of Virgil's voice as he sang to him. “When my bankroll is getting small, I think of when I had none at all. And I fall asleep Counting my blessings.” Roman felt a blush rising in his cheeks. It was hard not to blush when an extremely handsome man was singing to you. “I think about a nursery. And I picture curly heads. And one by one I count them As they slumber in their beds. If you're worried And you can't sleep Just count your blessings Instead of sheep. And you'll fall asleep Counting your blessings.” Virgil finished smiling softly.
“Do you mind if I say something?” Roman asked as the two stood. “I think what you're doing for the General is the nicest thing ever. And I want to apologize for being so judgmental towards you at first.” Roman sighed. “I guess I've just been a little silly thinking about knights’ in white horses.”
“You know,” Virgil started. “It's kind of dangerous putting those knights up on white horses, they might fall.”
Roman smiled at Virgil. “I think mine’s here to stay,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Virgil's head snapped up to meet Roman's gaze. “I-it makes a guy a little nervous being up there on those animals all alone.”
Roman chuckled. “Are you worried?”
“Kind of,” Virgil admitted.
Roman smiled. “If you're worried And you can't sleep Just count your blessings Instead of sheep. And you'll fall asleep Counting your blessings,” As the last word left Roman's lips, he leaned forward, closing the distance between him and Virgil.
Virgil felt fireworks. He would never admit it of course. He wasn't a sap, he didn't believe in love at first sight. He didn't believe in feeling fireworks when one kissed. But in that moment, that one small moment, he did. He felt an explosion of warmth in his chest as they kissed.
They pulled apart when they heard Thomas walk in. Thomas was smiling as he looked at the two. “I'm sorry, I was just after a little snack.” His smirk grew cheeky. “I see you've already beaten me to it.”
Virgil flushed while Roman chuckled. “Oh I sure did,” Roman said as he winked.  Thomas chuckled as Virgil's blush darkened. “I'll be leaving then.” Roman watched as Thomas left before turning to the blushing mess in front of him. Roman giggled. Virgil really was adorable with a blush on his face.
----
Virgil pulled in next to the general who sat on a bench. “Hey, Thomas.”
“Virgil! Any mail for me?” Virgil looked through the stack he held in his hands. “From Washington?”
Virgil stopped looking for a second. “Washington?” He asked. Thomas nodded. Virgil frowned and looked down and quickly found a letter addressed to the General. “Right here.” He handed the letter over to Thomas who smiled as he looked down.
“I'm gonna tell you something I haven't even told Joan. I'm going back in the army,” Thomas told Virgil eagerly as he opened the envelope.
Virgil's eyes blew wide. “Really?”
Thomas nodded. “Yup. I was just waiting for this letter!”
Virgil watched as Thomas eagerly read the letter. He was surprised of course to learn that the General had replied for active duty but he knew the man never really could sit still. Virgil felt himself frown as the general's face fell. “What is it?”
Thomas folded up the letter absently. “They're saying they don't need me,” he whispered.
“Thomas….” Virgil frowned. He didn't know what to say.
Thomas shook his head. “No it's okay.” The man stood and walked over to the jeep, “I should go make sure we have enough firewood. It's getting chilly.”
Virgil watched as Thomas walked to the jeep and started it before heading into the woods where he would gather some more firewood. All Virgil could think was, Something needs to be done.

Soooooooooo I did a thing
I’ve been wanting to post some of my writing on here for awhile, but it’s been kind of difficult because majority of my writing has been and always will be on my Wattpad account.
So, here I am, with a Christmas Sanders Sides one shot! Yes, I’m aware that Thanksgiving was two days ago. I just had the idea, so I ran with it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Word count: 2001
Ships: Romantic Royality, platonic/family Moxiety, and platonic/family Prinxiety
This is an angsty one shot, with some fluff here and there, and a fluffy ending.
Human AU.
Warnings: Profanity, crying, unsympathetic Virgil (he’s better at the end, I promise), Virgil is Patton’s son. If I missed anything, I am so sorry, please let me know.
Finally, I’m posting this partially to celebrate the fact that I am now accepting one shot requests! Send me a request, and I’ll see what I can do!
Merry Christmas
"Merry Christmas, fairest of them all!" Roman greeted as soon as Patton opened the door, leaning in and kissing his boyfriend’s lips.
“Merry Christmas!” Patton giggled in return, gesturing for him to come inside. One of the things Roman particularly enjoyed about Florida was that it never got terrifyingly cold outside, like it did in some other places.
He sniffed the air, noticing how it smelled deliciously like tomato sauce. “What’s cooking? It smells awfully good in…” Roman’s voice trailed off when he noticed a purple and black blur hurrying out of sight. Seconds later, he could hear a door closing at the end of the hallway.
“Hey.” Patton wrapped an arm around his shoulders, “Why don’t you help me in the kitchen? The lasagna’s already in the oven, but I need someone to wash and peel the carrots for the salad.”
“R-right.” Roman shook his head, focusing on the man holding him close. “Let’s go.” Despite how hard he tried to keep himself busy in the kitchen with the numerous tasks Patton gave him, his thoughts always roamed back to the teenager shut away in his room down the hall.
It was Patton’s son, Virgil Sanders. He was only fourteen years old, and already about the biggest pain in his ass that Roman had ever met. He had been dating Patton for roughly four years now, and Virgil insisted on fighting him every step of the way.
When they were first introduced, he welcomed Roman with a cold glare. Patton reassured him that “he’s always like this with new people,” and “he’ll come around, don’t worry,” but Roman wasn’t so sure. He was right, in fact, because Virgil only seemed to dislike him more from there.
The worst part? Roman never really understood why the kid hated him so much. He tried his hardest to get along with the emo, maybe just be friends, but the teen wouldn’t have any of it.
Now, standing in the kitchen and watching Patton half-mindedly, he couldn't help but fidget with the small box in his pocket. Gazing affectionately at the man before him, Roman repeated the name for what must’ve been the thousandth time. Patton Sanders-Princeton.
He loved the way the name sounded, almost as much as he loved thinking of Patton as his fiancé, or husband. The only person standing in his way was Virgil. Well, maybe he wasn’t in the way, exactly. Roman wanted more than almost anything to love him as his own, but he was finding it increasingly difficult as Virgil shied further and further away from him.
Roman also refused to propose to his boyfriend without his son’s consent. He knew what it was like to not have any control over what happens in your life. He’d experienced that when his father married a homophobic bitch named Karen.
“Ro? Babe?” Patton asked suddenly, and Roman’s train of thought quickly dove straight into the abyss. Okay, not straight. It dove gay into the abyss. His eyes fell onto his boyfriend, who was now standing directly in front of him. “Is everything alright?”
“Yeah, of course!” Roman replied, but his gaze shifted to the door at the end of the hallway. “I’ll… I’ll be right back.” Patton was concerned about his behavior, but tried to think nothing of it as he left the room.
Roman knocked gently on the white door, biting his lip. When he heard no response, he cracked it open slightly. “Virge…?” he asked when he noticed the purple and black heap facing the wall.
“Virgil.” was the muffled response he got, “Only people I like are allowed to call me Virge.” Roman’s heart sank slightly at that, but he kept up his confident front anyway. He couldn’t afford to let it drop, not now.
He leaned against the door frame with a small sigh, once again fidgeting with the little box. “I, um… I love your dad very much.” Virgil scoffed, but otherwise remained silent.
“I- I want to propose to him, Virgil.” Oh did Roman regret saying those words as soon as they slipped past his lips. If he could’ve taken them back, he would’ve.
“I’m sorry, what?” Virgil hissed defensively, sitting upright and facing Roman with a murderous look in his eyes, and a scowl on his face. “I want to marry him.” Roman murmured softly, nervously.
Virgil laughed dryly at that. “No! Fucking hell, Roman! I didn’t ask for the two of you to meet! I didn’t ask for you to get together! I didn’t ask for you to come over here every other day! I didn’t ask for you to be near me, and I didn’t ask you to try to get to know me! I didn’t ask for you to ‘love’ dad, and I most certainly didn’t ask for you to be my new father, because you never will be!” the angsty teenager got off his bed, shoving Roman out of the room before slamming the door in his face.
Roman’s heart in that moment was like a small pebble being tossed into the ocean. It was sinking down, and showed no signs of stopping. As soon as he was away from the door, thunder cracked, lightning flashed, and tears poured down his cheeks.
“Roman!” Patton cried, immediately rushing to his side. Virgil sat in front of his closed door, quietly listening to the conversation beyond.
“What happened?!” Pat asked, and at first, Roman wanted to answer, but his mouth was the texture of sandpaper, rough and dry.
“H-h-he said-” Roman shuttered in his boyfriend’s arms, now wishing that life had an undo button.
“Shhhhhhh,” Patton rocked him back and forth, “What’d he say?” “H-he said th-that I’ll n-n-never be h-his f-f-f-father!” Roman whimpered, burying his face in Patton’s neck. It shouldn’t hurt this much. Virgil isn’t even his kid, he’s Patton’s. He wasn’t supposed to grow this attached, and yet he did.
Hearing Roman say those words made Virgil falter slightly. He had said so much to Roman in the brief time that he had been in the room, and yet… he was most upset that Virgil had told him that he would never be Virgil’s father. Not that Virgil didn’t want him to marry his dad.
“Oh, Roman…” Patton whispered, kissing his forehead. “I don’t know why he’d… I’m so sorry!” he led Roman to the couch, sitting down with him in his lap. “I knew that you guys don’t get along, but I didn’t realize he would say something like that…” what Patton said only caused Roman to cry harder.
“I don’t understand what I did!” Roman sobbed, “I-I just want to know, so I can apologize, and Virgil will like me!” Ever since Virgil decided that he didn't like Roman, he’d forced his heart to remain stone cold. Just… an emotionless rock that kept blood pumping through his veins. And yet, the tiniest crack was starting to wedge it’s way into the outer shell.
Patton sat there with Roman in his arms, and for the first time in his life, he didn’t know what to do. For the first time ever, he wasn’t sure how to help the one who needed it most.
After what felt like forever, Roman’s broken sobs slowly began to fade into quiet sniffles. Patton hugged him tightly, and they were both too focused on each other to hear the door creak open. “We’ll figure this out, okay? I promise.” Patton continued whispering sweet nothings in his ear, hoping it would help. He only stopped when he felt another hand on his.
Virgil carefully and cautiously climbed on the couch with them,  wrapping his arms around Roman. If Patton hadn’t been watching him, he would’ve never noticed how glassy Virgil’s eyes were.
“I’m sorry.” was all he said, but it was enough to set Roman off and suddenly, he was crying all over again, hugging Virgil tightly. Roman felt as if the moment he let the kid go, he would immediately go back to hating him.
“You can ask him.” Virgil whispered, and Roman hugged him tighter. Patton didn’t understand, but he didn’t need to. His son and his boyfriend were making up, and that’s all he cared about.
“How about opening presents before dinner?” Virgil suggested, and Roman offered him a watery smile. “Sounds perfect.” Patton hurried off after that, grabbing the two packages he had wrapped earlier. None of them had ever really been into the whole gift giving tradition on Christmas, so they settled on getting each other one present only.
“Here!” Patton chirped excitedly, tossing both Roman and Virgil similarly shaped squishy packages. They tore through the snowflake paper at the same time, each grinning at its contents.
“Patton, this is amazing!” Roman lifted up the beautifully knit white sweater. It had red sleeves, along with a bright red sash covered in snowflakes that traveled diagonally across. What looked to be golden braids stretched straight across in neat rows.
“This is pretty chill, dad.” Virgil breathed, gazing at his. Unlike Roman’s, it had a big purple thunder cloud at the top, with gorgeous purple and black patterns covering the rest of it.
Patton’s eyes were shining as he tugged on his own sweater. “Really? I’d say mine is rather toasty.” Roman smiled lovingly at the pun, laughing as Virgil cringed.
“Me next!” Virgil decided, handing one gift to both of them. He glanced down guiltily. “I know it’s not a lot, and I only have one, but I-” Patton cut him off. “Whatever it is, you know I’m gonna love it!” Roman nodded enthusiastically as he began ripping through the plain red paper.
Patton gasped at the picture frame in his lap, glancing at Virgil with wide eyes. “You drew this?” Roman was just as awestruck, if not more so. This entire time, Virgil always at least seemed like he hated him, and yet… he’d drawn a beautiful portrait of himself and Patton. It looked so alive that Roman could hardly believe it was a drawing in the first place.
“You’re turn, Ro!” Patton kissed his cheek, and Roman tried to force the uneasy feelings away. Nothing was going to go wrong. Virgil supported him now. It would be fine. Right?
“Uh- here.” Virgil accepted the present gratefully, quickly ripping it open. “What. The. Hell.” Virgil lifted a midnight black MCR sweatshirt out of the box, along with two tickets for their next concert.
“You… you…” Roman laughed at that. “When your father told me that you liked My Chemical Romance, I decided I wanted to do something special.”
“Thank you.” Virgil threw his arms around his neck. Roman forced a smile in return. There were so many butterflies in his stomach that he wasn’t sure whether to laugh, or cry.
“You got this.” he whispered in Roman’s ear, and he nodded. Roman took a deep breath before reaching out for his hopefully soon fiancé’s hands. “Patton,” he began, gazing into those chocolatey brown eyes that had enchanted him right from the moment they met. “We’ve been dating for four years now, and honestly? I’ve spent some of the happiest moments of my life with you. I’ve loved you way more than I thought any human was capable of loving, and I don’t want to ever stop. You and Virgil light up my world, and together you’ve made me the happiest man alive.
“Most importantly, you’re the best boyfriend I could’ve asked for in a million years. So Patton,” Roman got off of the couch and leaned down on one knee, “Will you marry me?”
“Yes, yes, yes, one million times, YES!” Patton cried, jumping into Roman’s arms. “I love you so much,” he murmured as Virgil joined the hug. “I love you too, Snowflake.” Roman carefully slid the diamond ring onto his finger, kissing him passionately.
“Merry Christmas.” Roman said to no one in particular as he leaned down to kiss his now fiancé’s lips again. To his surprise, Virgil was the one who replied. “Merry Christmas, Dad.”

On the twelfth day of Christmas
Virgil, Deceit, Remus & Mentioned Logan, High School AU. Warnings for: Character with ADHD not getting adequate support in school, insensitivity to cultural winter festivals, tiny bit of swearing.
Twelve Drummers Drumming
High school sucked. Anyone who disagreed was probably lying, or rich and pretty or something. Because high school sucked and that was just common knowledge, right?
It certainly felt that way to one Dante Inganno, every time he had to trudge up the path to the grey concrete buildings of Hamilton High School, New York. He would have groaned aloud if not for the need to maintain his facade of cool, superior indifference to the whole situation and sort of just to life in general- it was kinda his thing these days. That and his punk rock outfit and his ever-present black poncho-cape-hoodie combination that he'd found in a thrift store. His cousin Emile called it a safety blanket and said it was an unhealthy coping mechanism and not a valid personality trait by itself, but once (one glorious time) Virgil Sanders had call it 'neat', so he was just never ever wearing anything else ever again, basically. And it was an outer layer, Emilio; it didn't need to be washed very often.
Virgil Sanders was dreamy A. F.
Look, it wasn't even a biased opinion, okay? Virgil Sanders was dreamy- he had long purple hair and deep brown eyes with the longest eyelashes ever. His skin was annoyingly clear and his face was attractively symmetrical apart from one tooth that snaggled very slightly that was only visible on the rare occasions he grinned. He wore makeup most days, and it highlighted his eyes really nicely, and even though he was a bit of an eboy and Dante didn't really hold a high opinion of fads like that, he was unfairly pleasant whenever they talked. So... Dreamy. Case closed.
It was right at the end of term at long last, so at least today Dante felt a tiny bit less ugh about arriving at school. And when Virgil flipped him a subtle peace sign and a soft smirk as they passed each other in the hall, the ughness receded another bit. It returned full force after lunch break though, when he was abruptly reminded that as part of their winter festive celebrations (it would have been a nice gesture not to name it after Christmas if the staff hadn't promptly forgotten any other winter holidays existed and failed to mention them ever- a stance that student president Logan Doyle was hotly and loudly opposing), they would have to endure a stupid whole school assembly, complete with pep rally even though there was nothing to be pepped for. Dante actually did groan when the chirpy voice on the tannoy reminded them all, complete with no less than seven puns and a bubbly laugh. Ugh, ugh and triple ugh.
Still, at least he got to gaze at Virgil for three hours while they sat and shivered on the football field bleachers, he realised when he saw the other boy sit two rows ahead and a few people across, within convenient gazing distance. He wasn't prepared for Virgil to turn around to grab something from his backpack and notice the eyes, offering him a flutter of fingers in an approximation of a subtle wave, and the turning up of the corner of his mouth. It made Dante's stomach bubble weirdly, and he resolutely nodded back and turned forwards, determined to ignore his flaming cheeks and at least try and focus on the spectacle in front of them. He couldn't help but cast a few more glances over though, but when the band came out to play and do their funky manoeuvres Virgil seemed utterly rapt, sitting forwards and craning his neck to follow someone in particular. Dante, try as he might, couldn't figure out who Virgil was suddenly cheering for and pulling his phone out to capture on video, but by the good name of Keanu Reeves he wished it could be him.
It was only when they'd taken their bows and were preparing to move off the field for the arrival of the principal that it became clear- one of the clump of drummers waved and whistled and Virgil blew a kiss down. With a squint, Dante recognised the figure to be Remus, a bit of a troublemaker. Well, a lot of a troublemaker, constantly in detention and rumoured to have been kicked out of special ed despite his ADHD because the teachers 'couldn't handle him'. Fuckers. Remus was... okay, not the worst person to have as a rival for Virgil's affections, really. And it wasn't exactly Virgil's affections that Dante wanted anyway, he just thought it would be pretty... well, to borrow Virgil's own word; neat, if they could be friends.  And maybe that was still possible, he told himself, reaffirmed when Virgil Sanders dropped down next to him on the bleachers as everyone hurried off to get to their lockers and go home (after they'd endured far too much waffling from the far too cliche old white man who supposedly ran their school); faced him head on with a soft smile; and said, "Hey, I'm Virgil."
Dante's mouth turned up in a smile of his own. So maybe not all of high school sucked. But mostly it did. Ugh.
